Peterson HARRIS, son of Samuel HARRIS (~1763-1829) & Nancy UNKNOWN (~1772-1829), in Hancock Co., GA. Peterson was born aft 1795. Peterson Harris was still a minor on 6 Jan 1817. Peterson died in Hancock Co., GA, on 8 Nov 1826.
Hancock Co., Ga, Court of Ordinary Minutes 1799-1817, p. 736, 6 Jan 1817: "Ordered that Samuel Harris be and he is hereby appointed guardian over the property of his son Peterson Harris a minor."
Elizabeth Wiley Smith, in her History of Hancock County, Georgia, (p. 84) has a birth date of 1785 for Peterson Harris. If, however, Peterson Harris was still a minor in Jan 1817 (when his father was appointed guardian for the property), Peterson's birth date was probably on or after 1795.
Estate: Hancock County, GA, Court of Ordinary Minutes 1817-1837, p. 640, 5 Jan 1830: "On application it is ordered that Miles G Harris and William P Ford be and are hereby appointed guardians of the property of William, James M, John A Wiley [there is no comma in the abstract between John and A and Wiley] and Henry Harris orphans of Peterson Harris dec'd devised to them by their Grandfather the late Samuel Harris dec'd and that they give bond and security in the sum of twenty thousand Dollars for the faithful performance of their duties as guardians."

Ghostly tales: Wiregrass full of stories of haunts and spirits By Peggy Ussery
"Grancer Harrison's Grave, Kinston
Nobody threw parties like William "Grancer" Harrison.
Born in Edgefield County, S.C., Harrison came to Coffee County in the 1830s. He homesteaded land along the Pea River and built his home on a bluff overlooking the river. From his plantation home, Grancer Harrison hosted barbecues and dances with fiddle music. As the popularity of Grancer's parties grew, he built a large dance hall to accommodate his guests.
Grancer often entertained his guests with his dancing skills. He had specially-made clogs and even a suit for his parties.
As Grancer aged, he began to lay out how he wanted to be buried \emdash wearing his dancing clothes and clogs and lying on his feather bed. He wanted to be within earshot of his dance hall. And when he finally died, Grancer was buried as specified in what today is known as Harrison Cemetery.
The dances continued for awhile after Grancer's death, but they were never the same. Eventually, guests stopped coming and the music came to an end. Or did it?
It wasn't long after the dances ended that stories were told of fiddle music and tapping shoes being heard near the area of Grancer's grave. There's even an account that if you touch the four corners of his grave, Grancer himself will come out and hand you his fiddle.
The landscape has changed around Grancer Harrison's old homestead. The wooden structure that once covered his tomb is gone as are his dancing hall and home. Grancer's tomb has been vandalized and rebuilt twice.
But it's hard to miss Grancer's large above-ground tomb, surrounded by the graves of his family, with only the occasional sound of traffic within earshot."

General Notes: Husband -

Michael THOMAS is said to have fathered 24 children by his two wives, Catherine, the first 15 and Eva Susannah Margaretha HART, the next nine.

"Eva Thomas is said by many to be a child by Michael's second wife. However, her children's birth dates seem to dispel these claims. She was more likely the youngest child by Michael's first wife." (The Thomas Trail", chap. 11, p. 2, Bud Thomas)

