General Notes: Husband - John HALBERT

"John HALBERT was born about 1790, in central Kentucky and died about 1845, St. Francis County, Arkansas. He married first Margaret NIXON, a sister of Henry's wife, on March 2, 1810 in Kentucky. By her he had four children: Albert, Emily, Mary and Henry. Emily married, 1834 Samuel VOIERS; Mary married Ruffin BRYANT; Nothing is known about Albert and Henry except that presumably they went to Arkansas with their father.
In the fall of 1812 he served under Captain Caleb HARDESTY, 2nd Rgt., Kentucky Mounted Militia, Colonel John THOMAS. He owned a farm on Quick's Run. At various times he served as Constable, Deputy Sheriff, and Assessor. His first wife having died, he married, January 6, 1823, Jane HEATH. By her he had three children: Elizabeth, George and Margaret. Elizabeth married, 1847 Israel THOMAS, Jr.; George married Mary A. REED; Margaret married Benjamin BRITTAIN. In 1839 John decided to join his brother, Henry, in St. Francis County, Arkansas. John took most of his children with him. He was killed accidentally about 1845, leaving a comfortable estate to his wife and family. His daughter, Emily VOIERS, died shortly after moving Arkansas with her husband, who returned to Lewis County. George HALBERT died about two years after his marriage. He left one son, William Henry HALBERT , 1855-1918. From him descended the most numerous group of HALBERTs, most of whom still reside in St. Francis County or vicinity." (W.C.H., Sr)

In 1810 he was on the Lewis County tax list with 350 acres on Salt Lick. He was a man of taste and education. Stephen HALBERT saw military service as a Private in Captain Aaron STRATTON's Company, Colonel John POGUE's Rgt., Kentucky Mounted Volunteer Militia, in the campaign of 1813, ending in the Battle of the Thames, Canada, 5 October, where the great Tecumseh was slain and the British and Indian power broken in the Northwest. Stephen was a farmer on Salt Lick Creek, Subsequently, and at his death on Cabin Creek. Also served as a Deputy Sheriff for two years. He was not successful as a farmer but managed to raise a notable family of five sons and three daughters. His wife was a beautiful woman and her life and character were as beautiful as her person. She exercised a strong influence on her children. Stephen and Mary had eight children: Isaac Newton, born February 14, 1814, Mary Caroline, born May 13, 1815, William Cottingham, born February 20, 1817, Harrison Osbourn, born about 1819, Henry, born about 1821, James S., born about 1823, Elizabeth, born about 1825, and Sidnie, born in January, 1829. Mary died 27 January 1829, under 32 years of age, apparently as a result of childbirth. On 12 September 1829, Stephen married Priscilla WATKINS, daughter of Joseph WATKINS. Stephen and Priscilla had two sons and two daughters. Sometime after Stephen HALBERT's death on 29 March 1849, his widow took her children to Illinois and settled on a tract of 160 acres granted Stephen for his military services. Joseph and Pamelia died unmarried. John and Hester survived their youth but nothing is known of their descendants. (W.C.H., Sr)

