Ann, apparently also called "Nancy", is named as Nancy STANHOPE, a daughter of James HURST in the 1849 settlement of the estate of her Uncle William HURST. There are two daughters of James HURST who are named in this settlement with last name of STANHOPE. The second is "Mildred" STANHOPE. "Mildred" and Amelia are thought to be the same person because "Nancy" is a nickname for Ann.

General Notes: Husband -
Timothy George HERLIHY was an immigrant to the United States from Ireland. Conflicting census data shows him arriving as early as 1840 (1900 census) or possibly about 1853, with his wife, Catherine, 27, and an infant daughter, Honora, less than two years of age, born in Ireland (1860 census). The family disembarked and made their home in New Orleans, Louisiana. Soon after arriving in the United States, Catherine gave birth to their second daughter, Mary Margaret, on 11 March 1853. (Another possible interpretation of this information may be that Timothy returned to Ireland before 1853, married there, and returned to Louisiana before 1855. An 1850 census listing for Timothy G. HERLIHY has not been located.
The family of Timothy HERLIHY is named in the 1860 census of Algiers, Orleans Parish, Louisiana. Timothy is 30, a Ship Wright, born in Ireland, with $900 of real estate and a personal estate of another $300. His wife, Catherine is 27, also born in Ireland. Hannah (Honora is now 7. Three more children have been added to the family: Mary, 5; James, 2; and John, 1, all born in Louisiana. (M653 Roll: 415 Page: 1039) Some of these ages are possibly +/-2 years, as is the case with the know date of Mary's birth. Also in this census, a Margaret HERLIHY, 22, born in Ireland, is also living in Algiers. (M653 Roll: 415 Page: 1030) She is a servant to Thomas HASSAM, 42, a wealthy Master Ship Wright who also has Thomas REESE, 48, a well-to-do Master Ship Joiner in the household. 76 Families separate them, but considering the common occupation, ship wrights, Timothy and the two Thomases are surely acquainted. Considering plausibility, Margaret, 8 years younger than Timothy, may be his sister or other relation. No other HERLIHY names are indexed in Louisiana in 1860 in census information at Heritage Quest. Note: The name HERLIHY is found in numerous phonetic spellings, e.g., HURLEY, HERLIHEY, HERLIN, EARLY, etc., and may be the reason why.
Timothy's wife, Catherine (FITZGERALD), died 5 February 1869, not long after giving birth to her eighth child, William J. HERLIHY. Timothy was then a widower with eight children ranging in age from a few months to 16 years of age.
About five months after Catherine's death, Timothy and Bridget Anna HACKETT applied for a marriage license. W. S. SULLIVAN signed as security. They married on 26 July 1869 in the St. Louis Cathedral, New Orleans, Louisiana.
In 1870 Timothy HERLIHY is listed in the New Orleans City Directory: "Herlihy, Timothy, carpenter, r. es. Elmira, bet. Peter and Alix, Algiers." Listed above Timothy's name is "HERLEY, John, glasswasher, Sumter Saloon, r. Port cor Morales, 3d Dist." Whether this John is a HERLIHY or related to Timothy is not known.
The census of 1870 indicates that Timothy HERLIHY is 41 and now plies his wood working trade as a "house carpenter". His holdings are valued at $3000 and a personal worth of $300. His wife is "Anna", 30, born in Ireland. The oldest daughter, Honora, is not with the family. Mary is named as "Margaret", (She is "Mary Margaret", a grand Irish name), and is 15. James is 13. John now 11. Timothy, 9, Dennis, 4, and William J., 2 have been born to the family, all by his first wife, Catherine. Alice was born after the 1870 census date.
Records show that Timothy and Bridget had five children. Timothy's great-granddaughter, Agnes Anna Swanson BERNARD, recalled only two children, Alice, born 1870, and Emma, whose name has not otherwise been found. It is possible that Agnes may have remembered "Ellen" as "Emma", or that Emma may have been a daughter born about 1875 who died as an infant, born in the gap between Ellen (1873) and Frank (1878, as given in the Bible of Elisha and Alice Herlihy HAAS). (This Emma may also have been the daughter, born 1887, of John J. Herlihy.) More information will be needed to determine what is right here.
