These paragraphs are from The Community Of Erwinton, By Carrie Lee Erwin Kalber, from ALLENDALE ON THE SAVANNAH, by Alexania Easterling Lawton and Minnie Reeves Wilson -
"Any study of South Carolina history should include the community of Erwinton, which has produced many outstanding people: lawyers, doctors, publishers, statesmen, farmers, textile ex-preacher, and many others interested in the welfare of Allendale On The Savannah our country. Among the families who have lived there are MANERs, ERWINs, ROBERTs, DUNCANs, WILLINGHAMs, SAMs, BESTs, BOXes, KILLINGSWORTHs, BRUNSONs, and MARTINs...Although most of these families have left this part of Old Barnwell District (now Allendale County), their children and grandchildren love to return and wander around visiting the sights that were dear to their ancestors...Reverend J. J. Trott, an evangelist of Christian Churches, who lived in Georgia, wrote a news dispatch to The Christian Review, Franklin College, Tenn., dated March 10, 1847, describing his visit to Antioch Christian Church in Erwinton, S. C., and the ERWINs there. Trott wrote "Erwinton, S. C., is a most delightful place. It is not a city nor a town, but something more interesting, a Christian neighborhood, composed of a post office, a male and female academy, a neat and comfortable meeting house, and a congregation of Disciples. Bro. Dr. W. R. ERWIN is a pioneer in the good cause. His brother, Gen. James Daniel ERWIN, was baptized last year at Bethany College, Va. Brother J. S. HAVENER is teacher in the Academy and congregation. Miss BOIDLEY, a Catholic lady, gives lessons in French, Music, Drawing, and Painting....Erwinton also had at that time a Masonic Hall which was the first chartered Masonic Society in South Carolina, and I have been told that the Allendale Masonic Lodge has the Charter. The home of Brother Dr. W. R. ERWIN mentioned by Reverend J. J. TROTT is one of the few remaining ante-bellum homes to be seen today in the neighborhood of Erwinton just off Highway 301 on the old Augusta road. Dr. William Robinson ERWIN and his wife, Julia Caroline Robert ERWIN, built the remaining home after his brick home was destroyed by fire...
Rev. Alexander CAMPBELL had preached at Antioch Christian Church, in present-day Allendale County, in 1838, and had been the guest of Gen. James Daniel ERWIN at Erwinton at that same time."
The historical marker erected by the state of South Carolina at the site of Antioch Christian Church reads:
"ANTIOCH CHRISTIAN CHURCH Organized in 1833 by Dr. and Mrs. W. R. Erwin was the second Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) founded in South Carolina. Dr. J. D. Erwin, II, served as minister for forty years. The present building was used as a court house in 1865."
General Notes: Wife -
Julia Caroline ROBERT is a daughter of William Henry ROBERT and Mary MANOR. She is also a descendant of the first Huguenot minister in the Santee section of South Carolina and Landgrave SMITH through her grandmother Elizabeth DIXON.
Julia Caroline married Dr. William Robinson ERWIN on 4 April 1829. She and William had 11 children. William died in 1856, leaving Julia a widow with the youngest child then barely one year old.

Trenton relatives of Lieutenant Harry L. Evans, Jr. USMC, of San Rafael, Calif., learned yesterday that he was killed in action on Okinawa May 18 while fighting with the Sixth Marine Division. Lieutenant Evans was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry L. Evans of San Rafael and husband of the former Margaret Tinning. He also is survived by a one year old child. His mother was the former Margaret Minton, daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Henry Colllin Minton Sr. Dr. Minton was pastor of First Presbyterian Church from 1902 to 1919. Lieutenant Evans, a nephew of Counselor Henry Collin Minton Jr. of this city, was graduated from Lawrenceville School in 1939 and Yale University in February, 1942. He entered the marine corps shortly after graduation from Yale. [The Trenton Evening Times, Trenton, New Jersey, Sunday, May 27, 1945, Page 1]
Lieutenant Evans is buried in the Honolulu Memorial Cemetery, Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii. A picture of his headstone is on Find A Grave Memorial# 56129812:

