Will abstract, Wills in Charleston, Will Book 1761-1771, "Pages 249-250. John THOMAS, Jr.: June 27, 1767-June 14, 1768. Wit.: John ELDERS, John TAYLOR, Matthew Anderson THOMAS. Ex.: Wife, John THOMAS, Sr., Thomas TAYLOR, John HOPKINS. Wife: Mary. Son: John THOMAS (III, RLD). Daughters: Mary, Sarah."

General Notes: Wife -

Mary HAY is a daughter of William HAY and Mary TAYLOR, daughter of John and Lucy TAYLOR. She first married John THOMAS, second Joel THREEWITS, and then Ethel HEATH.
In her will of August 15,1807, Mary HEATH, widow of Ethel HEATH,, names her daughter, Mary THREEWITS.
A. S. SALLEY wrote: "After the death of Capt. Joel THREEWITS his widow married Ethel HEATH. On February 26, 1802, John THREEWITS, of Orangeburg, District, wherein his plantation then lay, sold the 350 acres of land on waters of Stevens Creek that had been granted to his father in 1733 to Jonathan WEAVER. His wife, Mary, renounced dower as did his step-mother, Mrs. Mary (Ethel) Heath, who was at the time a widow residing in Richland District." He also wrote: "Mrs. Mary Heath made her will August 15, 1807, and it was probated November 28, 1807. Her daughter "Mary Threewits" and John Threewits, husband, were named as two of the executors. Her husband Ethel Heath had died in 1796. In his will he mentions his wife Mary and her "first husband John Thomas." John Threewits was named as executor. John Threewit’s sister Martha married a Tucker and his sister E1izabeth married, June 14, 1780 Hicks Chappell, a captain of South Carolina militia. Mrs. Chappell died July 4, 1841, her husband having predeceased her, April 11, 1830." (From all this, "Mary THREEWITS", husband of John, is Mary THOMAS, daughter of John THOMAS and Mary HAY. RLD)
In the 1807 LW&T of Mary Taylor Hay HEATH, she names Mary THREEWITS as her daughter. This gets interesting, if not convoluted. Mary TAYLOR, daughter of John and Lucy TAYLOR, married first William HAY, who died in 1784. She then married Thomas HEATH. Joel THREEWITS married Mary THOMAS, widow of John THOMAS, III. John THOMAS III married Mary, last name unknown, now believed to be Mary HAY.

Deed Book 6, page 535. (Note: Probate indicates that one of the above witnesses was Jeremiah THREEWITS.) Note from Audrey: "Jemima" THREEWITTS is definitely a name in the family as shown by records from VA to SC; error may be in transcribing Jemima to Jeremiah in the probate record, rather than the will itself. (aep)
Deed Book 6, Brunswick County, VA: "Elizabeth HARWELL of Southampton Co to John WILLIAMSON of Brunswick Co. 16 July 1760. No amount. William HAY is thought to be the name of Mary TAYLOR's first husband, "a man named HAY". Some say Mary married Thomas HAY.

General Notes: Husband -

Thomas HEATH was the second husband of Mary TAYLOR HAY. Mary's LW&T is dated 1807. Thomas is not mentioned in it, having probably died before then.

General Notes: Wife -

Mary TAYLOR married first William (?) HAY. William HAY is thought to be the name of Mary TAYLOR's first husband, "a man named HAY." Some say Mary married Thomas HAY. William HAY does not mention Mary as his wife in his will of 1784. Filed with William's will is "a paper, dated September 14, 1776, witnessed by Wm. MEYER and Phil. PEARSON, in which Mary HAY, for consideration, renounces all claim on William HAY, her husband, with whom there were many irreconcilable differences." ("History of Richland County", Green, p. 214)
After William's death, Mary married Thomas HEATH, who died about 1807.
This is said to be the LW&T of Mary HAY, daughter of William and Mary Taylor HAY, widow of John THOMAS and Ethel HEATH, as excerpted in the SC Archives: Series Number: S108093 Reel: 0021 Frame: 00624 item: 00 Date: 1807 C. Description: HEATH, Mary of Richland District, Will Typescript (MSS Will: Book E, p. 81; Estate Packet: Box 13, Pkg 324) (3 Frames). Adelaide HOWELL, 21, single, lives in the home of her brother, Albert J., in the 1900 census of Fulton County, Georgia.
"HOWEL, Adelaide Sister W F Dec 1878 21 S GA GA GA." This shows an alternate birth date, vice 21 May 1879.

From the Handbook of Texas Online:
"SOUTHWOOD, JAMES EDWARD (1854-1940). James Edward Southwood, rancher and public official, the oldest of six children of Edward and Hannah (Hurst) Southwood, was born on March 5, 1854, at Martinsburg, [Berkeley County] Virginia. Two years later his father, a slaveholder, moved the family to Lafayette County, Missouri, and settled south of Lexington. There James grew up amid the chaos of the Civil War and Reconstruction. In 1873, at the age of nineteen, he accompanied William Greene, a neighbor, to Rice County, Kansas, and helped him build a new homestead. Southwood then hired out to A. B. Cady, with whom he stayed ten years while working as a freighter. In May 1886, after spending two years in Burlingame, Kansas, Southwood was hired by the Finch, Lord and Nelson Cattle Company to help drive a herd of Hereford cattle from Dodge City to the Shoe Bar Ranch in Hall County, Texas, a distance of 250 miles. The six-week trip brought the first registered Hereford stock to the Panhandle. Southwood stayed to help organize the company's Bar 96 Ranch before returning to Kansas. In December he and nine other company employees came back to the Panhandle. At Clarendon they filed on a section of railroad-grant land in Carson County, adjacent to the townsite of Panhandle City. The following spring they camped near Dixon Creek while surveying their claims and erecting homesteads. After a blue norther destroyed their main office, housed in a tent, a representative declared that the company could not afford to set it up again. All left to take jobs on the Bar 96 except Southwood, who remained to protect the claims and see the townsite project through. He greeted the first train to arrive in Panhandle City in January 1888.
Southwood served as the first county constable when Carson County was organized in June 1888. He worked at various jobs, including selling real estate, until 1890, when he entered the grain, coal, and ice business. In 1892 he was elected county tax assessor; he served two terms. He sold his grain business to John Callaghan in 1895 and then formed a partnership with John Haggart to open a grocery store, which they sold in 1904 to John Dees. Because of poor health Southwood made a prolonged visit to his brother in California and sister in Washington before retiring to his section one mile east of Panhandle, which became his permanent home. He was elected Carson county judge in 1906. He also became a stockholder in the Panhandle Bank, of which he became director after its reorganization in 1927 as the First National Bank of Panhandle. On April 25, 1911, Southwood married Dena Held, a teacher in the Panhandle school and daughter of Ludwig Held, who had come in 1900 from Petersburg, Illinois, to invest in seven sections of land. The Southwoods lived on Held's land east of town. Over the years, Judge Southwood became legendary for his tolerance, generosity, and ability as an arbitrator. He died on August 25, 1940, and was buried in the Panhandle Cemetery.
