Thomas-Pulaski-Laurens County GaArchives Biographies.....Mitchell, Robert G. 1843 - living in 1913. File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Joy Fisher sdgenweb@yahoo.com October 19, 2004.
From: A HISTORY OF SAVANNAH AND SOUTH GEORGIA VOLUME II, William Harden, The Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago and New York, 1913 p. 825-828:
JUDGE ROBERT G. MITCHELL. A man of the true and noble character for which the sons of the Southland are noted, Robert Goodwin Mitchell has played his part bravely and well in all the activities of his life. He has served his state in times of war, suffering severe wounds in the service of the cause of the Confederacy, and has served it no less efficiently in times of peace, as a legislator, and also as an industrious private citizen and a Christian gentleman. A native of the community in which he has passed the greater part of his long and honored life. Judge Mitchell was born on a plantation in Thomas county, Georgia, July 15, 1843. His father, the Hon. Richard Mitchell, was born near Petersburg, Virginia, in 1797, the son of Col. Thomas Mitchell. Col. Thomas Mitchell was a native of the Old Dominion state, and commanded a troop of cavalry in the War of the Revolution. After the colonies had been freed from the yoke of tyranny, Colonel Mitchell moved from Virginia, and settled in Montgomery county, Georgia, where he resided for some years. He finally left his home in that locality, however, and became one of the pioneer settlers of southern Georgia, establishing himself in Thomas county, on a tract of wooded laud about nine miles southwest of Thomasville. There he built a log house, one of the early type, with a puncheon floor. He was the owner of a number of slaves, and set them to work to clear his land, and put it under cultivation. Colonel Mitchell is said to have been the first to grow sugar cane for market. He made what was called "sugar mush" of the cane, and hauled it in this form to the port of St. Marks, about sixty-five miles distant, for shipment to New York. This proved a profitable venture, and he continued to grow cane on his plantation until his death. He was buried on the plantation where he had lived, in the family burying ground, where his wife also sleeps. The father of the subject of this history was a mere boy when his parents moved to Georgia. Having received a good education as a foundation for success, he started out as a young man in the mercantile business at old Hartford, Pulaski county, Georgia. After a time, however, he gave up this enterprise, and moved to Thomas county, where he bought land near his father's estate, and engaged in the pursuit of agriculture. He remained on this land where he had a number of slaves at work for him, until his death, which occurred on the twelfth of February, 1856. A member of the old Whigs, Richard Mitchell always took an active interest in public affairs. His devotion to his party and to the best interests of his community were rewarded in the 30's, by his election to the state legislature, a representative from Pulaski county. Richard Mitchell was united in marriage to Sophronia Dickey, who was born near Sumpter, South Carolina, in the year 1808, and died many years after her husband, on the 17th of May, 1893, at the advanced age of eighty-five years. Sophronia Dickey Mitchell was the mother of nine children. One of these, a daughter, and the second child, died in infancy, but the rest lived to the age of maturity. Their names are as follows: Henry, Frances Nelson, Richard Baines, William Dickey, Sarah Ann, Robert Goodwin, Harriet E., and Amy Susan. After some preliminary work in the neighborhood schools, Robert Goodwin Mitchell attended Fletcher Institute, at Thomasville, and later he was a student in the preparatory department of Mercer University for one term. When but eighteen years old, he volunteered for the Confederate service at Thomasville, and was mustered in Savannah in July, 1861, as color bearer, in Company E of the Twenty-ninth Regiment. Soon after this he was appointed sergeant and at the re-organization in 1862, was made second lieutenant of his company. The Twenty-ninth was held on the coast, serving about Atlanta, and between that city and Charleston, until May, 1863, when it was sent to Mississippi as part of the command of Gen. W. H. T. Walker, for the re-enforcement of Gen. Joseph E. Johnston. There Lieutenant Mitchell participated in the fighting about Jackson, and the march toward Vicksburg, and when Gen. C. C, Wilson, of the Twenty-first Regiment, was put in command of the brigade, including the Twenty-ninth, he was appointed to his staff as aide-de-camp. In this capacity he participated in the gallant and important service of Walker's division at the battle of Chickamauga, and during one siege of Chattanooga, and the battle of Missionary Ridge. General Wilson dying about this time at Ringgold, Gen. C. H. Stevens assumed the command of the brigade with his own staff, and Lieutenant Mitchell returned to his regiment, and was at once appointed adjutant, in which capacity he performed his duty brilliantly throughout the Dalton and Atlanta campaigns. He was in battle about Dalton, at Resaca, Cassville, New Hope Church, Kenesaw Mountain, Peachtree Creek, and was in the battle at Atlanta in which General Walker was killed, on July 22, 1864, and after serving in the entrenchments under fire following this last-named engagement, was severely wounded on the line southwest of the city, August 9, 1864. His wound entirely incapacitated him for duty during the remainder of the war, and after remaining under treatment at Macon for some time, he returned home. He was forced, however, to use crutches for six months after peace had been declared. The Twenty-ninth Regiment was commanded by Judge Mitchell's brother, Col. William Dickey