He studied Mining Engineering at the University of Kentucky, Class of 1913, and Architecture at Columbia University, Class of 1916. He practiced architecture at Vanceburg, than worked in architecture offices in Cincinnati until the United States entered the war against the Central Powers. He entered the Military service at Camp Taylor, Kentucky on 20 September 1917, assigned to the Infantry. On 16 October he was transferred to the Engineers, promoted to Corporal and Sergeant and on 30 January 1918 sent to Engineer Reserves Officer Training Camp, Camp Lee, Virginia. He was commissioned 2nd Lt. He delivered them at Angiers, France and was assigned to the 40th Engineers (Camouflage) with the 1st Army. After Armistice on 11 November, his regiment assembled at Dijon and prepared to go home. Wishing to see something of Europe, he asked for a transfer. He was assigned 1 January 1919, to the 314th Engineers, Kyllberg, Germany, later to the 302nd Engineers, Sable' France, the A.E.F. Art Training Center, Bellevue, and to G-5 (A.P.) G.H.Q., Paris. After seeing the Victory Parades in Paris and London he was returned to the United States and honorably discharged at Camp Taylor, 3 October 1919.
In November 1919 HALBERT moved to New York City where he worked in various architectural offices until 1925 when he opened his own architectural office in New Rochelle, New York, which he has operated since except for time out for military services.
He was the founder of the Westchester County Society of Architects, 1929, and held various offices including President (1938). In 1945, when the Society dissolved to affiliate with A.I.A. he joined the Westchester Chapter, American Institute of Architects. Elected President, 1951. He is a very active member, served as Director for a number of years and Chairman of many important committees, including Chapter representative of the National Preservation Committee. In this connection he has been able to forward to Historic American Buildings Survey, of the National Park Service, Washington, many valuable drawings, photographs and reports on local historic buildings. He has also published articles of historical interest in the Quarterly of the Westchester County Historical Society and other publications.
He has been a reserve officer since 1923 in the Corps of Engineers. He was ordered to active duty 1 May 1933, with the Civilian Conservation Corps and was in Camp in Montana, Utah, Mississippi, New York and New Jersey, generally as a commanding officer. On release, 15 November 1935, he returned to New Rochelle and reopened his office. On 18 May 1942, he was ordered to active duty and assigned to the New York Engineers District, stationed at Stewart Field, Newberg, New York. Appointed Operations Officer under the Area Engineer, he had charge of all field operations (including labor relations) in the construction of two auxiliary fields and other construction at West Point moving 9 million cubic yards of earth was part of the job. On arrival he was appointed Camouflage Officer for Basic Training Center No. 3, a position he held until relieved from duty in February 1946. He received letters of commendation from Major Generals John F. Curry and J. E. Chancy and Brig. General A. Hornsby which entitled him to the Army Commendation Ribbon with pendant. He was promoted to Major, 11 February 1946.
Returning to New Rochelle he reopened his architectural office. He has been married 3 times: (1) 1915, Mary Jane Cole, 1897-1917, no issue; (2) 1924, Rowena Anne McEWAN, divorced 1941, no issue; (3) Norma G. HALBERT, son, William Carter, Jr., born 1944.
The history of the descendants of Isaac HALBERT and their connections was started around the turn of the century by William Clarence HALBERT and was compiled from public and private records, where available, recollections of old timers and other sources. Destruction of family records and the death of persons who could have supplied accurate information long before the start of this inquiry left many gaps which are hard to fill. The original history was carried thru until about 1920 and formed the basis of this genealogy. About 1946 collection was resumed by a son, William Carter HALBERT, and only daughter, Frances Aileen, wife of James Dallas Atkinson, of Greenup, Kentucky, who were also developing the Atkinson Family genealogy. All sorts of public records were searched in Kentucky, Virginia, Maryland, etc., as well as those of historical and genealogical societies in Kentucky, Ohio, New York and elsewhere. Hundreds of letters were written to relatives in those states and in Arkansas, Texas, etc., and accurate information obtained on long missing branches of the family. After information was considered fairly complete genealogical charts were made up and lettered on convenient sized sheets by William Carter HALBERT who also wrote the accompanying genealogical history of the HALBERT's, Bate's, Betts, etc. this history was meant to cover such facts or accomplishments as can be found in the records."
The above Genealogical History can be found in the: Library of Congress, Miscellaneous HALBERT's and others Pre-Revolutionary Records, (Isaac HALBERT 1750-1825, and Descendants. CS71.H16 1955. Autobiography of Dr. William Oscar Shank
I was born on an Illinois farm near Clayton, Illinois, in the year 1868. I am the son of Daniel and Catherine Hazelton Merret Shank. I am th distant cousin of Ann Hazelton Judson, wife of the famous Adoniram Judson, former missionary to Burma.
When I was 16 years of age, my father gave me a beautiful colt, then a few years later he told me if I would sow a few acres in wheat I could have whatever I made. After thrashing the wheat, I sold it for $90; Then I went to town and bought a rubber tired buggy and a set of harness. I now had the nicest outfit in the community.
