General Notes: Kenneth James Ditmore, born June 10, 1927, was the first child of Glenn James Ditmore and Etta Mae Casady. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy in August 1944 at the age of 17 years, three months. He went to Recruit Training and Signalman School at the U. S. Naval Training Center at Farragut, Idaho and was promoted to Seaman Second class upon graduation. He was stationed on Guam, guarding Japanese prisoners of war.
On September 16, 1951, Ken and his high school sweetheart, Elizabeth Pauline Allen, eloped to Tijuana, Mexico. Their sons, Michael James and Timothy Troy, soon completed the family.
Devoted to the Navy, Ken rose in the ranks to Chief Petty Officer. Military life offered the family many opportunities to see the world. They were stationed at bases around the globe, including two years in San Diego, and one year at Lafayette, California. They lived in Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii for three and a half years, and were there when Hawaii was admitted into the Union as the 50th state on August 21, 1959. They were then sent to Rota, Spain for 18 months. Having applied for a commission, Ken was selected and sent to the Officer Indoctrination School, Newport, Rhode Island. Upon graduation, he was commissioned an Ensign on July 1, 1961. From there they went to Norfolk, Virginia, for over three years while Kenneth served on the USNS Michelson. After sea duty, including cruises into the Pacific Ocean, the next stop was in Chicago, Illinois, Great Lakes Naval Training Station, for him to attend the Electronics Officer School, and then on the Stockton, California and the San Francisco Communications Station. Over the years, he earned the rank of Lieutenant Commander (Permanent). Having prior enlisted service, he was known as a "Mustang."
Kenneth served on a number of U. S. Navy ships during his career, among them, USNS Michelson TAGS-21(Oceanographic Survey Ship), USS YMS-322 (Minesweeper), USS LST 131 (Landing Ship - Tank), USS LSI -1091 (Landing Craft - Infantry), USS Tolovana AO-64 (Refueler), USS Nantahala AO-60 (Refueler, USS Hector AR-7 (Repair Ship), USS Flicker AMS-9 (Minesweeper), USS Washburn AKA-108 (Attack Cargo Ship), USS Philip DDE-498 (Destroyer), and the USS Hancock CVA-19 (Aircraft Carrier), where he received his promotion to Lt. Commander.
In his own words, "My travels in the Navy included two round trips across the Atlantic, and so many across the Pacific I can't detail all of them here. I was as far west as Ras-al-Tannura in the Persian Gulf, as far east as Bremerhaven, Germany, as far north as Pt. Barrow, Alaska and as far south as Adelaide, Australia."
On July 1, 1974, after a distinguished career, Kenneth James Ditmore retired from the Navy at the Naval Communications Station of San Francisco, Rough and Ready Island, Stockton, California . His list of Awards and Decorations include the Navy Commendation Medal with Star, Navy Achievement Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation with two stars, the good Conduct Medal with four stars, American Theater Medal (World War II), World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal with star, Korean Campaign Medal with three stars, Vietnam Service Medal with five stars, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with device, Vietnam Presidential Unit Citation and the United Nations Medal.
Upon retiring from the Navy, Kenneth attended San Joaquin Delta Junior College, Stockton, California, continuing his education at California State College Stanislaus, Turlock, California, obtaining his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration in May 1977. He obtained a position as an accountant with a small, local Certified Public Accounting firm, Leiba & Bowers, CPAs, in Stockton, California. That same year, Kenneth passed the nationwide Public Accounting test and was granted his certificate to practice as a Certified Public Accountant in California in 1979. After retiring, he maintained a small private practice with a few selected clients. He and Paula soon moved from Stockton to their retirement home in Grass Valley, California.
Paula died in 2005. Ken remained in their home in Grass Valley, California until 2015 when he moved to Santa Rosa, California to be near his son, Tim and his wife, Sharon. Soon after though, Tim passed away. Sharon, taking care of Ken, became the daughter that Ken and Paula didn't have. Ken passed away 7 months after his son, Tim.
Ken's and Paula's ashes were simultaneously scattered in the Pacific Ocean outside of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Kenneth married Elizabeth Pauline ALLEN, daughter of Raymond ALLEN and Lou MORRIS, on 16 September 1951 in Monterey, California. Elizabeth was born on 2 May 1927 in Pittsburg, Contra Costa County, California, died on 8 February 2005 in Nevada County, California at age 77, and was buried in Cremated. Another name for Elizabeth was PAULA.

Marriage Notes: The DITMORE Family Bible of Glenn and Etta DITMORE, in the possession of Linda Joyce DANIELL in 2003, indicates that this marriage took place in "Old Mexico" on September 16, 1951. Kenneth DITMORE said that the marriage actually took place in Monterey, California. He and Paula told his parents that the wedding was in Mexico to keep them from being upset by their marrying close to home without having the parents present for the wedding.

General Notes: Elizabeth Pauline "Paula" ALLEN was born on May 2, 1927 in Pittsburg, Contra Costa County, California. She attended Concord Elementary School and Mount Diablo High School in Concord, California, graduating in June 1946.