General Notes: Wife -

"Michael THOMAS Sr.'s second wife was Eve Susannah Margaretha HART. Eve was born in Germany in 1751, the daughter of Valentine or Elijah[1] HART and Anna Maria (last name unknown). She came to America at a very young age on a ship loaded with indentured servants. She was sold in Virginia for a term of seven years to pay her passage. Catherine, first wife of Michael THOMAS, died in 1768 and Michael married Eve very soon after (before January 17, 1769) when she was only about 18 years of age and Michael was about 50.
The following was written by John "Gus" DOYLE, who spent much of his life accumulating information and writing about the various branches of this THOMAS family. It was transcribed by Sue BISHOP. John Doyle and Sue Bishop's grandmothers were sisters and granddaughters of Sarah THOMAS, daughter of Plummer THOMAS. This is another person who claims that Plummer THOMAS was a child by Michael's second wife.
It has been edited in places to clarify and shorten:
"According to tradition in the family, Eva (Eve) Susanna Margaretha HART, second wife of Michael THOMAS, was the daughter of a Spanish Lord, and her father owned a castle on the Rhine River. There, she was well educated for that time, as women didn't receive as much education as the men. It is said that Eva (Eve) and a girlfriend were in Holland and while at the Port of Amsterdam they were intrigued by the sailing ships and trading going on. A Captain of one of the ships offered to show them around the ship, but when they were ready to leave, they found they were prisoners and the vessel soon sailed for the new world (America). They landed in Maryland and both were leased out (indentured) by planters to pay for their passage. They worked in the flax fields as indentured servants until one day they got (ran) away and Eva (Eve) married Michael (THOMAS)". Other similar stories can be found about Eve including one that says the ship was loaded with wives headed to America.
Most of these stories sound a little exaggerated to the writer but this type of kidnapping to the new world was a risk one took when they ventured on board on of these emigrant vessels, circa 1765. Some of the articles infer that Eve's father was Irish but probably revolted against the English authority, moved his family to Spain and thence to the Rhine River area in Germany where he added to his financial position. The Proof of the Eve HART immigration stories is not known but they probably each have some factual significance.
Following the death of her husband in 1799, Eve Hart THOMAS moved to Lewis County, Kentucky and lived the remainder of her days in the home of her son, Solomon. She wrote her will in 1824 naming the children of Solomon as her heirs, except Jane. Her will was probated 20 April 1829 in Lewis County, Kentucky. Eve is buried at the old Conley burying ground about three miles up Holly Creek in Lewis County, Kentucky."

There is a difference of opinion on who was the father of James HATCHER. James is placed with Robert HATCHER here because it is convienient for this compiler who has no information to prefer either of the two opinions below.
"James Hatcher of Dallas Co., Alabama and Jeremiah Hatcher, were brothers and were sons of Robert Hatcher and Ann Sanders...My position is based on the Research of S. C. Moore, a Genealogist who resided in Atlanta and spent over 30 years Researching Hatcher. He was considered by numerous people as the foremost authority on the Hatchers and some of the related lines." (Robert E. Hatcher, email) Another researcher concludes that James HATCHER and two other siblings are children of Edward Goode HATCHER and must have been living in the household of William HATCHER Sr. after Edward Goode HATCHER died because they ended up listed in William HATCHER Sr.'s Bible.

James married Martha TATE.

POSTMASTERS & POST OFFICES OF FREESTONE COUNTY, TEXAS 1850 - 1930 names Rich'd J. Hatcher, as a postmaster at Fairfield (Freestone), 15 Apr 1891.
Judge Richard J. HATCHER Jr.'s obituary appeared in the July 28, 1908 issue of the "The Texas Republic" newspaper of San Antonio:
"R J Hatcher [Jr}, the founder and for many years editor of The Frost (Navarro Caounty) Star, died at his home on the 28th ultimo. The death of Mr Hatcher is a loss to the State, and especially to the newspaper fraternity: He was an honest, conscientious, kindly gentleman, whose pen was always directed in behalf of those interests he deemed best for his State and her people. His stricken family have the earnest sympathy of The Republic.
The Frost Star is deepest mourning over the sad death of its efficient, hospitable editor, Judge R J Hatcher. Judge R J Hatcher was one of the best known and most loved newspaper editors of Texas, and his loss will be felt and bemoaned throughout the state. His editorials have been copied and reproduced in the columns of some of the largest dailies, and there are few weeklies within the boards of Texas, who have not used the work of his pen in some way. Judge Hatcher, after being a patient sufferer for several months, succumbed to the inevitable tuberculosis Tuesday, July 28, and was put away to rest forever Wednesday. Judge R J Hatcher has gone, but his memory will last for all time to come."

