General Notes: Husband -

In the "History of Richland County", Edwin L. Green provides "HOWELL, WILLIAM. One hundred sixty-one days of militia duty as footman and horseman, 1780-1782, under Colonel TAYLOR. Supplied large amount of provisions. He signed the claim, April 7, 1784, which was collected for his estate (Captain William HOWELL) by his executor, Thomas HOWELL, in July of the same year."
The above presents a problem with the information below showing that his property was appraised on 26 Feb 1784, usually after dieing. As such, it is more likely that his son William, also an executor of his father's will, may have signed the April 7, 1784 revolutionary war claim collected in July 1884 by another executor, son Thomas HOWELL.
An abstract under Wills in Camden Relating to Richland County, South Carolina: "Pages 68, 69. HOWELL, William. Will, June 20, 1776-n. d. (property appraised, February 26, 1784). Wit.: Jno. BOYD, Henry SMITH, James LEVISON. Ex.: Grace RUSSELL, John TAYLOR, James TAYLOR, Malachi HOWELL, Thomas TAYLOR, Nathan CENTER, sons, Thomas and William. Wife: Lucy. Dau.: Grace (received Mill Pond tract bought from Nathan CENTER and Goose Pond tract bought from John HOWELL). Sons: Thomas (eldest. Received tract known as Howell's Ferry, where his mother lived), William, Malachi, James, Robert (born after will was signed, see codicil.)" 133,1252

Ex.: John TAYLOR, Malachi HOWELL, Joseph B. STAUNTON. Son: Malachi (d. before November 20, 1821). Dau.: Grace BAKER. Granddau.: Lucy STAUNTON (daughter of Joseph B. 1 F Maryline A CASADY

         Born: Jul 1896 - Missouri
   Christened:
         Died:
       Buried:

General Notes: Husband -

The parents of Nelson CASSADY are not known. He is three months old in the 1860 census, born about February 1860, living in the home of Margaret CASSADY, widow of Morton CASSADY who died 12 May 1858, too early to be the father of Nelson, conceived in 1859. Nelson is age 10 in the 1870 census still in the home of Margaret CASSADY.

SPECULATION: Nelson CASSADY was raised in the home of the widow, Margaret CASSADY. She may have taken him in if his parents or mother had perished soon after his birth, or he may have been Margaret's son by an as yet unknown father. There is always the possibility he may have been the son of one of Margaret's daughters. Although it may be wrong, to keep Nelson "in the family" he is carried by this compiler as a son of Margaret CASSADY and Unknown.

Nelson CASSADY married Eva "Evie" E. HALL on 22 January 1880. Evie was a daughter of Martin Luther HALL and Margaret HARRIS.
1880 U.S. Census, Ohio, Washington County, Lawrence; Series: T9 Roll: 1075 Page: 179: 203 204 CASSADY Nelson W M 20 M Laborer OH ?? ??; -- Evie W F 18 Wife M Keeping house OH ?? ??; -- Charles E. W M 1/12 May Son S OH ?? ??.

Eva Hall CASSADY died on April 28, 1886 and is buried in the Newport Cemetery near her Hall family in Washington County, Ohio. After Evie's death, Nelson moved west. What happened to his son, Charles E., is not known.

In 1900, Nelson is a gold miner in Black Hawk, Colorado. He has remarried to Lulla (or Luella) and has a young daughter. Nelson's son, Charles E., who should be 20, is not living with him. Nelson and Lulla married about 1894 when Nelson was 34 and Luella 17. They probably wed in Missouri, where Maryline was born. Nelson age in the 1900 census is off by three years (aided by the difference his and Lulla's ages?), but his birth month in Ohio, as is where his parents were born, is correct.

From a short biobraphy of Samuel Farrow RICE on page 470 of Alabama, her history, resources, war record, and public men : from 1540 to 1872 by Willis Brewer: "...Samuel Farrow RICE, now a resident of this county [Montgomery County, Alabama]. He is the son of Judge Wm. RICE, who was a State senator in South Carolina. His mother was a sister of Z. P. [Zachariah Pines] HERNDON, a noted South Carolina lawyer, another of whose sisters married Hon. Samuel FARROW of that State." It also provides Samuel's schooling and a brief history of his associations as a lawyer in Alabama. Among his partnerships was one with Philip E. PEARSON in Talladega, Alabama. "Judge RICE married a daughter [Amanda] of Major P. E. PEARSON, at one time of Talladega."

"From The Montgomery Advertiser, 4 January 1890: The news of the death of Judge Samuel F. RICE will be received with sorrow all over Alabama. He has been identified with the State ever since his early manhood, and with this city nearly 40 years. Judge Samuel F. Rice died at his residence on Madison Avenue at 8 o'clock last night, in the 74th year of his age. His death was caused by heart disease, and after the attack he gradually grew worse until his big heart forever ceased its beating. Last spring Judge RICE had a severe stroke of paralysis. He leaves a wife and three children. The children are a widowed daughter, Mrs. Daisy GLAZE, a young son, Samuel, 11 years of age, and a little daughter, Marguerite Wiley, aged 3 years. No man in Alabama was better known through out the limits of the State than Samuel Farrow RICE . He was a son of Judge William RICE , who was a State Senator in South Carolina. His mother was a sister of Z. P. HERNDON, a noted South Carolina lawyer, another of whose sisters married Samuel FARROW, of that State. The subject of this sketch was born in Union District, South Carolina, June 2, 1816, and was graduated at the South Carolina College. He opened an office in Winnsboro, but in 1838 came to this State and settled in Talladega. He at once purchased a newspaper and edited it six years. In 1840 and again in 1841, he represented Talladega County in the Legislature In 1852 he settled in Montgomery as the associate of Colonel James E. BELSER. In December 1854, he was elected to the Supreme Court bench. He resigned that position in 1859, and represented Montgomery County in the Legislature that year. From 1861 to 1865 he represented Montgomery and Autauga Counties in the State Senate." NOTE: W. R.'s wife Elizabeth, presumed deceased before 1870, has been replaced by Manda, but when? Considering the age progression of children, Elizabeth may have died after the birth of Wyley, when a 3 to four year window opened before the birth of Lula, age 2 months in the 1870 census and most likely then the child of Manda. Pending further discovery, W.R.'s children born before 1870 are assigned to him and Elizabeth. RLD)

These are POSSIBLY Jessie Mae's parents in 1900. William and Sallie C. are the only two match points. The "B." in William's name may or may not be right. Hard to tell if it is a distinct B or a combination with the numerical over writing. BEALL and BELL appear interchangeable in this family's records.