I could go with any girl friend I desired except one. Nancy Ardella Hamilton was a beautiful talented girl and I did not have the nerve to ask her for a date. Finally I decided to ask her even if she turned me down. When I drove up to her house she was sitting out on the front porch. I said, "Ardella, would you like to take a ride?" She looked at my beautiful outfit and said, "I would be delighted to."
We went together several years and were finally married on October 8, 1891. We stayed that night with my father. The next morning Father said, "Oscar I have two businesses; one the furniture and the undertaking; the other the fruit and nursery. How would you and your brother George like to buy out the nursery?" I went outside and said to George, "Father wants us to buy out the nursery." George said, "Oh let's buy it. But", he said, "I have not a dime to pay down." "Well," I said, "I have saved up $600.00 working for one dollar and a half a day. I will pay that down."
That fall George took a horse and rode north and I took another horse and rode south selling trees to farmers. Next spring, farmers came in their lumber wagons from every direction to get their trees. That spring we paid Father every dollar we owed him.
I was in business for seven years and put $1,000. in the bank every year besides supporting a wife and two children. I laid the foundation for a fortune. Brother George went on and made a fortune.
At that time I felt a calling to the ministry. But I said, "Oh, Lord, I cannot be a minister. I am 29 years of age, have no education and have my family and own my home and business. But I will do all I can to help out [the] little Baptist church here in town." But the call kept coming so I went into the house one day and said to my wife, "I do not know what I am going to do about the call into the ministry." "Well," my wife said, "I did not marry a minister, but a business man." "I know," I said.
Then I went up into my room and laid flat down on the floor and this is all I said," Please, Lord, help me not to make a fool of myself." Then I reached out and took God's hand as definitely as if I reached out and took your hand.
I went downstairs and said to my wife, "Well, it is all settled. I am going into the ministry." "All right," she said, "We will pack up and go to college."
We went to the La Grange Baptist College, La Grange, Mo. There I graduated as valedictorian of my class in 1904. After graduating, I said to my wife, "I would like to go to some Baptist Seminary." "All right," she said, "Where do you want to go?" I said, "To the Colgate Rochester Theological Seminary." I graduated there in 1907.
On graduation day the dean on [of] the Seminary said a few words to each member of the class. I was the last name and he said, "Now I have a surprise for you. Here is a man 38 years of age. He preached his way through the seminary, he has a family of five children, and took the full Greek and Hebrew course and made the grade of 93.7. I nearly fell off my chair I was so surprised.
But the sad part was: The faculty were all going off on a vacation and here I was in a large city, with a big expense. Every other member of the class had a call to a church except me.
So I went out into the back yard and knelt under an old apple tree and prayed for a long time. I finally said, "Now, Lord, after all these years getting an education if you cannot use me in the ministry just let me know and I will go back home and take up my business." The next morning the mail man handed me a letter from Winfield, Kansas, saying, "Last Sunday our church called you as our minister. Come when you can."
I said to my wife, "I am going to take this letter up to the Seminary and show Dr. A. H. Strong, the President." When he read the letter he said, "Well, well, Brother Shank, if there was ever a demonstration of the leadership of the Holy Spirit, this is one.. I congratulate you on getting a call to a large church."
I was pastor at Winfield for 6 years. Then I was called to the East Side Church, Portland, Oregon. I was pastor there for 4 years. After that I was called to Quincey, Illinois to try to unite two large churches into one. That call was for only one year.
Then in 1918, Dr. Shank went to France as director of Christian Education for the Y.M.C.A. Then he was commissioned as Chaplain during World War I. From October 28 to June 26, 1919, he served as Chaplain. Dr. Shank was Chaplain of the American Legion of Kansas from 1921-1922.
Dr. Shank Received the Doctor of Divinity from the La Grange Baptist College in 1907.
After returning from France, Dr. Shank was called to the Atchison Kansas church. He served that church for 8 years and took in 800 members. Then in 1928 he was called to the First Baptist Church, Kansas City, Kansas. He served that church just 8 years and took 800 members into the church. That was quite a coincidence. After retiring from the First Church, Dr. Shank served the Brenner Heights Church for ten years. He has been in the ministry for 50 years.
Dr. Shank is a life member emeritus of the Board of Directors of Central Baptist Seminary. He is the oldest member of the Board.
4 living children. Elva Mayme Carney of Portland, Oregon. Everett Russell Shank of Oakland, California. Edythe Ardella Logan of Beltsville, Maryland and Mildred Bernise Braly of Kansas City, Kansas. Another son, Harry William Shank died several years ago.
Dr. Shanks spends much time writing books, articles, sermons and poems. He wrote his first book entitled: HOW TO WIN THAT SWEETHEART AND HAVE A HAPPY HOME. It was published by the Seminary Press and met with a large sale. He has just finished writing a large number of poems and hope to have them published.
Dr. Shank lives at 1920 Sandusky, Kansas City, Kansas. His phone number is Fa. 1-7443.
If any of his friends wish to call him he would be happy to have them do so.
W. O. Shank

