There is a question as to the name of Absalom and Ann Daniel EILAND's daughter who married James FELTS. Her name has not been found in records, but James was named as a son-in-law in the will of Absolem Eland, July 26, 1812, Jones Co, Georgia.
1. Virginia, according to Diane EILAND on her website, The Eiland and Caffey Families, at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=eilandfamily&id=I02428.
2. Possibly Sarah Jane, according to Barbara Hunt, Silver City, New Mexico, who wrote "(believed to have been named Sarah Jane) who died early."

General Notes: Husband - Capt Absolem B. EILAND, CSA

Absalom Eiland married Elizabeth Pace on 13 May 1845 in Muscogee County, Georgia.

Absalom's brother was Allen Eiland of Crawford, Alabama.
"Mr. Allen Eiland, of Crawford, in Alabama has written a letter to General James N. Bethune, in which he proposes that southern emigration societies be established in every town in the southern states, with a view of sending forward slaveholders to Kansas and to purchase lands in that territory which, which are only to be resold to slaveholders. He proposes to go himself to Kansas, if he can meet with suitable encouragement, and thinks he can by the first of February bring into the territory twenty-five voters, who are to be depended upon...." [The Evening Post, New York, New York, Tuesday, October 9, 1855, Page 2]
The purpose was to secure Kansas as a slave state and to counter the "emigrant Aid Societies" of Boston and others organized to send freesoilers and abolitionists into Kansas to put down slavery. Absalom apparently concured and went to Kansas in 1857.
"We learn from the Montgomery Messenger that Capt. A. B. EILAND, formerly of the neighboring county of russell, Ala., in company with a small number of emigrants, passed through Montgomery last Sturday [sic], en route for Kansas." [The Charleston Courier, Charleston, South Carolina, Wednesday, April 15, 1857, Page 2]

Elizabeth is presumed to have died before 1860 when she is not listed with her husband.

General Notes: Husband - John Absolom EILAND

"The youngest child in the family, John Absalom, reared his family in the Red Oak community where he and his wife, Rhoda Rebecca (Milligan), are buried in the Red Oak Baptist Church Cemetery. In 1899, he homesteaded 160 acres of land in that community. He has been remembered as a very industrious person who had many skills. In addition to operating a general store for which he would drive to Searight to get supplies, he worked as a carpenter and bricklayer. Among his special contributions to the community was using his woodworking ability to build fine coffins. He also served for a time as a Justice of the Peace.
John and his wife reared the following children (not in the order of birth): Carrie, m. Tom Acree; Tolue, m. Dan Sightler; Zonie, m. Bill Bulger; Zadie, m. Jess Bulger; Willie Mae, b. 1892, m. Richard Malcolm Corbitt; and Claude, m. Lena Corbitt. Several in the next generation of this family are C.W. Eiland, Shirley Sightler, Clyde Corbitt, and his sister, Mattie Lou (Corbitt) Griffith."

General Notes: Wife - Julia EILAND

Julia EILAND married Seaborn Heath RIGGINS.

In the 1945 obituary of Terrence Vinson EILAND, the married names of Terrence's sisters Julissa and Julia are in error. "Mrs. Julia LITTLEJOHN" is named as a sister; also named as a sister is "Mrs. Julisa [sic] RIGGINS." The 1900 census makes it clear that Mrs. LITTLEJOHN was Julissa; Julia was the wife of Seaborn RIGGINS.

General Notes: Husband - Levi Daniel EILAND, Sr, J. P.

Levi Daniel EILAND, son of Absolem EILAND and Ann Nancy DANIEL, is said to have been named for his mother's "favorite and youngest brother, Levi." Considerable evidence strongly suggests Ann's brother was Levi DANIELL who died in 1800 in Hancock County, Georgia. IF TRUE, Ann Nancy was a daughter of James DANIELL of Fairfield County, South Carolina who was James, son of William and Frances O'DANIEL, was born 1721 in Stafford County, Virginia and died 1798 in Hancock County, Georgia.

In the censuses, Levi D. EILAND is age 30-40 in 1830, 40-50 in 1840, 56 in 1850, 67 in 1860, and 75 in 1870, born then between 1792 and 1795 in Georgia.