Mitchell, who was severely wounded at Chickamauga. Having recovered from this wound, Colonel Mitchell joined Hood's command, and went on the Tennessee campaign, taking part in the battles of Murfreesboro, Franklin, and Nashville. He was captured in the battle of Nashville, and taken to Johnson's Island, Lake Erie, where he was detained as a prisoner of war until the contest was ended. Upon his return home he engaged in the practice of law at Thomasville, in which place he made his home, living in the honor and esteem of the entire community, and receiving many honors, among them the offices of county judge, in which capacity he was serving at the time of his death, which occurred in 1892. It was while Robert G. Mitchell was disabled from the wound he received in the war that he began the study of law, a profession in which he was destined to attain many honors. After his admission to the bar, he formed a partnership with his brother William. In 1873 he was appointed solicitor general of the southern circuit of Georgia, a position which he held for about twelve years. At the end of this time he resigned, and in 1884 was elected to the state senate, serving in the session of 1884-5. In the year 1890, he was again chosen to receive the honor of the state senatorship, and represented his district in the legislature of that year, serving in that session and that of the following year as president of the senate. Upon the consummation of his term as senator, Judge Mitchell resumed the practice of his profession, and held no public office until 1903, when he was elected judge of the superior court of the southern circuit of Georgia, to succeed Judge Hansell. He resigned from this office in 1910, having been one of the best judges the state of Georgia has ever known. Since his retirement from the judgeship, Judge Mitchell has been engaged in the peaceful pursuit of agriculture. He has a farm of about two thousand acres, situated from six to eight miles south of Thomasville. He resides in Thomasville on the outskirts of the city, in the home he has occupied since 1865. His house is a commodious frame structure, built in colonial style, with large pillars supporting the porch. It is situated about one hundred feet back from the street, in a lawn well-shaded by large oak and magnolia trees, and with an avenue of stately pecan trees leading to the door. On the 21st of January, 1864, Robert G. Mitchell was married to Amaretta Fondren, who was born in Dublin, Laurens county, Georgia, the daughter of John G. and Nancy Thompson Fondren, both natives of Laurens county. For many years Mr. Fondren was in the mercantile business in Dublin, afterward coming to Thomas county, where he bought a large tract of land, on which he employed as many as two hundred slaves. He spent the last days of his life in Thomasville, where he died before the war. Judge and Mrs. Mitchell have been blessed with nine children, who have reached maturity, and two others, Rufus L. and Harriet E., who died in childhood, aged fourteen and five years respectively. The children who have survived are as follows: Minnie Lee, Frances, Annette, Robert Goodwin, John Fondren, Emmett, Carl, Julian Raines, and Richard. Of these, Minnie Lee married Dr. W. W. Bruce, of Thomasville, and has one child, Helen; Annette is the wife of Theodosius Winn, a resident of Thomasville, and has three children, Davies, Nettie, and Sarah; Robert G., who is now an attorney of Blackshear, Georgia, is married to Mary 0. Acosta, and has eight children, Blanche Acosta, Catherine, Robert Goodwin, Emily, Eustace, Mary Lillian, Nettie Fondren, and John Gorden; John F., married Anne Montgomery; Emmett married Augusta Bowen Lathrop, and has three children, Lathrop, Emmett, and Fondren. Carl is cashier of a bank at Lyons, Georgia, and Julian R. is a resident of Kansas City, Missouri. The judge's daughters received their education in the Thomasville schools, graduating from the Young Female College. John F. took a law course at Athens, Georgia, and served three terms in the Georgia legislature and lacked but two votes of being elected speaker. Mrs. Mitchell and the judge are both members of the Missionary Baptist church, and have reared their sons and daughters in the same faith. Besides his many interests in public and private life, Judge Mitchell has found time to affiliate with the Masonic fraternity, belonging to the Thomasville lodge of that organization. He is also a member of the W. D. Mitchell Camp of Confederate Veterans. The following, which appeared in a paper in the locality in which Judge Mitchell makes his home, is a true testimonial of the esteem and honor in which he is so deservedly held: "Throughout all his career, civil and military, he has been loyal to his country, his party, and generous and public spirited. * * * He did heroic service in redeeming Georgia from the second invasion, known as the 'reconstruction,' and he is one of the old guard, never departing from the faith, always holding to the time-honored principles of his party, warning against strange doctrines and new departures." To the Honorable William L Harris Judge 6 Judicial District of said state (HARRIS, William L.)
Filing Date 1857-September-23
Abstract:Burr A. Harrison, executor of the will of the late George H. Foote, states that he sold a slave named London to Augustus Roby in 1856. Harrison claims that Roby agreed to pay him $950 for the slave over a period of months; Roby died before he was able to complete the agreed upon payment schedule. Citing that Jane C. Roby purchased London from Augustus's estate, the petitioner claims that his deal with the late Augustus should be treated as a mortgage and that he therefore should be awarded relief from Jane C. Roby. Harrison asks that London be sold so that he might receive the proceeds as payment of the mortgage.

