General Notes: Minnie's biography below was printed in The Country Connection, February 1, 2000, page 4:
A lady for all centuries; a pioneer and still smiling
She is 104 years old, living in her third century, but you would never guess her age by talking to her, or by looking at her either.
Minnie Hume is a true Oklahoma Pioneer, Born in Ranger, North Carolina on a September day just before the turn of the Century--the 20th Century that is, Minnie moved to Hydro, Indian Territory, in 1906, when she was 11 years old.
The oldest child of the six children of Ples Henry and Ida Alice Akins Ditmore, Minnie soon suffered the loss of her mother, who died at a young age.
Ples's brother, U. F. Ditmore had also moved to the Hydro area, and U. F.'s sister-in-law, Rintha Stepp, was a widow with four children. Ples and Rintha had four children of their own, so Minnie then had 13 brothers and sisters.
When she was 15 years old, Minnie married Everett Ray Hume. Their first home was in Vanese, Oklahoma, but in the 1920's they moved to Weather- ford. Everett opened up his own business, the E. R. Hume Welding Shop on Rainey Street.
Everett and Minnie had six children, and life was busy and good. In 1947, they selected a home site on their farm west of Hydro, and began to build. But tragedy struck when Everett and the couple's 16 year old son were in an accident on Highway 66, not far from their home-to-be. Their son was killed, and Everett was so badly injured that he was confined to a wheelchair the rest of his life.
The Humes moved to a home on College Street in Weatherford, and it was then that Everett taught Minnie to drive. She drove her pink 1959 Oldsmobile until 1992. (She was then 96 years old.)
In 1968, Everett passed away. Now alone, Minnie took over the couple's rental property business and also rented part of her house, mostly to college students. Many of those students have never forgotten Minnie and have kept in touch for many years.
When Minnie decided she was no longer able to take care of her rental properties, she sold her home and rentals, and moved to a smaller home in Weatherford where she still lives.
Two caregivers, Mary Branson of Hydro and Mary Smalley of Weatherford, take turns staying with Minnie to make sure all goes well with her. Minnie loves these ladies very much, and brags on their cooking talents. She especially loves going for drives with Mary Branson, and they always make a stop for an ice cream cone -- strawberry!
Minnie has always had many friends and lots of family members who love her, and she is always happy when they visit. A special treat is when grandson Keith Hume of Amarillo, who is a hair stylist, comes to visit. He gives her permanents and "fixes her up pretty."
An active member of the First Baptist Church for many years she sang in the choir there. Now that she is unable to attend church on a regular basis, she makes sure to watch church services on television. Reading her Bible is a favorite pastime.
In the summer, Minnie enjoys her front yard and flowers. Family and friends get together for her birthday party in September each year.
Minnie could write a book. We hope she does, for inside this smiling 104 year old, who looks maybe 75, there is surely a whole library, filled with wisdom of three centuries." (Provided by Harriet Anderson)

Minnie died at the age of 107 years, 8 months, and 30 days. She is buried in Hydro Masonic Cemetery, Blaine County, Oklahoma. Find A Grave Memorial #28020613 created by: Robin & Beverly Kellison on Jul 03, 2008 lists her birth in 1895 and her death in 2003 and presents a picture of her and Everett Ray HUME's shared headstone.

"My grandpa, Dugan Louis Bowen, died in Oxnard, CA, in August 1962. I have the Bible that my Grandma Bessie read all the time. It was a Bible that she had given as a gift to Grandpa Dugan when he was alive. Most of the time when you went to her house, it was in her lap, and she was sitting reading it. Anyway, you can see where she entered Grandpa’s death in this Bible. The writing where her death is written, was added by my dad." [Bonnie Bowen]

74. Glenn James DITMORE 33 (Pleasant Henry50, Charles Willis, CSA (Sgt)11, Eliza1) was born on 16 April 1903 in Ranger, Cherokee County, North Carolina,32 died on 5 December 1990 in Panama City, Bay County, Florida32 at age 87, and was buried on 8 December 1990 in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Bay County, Florida.

