Dumas Malone (1892-1986), an American author, was born at Coldwater, Mississippi , USA on January 10, 1892 . He received his bachelor's degree in 1910 from Emory College (Emory University ) and in 1916 he received his divinity degree from Yale University. Between 1917 and 1919 during the First World War he became a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps. He became best known for his multi-volume biography of Thomas Jefferson for which he earned the 1975 Pulitzer Prize. Malone Brothers Letters, Accession #2935-p, Special Collections Dept., University of Virginia Library, Charlottesville, Va.
Repository: Special Collections, University of Virginia Library
Accession number: 2935-p
Malone Brothers Letters 1917-1919
Physical Characteristics: This collection consists of 30 items.
"The majority of this correspondence, 1917-1919, is from Dumas, Kemp, and Miles S. Malone to their mother, Lilian (Kemp) Malone, and pertains to their military service during World War I. In addition to the sixteen letters to their mother, there are three to their father, John W. Malone, three amongst themselves, and one to Sarah Heath Malone. There are also four letters, 1926-1953, of Kemp Malone while a member of the faculty at Johns Hopkins University. This correspondence complements a group of letters found in accession #10481.
Letters from Dumas arrived from the Marine Barracks in such places as Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Paris Island, South Carolina, and Quantico, Virginia. During this first year, Dumas wrote of his transfer to Company 3 Signal Battalion and learning the "signaling game," his training schedules, seeing a dreadnought in the harbor, his belief that his sister, Lillian, should be sent to Randolph-Macon Woman's College, and his first drill with rifles. There were few letters written by him in 1918, but he did mention the worst of training being over, receiving his "greens," and being squad leader of some 50 men. Following a visit home, Dumas wrote an interesting letter on January 2, 1919, discussing the rest of his holiday in Lynchburg, Virginia and New York City. In Lynchburg, he visited Randolph-Macon, which he referred to as "a delightful place," and spent time with Dr. Webb and his family. The excitement over his trip to New York shows in his discussion of touring and talking with his brother Kemp and his friend Henry [Johnson] Toombs, who later became a renowned architect. He mentioned seeing the sites with "Henry pointing out a thousand small points of architectural beauty..." In the spring of that year, Dumas described a brief period of leave in Philadelphia and again wrote his belief of Randolph-Macon Woman's College being the best place for Lilian."

DUMAS MALONE: JEFFERSON BIOGRAPHER
by Madeline McMurdo Whitmore
Extracted from http://www.monticello-assoc.org/articles/malone.html:
"Dr. Dumas Malone is Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation Biographer- in-Residence and professor emeritus of history at the University of Virginia. He was born January 10, 1892, in Coldwater, Mississippi. Malone received his bachelor of arts degree from Emory College in 1910 and his bachelor of divinity from Yale University in 1916 where he also received his master of arts in 1921 and his doctorate in 1923. He was instructor in history at Yale from 1919 to 1923, associate professor of history at the University of Virginia from 1923 to 1926, and professor from 1926 to 1929. Dr. Malone was at one time visiting professor of history at Yale and was professor of history at Columbia for fourteen years. Since 1959 he has been back at the University of Virginia. He was professor there until his retirement in 1962; he now has an office in Alderman Library, University of Virginia, which he considers his professional home.
Dumas Malone was for seven years director of the Harvard University Press. He was a distinguished editor of The Dictionary of American Biography. He has also contributed to Harpers, Atlantic Monthly, Virginia Quarterly Review and American Scholar. In 1975 Dumas Malone, at the age of 83, won the Pulitzer Prize in history for his first five volumes of Jefferson and His Time. Mr. Malone, expressing his surprise when he learned of his award, said: "You know as a rule with these series books they won't give the Pulitzer to you until you've finished and I've still got one to go, so I didn't really expect it." Malone is presently working on the sixth and final book in the series which he says will concern Jefferson's life in retirement during which time he established the University of Virginia. "This last book will be much more of a biography," he said, "and not so much concerned with public affairs."
Mr. Malone, who prefers to call himself a historian, not a biographer, has spent almost thirty years of his professional life in Charlottesville with the University of Virginia. His desire to write a comprehensive life of Jefferson dates from his early years as a professor at the University, where they speak of the Father of the University as though he were in the next room. He explained that he got sidetracked along the way and published his first volume in 1948 while teaching at Columbia."

WILLIAM OWSLEY, Kentucky's sixteenth governor, was born in Virginia on March 24, 1782. In 1783, his family moved to Kentucky and settled in Lincoln County, where Owsley attended the common schools. Before he studied law, he held various jobs, working as a teacher, a deputy sheriff, and a surveyor. He entered politics in 1809, serving as a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives, a position he held until 1811, and in which he was reelected to in 1831. In 1812, he was appointed to the Court of Appeals, where he served as a justice until 1828. He also served as a member of the Kentucky State Senate from 1832 to 1834, and was secretary of state from 1834 to 1836. Owsley won the Whig gubernatorial nomination and was elected governor by a popular vote in 1844. During his tenure, funding was increased for public education, the state's deficit was reduced, and troops were raised for service in the Mexican War. Also, Robert J. Breckinridge was appointed the public school superintendent in 1847, and the controversial ouster of Secretary of State Ben Hardin was dealt with. After leaving office, Owsley returned to his farm near Danville, retiring from public service. Governor William Owsley passed away on December 9, 1862, and was buried at the Bellview Cemetery in Danville, Kentucky.