While in high school, Paula worked part-time as "soda jerk" at an Ice Cream Fountain Shop, and later in sales in a Dress Store. Her first full-time employment was as a bookkeeper for the American Trust Bank in Concord. She was hired by the Western Asbestos Corporation in San Francisco, California.
Paula married Kenneth James DITMORE on September 16, 1951 in Monterey?, California. Kenneth had been enlisted in the U. S. Navy since 1944, participating in World War II. Paula became a consummate military wife, raising their two children, Michael James, and Timothy Troy, and keeping the home fires burning when Kenneth was on deployments and overseas tours. She was active in Cub Scouts, the Parent Teachers Association, and taught Arts and Crafts in the base school while they were stationed in Rota, Spain.
On one of Ken's changes of duty stations from Virginia to California, Paula had to drive the herself and the boys from coast to coast. Ken's sister, Linda, was returning from a vacation in Europe at the time, and accompanied Paula on the trip. Paula said, "A dull trip it wasn't, not with two women, two boys, and a dog." It was a week of adventure.
On another occasion, while Ken was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, Paula's sister's husband, was also stationed there. Paula and May Lou rented a large house in Westwood, California. They moved into the house with five children and one dog between them to wait out the family separations.
Paula's higher education pursuits took her to California State College, San Francisco for one year and San Joaquin Delta Junior College, Stockton, California where she took advanced ceramics classes and other art related subjects. These courses eventually led her to making her own porcelain dolls.
During another of Kenneth's overseas deployments, Paula was able to join him in Hong Kong, seeing the Forbidden City, Tiger Balm Gardens, and the Border of the Peoples Republic of China, and adding to her doll collection. She also made a special comment about riding "the delightful little green ferry boats between Kowloon and Hong Kong."
When the boys were in high school, Paula returned to work, starting part-time as a clerk in Weinstock's Department Store in Stockton, California, and eventually rising to become manager of seven departments of the store, all at one time. Her responsibilities included the China, Silver, Lamps, Pictures and Gift Departments. Paula quit working at Weinstock's after eight years there to be with Ken when he retired from his position at Leiba & Bowers Accounting.
Paula's hobbies were her collections, including small glass figurines, miniatures, Hummels, plates, and especially her dolls which number about 600 and are from all parts of the world. Ken's travels to many areas of the world contributed to Paula's receiving many international dolls to add to her collection and remembrances. Paula busied herself making her own porcelain dolls as well, reproductions of famous dolls of the past, which are now part of collection. She is also an avid reader, with her tastes ranging from fiction and historical novels to comedies, science fiction, mysteries and classics.
Paula and Ken celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2001 in Sacramento, California with their sons and wives, grandchildren, brothers and sister and families present for the occasion.
Paula died at home in Grass Valley, California on February 8, 2005. Her obituary, published in the Contra Costa Times newspaper read:
"Paula DITMORE May 2, 1927 - February 8, 2005 Born Elizabeth Pauline Allen to mother Lou Morris (Lee) Allen and father Raymond M. Allen in Pittsburg, California. Paula spent most of her early years in Concord, California, graduating from Mt. Diablo High School in 1946. She knew her husband, Ken, in High School and were married for 53 years, the first 23 years as a Navy wife. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Lou Lingenfelter of Grass Valley, sons Michael of El Cerrito and Timothy of Santa Rosa, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. After a relatively short illness, complicated by chronic lung and heart problems, she was brought home to Alta Sierra with aid of Hospice. She spent a peaceful weekend with most of her family including her sister, sons and their families, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She lapsed into a coma before passing into her Maker's arms on February 8, 2005. She chose to have no services at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of the Foothills, 12399 Nevada City Hwy. Grass Valley, CA 95945."
At a later date, by their wishes, the ashes of Paula and her husband, Ken, will be "scattered outside of the Golden Gate Bridge".

110. Glenn Arland DITMORE (Glenn James74, Pleasant Henry50, Charles Willis, CSA (Sgt)11, Eliza1) was born on 22 February 1936 in Okemah, Okfuskee County, Oklahoma, died on 26 May 2002 in Sun Lakes, Arizona at age 66, and was cremated on 31 May 2002 in ashes spread on the rocky beach near Aptos, California.

General Notes: Glenn Arland DITMORE was born February 22, 1936 in Okemah, Oklahoma, the third son of Glenn James DITMORE and Etta Mae CASADY. According to his birth certificate, his family resided at 417 North 5th Street in Okemah. His father was employed as a retail gasoline salesman, his mother, a housewife. To prevent confusion with his father's name, Glenn Arland was called "Arland".
In September,1937, his family moved to Concord, California. He started first grade at Concord Elementary School in 1942. He loved baseball and played Little League Baseball on the Williams Bear Cubs team in 1944. In eighth grade, he was on the Junior High School All star Basketball Team in 1950. Continuing his love of athletics throughout his youth, he played football, and basketball in high school. He was also active in the Concord Presbyterian Church, committing his life to Christ at Mount Herman in the Santa Cruz mountains. As a senior, he sang in the Mount Diablo High School Boys Quartet.
