General Notes: Wife - Sarah "Maria Del Carmen?" HILL

From the Andrea Papers, citing the Church Register of the Cathedral of St. Augustine, St. Augustine, Florida: "MARIA del CARMEN HILL...Daughter born 1770 in Edgefield County, S.C. and married 28 Dec 1787 in St. Augustine Cathedral to FRANCISCO XAVIER SANCHEZ She died at St. Mary in Camden County, Ga. before 31Aug. 1813".
From "Vicky", received from Billie Jones: ....... 2 Maria del Carmen "Sarah" Hill b: 1770 in ,,South Carolina".
1786 Census of St. Augustine and Its Perimeter, (MILLS, 1992, p. 7-8. #22. - Sara, daughter, native of the same, single, of the same religon, age 15. (Also listed as 15 in the 1787 census, b. 1771/72??)
Comparing this data, I think that Maria and Sarah were two different children.
From family Bible of Theophilus HILL, son of Lodowick HILL: Sarah HILL, b. 18 Feby. 1796; m...SANCHEZ, moved to Fla.
Is this a conflict, or was Allen Sarah's second husband?
"I see the info from the Theophilus Hill family Bible that you mention above in "The Hills, Vol 1," page 165. "Family tradition has confused this Sarah [ Dr Allen Robison's wife] with her aunt Sarah, who did marry a Sanchez and live in FL."---"The Hills," page 486. That is, Sarah (Maria del Carmen) Hill, daughter of Theophilus Hill and Theresa Thomas, b, 1770, d. ca. 1813 in Camden County, GA, married Francisco Xavier Sanchez in 1787. "Sarah Grigsby HILL and Dr Allen ROBISON (my gg grandparents had seven children, five more than the two shown on the chart, according to "The Hills of Wilkes Co:" Susan, Sarah Lark, Mary E., Teresa, Rachel L., Lodowick Hill and John Lark. Lodowick Hill (my great grandfather) and his brother, John Lark, married two CHRISTIAN sisters, one of whom died. The widower then married a third sister. According to my father, both brothers and their families lived in the same house in AL, and if a child misbehaved he was as likely to "get a whipping" from his aunt or uncle as his mother or father. We have a raft of double cousins from these unions, some of whom moved to Kemper County, MS, and are still living in the area. (Gil Robison, email, 11/07/2004)

The case for Theophilus HILL not being a Tory: "The Hills of Wilkes County, Georgia, Vol 2" says a SC indent shows that Theophilus Hill was paid L 161.3.10 1/2 for for provisions provided to the Continental Army, and the SC militia in 1781-1782. His son, Lodowick Hill, served as a Sgt in the Continental Army. My guess is that the Tory story came up to replace an unsavory truth: Theophilus moved to east FL in order to avoid being prosecuted for murder. I have seen a microfilm of the warrant for his arrest. He was accused of murdering a Joseph Whitney in July, 1785, in Camden County, GEORGIA, not Camden, SC, as is sometimes stated. A reward of L 50 in specie (that is, in gold, not paper money) was offerred for his capture. It also mentions TH's having escaped to East Florida. "The Hills of Wilkes County, Vol 1," published in 1922, contains family stories of his being in Santo Domingo (Haiti) and losing his slaves in the slave revolt there. However, this is disputed in Volume 2, published in the 80's. Nonetheless, the story had to come from somewhere, and that would be interesting to know about. Perhaps it was a relative or other associate who was in Haiti, and the story was garbled with the telling over the years. Theophilus Hill sounds like an interesting character. Hal Mcknight Lattimore, son of Halbert Shivers Lattimore and Kate Mcknight, was born 13 October 1920 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas. His father, age 28, was born in Fort Worth and was a lawyer. His mother, age 23, was born in Texas and was a housewife. Certificate Number 57615.

