"Likewise marriage merriment in the great house would have its echo in the quarters; and sometimes marriages among the slaves were grouped so as to give occasion for a general frolic. Thus Daniel R. Tucker in 1858 sent a general invitation over the countryside in central Georgia to a sextuple wedding among his slaves, with dinner and dancing to follow.[2] On the whole, the fiddle, the banjo and the bones were not seldom in requisition." Title: Lockerly House (Milledgeville, Ga.) Daniel R. Tucker House (Milledgeville, Ga.) Date: Date of original image: | Date of structure: 1839 Description: Located at: Irwinton Road, Milledgeville, Ga. Two-story stuccoed brick house with raised basement on a foundation of brick with a tin and copper roof, featuring a two-story portico with massive entablature supported by six fluted heroic Doric columns. A small balcony hangs over the doorway. The interior staircase has mahogany railings and balusters, and its risers are enameled to look like white veined marble. Doors are of solid walnut. Judge Daniel R. Tucker from South Carolina built the house around 1839. George Wiggin Hollinghead bought the house in 1886. The house was purchased in 1928 by Mr. and Mrs. Reginald W. Hatcher, who restored the house and named it Lockerly after their ancestral home in England. Edward J. Grassman planted extensive gardens which became the Lockerly Foundation Arboretum. Hails TAYLOR married Julia Bibb GOODWYN, his half second cousin, about 1866, determined from the age, 13, of their son William in the 1880 census. Julia was a daughter of Albert Gallatin GOODWYN and Harriet N. BIBB. Albert is Hails' half first cousin, once removed, and a great-grandson of Sarah DANIELL and Capt. James TAYLOR.
In the 1870 census, Hails' next door neighbors are his in-laws, Albert and Harriet GOODWYN. Curiously, Albert's daughter, Julia, Hails' wife, is not listed with Albert or with Hails. A blank line is below Hails' name. Hails and Julia's son, William (13 in the 1880 census), is also not named among the family.

Jesse GOODWYN and his mother Lucy are named in the 1775 Will of his father, John GOODWYN. He married Martha RAIFORD, daughter of Philip RAIFORD II and Martha WESTON. He and Martha had one child, Martha Epps GOODWYN.
From "Abstracts of the Wills of the State of South Carolina 1760-1784" by Caroline T. Moore, page 77-78: "Jesse GOODWYN of the Congerees in Craven County, planter. General Notes: Husband -
Malachi HOWELL's father Thomas, and his father's brother, Arthur, followed their brother, William, to the Adams Mill Pond area of what is now Richland County, South Carolina, arriving after 1741. The family came from Maryland, as shown by Thomas HOWELL's registration in THOMPSON's Regiment in 1775. According to the Reverend John Giessendanner's record, WILLIAM died on February 4, 1757. Based upon his will, which was recorded in Charleston, Arthur HOWELL died before William. In his Will of 13 Mar 1760, Thomas HOWELL named four sons and a daughter, all under age. His son, Malachi, baptized on February 22, 1753, was given a plantation 'up the path' from the home place. Malachi married Martha Epps GOODWYN circa 1773. Malachi and Martha had one child, Jesse Malachi HOWELL. After the death of her husband, Martha Epps GOODWYN married Wade HAMPTON. ("A History of Richland County \endash Volume I", Edwin L. Green)
"Baptism after 1750" by Rev. John Ulrich Giessendanner provides Malachi's christening as:
"Malachy Howell 22 Feb 1756" ( (in English) numbered as in Salley, http://www.xs4all.nl/~sail/orange/002bapt.html)
In a plat dated 28 Apr 1772, Malachi HOWELL received 300 acres located in Craven County on Cedar Creek off the Congaree River, six miles from Russell's Ferry, adjoining Francis GOODWYN and Jesse GOODWYN. (SC Archives: Series Number: S213184 Volume: 0017 Page: 00116 Item: 02 Date: 1772/04/28) Jesse GOODWYN was deceased. Jesse's daughter, Martha Epps GOODWYN, Malachi's future wife, became "the girl next door."
Malachi's memorial for the 300 acres was recorded on 29 Apr 1773. About this same time., Malachi married Martha Epps GOODWYN.
Jesse Malachi HOWELL, son of Malachi and Martha Epps, was born about 1775.
Malachi made a claim to the State of South Carolina on 26 May 1779 for horse impressed to service by the Continental forces.
Malachi HOWELL died 5 APR 1782 in Richland County before 5 APR 1782, the date that THOMAS HOWELL was named administrator of his estate. (Green's "History of Richland County", p. 215) Probate of the estate was recorded in Will Book "A" Pg. 46-47. On January 7 and 8, 1783 his property was sold by Wade HAMPTON in rights of his wife Martha Epps Goodwyn Howell HAMPTON.
SCMAR VOL II, Number 1, Winter 1974 - Early Wills of Camden District, Pages 46-47. (NOTE: A different Malachi HOWELL (circa 1772 - 1821) is named in the 1790 census for Richland County, South Carolina: "Malachi HOWELL, 1 1 1 - 23", living next to "Lucy HOWELL - - 2" on one side and "Widow of Thomas HOWELL, 1 - 1 33" on the other. (Series: M637 Roll: 11 Page: 140) This Malachi, married to Eliza D., is the son of Capt. William HOWELL, RS-SC, d. bef 26 Feb 1784, and wife, Lucy UNKNOWN, a HOWELL line not (yet) connected to descendants of William and Frances O'DANIEL of Stafford County, Virginia. This Malachi's brother, Thomas, died bef 18 Nov 1788. Malachi is shown living next to Mary (UNKNOWN) HOWELL, his widowed sister-in-law. This Malachi HOWELL's Will was signed 20 Nov 1821 and proven 15 December 1821. (Green's "History of Richland County", p. 273)

Martha's mother also died while Martha was still under age. Will Bk.