After graduating from high school, Arland enlisted in the United States Army in San Francisco, California and was inducted on August 18, 1954. His Army Service Number was US56245955 while on active duty. His home of record was his parent's address at 2425 Maple Avenue in Concord, California. He was to serve two years active duty and six more in the Army Reserve. After Basic Training, Arland completed the Field Artillery Basic Training Course. He earned an Army Specialty code of 140.00 and was promoted to Private First Class (T) on April 23, 1955. According to his DD Form 214, his most significant duty assignment was as a Chaplin's Assistant. This duty portended his deep religious commitment which he demonstrated throughout his life time. After serving in Germany for 17 months with the Second Armored Division in the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, on June 14, 1956, Arland was discharged from Fort Ord after serving on active duty for one year, nine months, and 27 days and transferred to the Army Reserve, California Military District, as "Unassigned" to complete his eight year service commitment. For his overseas service, Arland was awarded the Army Occupation Medal (Germany). His early discharge was granted for him to attend school. He resided at 3180 Willow Pass in Concord, California at this time. Seven years, eleven months and twelve days after enlisting, he received his Honorable Discharge from the Army of the United States on July 31, 1962.
While in service, Arland became "Glenn" to all his friends and acquaintances. From then on, most people knew him as Glenn, but that name change did not take in the family who regularly called him Arland. Arland's father lived until 1990, and his family still distinguished between him and his father by using his childhood name.
After his discharge, Arland graduated from Whitworth College, Spokane, Washington, majoring in History with two minors, Political Science and Christian Education. He then worked as a youth secretary for the San Pedro and Peninsula YMCA from the Santa Ana "Y", and was responsible for the GRA-Y and Hi-Y club programs throughout the peninsula.
Arland earned his Masters Degree in School Administration from Chapman College, Orange, California on February 8, 1970.
The California Congress of Parents & Teachers awarded Glenn Arland its Honorary Service Award Certificate on January 31, 1971 for his work while a vice-principal at La Veta Elementary School.
Arland first married Beverly SHERMAN, his high school sweetheart who was still a junior in high school, shortly before entering active duty in the summer of 1954. His mother objected to the marriage to the point where she would not attend the wedding. In fact, she locked herself in the work shed for the day. Beverly went to Germany to meet Arland to tell him that she was pregnant by another man in his absence. Arland wanted to raise the child as his own, but after the child was born and despite Arland's objections, Beverly sought and was granted a divorce.
Arland's second wife was Jo Ann ERICHSEN, a school teacher. He met Jo while he was a youth director at a small Evangelical Free Church in Spokane, Washington when a gospel group she was with did the service. She was a pianist, and Arland sang. He asked her to play while he rehearsed his singing. After announcing their engagement on Christmas Day, 1957 at a party given by Jo's parents, they married in Glendale Presbyterian Church on August 23, 1958 in Glendale, California. Arland and Jo had one daughter, Katherine Louise DITMORE, who was born on May 9, 1959 in Spokane, Washington, and adopted two other children, Cory Thomas DITMORE, born June 24, 1969 and adopted July 30, 1973, and Kristina Suzanne DITMORE, born February 22, 1972. Arland and Jo divorced in 1976.
Arland was very proud of his three granddaughters, Shannon Leigh and Shaylin Anne SANDERS, and Amy Joann BODEN. Every year he sponsored his grandchildren, and step-grandchildren, Jeff & Kevin BODEN, to summer camp at Forest Home in Forest Falls, California where Kathy's step-sons, Jeff and Kevin made their commitments to Christ.
Arland's widow was Joan Lavison SMALLWOOD who he married in Brea, California on June 30, 1984 in the backyard of a friend. They lived in Diamond Bar, California before moving to Sun Lakes, Arizona in 1996 after Arland retired as an Elementary School Principal from the Orange Unified School District.
Arland suffered his first heart attack on February 22, 1981, his 45th birthday, undergoing single bypass surgery shortly thereafter. Until then, he was very active athletically, playing softball in several leagues, often in the same season, basketball, tennis, & golf. While never a smoker or drinker, his arteriosclerosis was primarily attributed to his love of junk food and he frequently subsisted on a diet of hamburgers, fries, Twinkies & ice cream.
When Arland died on May 26, 2002, he and Joan lived at 9334 East Nacoma Drive in Sun Lakes. He had been fighting Metastatic Carcinoma for more than a year. He was cremated on May 31, 2002 at Paradise Memorial Crematory, Scottsdale, Arizona. "A Service of Celebration for the life of GLENN ARLAND DITMORE was held on June 1, 2002 at 2:00 PM in the Lamb Chapel of the Grace Community Church in Tempe, Arizona. His brother, Robert spoke of Arland and his family memories. During a visit to the Monterey Peninsula on _(date)_, Joan and Robert DITMORE, an older brother, spread Arland's ashes on the rocky beach below the ninth green of the Pebble Beach Golf Course. Arland loved the game of golf, and had played the Pebble Beach course with other members of his family during a family reunion in 1994.