Find A Grave Memorial# 127190951 records Judge Hal McKnight Lattimore is buried in Mansfield Cemetery, Mansfield, Tarrant County, Texas. It also presents this obituary:

FORT WORTH \emdash He survived a close encounter with a shark, the crash-landing of a glider he was riding in and the 1992 shootings in a Tarrant County courthouse \emdash not to mention World War II. But former 2nd Court of Appeals Judge Hal M. Lattimore, who followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather who had themselves been jurists, could not escape death forever. Judge Lattimore, 93, died Thursday of congestive heart failure at his home with his family at his side. Those who knew him best say there were two sides to him. One was his love of the law. The other was a sense of adventure. In both he was always willing to help anybody who he thought needed it. And in both, he never backed down from a challenge. "If Hal wanted to do it, if he had a passing fancy for it, he gave it everything he had and didn't stop until he was the best you could possibly be at it," said 2nd Court of Appeals Judge Bill Meier, who said that Judge Lattimore was one of the first lawyers he met when he moved to Tarrant County in 1969. In 1973, in his first year as a state senator, Meier, by then a law partner of Judge Lattimore's, recommended that Gov. Dolph Briscoe appoint Judge Lattimore to fill a vacancy on the 96th state District Court bench \emdash the same one that Judge Lattimore's father had held. Judge Lattimore felt at home whether below the surface of the sea or above the clouds in the sky. After a 1978 Star-Telegram article in which he told the story of coming face to face with a hammerhead estimated at 14 feet long and 1,000 pounds and how, rather than swim away, he charged at it, courthouse colleagues hung a photo of him inscribed with the words, "WHO ELSE could scare a shark?"
Legal mentor
Judge Lattimore was born Oct. 13, 1920, in Fort Worth to Judge Hal. S. Lattimore and Kate McKnight Lattimore. After graduating from high school, he headed for Baylor University. While there he earned his pilot's license in anticipation of what would become World War II. During the war he flew transport planes. Afterward he resumed his studies at the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned his law degree. In college, he was a champion fencer, helped found a chapter of the honorary legal fraternity Phi Alpha Delta and served as a flying instructor for a university club. He practiced law with his father from 1948 until the senior Lattimore's death in 1969.
State District Judge David L. Evans, presiding judge of the 8th Administrative Judicial Region, credited Judge Lattimore, his uncle, with helping him through law school and his early years as a lawyer. "Hal was tremendous influence on my life, and I owe a great deal of any success I have had to him," Evans said Saturday. "He was more than an uncle; he was mentor and a friend." On July 1, 1992, Judge Lattimore, by then a member of the 2nd Court of Appeals, was in his chambers when a gunman opened fire at the bench, killing two lawyers and wounding two other members of the court. A third lawyer was also shot.
A soaring personality
Judge Lattimore loved the outdoors and would make his own tents on camping and hunting trips, his son Michael Lattimore said. He helped found the Southwest Council of Diving Clubs and served as its first president, but flying, whether in a motorized plane or a glider, remained his first passion. After decades of membership, leadership and participation, Judge Lattimore was honored by the Soaring Association of America with the creation of the Hal M. Lattimore Trophy, presented each year. Michael Lattimore said Saturday that he couldn't recall ever hearing his father curse. "He acted the way you were expected to act," he said. That extended to his willingness to help others. Meier said Judge Lattimore was the only lawyer he ever knew who didn't mail out invoices. Instead, he waited for clients to realize they hadn't paid. "He once said that as a lawyer you have to make yourself available to the people who need you," Michael Lattimore said. "There was no fee schedule with him. He sized you up, and if he thought you were really trying, by God he would come out with all guns blazing."
Judge Lattimore's survivors also include his wife of 64 years, Virginia Hill Lattimore; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Lattimore; a sister, Mary Kay Evans; four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. General Notes: Husband - Wylie HILL