General Notes: Wife -
Henriett [sic] Tinning was born 3 September 1922 in San Francisco County, California. Her mother's maiden name was Erwin. ["California, Birth Index, 1905-1995," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VLDB-LGZ : accessed 29 Nov 2012), Henriett Tinning, 1922.]
Henrietta is age 7 in the 1930 census and 17 in the 1940 census. There is no daughter "Margaret" or "Peggy" listed in the Archibald Bruce Tinning family in these censuses.
Margaret "Peggy" Tinning was born 3 September 1922 per her headstone, as was Henrietta. Margaret and Henrietta appear to be the same daughter.
Announcement is made of the engagement of Lieutenant Harry L. Evans, Jr. of the United States Marine Corps Reserve, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry L. Evans, of San Rafael, Calif., and Miss Margaret Tinning, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Archibald Tinning, of Piedmont, Calif. Mrs Evans is the former Miss Margaret Minton, daughter of Mrs. George D. Cooper and the late Dr. Henry Collin Minton, of this city. Lieutenant Evans was graduated from Lawrenceville School in the class of '39, and Yale University, class of '43, where he was a member of the Scroll and Key Honorary Society. He is now stationed at Quantico, Va. The wedding will take place some time in May. [The Trenton Evening Times, Trenton, New Jersey, Sunday, April 4, 1943, Page 9]
Mrs. George D. Cooper and her daughter, Mrs. Nicholas G. K. Boyd, of San Rafael, are here for a week or two for a visit with Mrs. Boyd's son Nicholas G. K. Boyd, Jr., who is in the navy. They are also accompanied by Mrs. Cooper's other daughter, Mrs. Harry L. Evans, and her daughter, Gertrude, also of San Rafael, who will remain for some time. [The San Diego Union, San Diego, California, Wednesday, July 28, 1943, Page: 8]
Lt. Harry L. Evans, Jr. was killed in action on the island of Okinawa on May 18, 1945, survived by Margaret and their daughter.
"Mrs. Noble Hamilton" is named as a surviving daughter in the December 1965 obituary of her father, Archibald Bruce Tinning.
Obituary: HAMILTON, Peggy Tinning - Longtime Marin County resident died peacefully after a short illness on February 16, 2005. Born September 3, 1922 in San Francisco, Peggy was the daughter of Henrietta Erwin Tinning and Archibald Bruce Tinning. She then attended the University of California, Berkeley, married her first husband Harry Llewellyn Evans, and had her first daughter, Margaret Evans. Following Harry's death in Okinawa, Peggy married Harry's lifelong friend, Noble Hamilton of San Francisco. They settled in Ross where they raised their four children: Margaret Evans, Noble Hamilton, Winnie Caulkins and Buffer Fennie. Noble and Peggy were married for 55 years and enjoyed traveling together, their summers at Fallen Leaf Lake, and their grandchildren. Peggy was an active volunteer with the American Red Cross, the Well Baby Clinic and Sunny Hills. She was an avid gardener and longtime member of the Marin Garden Club. She loved her grandchildren: Hank and Jamie Caulkins, Liz Evans, and Will and Paige Fennie. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service on Friday, February 25 at 3 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church in Ross. Catherine Emma PERRYMAN was a daughter of Alexander Doniphan PERRYMAN and Martha A. MARSH. Catherine and Emma are named as separate children by some researchers; however, the census ages of the girls in various censuses, never in the same household or same census, the 1850 entry as "Catherine E." and her being named Catherine WOOLDRIDGE (sic) 1910 and as Emma WOOLRIDGE in 1920, as a sister of Viola in both, are proof they are the same person.

"DR. PAUL FITZSIMONS EVE: Born at "Forest Hall", Augusta, Georgia on 27 June 1806; he died at Nashville, Tennessee in November 1877. Dr. Paul FitzSimons Eve was the fourteenth of the fifteen children of Captain Oswell Eve and Aphra Ann Pritchard, and a first cousin of Dr. Joseph Adams Eve, professor of obstetrics in the Georgia Medical College, Augusta. Industrious and a natural leader, Paul FitzSimons Eve was graduated at Franklin college (University of Georgia) in 1826, and from the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania in 1828. He was in Europe from 1828 to 1831, and besides hospital practice in Paris and London served as ambulance surgeon in the French revolution of 1830, and as regimental surgeon in the insurrectionary war in Poland the same year. Through the intercession of the Marquis de Lafayette, among others, he was accepted. He received the highest award allowed to be bestowed by the Polish government. He was elected professor of surgery in the Medical College of Georgia at its organization in 1832, in Augusta, and served until 1849. He succeeded Professor S. D. Gross to the chair of surgery at the University of Louisville in 1849, and in 1850 became Professor of Surgery in the newly established University of Nashville. He removed to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1868, to accept the Chair of Surgery in the University of Missouri, but was obliged to resign for climatic causes. He filled the Chair of Operative and Clinical Surgery at the University of Nashville until 1877, when he became Professor of Surgery in the Nashville Medical College. He was made Surgeon-General of the Confederate Army in 1861, and served on the medical examination board and with the Army in the battles of Shiloh and Columbus, and at Atlanta and Augusta. His reputation as a surgeon was world-wide, and he introduced methods never before known to surgical science in America. He was President of the American Medical Association in 1857 and of the Tennessee State Medical Society in 1870. He edited the Southern Medical and Surgical Journal and the Nashville Medical and Surgical Journal. Among his six hundred articles published in book form, pamphlets or in medical journals, are: Remarkable Cases in Surgery (1857); One Hundred Cases of Lithotomy in the Transactions of the American Medical Association for 1870; What the South and West have done for American Surgery; and reports of twenty amputations and thirteen resections at the hip-joint performed by Confederate surgeons, contributed to the Medical History of the War. He died in Nashville, Tennessee on 3 November 1877, and was interred in The Cottage Cemetery next to his first wife, Louisa Twiggs. His second wife, Sarah Ann Duncan, subsequently had their remains removed to Augusta's city cemetery, along with their monuments in Cottage Cemetery, which were then re-erected over their graves adjacent to her own. [Part of the above is taken from a biographical extract from The Twentieth Century Biographical Dictionary of Notable Americans: Volume IV .]
Dr. Paul F. Eve (1806-1877), was born in Augusta, Georgia and was trained in the Medical School of Pennsylvania in 1828, and then trained to be a surgeon in London and Paris. In 1832, he was elected Professor of Surgery in the Medical College of Georgia, newly organized in Augusta, and taught there for 17 years. In 1851, Eve became Professor of Surgery at the University of Nashville.
"Eve was appointed Surgeon General of a provisional Army of Tennessee. He worked in Nashville hospitals, treating casualties, until Forts Henry and Donelson fell in February of 1862. He fled Nashville on 16 February taking his surgical instruments with him. Six days later he was Commander and Surgeon of the Gate-City Hospital in Atlanta. This hospital was located in a second-rate hotel of 32 rooms and was constantly overcrowded with patients. In spite of difficult conditions, Eve was able to treat and return to duty a high percentage of casualties."