General Notes: Wife - Elizabeth Hill ROBERDEAU

Elizabeth Hill ROBERDEAU married Stephen Daniel FOOTE. She was called "Bettie."

SPECULATION: Elizabeth Hill ROBERDEAU's parents are James M. ROBERDEAU and Martha Lane TRIPLETT of Fairfax County, Virginia. He and his first wife, Mildred DENNY are buried in the Roberdeau Family Cemetery, 13910 Braddock Rd., Centreville, Fairfax County, Virginia, located on the former site of "Royal Oaks," built c. 1770-1790 by NEWTON KEENE, SR. The unmarked graves of JAMES M. ROBERDEAU (1785-1832), his wife MILDRED DENNY ROBERDEAU, and three unidentified persons have been located about 30' northwest of the old foundation. Martha Triplett ROBERDEAU is buried in the Fairfax County Courthouse Cemetery. (http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/library/branches/vr/cem/cem293.htm)

1830 U.S. Census, Virginia, Fairfax County, No Twp; Series: M19 Roll: 201 Page: 257: ROBERDEAU James M. 1M 40-50; 2F under 5, 3F 5-10, 1F 20-30. This confirms two daughters under 5, Martha A. was born about 1826 and a place for Elizaberth Hill about 1828.

James Daniel ROBERDEAU, son of James and Martha, born about 1830 in Fairfax County, Virginia, is in Colorado County, Texas in 1860. Elizabeth Hill ROBERDEAU, born about 1828 in Fairfax County, Virginia and her husband, Stephen Daniel FOOTE are also in Colorado County, Texas in 1860, having migrated from Fairfax County, Virginia about 1858. Three of James and Martha's children migrated from Fairfax County, Virginia. Elizabeth would be one of those three, although her name is not among those found as James and Martha's children; however a complete listing of the four surviving children has not been located. Records and writings combined, only three of the four mentioned have been identified: Harriet ROBERDEAU, born about 1823; Martha A. ROBERDEAU, born about 1826; and James Daniel ROBERDEAU born about 1830, again, leaving room for Elizabeth, born about 1828.

