General Notes: Husband -
"Emory Winship, another hero of the war in the Philippines, was born in Macon, Ga. His father was a captain in the Confederate army, and he is a nephew of General Philip Cook, of Georgia, a gallant soldier of the Army of Northern Virginia, prominent also in civil affairs during and after the civil war. His grandfather, Major Philip Cook, was in the war of 1812, and his great-great-grandfather, Captain John Cook, was a gallant soldier of the Revolution. His grandmother, Mrs. Isaac Winship, during the Atlanta campaign of 1864, turned her beautiful home into a hospital for Confederate soldiers, and after the war gave a great part of her time to the care of soldiers' graves and building monuments, notably those at Macon and Griffin. Emory Winship was the hero of a gallant fight at Malabon on March 5th, 1899. The following account of this affair was published in the Atlanta Constitution soon after its occurrence:
"On March 5th, at Malabon, a party of 125 marines was ordered ashore to test the strength of the enemy. Winship volunteered and was assigned to the temporary command of the Bologna, a sixty-foot tug captured from the Spanish, mounting a Hotchkiss revolving gun and manned by thirty-seven men, and the ship's steam cutter, mounting a Gatling. Winship remained on the Bologna to watch steam. The landing party foolishly advanced too far, and were suddenly set upon by a regiment of Philippinos. They were hard pressed and made for the boats, the natives in hot pursuit. Seeing this, Winship poured into the ranks of the natives a raking fire from the Hotchkiss rapid-fire gun, enabling his men to embark safely and killing thirty of the pursuing party. Commander Tausig, of the Bennington, afterwards said of the affair that Winship's coolness had been the direct means of saving the lives of 125 men.
"During the engagement he was wounded five times, but with extraordinary nerve and courage stood at his gun until the party was safely on board. He then walked into the ward-room and asked for a surgeon. He said nothing of his own condition, telling the doctor that one of his men was wounded in the shoulder. His own condition soon became apparent. He was shot through the hip and above the knee-cap, and had three smaller flesh wounds.
"This heroic conduct won for him the unstinted praise of his comrades."" [Story of the Confederate States, Joseph Tyrone Derry, p. 490]