(Personal note: Received my 2004 Christmas present from my ancestors this morning. Tripped over Timothy HERLIHY's family in the 1880 census for New Orleans. There are no HERLIHY names in that census there. Enjoying the thrilling hunt, I intentionally misspelled it Hurlihy. Had about 14 hits, but no Timothy. A Bridget HURLEY was among those listed. Bridget was his second wife, m. in 1869. Went to take a look, just for the fun of it. Her husband was Thomas HURLEY, b. Ire, and her oldest child was Alice, 10 LA. Their other dau was Ellen. I believe this is Timothy. Alice was b. July 1870 after the 70 census. Birth confirmed. Parents confirmed. Tim and Tom were both carpenters. Ellen was the name of the second daughter in the recollections of my Aunt Agnes who knew them. Timothy's age is a lingering question. 40 in 1870, he is shown as 41 in 1880. Other docs show he was born 1833-1839. A Bible entry by his daughter Alice shows him born in 1830. I am reasonably certain this is he. The three sons by Bridget, 2-9, listed here are previously unknown to me. RLD) The 1880 census lists Timothy as "Thomas HURLEY", not Timothy HERLIHY. (HURLEY is a soundex code for HERLIHY.) However, this family in New Orleans appears to be Timothy, not Thomas, with his second wife, Bridget Anna HACKETT and daughter Alice Norton, b. 10 July 1870. The second daughter, Ellen, is also one of the two daughters named by Agnes Swanson BERNARD from Timothy's second marriage. The family lives at 257 Locust(?) Street. Tim's occupation, carpenter, is consistent with other censuses, as is his birth in Ireland. Did the census taker hear "Tom" instead of "Tim"? Curiously, none of Timothy's children by Catherine are named in this household. 1891 N. O. city directory: Herliny (s/b Herlihy), Timothy G. -- carpenter; res. 337 Terpsichore.
In 1900, Timothy G. HERLIHY, 66, has moved to Mississippi and is living in the household of William A. DILL and his wife, Susan, in Hancock County, Mississippi. He is listed as a carpenter. Although Timothy is not living with his family members, the families of two of his sons, Timothy H. and John, live in Hancock County in the Jordan River District, and his daughter Alice HAAS and family lives there. No doubt he moved there to be near family.
Immigration information in the 1900 census also raises questions about Timothy. He is listed as immigrating in 1840 and having been in the country for 60 years, becoming a naturalized citizen in Louisiana, as extracted: "Ire Scotland Ire 1840 60 La". When immigrating from Ireland, did he accompany his parents to the United States?
Timothy G. HERLIHY died in Fenton, Mississippi on April 21, 1901. He is buried in Bayou Coco Cemetery, Kiln, Mississippi, "a few steps to the right of the SWANSON family plot." (Patrick Swanson BERNARD). The tombstone reads in three lines: "Timothy G. Herlihy / Born July 15, 1839 / Died April 21, 1901." This date of birth is questionable. Perhaps the 1839 was an 1830 as indicated by information below. Consistent census data shows him to be seven to ten years older than that given on the stone. He was said to born in 1830 in a short biography of Elisha N. HAAS, business partner and brother-in-law of Timothy H. HERLIHY, handwritten on stationery from the Louisian Hotel at Lafayette & Main Streets, Baton Rouge, LA, by Elisha Nicholas HAAS' daughter, Mrs. Amelda Winona Haas SCHROTH, Amelda included the following comment "Additional info re: individuals mentioned: ... T. H. HERLIHY (1861-1916) was named Timothy Hypolite HERLIHY and was known as Hypolite or Polite. (He was the son of Timothy George HERLIHY (1830-1901) of New Orleans, and his first wife, Catherine.)"