"Levi Daniel Eiland was a son of Absalom and his wife, Nancy Ann (Daniel). This family moved to Washington Co, GA., around the time Levi was born. Their property later fell in Hancock Co. when it was formed. Levi Daniel Sr. was in AL as early as 1830 according to census reports. It is not known when he lived in Covington Co. nor how long, but at one time he owned a small farm at Bell's Crossing near the eastern border. He apparently lived mostly in the edge of Coffee Co. as he served there as a Justice of the Peace from 1819 to 1850. He also served as the tax collector sometime before the war. Levi was a very successful individual who contributed much to his family and community. He became a farmer, stock-raiser, builder, millwright, and school teacher. When he was in his late 20s and getting his family started, his father gave him several slaves to help with all the different types of work. He took part in the community life and was an active member of the Methodist Church. At his death in 1872, he was buried in a family cemetery near Bullock." (Diane Eiland, http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~eilandfamily/html/fam07075.htm)

Some Eiland researchers believe this family line descended from Absalom Eiland, who was an early settler in North Carolina and Georgia. He or an earlier ancestor immigrated from the country of Wales.
It is believed that Levi Daniel Eiland, born circa 1785, was a son of Absalom and his wife, Nancy Ann (Daniel). This family moved to Washington County, Ga., around the time Levi was born. Their property later fell in Hancock County when it was formed. Other likely children of Absalom and Nancy include Enoch, James, Asa, Daniel, Steven, Nancy and possibly Elizabeth (Eiland) Thompson. There were several others most likely.

Levi was married to Catherine "Katie" Shaw circa 1811. They reared the following children: Isaiah, b. 1812, m. Sarah Caffey; Lucinda "Lucy," b. 1814, m. 1830 Mathew Wilson; Rebecca, b. 1816, m. "The first son to be enumerated in a Covington County census was Levi Jr. and his family in 1850. He was 38 years of age with his wife, Lydia Ann, who was 38 as well. With them were the following children: James Absalom, 17; Emily, 15; Neri Daniel, 13; Mary E., 8; Joseph, 6; Stephen, 4; Cullen, 2; and Sarah, 1. Another daughter, Mary, was born in 1864.
Levi Jr. had acquired land in this county as early as 1850. In that year he purchased 40 acres in the Brantley area which would fall in Crenshaw County when it was formed in 1866. He also acquired three additional forty acre tracts in 1856-57 in the nearby Union community.

TERRIBLE TRAGEDY AT SPRING LAN
Dade City, June 24. - A terrible tragedy occurred last night in the Spring Lake settlement of Hernando County. As a result, Mrs. Josephus Eiland and Walter B, Hunter are dead, and Josephus Eiland is not expected to survive. A deadly duel was fought in the night in the house of Eiland. Two dead bodies and a man in dying aonies greeted the astonished eyes of the neighbors when they reached the scene.
MURDER IN HIS HEART.
Walter B. Hunter, who lives at Spring Lake, had been in Brooksville during the day yesterday. On his way home, he stopped at the house of Eiland, and, with murderous intent, broke into the residence. Proceeding to the bedroom of Eiland, Hunter shot and killed Mrs. Eiland as she lay in bed, beside her husband. Before he could complete his work, Eiland leaped from the bed and grappled with the murderer. A death struggle resulted. Eiland, being the stronger man, obtained his gun and shot Hunter, but not before Hunter had seriously wounded him.
Hunter died in a few minutes, and Eiland, weak from the exertion and the loss of blood, was unable to summon help.
NEIGHBORS CAME.
Neighbors, who had been aroused by the shots, soon reached the scene, and gave Eiland attention. The other two were beyond assistance.
It is not believed that Eiland will recover. It is known that Eiland and Hunter had some trouble recently, but it was believed to be amicably settled. Hunter was probably drunk, and decided to murder Mr. and Mrs. Eiland.
Josephus Eiland is the son and Hunter was the son-in-law of Daniel Eiland, and formerly a resident of Pasco County.
[The Tampa Tribune, Tampa, Florida, Thursday, June 25, 1903, Page 1]

Two days later:
ROW STARTED AT WRESTLING MATCH
Brooksville, June 26. - ... The following details of the Eiland-Hunter tragedy at Spring Lake are learned:
About three weeks since, James Croft gave a log rolling. The community at large attended, among them Hunter and Eiland. Hunter and Eiland engaged in a wrestling match, Eiland throwing Hunter each fall. Hunter became angry and assaulted Eiland with a knife. Friends intervined, preventing any bloodshed.
Tuesday, Hunter was in attendance at court. Upon going home Hunter went to Eiland's house about dark and began cursing Eiland, swearing he had come to get even. Mr. and Mrs. Eiland began remonstrating with Hunter, and asked him to leave the place when Hunter pulled his pistol and began shooting at Eiland.
Mrs. Eiland jumped between them. Four shots took effect upon her person, one in the right elbow, one in the wrist, one in the hip and one in the heart.
One shot struck Eiland in the shoulder, passing out at the spinal column.
Two of the five shots fired in return by Eiland took effect near the heart of Hunter.
Neighbors passing about an hour later found the bodies. Hunter was lying at the front gate about 30 yards distant, dead. Mrs. Eiland was in her husband's arms, dead, and Eiland was unable to move from the effects of his wound.
Eiland and Hunter were brother-in-law. eiland was married about eight months ago to Miss Duncan, of Tampa.
A little boy was born to Mrs. Hunter the night Mr. Hunter was killed.
The deaths have cast a pall over the whole Spring Lake community.