Will of Wylie Hill.
In the name of God, Amen : I Wylie Hill of the County of Wilkes and State of Georgia, being of sound mind and perfect memory, blessed be God, do make and ordain this to be my last will and testament, in manner following, that is to say:
First as to my body I wish it to be decently buried in the garden where my two little granddaughters are buried.
I wish for all my just debts to be paid first and then the balance to be divided as I shall state in this my last will February Thirteenth, Eighteen Hundred and thirty seven.
I wish for my wife and my three sons to have the management of my property at my death, as the boys come of age they will see to it.
I wish to have a house built over my grave large enough to cover my dear wife also, let the sils be out of old post oak 14 inches square set on rocks one foot from the ground. Have the frame about five feet high covered with good heart shingles fully one inch thick after they are drawn, and good heart weather boarding painted black.
My will and desire is that my dear wife shall have those slaves during her life or widowhood for to support her and my two youngest sons Wylie P. Hill and A. T. W. Hill and school them. These are the negroes I leave to my dear wife: Edward and his wife Sarah and their two youngest children, one leg Grace and their two sons Tony and Frank and one set of the blacksmith Tools, Amanda and Vilo Jacob and his wife Grace and their youngest children Cato and Sandy Squire and Gideon Jeffrey and the use of the upper mill to grind for her during her natural life or widowhood. As to the children, my son Burwell P. Hill had by Martha his last wife, I will them one dollar a piece, and as to the part that would fall to my son Burwell P. Hill's heirs, my will and desire is that his daughter by his first wife should have it, Sarah Ann Eliza Render Hill if she should live to have heir and if she should die it's all to fall back to my children that's living at that time.
My house and plantation where I now live for the use of my dear wife during her life or widowhood, and at her death to go to my son Abraham T. W. Hill making the Crews Creek the line down the meanders of said creek to be the line until it goes to the fork below Clark road, thence to take a due East line to the back line towards James Render's old place, all to the south of that line I give to my son Wylie P. Hill, to him, his heirs and assigns forever, as far as my land goes toward Washington, the Newton and Lacky place, and Parks place and Wylie Burks place also, and all on the North of that line, the Clark place, John Hill place and the King place and Barnes Place and the John McGehee place and the saw and grist mills I give to my son Abraham T. W. Hill his heirs and assigns forever:
The Abraham Hill place and the 212 acres up by Sardus and the 100 acres the Thomas Johnston place I give to my son Lodowick M. Hill in lieu of the Dodson place to him his heirs and assigns forever. Now should my son Lodowick M. Hill be pleased with the swap, my son Wylie P. Hill falls heir to the Abraham Hill place and the Sardus lands and the Thomas Johnston lands also. The balance of my landed property to be sold and to be divided between my four daughters, and as to my household furniture I wish at my wife's death to be flung into as many lots as I have living children at that time and to be equally divided among them. I don't wish anything sold out of the house, and as to my Buncombe lands, and stock thats there, I wish to be kept together if it suits for a retreat to any of the children thats amind to go.
My wife is to have Carpenter James and his wife Hester and Hannah and one of the small girls also, for which I had left out above.
I leave to my dear wife her carriage and her two choice mules and one road wagon and the best team of mules, one ox wagon and two yoke of oxen, and two of her choice in the horses, and as much of the stock of cattle and hogs as my executors may think will do her and all the balance of the stock and property to be sold and equally divided between my living children at my death, and all the property that I leave to my wife and all the proceeds after supporting her and my two youngest sons to be divided at her death equally between all her living children.
Now these that are married and had of some property I have valued all that I gave them. Burwell P. Had Three thousand and twenty eight Dollars, Lodowick M. Hill Thirty one hundred and seventy three dollars, Sarah C. W. Jordan had three thousand and ninety eight dollars, Martha P. DuBose had Twenty eight hundred and ninety three dollars, Tabitha W. Duncan had twenty eight hundred and ninety five dollars. Now as to the landed property I left to my sons has nothing to do with any other property and also the landed property I left to be sold for my four daughters, has nothing to do with other property. I divided that myself those children that has those amounts of property are so much ahead of the other children which must all be made equal at the division: you will see my valuation on the back part of this book. Now all the money that is due me at my death is to be divided between my wife and my dear children to make them all equal, and as to the ready money thats in hand at my death, I wish to finish my two youngest son's education. As to the boy Joel / loaned to Sally Holmes, at her death, he is to be divided as my other property was (?). If my wife wants my gig and harness, let her have it, also now my dear children and wife I never want any of you to have any coldness nor any hard thoughts among any of you about what I leave behind, for my property I worked for, it wasn't given to me. I have left you all a plenty: and took as good care of it as I could, and I wish to dispose of it as I see proper.
Now my dear wife I have left old man Edward to you during your natural life. I want him treated well and never to be put out under an overseer. I wish for him to do any thing he can for you, but not to be treated ill by anybody, and let him have time to make him a little crop, and land convenient for him to tend, he has been a faithful slave to me, and I want him favored in his old age. I should have left him to have served nobody but I have seen the evil of it they have come to suffer, and when it is the will of God to take you, I wish for him and his wife to go and live with any one of my children that they wish to, that will treat them well, let them have their choice, he has helped me to get what I have got.
I constitute nominate and appoint my wife Martha executrix and my sons Lodowick M. Hill and Wylie P. Hill and Abraham T. W. Hill as they become of age my executors of this my last will andtestament and in Witness Whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 13th day of February 1837.