"Alice Herlihy HAAS wrote in her Bible that he (Timothy George HERLIHY) was "found dead in the bed April 21 Sunday 1901 age 70 years, 8 months, 5 days." That would make his birth date 8/16/1830. I found an LDS IGI record for a Roman Catholic christening for Timothy HURLEY on 8/18/1830 in Killarney, Kerry Co., Ireland: father: John HURLEY; mother: Catherine CONWAY; but I don't know if this is the same Timothy HERLIHY, but I do know that Timothy George HERLIHY was Roman Catholic." [Maureen Adams]
Timothy is buried in Grave 268, Bayou Coco Cemetery, Kiln, Hancock County, Mississippi.

General Notes: Husband -
Llewellin THREEWITS was a son of Captain Joel THREEWITS, who died during the Revolution. Llewellin had himself been a soldier of the Revolution, attaining the rank of Lieutenant. He served under Capt. William GOODWYN at McCord's Ferry in 1781, later under Major Robert LYELL at Orangeburgh in 1781, and as adjutant to Col. Thomas TAYLOR in 1782.
Ninety-Six District: North Side of the Saluda River PLAT BOOK B 1785-1787 This volume contains Plats for Land Along the French Broad and Alabama or Mobile Rivers and their Tributaries, which, since 1787, has not been within the boundaries of South Carolina.
County Records Division, South Carolina Department of Archives and History, page 401, THREEWITS, Llewellin.
Llewellin and his brother, John, were representatives of Saxe-Gotha to the South Carolina Constitutional convention. Both voted against ratifying the new Constitution as recorded in this vote: FRIDAY, May 23, 1788. On motion, Resolved, That this Convention do assent to and ratify the Constitution agreed to on the 17th day of September last, by the Convention of the United States of America, held at Philadelphia. On the question being put to agree to the same, the yeas and nays were called for by the unanimous voice of the Convention, and are as follows: -- District of Saxe-Gotha. -- Yea: Hon. Henry PENDLETON. 1. -- Nays: Hon. Richard HOMPTON, J. CULPEPER, William FITZPATRICK, Llewellen THREEWITS, John THREEWITS, Wade HAMPTON. 6. Two hundred and twenty-two representatives attended the session, with 140 voting in favor and 73 voting against. The resolution was adopted by a majority of 67 votes.
In the 1790 census of North Orangeburg, South Carolina, Llewellin THREEWITS' household is shown as 4 1 3 - 17, meaning 4 male 16 or over, 1 male under 16, 3 females, and 17 slaves. Llewellin was married to Eleanor FITZPATRICK at this time. They had a son, Llewellin Williamson, born in 1789. That accounts for some of his household, but who were the other 3 males, 16 or over, and the other 2 females? (M637, R11, P383)
After his death about 1796 his widow, Mrs. Eleanor THREEWITS, married Capt. John THOMAS in 1800.
Note regarding Emily GEIGER and a purported marriage to a THREEWITS: "Descendants of both Geigers and Threewits have been arguing about "who Emily married" for well over a century! Some branches believe that she'd married Llewellin Threewits, although she certainly did not. He was married to Ann Mary Geiger as of 1786, had his only child by second wife Eleanor Fitzpatrick in 1789. No time to work in another wedding in that same year." (Harriet Imrey, email, 12/07/2004)

Eleanor FITZPATRICK "was the widow of Llewellin THREEWITS, son of Capt. Joel THREEWITS, who died during the Revolution, and brother of Major John THREEWITS, captain in the Revolution, major of militia and for many years senator from the election district of Saxe Gotha, later Lexington. He had himself been a soldier of the Revolution, attaining the rank of Lieutenant and acting as regimental adjutant for two regiments on different tours of duty. After his death about 1796 his widow, Mrs. Eleanor THREEWITS, married Capt. John Thomas in 1800." A. S. Salley, Jr.

John THOMAS, Jr. was said to have died "under age." It is possible he had died prior to this transaction, this land being a part of his inheritence from his father, being conveyed to his sister Sarah's husband by John THREEWITS, husband of his sister, Mary.
