WILLIAM STABLER was born on October 25, 1795 to Edward Stabler and Mary Pleasants in Alexandria, Virginia. William and his cousin, Edward Stabler, Jr. of Sandy Spring, Maryland entered the Westtown School in Pennsylvania (Smedley 1945). In the spring of 1808 they returned to Alexandria and entered a 17-year apprenticeship in Edward Stabler's shop (107 S. Fairfax St) that spanned the War of 1812. His cousin, Edward Stabler, Jr. was imprisoned for refusing to serve in the militia, but was soon freed. William was the only son of Edward and Mary Stabler who remained in Alexandria, and eventually he inherited his father's drug store.
William Stabler married Deborah Hewes at the on October 22, 1818 in Chesterfield, New Jersey at the Friends Meeting House (Alexandria Gazette [AG] 10/31/1818:3; Hindshaw 1973:748). She was the daughter of Abram Hewes and Rachel Miller of Alexandria.

Abraham (Abram) Hewes b. 3 Feb 1768, d. 30 Oct 1805
Was Nancy the widow of Abram Hewes?
In a settlement of the Estate of John O'DANIEL, deceased, "with his Executrix Ann HEWES late Ann O'DANIEL" dated 1807 and signed by her representative Jeremiah MOORE, we find the evidence that Ann remarried before 1807 to a man named HEWES. QUESTION: Was Nancy's second husband the Abram HEWES above?

General Notes: Wife - Anne McINTOSH

Anne "Nancy" McINTOSH was the daughter of John and Elizabeth McINTOSH of Fairfax, Virginia. The 1769 Will of John McINTOSH confirms that Anne, Catherine, Valinder, Lochlin, John, and Thomas were siblings.

Nancy's father died in 1769. An abstract of his will, proven 20 Jun 1769, does not indicate that she was married. She married John O'DANIEL after the death of his first wife, Elizabeth MOXLEY, probably after this date. (Note: Fairfax Harrison in his article "A Group of Northern Neck Families" in Tyler's Quarterly Magazine provides that John O'DANIEL's second wife was Ann "Nancy" BOWLING. Source documents prove that Ann "Nancy" McINTOSH, the daughter of John McINTOSH was the second wife of John O'DANIEL. This is explained in the General Notes for John O'DANIEL.)

When John O'DANIEL died, he had two under age daughters: Sarah and Levina Elizabeth. He also named in his will two grandchildren, James O'DANIEL and Mary BRAKELY [BLAKENEY] by his deceased son, John O'DANIEL. Fairfax Harrison wrote that "John, like the two under age daughters, probably was a son of his second marriage, to Nancy." Considering that this son's daughter was old enough to be married by 1798 indicates that his son John was likely born before 1760, and a son by Elizabeth MOXLEY, not by Nancy McINTOSH.

Anne's husband John O'DANIEL's will of 1798 states in part "I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Nancy ODANIEL all the tract of land where I Now live on Accotinck Run to her and her heirs lawfully begotten by me forever she to hold the said land without a division as long as she lives. Likewise I give and bequeath to my beloved Wife the following Negroes Viz Sam Harry & Anne & her increase to her and her Heirs lawfully Begotten by me forever she holding the same without division her life. Likewise I give and bequeath to my beloved wife five Hundred Acres of Land Lying in the state of Kentucky part of Greater track to her and her Heirs lawfully by me forever she holding the same without division during her life. Likewise I give and bequeath to my beloved wife all my household furniture stock plantation Utenshels (sic) still tools of all kinds that I possess on the plantation after my Just debts are paid to her & her Heirs lawfully begotten by me forever she holding the same her life without a Division."

Nancy's brother, Lachlan McINTOSH was one of John O'DANIEL's executors.

