General Notes: Wife -

Maude OAKMAN married Lewis Rush FREE, widwer of her older sister Ann Eliza OAKMAN, about 1902. If Maude and Lewis had children, they were born and died before the 1910 census when only Maude's step-children are listed in the census.

Censuses from 1870 to 1910 are consistant that Maude was born about 1877, but her grave provides that she was born 14 April 1866. In 1870 Barnwell County, South Carolina., Maude is not listed in the household of her parents, Rutherford and Elizabeth "Isabelle" OAKMAN. Her sister Ann Eliza "Analiza" is. "May B. W F 3 Dau" is in the household of Isabelle OAKMAN, widow of Rutherford, in 1880 Orangeburg County, South Carolina. "OAKMAN May B. Sister W F Aug 1887 22" born about 1878, but only 12 per the given year is in 1900 Barnwell County. "Maud Wife F W 35 (born abt 1875) is in 1910 Barnwell County. "Maude E. Wife F W 53" is in the 1920 Barnwell, suddenly ten years older than previous censuses and compatible with her grave stone.

The index of Blackville City Cemetery, Barnwell County, South Carolina lists:
"Free, Maude Oakman 4-14-1866 3-25-1945 Wife of Lewis Rush Free"

General Notes: Husband -

"... Wm. C. TALBOTT, was twice married; the first time to Miss Zerelda BAXTER, a highly worthy and handsome daughter of Milo BAXTER, a highly respected farmer of Madison County, Ky. She survived but a sort time after her marriage without leaving children. Subsequently he married Miss Annie FRENCH, the only child and daughter of Dr. Robert FRENCH, an eminent physician and farmer, of Madison County, Ky. Mrs. Annie French TALBOTT is a splendid woman and wife in every respect, intelligent, domestic and affectionate, and fulfills all the duties of a wife, mother, neighbor, friend to the poor and humble, black and white; her kindness of heart is well known and highly appreciated. They have an only child, a beautiful, bright, intelligent and affectionate daughter, Miss Clyde TALBOTT, now about seven years old, of sweet disposition and temper, and, young as she is, kind, tender in her feelings, and considerate of the feelings and wants of others, and with her playmates sharing her little gifts freely and equally with all. Her father and mother are very proud and fond of her, and watch her growth and intellectual training with vigilant, watchful care and love. Her father, Wm. C. TALBOTT, was during the late war sent by his grandfather, Col CAPERTON, to the United States Naval Academy, then at Annapolis, Md. Subsequently the school was removed to Newport, R.I., where he remained several years and became a midshipman, and had several cruises in the Mediterranean in the United States naval training ships, and on board United States revenue vessels. He finally resigned his position in the United States naval service, came home, and engaged in other business pursuits, all of which were honorably, faithfully and intelligently performed. His mother died when he was a child, and his grandfather, Col. CAPERTON, brought him home with him to Richmond, Ky., from Lexington, Ky., and reared and educated him and made him one of the family. the full equal of and the same in all respects as his other children. He is very affectionate and kind and devoted to his wife and child; no want or desire of either is ever uncared for. He is a kind neighbor and true friend, and of the highest order of intelligence and very popular, and greatly liked by all who know him. His latchstring is always out, and his hospitality well known and greatly appreciated. His house is a welcome home, always open to his friends, and none, whether known or not, no matter how poor, humble or destitute, are ever turned away, but are well entertained, and willingly so, too. When his grandfather, Col. CAPERTON, died, his uncle, Col. J. W. CAPERTON took charge of and raised him and finished his education, and he made that his home until his first marriage. He now resides with his wife and child on a farm, a beautiful home near the Red House Depot, on the Kentucky Central Railroad, in Madison County, Ky." General Notes: Wife -

Nadine Martha Sherrod, daughter of Lester Sherrod and Marie Daniell, was born 11 August 1929 in Thomasville, Georgia. "The 'M' in my mother's name stands for 'Martha'. We were lead to understand that her name was originally 'Martha Nadine Sherrod' but she changed it later to 'Nadine Martha'. [Lynn Mallion, 4.21.2001]

Nadine's family moved from Georgia to Orange County, Florida between 1940 and 1945. She married Joseph Frongetta about 1950. He was was much older than Nadine. They removed to New York and divorced soon after. There were no children from this marriage. [Avelina Blanco Sherrod Crenshaw]

Nadine Martha Sherrod married second Robert George Mallion in September 1955 in Erie County, New York, where they made their home. Nadine and Robert had no biological children, but loved as their own two adopted daughters, Arlene Cecelia and Lynn Marie.

Nadine died when her adopted daughters were in elementary school.

A Mother's Day tribute to Nadine, May 8, 2011, from her daughter, Lynn Marie Tulumello:
I've walked many of the places that you had walked,
on the same steps, along the driveway and in the yard when I was child.
In the streets, the bars, and the stores when I was a girl.
I walked along these places alone because you were gone so soon.
I would have never known you had I not walked the places you had been.
And for all those years I never knew you were always with me.
You were always guiding me, always best at being my guardian angel.
Even though you were always there, I was always looking for my mother.
My journey is the story of Siddhartha, though that is not my name.
I searched my whole life for my missing mother.
My journey even led me to a woman I was meant to have never known.
I had knowledge of mother from the other side, as I too became a mother.
But the long journey finally led me to you, right to your door.
When I arrived, I realized that you were always with me, Mom.
And that, I found out, was indeed the meaning of "Mother."

"MALLION - Nadine M. (Sherrod) of Orchard Park, N. Y., Dec. 20, 1970, beloved wife of Robert G. Mallion; dearest mother of Arlene and Lynn Mallion; daughter of Lester Sherrod and the late Marie; sister of Leon, Doyle Sherrod and Mrs. Raymond (Betty Jean) Ballard. Services from the Colonial Memorial Chapels Inc., 3003 South Park Ave., Lackawanna, Wednesday morning at 9 and from Our Lady of Sacred Heart Church on Abbott Rd. at 9:30. Mrs. Mallion was a member of Rosary and Altar Society. Burial in Holy Cross Cemetery. Friends invited. Visiting hours 3-10 p.m." [Courier Express]

General Notes: Husband -

William IRWIN fought in the Indian wars and was an Alabama state senator.
Since at least 1733, the site along the Chattahoochee River that is now Eufaula was occupied by three Creek Indian tribes of the Muskogee Nation. One of these was the Eufaulas (pronounced "u-fall-uhs"). General William Irwin, a hero in the War of 1814, was granted several thousand acres of land in nearby Henry County. One of the most prosperous men in the area, Irwin served as its first state senator. He used his considerable influence to promote development in the area and established the first steamboat wharf along Eufaula's high river bluffs. This set the stage for the town's rise to prominence as a center of trade. The town was renamed "Irwinton" in his honor. Source: <http://www.eufaulapilgrimage.com/eufaula.html>)