Elizabeth H., 32, born in Virginia, is listed as the wife of S. D. FOOTE in the 1860 census of Colorado County, Texas. In 1870 the family is in Brazos County, Texas and she is shown as Eliza, 41, wife of Stephen FOOTE. She has had nine children, eight of whom are at home. Julia, the eldest, is no longer with them and likely married.

Stephen died in 1871. "Bettie H." and children reside in Wharton County, Texas in 1880.
1880 U.S. Census, Texas, Wharton County; Pct 1; Series: T9 Roll: 1332 Page: 390: Bettie H. In 1900, Bettie H. FOOTE is listed as Mother-in-law, living with her daughter Cora, 35, and her husband, Henry NEWMAN, and their six children in Weatherford, Texas. [Series: T623 Roll: 1664 Page: 43]

General Notes: Husband - Thomas Hinman MOORER, Admiral, USN

The following biographical sketch was compiled at the time of Admiral Thomas H. Moorer's induction into the Alabama Academy of Honor in 1969.
"Admiral Moorer was born in Mount Willing, Alabama, on February 9, 1912, son of the late Dr. R. R. Moorer and the late Mrs. Hulda Hill Hinson Moorer. After graduating from Cloverdale High School in Montgomery, he entered the U. S. Naval Academy with the Class of 1927.
As a midshipman, he played football for three years, and was commissioned an ensign in 1933. Following completion of flight training in July, 1936, he was designated a naval aviator. Admiral Moorer served in the South Pacific during the early part of World War II, where he was awarded the Silver Star, Purple Heart and Distinguished Flying Cross as a result of combat action with a Navy fighter squadron. During the Second World War, he also served as commander of a bombing squadron operating in Cuba and Africa, and served as gunnery and tactical officer on the staff of Commander Air Force, Atlantic.
Admiral Moorer rose quickly to prominence in naval circles after the war, as he served in a number of important assignments with the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations and other posts. He was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1957, and later commanded the Seventh Fleet. In 1964 he became Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet, and one year later was named commander of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet and NATO's Allied Command, Atlantic. In this latter capacity, he directed military operations during the Dominican Republic Crisis of 1965-66, and won his second Distinguished Service Medal for his outstanding performance of duties.
On June 3, 1967, Admiral Moorer was named by the President as Chief of Naval Operations. Admiral Moorer holds a number of decorations, including the American Defense Medal with star; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two stars; European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal; National Defense Service Medal with bronze star; Vietnam Service Medal; and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with device. In May 1964 he was awarded the Stephen Decatur Award for Operational Competence by the Navy League of the United States. Admiral Moorer has been a frequent visitor to his native state throughout his life and still maintains his official residence at 402 Barbour Street, Eufaula, Alabama. He was awarded the Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree by Auburn University on June 3, 1968."
Admiral Moorer is married to the former Carrie Ellen Foy of Eufaula. They have four children, Thomas Randolph, Mary Ellen, Richard Foy, and Robert Hill Moorer.
This expanded biography of ADMIRAL THOMAS H. MOORER, USN (Ret.) was taken from the list of past speakers at the Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz Memorial Lectureship in National Security Affairs. Admiral MOORER spoke there on these dates and subjects: Tuesday, March 13, 1990 "Reflections on Vietnam" and Thursday, March 15, 1990 "Panama - What Really Happened".
"Thomas Hinman Moorer was born in Mount Willing, Alabama, February 9, 1912, son of the late Dr. R. R. Moorer and the late Mrs. (Hulda Hill Hinson) Moorer. He graduated from Cloverdale High School in Montgomery, Alabama, Valedictorian of the Class of 1927, and on June 10, 1929, entered the U. S. Naval Academy. As a midshipman he played football for three years. He graduated and was commissioned an ensign on June 1, 1933, and through subsequent promotions attained the rank of rear admiral on August 1, 1958; vice admiral, on October 5, 1962 and admiral, on June 26, 1964.
After graduation in June 1933, he served six months on board the USS SALT LAKE CITY as a junior officer in the gunnery department. He assisted in fitting out the USS NEW ORLEANS at the Navy Yard, New York, and served in the cruiser's gunnery and engineering departments from her commissioning on February 15, 1934, until he detached in June 1935. During the next year, he was a student at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida. After completing the flight training in July 1936, he was designated a Naval Aviator.
In August 1936 he was assigned to Fighting Squadron ONE- B, based briefly on the USS LANGLEY and later on the USS LEXINGTON. He was transferred in July 1937 to Fighting Squadron SIX, based on the USS ENTERPRISE, and continued duty with that squadron until August 1939. He then joined Patrol Squadron TWENTY-TWO, a unit of Fleet Air Wing TWO, and later Fleet Air Wing TEN, and was with that Squadron at Pearl Harbor, Territory of Hawaii, when the Japanese attacked the Fleet there on December 7, 1941. His squadron was sent to the Southwest Pacific and during the Dutch East Indies Campaign, he was shot down in a PBY on February 19, 1942, north of Darwin, Australia. He was rescued by a ship which was sunk by enemy action the same day. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received February 19, 1942, and the Silver Star Medal for "extremely gallant and intrepid conduct as pilot of a Patrol Plane during and following an attack by enemy Japanese aircraft in the vicinity of Cape Diemen, February 19, 1942... "
After his return to the United States in July 1942, he had temporary duty from August of that year to March of the next in the United Kingdom, as a mining observer for the Commander in Chief, U. S. Fleet. He then fitted out and assumed command of Bombing Squardron ONE HUNDRED THIRTY-TWO, operating in Cuba and Africa from its base at Key West, Florida, Boca Chica Air Base. Detached from that command, he served as gunnery and tactical officer on the staff of Commander Air Force, Atlantic, from March 1944 to July 1945.