General Notes: Husband -
Glenn Arland DITMORE was born February 22, 1936 in Okemah, Oklahoma, the third son of Glenn James DITMORE and Etta Mae CASADY. According to his birth certificate, his family resided at 417 North 5th Street in Okemah. His father was employed as a retail gasoline salesman, his mother, a housewife. To prevent confusion with his father's name, Glenn Arland was called "Arland".
In September,1937, his family moved to Concord, California. He started first grade at Concord Elementary School in 1942. He loved baseball and played Little League Baseball on the Williams Bear Cubs team in 1944. In eighth grade, he was on the Junior High School All star Basketball Team in 1950. Continuing his love of athletics throughout his youth, he played football, and basketball in high school. He was also active in the Concord Presbyterian Church, committing his life to Christ at Mount Herman in the Santa Cruz mountains. As a senior, he sang in the Mount Diablo High School Boys Quartet.
After graduating from high school, Arland enlisted in the United States Army in San Francisco, California and was inducted on August 18, 1954. His Army Service Number was US56245955 while on active duty. His home of record was his parent's address at 2425 Maple Avenue in Concord, California. He was to serve two years active duty and six more in the Army Reserve. After Basic Training, Arland completed the Field Artillery Basic Training Course. He earned an Army Specialty code of 140.00 and was promoted to Private First Class (T) on April 23, 1955. According to his DD Form 214, his most significant duty assignment was as a Chaplin's Assistant. This duty portended his deep religious commitment which he demonstrated throughout his life time. After serving in Germany for 17 months with the Second Armored Division in the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, on June 14, 1956, Arland was discharged from Fort Ord after serving on active duty for one year, nine months, and 27 days and transferred to the Army Reserve, California Military District, as "Unassigned" to complete his eight year service commitment. For his overseas service, Arland was awarded the Army Occupation Medal (Germany). His early discharge was granted for him to attend school. He resided at 3180 Willow Pass in Concord, California at this time. Seven years, eleven months and twelve days after enlisting, he received his Honorable Discharge from the Army of the United States on July 31, 1962.
While in service, Arland became "Glenn" to all his friends and acquaintances. From then on, most people knew him as Glenn, but that name change did not take in the family who regularly called him Arland. Arland's father lived until 1990, and his family still distinguished between him and his father by using his childhood name.
After his discharge, Arland graduated from Whitworth College, Spokane, Washington, majoring in History with two minors, Political Science and Christian Education. He then worked as a youth secretary for the San Pedro and Peninsula YMCA from the Santa Ana "Y", and was responsible for the GRA-Y and Hi-Y club programs throughout the peninsula.
Arland earned his Masters Degree in School Administration from Chapman College, Orange, California on February 8, 1970.
The California Congress of Parents & Teachers awarded Glenn Arland its Honorary Service Award Certificate on January 31, 1971 for his work while a vice-principal at La Veta Elementary School.
Arland first married Beverly SHERMAN, his high school sweetheart who was still a junior in high school, shortly before entering active duty in the summer of 1954. His mother objected to the marriage to the point where she would not attend the wedding. In fact, she locked herself in the work shed for the day. Beverly went to Germany to meet Arland to tell him that she was pregnant by another man in his absence. Arland wanted to raise the child as his own, but after the child was born and despite Arland's objections, Beverly sought and was granted a divorce.
Arland's second wife was Jo Ann ERICHSEN, a school teacher. He met Jo while he was a youth director at a small Evangelical Free Church in Spokane, Washington when a gospel group she was with did the service. She was a pianist, and Arland sang. He asked her to play while he rehearsed his singing. After announcing their engagement on Christmas Day, 1957 at a party given by Jo's parents, they married in Glendale Presbyterian Church on August 23, 1958 in Glendale, California. Arland and Jo had one daughter, Katherine Louise DITMORE, who was born on May 9, 1959 in Spokane, Washington, and adopted two other children, Cory Thomas DITMORE, born June 24, 1969 and adopted July 30, 1973, and Kristina Suzanne DITMORE, born February 22, 1972. Arland and Jo divorced in 1976.
Arland was very proud of his three granddaughters, Shannon Leigh and Shaylin Anne SANDERS, and Amy Joann BODEN. Every year he sponsored his grandchildren, and step-grandchildren, Jeff & Kevin BODEN, to summer camp at Forest Home in Forest Falls, California where Kathy's step-sons, Jeff and Kevin made their commitments to Christ.
Arland's widow was Joan Lavison SMALLWOOD who he married in Brea, California on June 30, 1984 in the backyard of a friend. They lived in Diamond Bar, California before moving to Sun Lakes, Arizona in 1996 after Arland retired as an Elementary School Principal from the Orange Unified School District.
Arland suffered his first heart attack on February 22, 1981, his 45th birthday, undergoing single bypass surgery shortly thereafter. Until then, he was very active athletically, playing softball in several leagues, often in the same season, basketball, tennis, & golf. While never a smoker or drinker, his arteriosclerosis was primarily attributed to his love of junk food and he frequently subsisted on a diet of hamburgers, fries, Twinkies & ice cream.
When Arland died on May 26, 2002, he and Joan lived at 9334 East Nacoma Drive in Sun Lakes. He had been fighting Metastatic Carcinoma for more than a year. He was cremated on May 31, 2002 at Paradise Memorial Crematory, Scottsdale, Arizona. "A Service of Celebration for the life of GLENN ARLAND DITMORE was held on June 1, 2002 at 2:00 PM in the Lamb Chapel of the Grace Community Church in Tempe, Arizona. His brother, Robert spoke of Arland and his family memories. During a visit to the Monterey Peninsula on _(date)_, Joan and Robert DITMORE, an older brother, spread Arland's ashes on the rocky beach below the ninth green of the Pebble Beach Golf Course. Arland loved the game of golf, and had played the Pebble Beach course with other members of his family during a family reunion in 1994.