General Notes: Wife - Margaret TINNING

Henriett [sic] Tinning was born 3 September 1922 in San Francisco County, California. Her mother's maiden name was Erwin. ["California, Birth Index, 1905-1995," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VLDB-LGZ : accessed 29 Nov 2012), Henriett Tinning, 1922.]

Henrietta is age 7 in the 1930 census and 17 in the 1940 census. There is no daughter "Margaret" or "Peggy" listed in the Archibald Bruce Tinning family in these censuses.

Margaret "Peggy" Tinning was born 3 September 1922 per her headstone, as was Henrietta. Margaret and Henrietta appear to be the same daughter.

Announcement is made of the engagement of Lieutenant Harry L. Evans, Jr. of the United States Marine Corps Reserve, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry L. Evans, of San Rafael, Calif., and Miss Margaret Tinning, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Archibald Tinning, of Piedmont, Calif. Mrs Evans is the former Miss Margaret Minton, daughter of Mrs. George D. Cooper and the late Dr. Henry Collin Minton, of this city. Lieutenant Evans was graduated from Lawrenceville School in the class of '39, and Yale University, class of '43, where he was a member of the Scroll and Key Honorary Society. He is now stationed at Quantico, Va. The wedding will take place some time in May. [The Trenton Evening Times, Trenton, New Jersey, Sunday, April 4, 1943, Page 9]

Obituary: HAMILTON, Peggy Tinning - Longtime Marin County resident died peacefully after a short illness on February 16, 2005. Born September 3, 1922 in San Francisco, Peggy was the daughter of Henrietta Erwin Tinning and Archibald Bruce Tinning. She grew up in Martinez and moved to Piedmont where she attended Dominican Convent and Piedmont High School. She then attended the University of California, Berkeley, married her first husband Harry Llewellyn Evans, and had her first daughter, Margaret Evans. Following Harry's death in Okinawa, Peggy married Harry's lifelong friend, Noble Hamilton of San Francisco. They settled in Ross where they raised their four children: Margaret Evans, Noble Hamilton, Winnie Caulkins and Buffer Fennie. Noble and Peggy were married for 55 years and enjoyed traveling together, their summers at Fallen Leaf Lake, and their grandchildren. Peggy was an active volunteer with the American Red Cross, the Well Baby Clinic and Sunny Hills. She was an avid gardener and longtime member of the Marin Garden Club. She loved her grandchildren: Hank and Jamie Caulkins, Liz Evans, and Will and Paige Fennie. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service on Friday, February 25 at 3 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church in Ross. Donations may be made to Guide Dogs for the Blind, 350 Los Ranchitos Road, San Rafael, CA 94903 or Hospice of Marin, 17 East Sir Francis Drake Blvd., Larkspur, CA 94939.

"June 30, 1901 Atlanta Constitution
58. WILLIAMSON- In reply to inquiry of Shelman of two weeks ago, I beg to say that I have in my possession the diploma conferring the degree of bachelor of arts upon the said William W. WILLIAMSON. The degree is issued from the University of Georgia and is signed by Joseph MEIGS, president of the university, and is dated 1804. I cannot account for the diploma being in my possession, unless it be in the following manner: My father, Robert RAINES, of Thomas county, was the son of Lucian Hamilton RAINES, formerly of Hancock county, later of Thomas. My grandfather, Lucian RAINES, had a sister, Martha who married Dr. Thomas W. TERRELL, of Sparta, whose sister married the aforesaid William W. WILLIAMSON. This may explain the case, as the diploma was among the papers of my grandfather at his death. Elizabeth WILLIAMSON, one of the daughters of William W. WILLIAMSON, married Peterson THWEATT, father of Peterson THWEATT, late comptroller general of Georgia. My grandfather, Lucian RAINES, was also very closely related to the Thweatts, his mother, Sarah, wife of Captain Robert RAINES, of Hancock county, being the daughter of John HAMILTON, of Hancock county, whose wife was Tabitha THWEATT.
I am sorry I cannot throw any light upon Shelman's inquiry, but I trust what I have written will not be entirely uninteresting. I hold the precious document at the disposal of William WILLIAMSON's descendants, but would suggest that it be presented to the university, as this is its centennial year. I feel sure it will be gratefully received by the chancellor and students and would be a fitting gift at this season.
THOMAS HART RAINES, M.D.
59. RAINES- Some weeks ago A.C.T. wrote to know either my address or to beg me to insert the genealogy of my family. I take pleasure in giving both. My home is in Thomas county, Georgia, but my present address is Kirkwood, DeKalb county, Georgia. I shall be pleased to receive any communication A.C.T. would like to make.
My lineage is as follows:
Captain Robert RAINES, of the county of Hancock, was born July 11, 1766. He commanded company H, of the 1st Regt. of Georgia troops in the Revolutionary war. he also was a member of the house of representatives of Georgia in 1810 and 1811. He died July 31st, 1816. He married Sarah Thweatt HAMILTON, daughter of John HAMILTON, Esq., of Hancock county.
Lucian Hamilton RAINES, eldest son of the above, was born November 29th, 1801. He married Ann Emily BLACKSHEAR, daughter of Edward BLACKSHEAR, Esq., of Pulaski county, later of Thomas.
Robert RAINES, eldest son of the above, was born August 31st, 1835. He married Mary Judson HART, daughter of John Stanford HART, Esq., of Leon county, Florida. He died Sept. 22d, 1891.
Thomas Hart RAINES, M.D., only child of the above.
Should A.C.T. care for more minute details of generation I shall be pleased to furnish these also. My connection with the Floods [sic] is from the marriage of Colonel Everard HAMILTON, brother of my great-grandmother to Mary Haggard FLOYD, daughter of General John FLOYD.