General Notes: Glenn James DITMORE was born on April 16, 1903, and raised in Ranger, North Carolina. He completed eighth grade. Some time after 1909 and before 1920, his father moved the family to Oklahoma where the family worked a farm.

In 1920, Glenn J., 16, resides with his father and family in Caddo County, Oklahoma.

Glenn met and married Etta Mae CASADY. They had to marry twice, first "married" on January 18, 1926 in Hydro, Oklahoma by Rev. J. HESSER, witnessed by Mr. & Mrs. E. R. HUME. Just a day later, they discovered that the marriage was not recognized because they were married outside of the county which issued their marriage license. There are many jokes about this, including Glenn's being unsure he wanted to get married again. Etta was mortified about their having "lived in sin", but all ended happily when they were "remarried" in Arapaho, Oklahoma on January 28, 1926 with the same minister and witnesses in attendance.

Glenn and Etta had three sons, Kenneth James, Robert Keith, and Glenn Arland, born in Oklahoma, before they moved to Concord, California in 1938. In Concord, they bought a small home at 2425 Maple Avenue, and in 1941 had their last child, Linda Joyce.

To support his family, Glenn worked as a retail gasoline salesman while in Oklahoma and as a gasoline tanker truck driver for Mobil Oil Company in Concord. After retiring from Mobil Oil, he worked as a school janitor in the Contra Costa County School District, retiring again in 1975.

Glenn did not serve in the military. He was too young to serve in World War I and was exempted from service in World War II because of age and size of family. His thr4ee sons all served, Kenneth in the Navy in World War II, Robert and Glenn Arland in the Army later.

In 1977, Glenn and Etta sold their home in Concord and moved to Callaway, Florida, a suburb of Panama City, a purchased a home at 247 Sukoshi Drive. They moved to be near their daughter, Linda Joyce, and her husband, Robert Louis "Dan" DANIELL who was then stationed at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida.

At the age of 75, Glenn personally built a large workshop/barn behind his house. He maintained a large garden in his yard and provided vegetables to his neighbors for years.

In 1980, Linda and Dan bought the home next to Glenn and Etta. Before moving in, Dan told Linda, "I'm not even going to try to compete with your father for the best yard in the neighborhood."

In 1990, Glenn fell and broke his hip. He was in and out of a nursing home until his death in Gulf Coast Memorial Hospital, Panama City, Florida on 5 December 1990.

"GLENN J DITMORE 16 Apr 1903 05 Dec 1990 (not specified) (none specified) 444-01-5950 Oklahoma" [SSDI]

Glenn married Etta Mae CASADY,42 daughter of Devol CASADY 43 and Nellie Ann WILMETH,44,45 on 28 January 1926 in Arapaho, Oklahoma. Etta was born on 5 October 1908 in Verden, Oklahoma,32,42 died on 23 August 1992 in Panama City, Bay County, Florida32 at age 83, and was buried on 26 August 1992 in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Bay County, Florida.

Marriage Notes: Original marriage ceremony performed on January 18, 1926 in Hydro, Oklahoma. On January 28, 1926, they received a notice that their marrige in Hydro was not legal because they married outside of the county which issued the marriage license. They purchased a new license January 28,1926 at Arapaho, Oklahoma and were legally married there by the same minister with the same witnesses present. There were some jokes about this.

General Notes: Etta Mae CASADY was born on October 5, 1908 in Verden, Oklahoma. At the age of four, her mother, Nellie WILMETH, died giving birth to an unnamed daughter who died on the same date, May 14, 1913. Her sister Lula Bird CASADY, who was 16 when their mother died, became the "woman of the house" and raised Etta. When Lula married John LAWRENCE, Etta went to live with them. The 1920 census confirms "E. M. CASADY" age 11, sister-in-law, living in the Lawrence household.