He was awarded the Legion of Merit: "For meritorious conduct ... as Force Gunnery and Tactical Officer on the Staff of Commander Air Force, Atlantic Fleet..."
From August 1945 until May 1946, he was assigned to the Strategic Bombing Survey-Japan of the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, engaged in the interrogation of Japanese officials. For two years thereafter, he served as executive officer of the Naval Aviation Ordnance Test Station, Chincoteague, Virginia. He next had duty afloat as operations officer of the USS MIDWAY (July 1948-July 1950).
Reporting in August 1950 to Inyokern, California, he served for a year as experimental officer of the Naval Ordnance Test Station. During the year following, he was a student at the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island, and in August 1953, again reported for duty on the staff of Commander Air Force, Atlantic Fleet. In May 1955 he was ordered to the Navy Department to serve as aide to the Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Air) and in July 1956 was detached to sea duty as commanding officer aboard USS SALISBURY SOUND (AV-13).
On July 26, 1957 his selection for the rank of Rear Admiral was approved by the President and in October of the same year, he reported as Special Assistant, Strategic Plans Division, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, Navy Department. From January 1, 1958 until July 1959, he was Assistant Chief of Naval Operations (War Gaming Matters), after which he commanded Carrier Division SIX. He returned to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations in November 1960 and served as Director of the Long Range Objectives Group until October 1962 when he assumed command of the SEVENTH Fleet. For his service in this assignment he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal. In June 1964 he became Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet. Admiral Moorer assumed command of NATO's Allied Command, Atlantic, the U. S. Unified Atlantic Command, and the U. S. Atlantic Fleet on April 30, 1965.
On June 17, 1967, he was awarded a Gold Star in lieu of a second Distinguished Service Medal: "For exceptionally meritorious service as Commander in Chief Atlantic, Commander in Chief U. S. Atlantic Fleet, Commander in Chief Western Atlantic Area, and Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic..."
On June 3, 1967, he was named by President Johnson to succeed Admiral David L. McDonald, USN, as Chief of Naval Operations, Navy Department. Admiral Moorer became the eighteenth Chief of Naval Operations on August 1, 1967.
On January 13, 1969, he was awarded a Gold Star in lieu of a Third Award of the Distinguished Service Medal "For exceptionally meritorious service as Chief of Naval Operations from August 1967 to January 1969."
He was reappointed Chief of Naval Operations by President Nixon on June 12, 1969. He was then nominated by President Nixon on April 14, 1970, to serve as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The Senate confirmed the appointment on June 17, 1970.
On July 1, 1970, he was awarded a Gold Star in lieu of a Fourth Award of the Distinguished Service Medal "for exceptionally meritorious service to the Government of the United States in a duty of great responsibility as the Chief of Naval Operations from August 1967 to July 1970." The citation reflects his contributions to the modernization of the Navy's ships and aircraft, to the United State's future status as a world maritime power, to the security of the United States, and in support of United States foreign power and national strategy.
On July 2, 1970, Admiral Moorer assumed the office of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He was reappointed as Chairman of the J CS by President Nixon on June 20, 1972. This second appointment was confirmed by the Senate on June 30, 1972.
The Defense Distinguished Service Medal was presented by Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird on January 10, 1973 for "extraordinary meritorious and distinguished service to the Government of the United States in a position of unique responsibility as Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff from July 1970 through January 1973." The accompanying citation notes, "Admiral Moorer has carried the heavy responsibilities of the country's senior military officer with great distinction during a crucial period in the history of the United States."
He has been relied upon extensively by the President, the National Security Council, and the Secretary of Defense for advice and counsel, which "has invariably been characterized by thoroughness, accuracy and wisdom." Also cited are his contributions in the areas of negotiations related to the Strategic Arms Limitations, Mutual and Balanced Force Reductions, Incidents at Sea, and the effectiveness of the Joint Chiefs of Staff representing the Armed Forces of the U. S. in the national security decision making process.
On July 2, 1974, Admiral Moorer retired from active duty. At his retirement ceremony, a second Department of Defense Distinguished Service Medal was presented by Secretary of Defense James R. Schlesinger for extraordinary performance of duty and exceptional achievement as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from January 1973 to June 1974. In this citation the Secretary of Defense said, "I particularly note that Tom Moorer has always put his country's interests before anything else, and it is this quality I recognize in presenting him the only oak leaf cluster ever given to the Defense Distinguished Service Medal."
Subsequent to his retirement, Admiral Moorer has joined the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Washington, D. C., as Senior Advisor, and in addition has served on several commercial boards, such as Blount, Inc., Texaco, Inc., Fairchild Industries, Inc., USLICO and CACI. He has served as Chairman of the Board of the U. S. Naval Aviation Association and the U. S. Naval Aviation Museum. He has been enshrined in the National Aviation Hall of Fame, as well as the Naval Aviation Hall of Honor, the Military Hall of Fame and the Business Hall of Fame.
Admiral Moorer and his wife, Carrie, live in McLean, Virginia."

