General Notes: Husband - Samuel Farrow RICE

From a short biobraphy of Samuel Farrow RICE on page 470 of Alabama, her history, resources, war record, and public men : from 1540 to 1872 by Willis Brewer: "...Samuel Farrow RICE, now a resident of this county [Montgomery County, Alabama]. He is the son of Judge Wm. RICE, who was a State senator in South Carolina. His mother was a sister of Z. P. [Zachariah Pines] HERNDON, a noted South Carolina lawyer, another of whose sisters married Hon. Samuel FARROW of that State." It also provides Samuel's schooling and a brief history of his associations as a lawyer in Alabama. Among his partnerships was one with Philip E. PEARSON in Talladega, Alabama. "Judge RICE married a daughter [Amanda] of Major P. E. PEARSON, at one time of Talladega."

"From The Montgomery Advertiser, 4 January 1890: The news of the death of Judge Samuel F. RICE will be received with sorrow all over Alabama. He has been identified with the State ever since his early manhood, and with this city nearly 40 years. Judge Samuel F. Rice died at his residence on Madison Avenue at 8 o'clock last night, in the 74th year of his age. His death was caused by heart disease, and after the attack he gradually grew worse until his big heart forever ceased its beating. Last spring Judge RICE had a severe stroke of paralysis. He leaves a wife and three children. The children are a widowed daughter, Mrs. Daisy GLAZE, a young son, Samuel, 11 years of age, and a little daughter, Marguerite Wiley, aged 3 years. No man in Alabama was better known through out the limits of the State than Samuel Farrow RICE . He was a son of Judge William RICE , who was a State Senator in South Carolina. His mother was a sister of Z. P. HERNDON, a noted South Carolina lawyer, another of whose sisters married Samuel FARROW, of that State. The subject of this sketch was born in Union District, South Carolina, June 2, 1816, and was graduated at the South Carolina College. He opened an office in Winnsboro, but in 1838 came to this State and settled in Talladega. He at once purchased a newspaper and edited it six years. In 1840 and again in 1841, he represented Talladega County in the Legislature In 1852 he settled in Montgomery as the associate of Colonel James E. BELSER. In December 1854, he was elected to the Supreme Court bench. He resigned that position in 1859, and represented Montgomery County in the Legislature that year. From 1861 to 1865 he represented Montgomery and Autauga Counties in the State Senate." General Notes: Husband - James Talbot DANIELL, USAAC, WWII

James Talbot DANIELL was born on 7 Jun 1920 near Pavo, Georgia on the farm where his parents, James Ulmer and Jewel Singletary DANIELL, and grandparents, Charles Henry and Mary Melvina Baker DANIELL, lived. He was called "Talbot" by the family and was known as "Big Bud" or "Bud" to his stepmother, Carmen SWANSON, and half brothers, Robert Louis and Walter Earl DANIELL.

Talbot accompanied his parents and younger brother Walter Fritz DANIELL to Miami after the family farm was sold in 1923.
Talbot and his brother Fritz returned to Pavo to live on Granddaddy Daniell's farm for several years after their mother left their father. While there, Talbot's brother, Fritz, contracted colitis (some say pleurisy) and died there at his grandfather's farm on May 6, 1936.
Family recollections say that Talbot was talking to his grandfather Charles Henry DANIEL on the front porch of the Pavo homestead when Charles Henry suffered a heart attack and died on August 10, 1936. They had been discussing airplanes when Talbot was asked to bring in some firewood. When he returned to the front porch, Charles Henry had died sitting in his rocking chair.

Bettye Jane was age 17, not 21, as indicated. Both she and James resided in Miami, Dade County. The marriage was in Collier County which bordered Dade to the west. It may be that they eloped to another county and Bettye misstated her age to facilitate the marriage. Five days later, 10 October 1941, James Talbot joined the Army Air Corps. World War II was brewing.

On 10 October 1941, Talbot joined the Army Air Corps. He became a bombardier/gunner in B-26 Martin Marauder medium bombers with the 8th Air Force during World War II. According to stories, he was in North Afica, Sicily, and Italy. It was said that he was shot down on three occasions, all behind German lines, but always made it back to Allied lines. In one story, Bud and another crewman flipped a coin to see who would fly a particular mission as bombardier or turret gunner. Bud flew as bombardier. The aircraft returned from the mission with the gun turret blown away by a flak burst. Another story had him flying as bombardier/nose gunner when an altitude fused flak shell tore through the nose bubble just in front of him, ripping the nose bubble off the aircraft. In his picture, Bud wears Staff Sergeant chevrons and his hat shows the famous "50 mission crush" favored by Army aviators. His decorations include Aircrew Member wings, the Air Medal with Oak Leaf clusters, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the American Defense Service Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.