General Notes: Wife - Mary STANLEY

Mary STANLEY, daughter of Samuel STANLEY, is said to be born about 1769 because her gravestone says "Mrs. Mary Hillegas//died September 21, 1859//aged 90 years." [Transcribed by Marian Stanley Tucker] In the 1850 census, Mary [Stanley (William) Howell (Robert) Hendrick (Charles) Williamson (William)] HILLEGAS is age 70, born about 1779/80, and her daughter Sarah T. [Howell] WALTERS, age 53 [born about 1797]. The difference of 10 years is of interest, but does not make her too young to have been the mother of Sarah Taylor HOWELL born between 1795 and 1797 per the 1850 and 1860 censuses.

"I will give the following on other Stanley lines in early S.C. In old Cheraw Dist. there was a Revolutionary soldier named Moses STANLEY, and he is listed as Pvt. in Greggs History of Old Cheraw. We know nothing more about him. However, in 1790 U.S. Census of Cheraw 35 Dist., S.C., is listed Capt. Samuel STANLEY born in Va. (New Kent County, I think) and was Capt. in Rev. War in Va., moved thence to Cheraw and then to Columbia, S.C. He died there about 1813 and his wife was a Miss HENDRICKS, daughter. of Capt. William HENDRICKS a Rev. soldier from Cheraw. They had two sons, Robert Hendricks STANLEY and William Byrd STANLEY, and a dau. who m. Henry McGOWAN, dau. Elizabeth m. TRAPP, and dau. Mary who married 4 times, first to Wm. HOWELL; 2nd to Dr. Robert HENDRICKS; 3rd to _____WILLIAMSON, and fourth William HILLEGUS of Charleston. In 1850 this lady filed an affidavit that she was the niece of my g.g.grandfather Capt. Robert PASLAY, Rev. soldier, and that she at that time living in Cheraw district S.C. This affidavit in Washington, D.C., in Capt. Robert PASLAY Revolutionary File R. 7988. In 1790 Capt. Robert PASLAY 2ndly married Elizabeth CROCKER. His first wife was Sarah (which I take to be HENDRICKS, being his niece makes me say that) I come from the 2nd wife Elizabeth CROCKER.
Robert Hendricks STANLEY and another son William Byrd STANLEY, who was long time Mayor of Columbia, S.C., about the time of the Civil War. This family long ran the Stanley China shop in Columbia, S.C., and they are buried in the Stanley Family graveyard in Columbia, S.C. In Vol. 4: Wallace 'Hist. Of South Carolina' there is a Genealogy of this family.
There was an early methodist of S.C., Rev. LEDBETTER also. They are found in History of Methodism in S.C., by Betts.