She married James Daniel ERWIN 4 FEB 1811 in St. Matthews, Orangeburg Co., SC, son of James ERWIN and Sarah DANIEL. He was born 5 DEC 1788, and died 8 NOV 1852. "1806 May 25 Sarah Francis Francklow": Record of Confirmation for Sarah from St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Orangeburgh, South Carolina. (http://www.mindspring.com/~debard/Confirmations.htm)

"1808 July 19 Thomas Sabb to Sarah Francis Francklow" from the records of St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Marriages by Rev. J. P. Franklow. It appears that Sarah's father officated at her marriage to both Thomas SABB and to James Daniel ERWIN.

"1811 Feb 4 James Daniel Erwin to Sarah Frunier [sic, Frances?] Sabb" from the records of St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Marriages by Rev. J. P. Franklow. Though named as "Sarah Frunier Sabb" in the transcript of this marriage it is likely that "Frunier" may be a misreading of the handwriting for"Frances".

Sarah's father, John Philip FRANCKLOW may have officiated at both of his daughter's marriages.

"Departed this life on the 12th ult. in Barnwell Dist., in the thirty-fourth year of her age, Mrs. Sarah ERWIN, late consort of Colonel James D. ERWIN, after a painful illness of about three weeks... a fond husband has been bereaved of a tender wife, four small children of a doating mother. ... (Wednesday, August 20, 1823.)"