John DITMORE married Eliza HENDRICKSON/HEINRICHSEN, daughter of J. HEINRICHSEN and Anna SCHREIKARDT(IN). John is age 50-60 in the 1830 census, indicating his birth between 1770 and 1780. He is thought to be related to Albert DETMAR of Charleston, South Carolina, perhaps a grandson?
SPECULATION:

The DITMORE House - Meeting Street, Charleston, South Carolina:
[From: The Ditmore Center, http://www.ditmorecenter.com/modules.php?name=News&file=print&sid=23]
* Albert Ditmore home at 23 Meeting Street. Built circa 1750, this three and 1/2 story single house is believed to have been built by Albert Detmar/Ditmere or Ditmore. Relationship unknown. Perhaps an ancestor or relation of our John.
* Betje Heinrichson, Eliza's father, owned a home on Meeting Street. 1806 and 1807 editions of the City Directories for Charleston, S. C., shows him living on W. Meeting St. Road. By 1809 he had moved to Hampstead, but by the time he wrote his Will in 1818 he was back living on Meeting Street. Address unknown. (Note - he lived 6 dwellings away from John Ditmore on Meeting Street in 1810.)
* John Ditmore was listed as living on Meeting Street in the 1810 Census, and the Census shows the Ditmores living 6 dwellings away from J. Baetgin "Betje" Heinrichson (Eliza Hendrickson Ditmore's father). Does not give address number - but someone might be able to trace this information while in Charleston. We know that the Ditmore's and Heinrichson/Hendrickson families were supposed to have lived in the St. Philip's Parish section of Charleston, so this might help narrow down the location. The area they lived was also sometimes referred to as the Charleston Neck section.
A John DITMORE is listed in three Judgement Roll records in South Carolina Archives, perhaps the son of Albert?:

A later Judgement Roll record for a John DITMORE, perhaps a son of John in the first three records and grandson of Albert DETMER?:
Series: L10018, Item: 0092A, ignore: 000. MOTTE, Abraham vs John DITMORE, 1/18/1814.
By 1830, our John DITMORE and family are in Tennessee.