"Mary "Polly" STANLEY was a daughter of Samuel STANLEY and his first wife, --------Paslay, both from Virginia. Mary Polly is buried in the Stanley plot here adjacent to the First Presbyterian Church. Her birth and death dates are on her marker, and I'll go look at them tomorrow when I am in town and let you know. In Old and New Columbia, if I remember correctly, the author thinks her birth date somewhat short, for he said that she was married to two Revolutionary officers, Howell and Hendrick." "This afternoon I went to the Stanley plot in the churchyard. It is so beautiful there; the trees are expertly pruned and about to go into full bloom in just a few weeks. The ground cover is composed of millions of tiny violets and small white blooms. The entire cemetery is a showplace right in the middle of the town.
On the gravestone of Mary Polly Stanley's is written: Mrs. Mary Hillegas//died September 21, 1859//aged 90 years. If she were ninety when she died, then she would have been born in 1769. As I mentioned last night, some think the date late, in as much as she married two officers of the Revolution, Captain Howell and Dr. Hendrick.
I also looked at the Duke grave I mentioned. It says: Thomas Wells Duke//1795-1818//Son of Charles O. and Dorothea Duke ("This is one of the stones we had to remake, as the original one was falling apart. We could not make out the wording on the lower part of the old one. As I remember, it said something about his being killed in a war." Marian Stanley Tucker)
My grandfather, Charles Duke Stanley was evidently named for the father listed here, but no one ever told me anything about this.
I do not believe I ever had a copy of Dr. Robert's will and other papers, but I'm sure one could be procured at the SC Archives. Some years ago, I did, however, hire Mr. Brent Holcombe, a certified genealogist, to find out what he could about the Hendrick family. Don't think he ever came across anything useful, other than the fact that Louisa Hendrick, his daughter, was sent to boarding school in North Carolina.
As an aside, my great-great uncle, Captain William Byrd Stanley, second son of Martha Hendrick (Duke) Stanley and Samuel Stanley, fought in the Mexican War, which was sometime before the War Between the States. Captain Stanley was awarded (according to my mother) a large gold round engraved gold piece, one of only seven given to certain members of the Palmetto Regiment who went to Mexico. My father inherited this gold piece.
Unfortunately, my father and mother had a terrible time during the Great Depression, and unbeknownst to Mother, Father sold the gold piece when they were in such terrible financial straits. Mother said she would have done almost anything to have kept it.
I'm sure that this piece at auction today, at Christie's in New York, would sell for somewhere in the high six figures, perhaps more. Uncle William also was given two silver dueling pistols by the City of Columbia, but I do not know what happened to them. He was very well off when living, president of the bank, mayor three times, many other honors.
I have found some of my papers this morning, and need to clarify Captain William Hendrick senior's position. He was a Member of the South Carolina Twelfth, Fourteenth, Fifteenth, and Sixteenth Royal Assemblies, from 1740 to 1747. (From Biographical Directory of the SC House of Representatives, Vol. II, Edgar and Bailey) According to my research, he married the second time Mary Vanderhorst, daughter of John Vanderhorst of the Charleston family by that name. Captain William Hendrick Sr.'s home was in Christ Church Parish, Charlestown, South Carolina.
I'll keep looking. Thanks, Marian Stanley" (Marian Stanley Tucker, email, 3/24/2005. RLD)

The mother of Mary Polly Stanley was -------Paslay from Virginia. I believe Samuel and Paslay had six daughters.
There is a lovely description of Mary Stanley when she was old in either the Selby or Williams book:
"Many evenings I have spent with my old friend, Mrs. Mary Hillegas [Mary Stanley]---reading to her news and advertisements from files of old papers, and listening to her interesting comments. Her memory was wonderful, and I have been able to corroborate some of her information in such a satisfactorary manner, that I take the balance as literally true. We would seat ourselves---the old lady taking a pinch of snuff, wiping her nose with a red silk handkerchief, holding her head aside, and then deftly using a handsome linen one conspicuously. The reading would then begin and the replies to queries be brought out, besides voluntary information.----[the memory of my old friend] is so complete, that I can safely venture considerable beyond my own times."
I visited the Stanley plot in the Presbyterian cemetery this morning and looked up the gravestone of Captain William Byrd Stanley's wife:
"In Memory of //Harriet Louisa Stanley//wife of//William B. Stanley//and daughter of//James D and Sarah Taylor Zimmerman//who departed this life//December 29, 1841 (gravestone so old I could not make out the last date here, but think it might say 1841)//in the 24th year of her age.//"Those who knew her best, loved her the most."
Obviously, the person recording the information you found omitted Harriet Louisa Zimmerman's name as she might have already been deceased.
It seems that Mary Stanley Howell was left a substantial estate by both her first and second marriages: Howell and Hendrick.
Thanks for the suggestions concerning Aunt Belle's journal. I'll tend to seeing it photographed ASAP.
Thanks, Marian Stanley (Amstucker@aol.com, To: roloda@knology.net May 11, 2005 Subject: Re: Aunt Belle's Journal) ["[Great] Aunt Belle" is Isabelle Ione Stanley Beard.]