General Notes: Husband - Matthew HOWELL

Matthew is named as a son in the Will of his father, Arthur HOWELL in 1752.
He was named an administrator of the estate of Jose DANIELL in 1799, and replaced in December 1801, after having died, apparently intestate.
A note in Will Book D abstracted in Green's "History of Richland County", page 245 states: "Note: According to the papers of Matthew HOWELL, No. 374, he died in 1801. Isaac ROY married a dau. Polly (See NOTE below. RLD); Samuel OLIVER married another dau (Data from Wills of Samuel and Mary Ann Howell OLIVER prove that Samuel married Mary Ann "Polly" HOWELL. RLD). There were a third daughter and three other children."
Margaret HOWELL was made administrix of Matthew HOWELL's estate on 22 February 1802.
"I have copies of several Howell estate settlements of Richland Co., S.C. from 1790's up to 1816. Matthew HOWELL, d. before 1806, leaving an estate which was administered by his widow, Margaret. This estate was sued by Isaac ROY for his share by right of his marriage to a dau of Arthur HOWELL. The estate proceeds were divided between widow Margaret and dau Polly OLIVER, son Matthew, son Arthur, son Thomas, and dau Margaret TYSON. Distribution of the estate was: Mrs Margaret Howell $610.71; Samuel Oliver in right of his wife $203.57; Isaac Roy in right of his wife $203.57; 3 unnamed children each $203.57. $610.71" (Howells of Richland Co., S.C. Posted by: Benny R. Gordon, </cgi-genforum/email.cgi?587209865>, July 25, 2000)
(NOTE: Isaac ROY married a dau of Arthur HOWELL, brother of Matthew. This statement indicates that none of Matthew HOWELL's daughters married ROY. RLD)

Columbus Pilot Flies His Golden Mission
15th AAF IN ITALY
Technical Sergeant William H. Daniell, 23, of 2406 Marion St., Columbus, Ga., has successfully completed hie fiftieth combat mission. Radio operator on a 15th Air Force Flying Fortress, he flew his "golden" mission November 19, when the Forts bombed the oil storage dumps of Vienna, Austria.
A graduate of Columbus High school, Sergeant Daniell was formerly employed by the post engineers at Fort Benning, Ga. He enlisted in the Army September 22, 1942 and attended the radio school at Sioux Falls, S. D., and the aerial gunnery school at Yuma, Ariz., where he received his wings.
Upon leaving the United States for combat duty overseas, he was assigned to the oldest heavy bombardment group in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations. this group, bombing enemy installations in almost every Axis-dominated country in Europe from bases in England, North Africa, Russia and Italy, has flown over 350 combat missions. Sgt. Daniels [sic] first mission was thwe attack on the Ploesti oil refineries in Romania, on July 9.
Questioned as to his "roughest" mission Sergeant Daniel [sic] said "Over the Florsdorf oil refinery in Vienna, Austria, on October 13, the flak was intense. A few seconds after "Bombs away" I heard a crashing sound. A piece of 'flak' about two inches long had come up through the camera hatch, hit the nozzle on the fire extinguisher, glanced upward to tear a hole right through the radio and finally came to rest down by my right foot."
Sergeant Daniell has been awarded the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters and has earned the European-African-Middle East Theater Ribbon with two battle participation stars. He also wears the ribbon of the Presidential Citation, which has been awarded to his unit.

Hattemer and Thompson Are Given Commissions As Ensigns
Two young Montgomerians, Henry L. Hattemer and Frederick Arthur Thompson Wednesday will be enlisted as "ensign" in the reserve flying corps of the United States Navy. Mr. Hattemer applied for enlistment in the navy several days ago, and when he informed Lieutenant Smith that he had been awarded a pilot's license by the Aero Club of America, Lieutenant Smith advised him to wait for a few days and he would see if he could not have him enlist as an ensign... The navy department Tuesday morning authorized the commissions to be issued to the two Montgomerians and they probably will leave for the training station at Pensacola Wednesday night.[The Montgomery Advertiser, Montgomery, Alabama, Wednesday, April 25, 1917, Page 7]