Robert E. Hatcher <rhatcher@sw.rr.com>, contributor to the "Descendants of William HATCHER, 1613-1680" provides this comment concerning the wife of Robert HATCHER, born about 1731 in Henrico County, Virginia: "Robert is believed to have married Ann Sanders based on a marriage record found in Amelia Co, VA, that record has been damaged to the point that only "Robert Hatcher to Ann San" is legible. The date is also very unclear and may be 1791, which if correct makes it impossible for this marriage to pertain to this Robert. There have been no Sanders or Hatcher families found in AmeliaCo in the 1750s time frame, but there were Hatchers there in the 1790s. There has been no other record found giving his wife's first name. In several instances the middle name of Sanders has been found in many family trees for the descendants of Robert, but the records found to date show that the first proven individual to carry this middle name is Reuben Sanders Hatcher, the grandson of his brother, Edward Goode Hatcher. The next instance is Robert Sanders Hatcher, a great grandson of Robert. Although some have the middle initial "S", the full name of Sanders has not been proven through any currently known records.
For a number of years Josiah Hatcher, who married Lavinia Clay, had been attached as a son of this Robert and Ann Sanders Hatcher. The more recent research of Greg Hatcher, a descendant of Josiah, shows that Josiah through a preponderance of the evidence is most likely the son of Edward and Sarah Hatcher of BedfordCo, VA. There have been no records found relating to this Robert that indicates he had a son, Josiah, and it is unclear what reasoning was used to claim Josiah as a son.
Another major change has been made concerning another "son." For years it has been believed that William Hatcher who married Priscilla Nunnalee was the son of this Robert. Additional research and analysis of the available records indicates that indeed, Robert had a son William, but it was not William and Priscilla who resided in ElbertCo, GA.
The recent addition of Edward as a son is based only on the fact that Henry Hatcher administered the estate of Edward who died intestate and apparently without heirs. Since it is usual for a direct member of the family to be assigned as an administrator, Henry is assumed to be Edward's brother and a son of Robert."

General Notes: Wife -

Sarah Ann HATCHER, daughter of James HATCHER and Sarah Hardin CLAY, was born about 1831 as indicated from her age, 19, on the 1850 census and 28 on the 1860. She is listed as 44 in 1880. The 1900 census provides Oct 1837 and age 62 inconsistant with a marriage in 1846 at age 9. In another anomoly, the 1900 census provides that Sarah "Sallie" and her second husband, William DANIELS [sic] have been married 34 years but the marriage is recorded in the History of Wilkinson County as 1852, consistant with the 1860 census listing of their children.

Sarah married George W. SHINHOLSER, her first husband, on 3 March 1846 in the Liberty Baptist Church, Wilkinson County, Georgia.

Wilkinson County, Georgia Estate Records, Microfilm Roll #6930 is a continuation of Wilkinson County, Ga Estate Records: p. 610: "Rec'd the Eighth day of February Eighteen hundred and forty seven of Sarah HATCHER guardian for Sarah (Ann HATCHER) SHINHOLSER legatee of the Estate of James HATCHER, late of Wilkinson county deceased One hundred and fifty six dollars of all demands - - - my wife Sarah Ann SHINHOLSER. Liberty Baptist Church records list George's death on 16 August 1847.

In 1850, Sarah SHINHOLSTER, 19, widowed, and her daughter, Georgiana, 2, reside in the household of Sarah HATCHER, age 55, in Wilkinson.

Sarah Ann DANIEL, wife of William Harper DANIEL, is age 28 in the Wilkinson County, Georgia census. Georgia SHINHOLSER [sic], age 12, William's step-daughter, lives in their household.

In 1900, Sarah and William are in Emanuel County, Georgia. Sarah "Sallie" has had 10 children, eight still living, Robert Franklin, the youngest, is still with his parents.