When John's will was inventoried and valued on January 25, 1799, Nancy O'DANIEL, the Executrix of the will, objected to having the Negro Grace and her increase, Charles, Jack, and Osbourn being a part of John's estate, contending that they were a part of her father's estate, not yet divided. These individuals were not included in John's estate. A transcribed document, said to be recorded in Drawer X, Fairfax County, Virginia, states: "Fairfax County to Wit To all Persons to Whom these presents shall Come or Concern, be it Known that We Benjamin KING, Nancy O'DANIEL, & Catherine McINTOUSH, all of the County aforesaid, for and in Consideration of the Sum of Two Hundred Dollars Current money, to us in hand Paid by Mordecai MILLER, of the Town of Alexandria & County aforesaid, the Receipt whereof , we do for ourselves our Heirs, etc, acknowledge & him the said Mordecai MILLER his heirs etc Thereof and therefrom forever Acquit, an also for & in Consideration of the particular Covenants herein after Expressed & by & on the part of him the said Mordecai MILLER to be done & performed, have bargained & Sold, and by these presents do for ourselves Our Heirs etc Bargain and Sell unto the Said Mordecai MILLER, a Certain negro man Slave Named Jack, which Said Slave Jack, Decended to us by the Last Will etc of John McINTOUSH, Late of this county, Dec'd. Nancy O'DANIEL was listed 22 times as a buyer at her husband's estate sale, only once as "Nancy DANIEL."

James SHIRLEY's Will is recorded in Jefferson County, West Virginia, Will Book 9, Page 409. In it he gives his wife Matilda one third of his estate "both real and personal," stipulating that after her death her Dower was then to be equally divided between his sons Robert, George William, and Thomas Lee. The remaining two thirds of his holdings were distributed to sons Robert, George and Thomas. At his death James SHIRLEY owned numerous tracts of land amounting to considerable acreage. A Plat of some of James' extensive holdings may be found in Will Book Book 24, Page 309, of Jefferson County. James gave his sons several slaves by name. All other slaves not named in the Will were to be equally divided among them (in an estate accounting all are named). James did will that "my yellow boy named James RUST shall be free at the age of twenty one years at which time my executor hereafter named shall out of my estate furnish him with two good suits of clothes of good quality, and twenty five dollars in cash." In the accounting of the estate the cost of Mr. Rust's two suits of clothing came to $57.54 (W.B. 10, p. 11). To his daughter, Mary HURST, he gave "two Negroes by name Jerry and Lucy," and $1,000.00 cash.

Hulda Elizabeth HILL, born 12 Sep 1832, daughter of William Castilo HILL and Mary DYKES, may be the "Hulda HILL 18" named in the 1850 household of Eliza C. DANIEL of Barbour County, Alabama. Notes on this HILL family indicate that Hulda married a REDDING, but no dates are given. This Hulda is the only Hulda HILL, age 18 that has been found in this general geographical location. It is interesting to note that Mary Dykes HILL died, probably before 1850, when her father remarried to UNKNOWN and had three addition children by his second wife.

Hulda Hill married James P. Redding on 4 february 1859 in Stewart County, Georgia. ["Georgia, County Marriages, 1785-1950,"]

Huntsville, Ala.: Strode Publishers, 1976; Roberts, Lucien E. "The Political Career of Joshua Hill, Georgia Unionist." Georgia Historical Quarterly 21 (March 1937): 50-72.
Huldah HILL's brother was the Hon. Joshua HILL, Jr., Esq. of Madison, Morgan County, GA and he married Emily REID of the REIDS of Morgan and Putnam County, GA. Congressman Joshua HILL, Jr. (1812-1891) of Madison, GA, brother of the Hulda HILL who married that John DANIEL, was an avid opponent of the South's entering the CW and was good friends with SHERMAN's step-brother, John, also then a congressman from Ohio, as I remember. HILL also did not serve in a CSA unit, either, deciding to stay at home in Madison throughout the war, although I know his son served and was killed at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, GA in 1864. (John R. Clarke, e-mail 10/12/2003)
The Georgia D.A.R. Bible records list some of the great-grandchildren of Senator Joshua Hill, Jr. as Grey OBEAR, b. 1906; Julia Hill OBEAR, b. 1909; and Legear OBEAR, b. 1913. Who their parents were is not obvious from the records.

It also provides links to memorials for his wife, Sophy Hughes Hill (1841 - 1874) and children, Mamie A. Hill (1866 - 1896) and Robbie Hughes Hill (1872 - 1906).