Minnie's biography below was printed in The Country Connection, February 1, 2000, page 4:
A lady for all centuries; a pioneer and still smiling
She is 104 years old, living in her third century, but you would never guess her age by talking to her, or by looking at her either.
Minnie Hume is a true Oklahoma Pioneer, Born in Ranger, North Carolina on a September day just before the turn of the Century--the 20th Century that is, Minnie moved to Hydro, Indian Territory, in 1906, when she was 11 years old.
The oldest child of the six children of Ples Henry and Ida Alice Akins Ditmore, Minnie soon suffered the loss of her mother, who died at a young age.
Ples's brother, U. F. Ditmore had also moved to the Hydro area, and U. F.'s sister-in-law, Rintha Stepp, was a widow with four children. Ples and Rintha had four children of their own, so Minnie then had 13 brothers and sisters.
When she was 15 years old, Minnie married Everett Ray Hume. Their first home was in Vanese, Oklahoma, but in the 1920's they moved to Weather- ford. Everett opened up his own business, the E. R. Hume Welding Shop on Rainey Street.
Everett and Minnie had six children, and life was busy and good. In 1947, they selected a home site on their farm west of Hydro, and began to build. But tragedy struck when Everett and the couple's 16 year old son were in an accident on Highway 66, not far from their home-to-be. Their son was killed, and Everett was so badly injured that he was confined to a wheelchair the rest of his life.
The Humes moved to a home on College Street in Weatherford, and it was then that Everett taught Minnie to drive. She drove her pink 1959 Oldsmobile until 1992. (She was then 96 years old.)
In 1968, Everett passed away. Now alone, Minnie took over the couple's rental property business and also rented part of her house, mostly to college students. Many of those students have never forgotten Minnie and have kept in touch for many years.
When Minnie decided she was no longer able to take care of her rental properties, she sold her home and rentals, and moved to a smaller home in Weatherford where she still lives.
Two caregivers, Mary Branson of Hydro and Mary Smalley of Weatherford, take turns staying with Minnie to make sure all goes well with her. Minnie loves these ladies very much, and brags on their cooking talents. She especially loves going for drives with Mary Branson, and they always make a stop for an ice cream cone -- strawberry!
Minnie has always had many friends and lots of family members who love her, and she is always happy when they visit. A special treat is when grandson Keith Hume of Amarillo, who is a hair stylist, comes to visit. He gives her permanents and "fixes her up pretty."
An active member of the First Baptist Church for many years she sang in the choir there. Now that she is unable to attend church on a regular basis, she makes sure to watch church services on television. Reading her Bible is a favorite pastime.
In the summer, Minnie enjoys her front yard and flowers. Family and friends get together for her birthday party in September each year.
Minnie could write a book. We hope she does, for inside this smiling 104 year old, who looks maybe 75, there is surely a whole library, filled with wisdom of three centuries." (Provided by Harriet Anderson)
Minnie died at the age of 107 years, 8 months, and 30 days. She is buried in Hydro Masonic Cemetery, Blaine County, Oklahoma. Find A Grave Memorial #28020613 created by: Robin & Beverly Kellison
on Jul 03, 2008 lists her birth in 1895 and her death in 2003 and presents a picture of her and Everett Ray HUME's shared headstone.
"My dad and I went to see my Aunt Minnie Hume at her home a few days before her death, in Weatherford OK. She was heavily sedated in an induced coma due to advanced and painful cancer. She died there with her family surrounding her." [Bonnie Bowen]

General Notes: Husband -
Pleasant "Ples" Henry DITMORE, born 5 September 1869, was a son of Charles Willis DITMORE and Mary Catherine HAMPTON.
Note: There is a Pleasant HENRY, age 35, Merchant, in the 1850 census of Cherokee County, North Carolina. Might our Pleasant Henry have been named for him?

Ples's first wife, Ida Alice AKIN died 8 October 1910.
Caddo County, Oklahoma marriage records list Ples H. DITMORE married to Rosa ROSS on 4 February 1912. What happened to Rosa?
Ples married "Pinthia" STEPP on 8 January 1919, recorded in Caddo County Marriage Book 9. The 1920 census lists Ples wife as "Mirintha". She is known to be Marintha Mae BALL, the widow STEPP. It was the third marriage for both.

Gilford BOWEN is the husband of Ples' sister, Bessie Mae DITMORE.
(Note: Marjorie, born 4 Jan 1920, after the census cutoff date, should not have been named in this census.)
Ples' granddaughter, Linda Joyce DITMORE, recalls that Ples lived with his children in his later years, living as much as a month with one before going on visiting another.
Ples Henry died 28 January 1957 in Weatherford, Oklahoma. In a picture, his headstone simply states:
DITMORE
PLES H.
1869 - 1957
General Notes: Wife -
Found the marriage date, 4 February 1912, for Ples H. and Rosa ROSS, but no other information. My suspicion is that she probably died about 1917, before Ples married Marinthia Mae BALL. It is interesting that Nelia Lucile DITMORE, d/o Ida Alice Akin, and her husband, Lee Edward RUSSELL named a daughter Rosa Lee. In the apparently few years that Rosa was a step-mother, she must have been looked on favorably by Ida Alice's offspring. Names come from someplace; ergo, was Rosa ROSS was the honoree?