General Notes: Husband - Capt. James TAYLOR, Sr., RS-SC

This short biography of James TAYLOR is in Edwin L. Green's A History of Richland County South Carolina::

"JAMES TAYLOR James TAYLOR's date of birth is unknown; his death took place in August, 1806. He married Mary HIRONS April 5, 1768, and after her death April 22, 1772, he married December of the same year Sarah DANIEL, daughter of James DANIEL, who died December 6, 1793. His home was near the intersection of Washington and Marion Streets. At this time a bold spring was near by, the water of which flowed down Marion to Taylor Street and thence to Harden Street and Rocky Branch. During the Revolution,, according to Johnson's Traditions, he took the oath of allegiance, but later, considering that the British had broken faith, he joined the patriots and was captured and would have been put to death had it not been for the false swearing of a neighbor. No record, however, shows this story to be true. Capt. James TAYLOR was commissary under Sumter and was stationed at the Congarees. At the census of 1790 he was the richest slaveholder in Richland County, being credited with 160 slaves. He was a commissioner in 1791 for the government of Columbia and was later a justice of the quorum for Richland County."

James TAYLOR recorded a deed on Jan. 14, 1771 for 150 acres between Horse Branch and the Congaree River. Names indexed in this deed are Ann HADDINGHA, Hester PESHEW, Casper FAUST, Henry WEAVER, Henry SEESTRUNK.

There is apparently no record on file of James TAYLOR's service during the Revolutionary War, but he is often referred to as in charge of the commissary, especially at the Congarees. He signed documents as assistant State commissary. (Green, "History of Richland County", p. 103-4.)

"After the Revolutionary War a strong feeling developed throughout the state that the seat of the state government should be changed from Charleston to a more central location. Many sites were discussed and in March, 1786 the General Assembly passed an Act providing for removal of the South Carolina capital from Charleston to a site "near Friday's Ferry on the Congaree River, including the plain of the hill whereon Thomas and James Taylor, Esquires, now reside". One reason for the choice of this location was that it was practically the geographical center of the state; another, that the head of the Congaree River had long been recognized as the natural gateway to the Up Country." ("A Guide to Columbia: South Carolina's capital city" by Jane Kealhofer Simons, page 11.)

James and his brother Colonel Thomas TAYLOR were elected representatives of Richland county to serve in the convention in Columbia for the purpose of revising, altering, or forming a new constitution for South Carolina. [The City Gazette, Charleston, South Carolina, Monday, February 15, 1790, Page 3]

In the 1790 census, Richland County, South Carolina, Series: M637 Roll: 11 Page: 140, James TAYLOR's household is shown as "1 3 4 - 160". He lives next door to his brother Thomas TAYLOR. In addition, he shown as executor on three estates: Wm. TUCKER, Thomas DORTCH, and John TAYLOR.

James TAYLOR who died in August 1806, married (1) Mary HIRONS (died April 21, 1772) on April 5, 1768. After Mary's death, James married (2) Sarah DANIEL on December 2, 1772. (http://www.palmettoroots.org/RichlandFamilies.html)

LAWSUIT: HITT AND WADE VERSUS RUSH ET AL Book 20, part 2, p. 237, January term, 1853 Error to Chancery court of Green (Co. Alabama)Defendants in error filed their bill in Chancery Court of Green County against HITT and WADE, alleging that on 10 April 1831 JOHN PEARSON, their maternal grandfather, then a resident of S.C. executed a deed of gift , which was duly recorded in that state,by which he conveyed certain slaves, in the bill named, to THOMAS H. WADE, as trustee to the sole and separate use of his daughter, MARTHA ANN RUSH, wife of JAMES RUSH; she to have sole possession of slaves during her natural life, and the remainder in said slaves and their increase to go to her children, who might be living at time of her death. Bill avers death of MARTHA,without having disposed of said slaves; that before the death of MRS. RUSH, one of the slaves, Eve, in 1839 came into possession of JOHN M HITT, who refuses to deliver them to complainants and claims them as his own; that the grantor , PEARSON, is dead;that WADE , the trustee, resides in S.