"John Boyd served in Troop G of the 7th Cavalry, under Col. James B. ERWIN. 7 John entered Mexico March 15, 1916, according to his papers. 8 He was a sharpshooter and an excellent horseman. A captain in the 7th Cavalry 9 wrote that Pershing pushed them and the horses unmercifully in his drive to catch Villa. The 7th Cav. participated in the battle of Guerrero, southwest of Mexico City, March 29, 1916. After riding all night, a forced march of 17 hours, the cavalry negotiated deep arroyos down to the valley, surprised the Villistas, and killed 30 or 40, only to learn that Villa himself had escaped. The Cavalry engaged with bandits at Santo Tomas, south of Ensenada and Tijuana, Apr 27, 1916." "Tragedy struck at 10:35 p.m. on June 15 1919, when Private (PVT) Sam Tusco, HQs Co, 82nd FA, was killed by a sniper's bullet and PVT Burchard Casey, also of HQs Co, was severely wounded. The District HQs, under the command of BG James B. ERWIN, ordered 3,600 American soldiers to cross into Mexico at 11 p.m. on 15 June 1919 to prevent further promiscuous firing into El Paso and to provide protection for American citizens. The American Force consisted of the 24th Inf Regt, the 5th Cav Regt, the 7th Cav Regt, and the 2nd Bn, 82nd FA. At 12:20 a.m., 16 June 1919, LT McMahan arrived by motorcycle at the location of the 1st Bn, 82nd FA. His instructions from COL Hadsell were to open fire on the Juarez Racetrack, as the Villistas had been definitely located there. Using shrapnel rounds the first artillery shot was fired across the Rio Grande River into the Juarez Racetrack by Battery A, 1st Bn, 82nd FA, at 12:30 am on 16 June 1919. Battery A fired a total of 52 rounds and Battery B fired a total of 12 rounds before a "Cease Fire" was called at 1 a.m." (The Origins of the 82nd Field Artillery Regiment By Daniel P. Excerpts from Cosby Dawson SMITH's obituary published on ____ in the ______:
'Tis a sad, yet a true fact, that through the dispensations of an overruling Providence, we are forced to mourn the loss of another one of our country's most gallant and faithful defenders, by the death of Lieut. C. D. SMITH, company F, 9th Georgia Regiment... Through the interposition of that Providence, he was permitted to survive the hardships, privations and dangers of the various campaigns thro' which the Army of Northern Virginia had to pass (though not untouched, for he had to suffer twice from severe wounds) until the 7th of April last, whilst on that memorable retreat from Richmond, Anderson's Brigade was ordered to charge the enemy, and whilst leading the charge, as was ever his custom, he fell, pierced through the heart by a deadly missile. Unable to urge his comrades on by words, he did so by waving his hand... a dutiful son,, a kind brother, a benevoleut [sic] citizen, and an affectionate husband and a brave soldier... He has left a young wife and an infant boy without a father's watchful eye of [sic] guiding hand..." "Death of Mrs. Henry GOODMAN - On Saturday morning last, at three o'clock, God whispered to the spirit of Mrs. Henry Goodman, and it quickly and peacefully winged its way to its eternal resting place... Mrs. Goodman's birth place was in this city; she was born February 22nd, 1840, the daughter of Josiah Doles and of Martha Doles, formerly Martha Pierce, the sister of Dr. Lovick Pierce, the great Methodist preacher. She was the youngest sister of General George Doles. In 1860 she was married to C. D. Smirth, who lost his life in April 1865, as a Confederate soldier, in the battles around Petersburg. The result of that union was one child, a son, C. D. Smith, who preceded her to the grave more than a year ago. On February 15th, 1871, she married Mr. Henry Goodman, and their thirty years of married life have ben a continuous illustration of loyal, patient devotion, and constant loving affection. One child, dying in infancy, was the fruit of this marriage. She was buried on Sunday morning, at half past nine, the funeral services being held at the home, she had so long presided over, and were conducted by Rev. J. H. Mashburn, of the Methodist church of which the deceased and her husband were both faithful members. Of near relatives she leaves one sister, Mrs. Mary Wright and three neices, and three young grand-children, children of her son, C. D. Smith. Her bereaved husband has the universal sympathy of our people... " [Transcribed from a copy of the newspaper article, date, and newspaper not available.