Robbie Zack Folmar is buried in Peaceful Acres Memorial Gardens, Opp, Covington County, Alabama. Find A Grave Memorial# 16684254 lists his birth on February 18, 1895 in Pike County, Alabama, and his death on May 7, 1978 in Opp, Covington County, Alabama. The memorial presents this biography:
Robbie Zack Folmar was born in the Elam-Rodgers community near Goshen, Pike County, Alabama, the only son of William Franklin Folmar and Nancy Jane Kelley. Robbie Folmar married Nettie Lou Eiland, a little girl he grew up with who lived across the street from him in Bullock, Crenshaw County, Alabama. They were married 12-29-1914 at Bullock.
Robbie and Nettie farmed while their children were growing up. They lived in the Straughn Community of Covington County. During World War II, they moved to Opp and ran the bus station in downtown Opp located across the street from the U.S. Post Office. They then opened a grocery store and started a rolling store route with son Verlon as a partner. As the grocery store business grew Robbie sold the rolling store in order to help Nettie run the main store.
But Robbie got cabin fever in the grocery store and took a job driving a rolling store for Boutwell Grocery in Opp. Robbie drove the store on a different route each day during the week where he covered most of Covington County.
He was probably the best known man in the county during this period, as people really liked the convenience of having the rolling store come by their homes. During summer
time when school was out, Robbie would take grandchildren with him on his route. I can personally assert that it was a wonderful experience riding with my grandfather on these occasions.
Robbie Zack Folmar died 5-7-1978 after being injured in an automobile accident.

Dr. O.G. Eiland
Obituary
Dr. O.G. Eiland, died at his residence, near Scooba, Miss., January 25, 1877, was born in Hancock County, Georgia, December 25, 1806, was reared in Perry County, Ala., and educated at Athens, Georgia. Was married to Mary Hatcher, daughter of Colonel James Hatcher, of Dallas County, Ala., in 1835.
Dr. Eiland was a man of strong individuality and somewhat peculiar characteristics. He was a man of strong native intellect, nice sensibilities, fine general culture and splendid acquirements in his profession, which he practiced in Marion, Ala., for the first decade of his professional life with eminent success; was one of the founders and first trustees of the celebrated Judson Institute of Marion, Ala.(Judson still is a prestigious female college) )Becoming involved by security and otherwise, he lost his fortune in the crash of 1838-40; moved to Lauderdale County, Miss., in 1845, where, in a few years, by a very large and successful practice of his profession, he laid the foundation of another fortune, most of which was swept away by the late war.(War Between The states)
Dr. Eiland was twice married, losing his first wife in 1852; was married to Miss Mary Dabbs, of DeKalb, Miss., in 1856, who survives him. He had ten children, six of whom are living, had been a member of the Baptist Church for thirty years, and died in the Saviour whom he had so long worshipped.

General Notes: Husband - Richard EILAND, Sr.

Richard Eiland, born 1681 at Belfast, Antrim County, Ireland. [From Barbara Hunt-Conner, referencing David Fryxell, 17 May 2013]

Richard EILAND married Elizabeth HEATH, daughter of James I. and Ann HEATH before 20 December 1702, when James lists a bequeath to his daughter Elizabeth EILAND in his last will and Testament.

Richard ILAND is named among the 80 persons transported to Virginia by Capt. Francis EPES and others for which they received a 4000 acres land grant in Henrico County, Province of Virginia on 24 April 1703. [Cavaliers and Pioneers: Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants. Vol. 3: 1695-1732. Richmond [VA], Nugent, Nell Marion, abstractor, Virginia State Library, 1979. 578p. Indexed, page: 72] How does this connect with Elizabeth EILAND, named in the Dec 1702 Will of her father, James I. HEATH of Princess Ann County, Virginia? When did the 80 persons transported arrive in Virginia?

In regard to Richard EILAND being one of the 80 persons transported to the Colony of Virginia by a consortium headed by Capt. Francis EPES in 1703, one transcription of the resulting 24 April 1703 land grant for 4000 acres does not record the name Richard EILAND among those transported, but does list a "Richard ----- *" with the notation "*Surname not included in manifest" Source cited: Henrico Co., VA Virginia Patent Book 9, pp. 540-541, found at http://files.usgwarchives.org/va/henrico/deeds/patent.txt.

The surname EILAND is found in numerous spellings. Eiland researchers post conflicting information on this family. The following posts by Diane Eiland and Jolene Noteboom provide background information for these notes.

"Notes: Richard Eiland: Richard ILAND showed up on a "List of Immigrants" on April 24, 1703 when Capt' Francis EPES and others were granted 4000 acres of land in Henrico Co, on the north side of the Appamattock River for the transportation of 80 persons including Richard ILAND.
April 28, 1711, Thomas CORPREW was granted 204 acres in Princess Anne Co, VA, near the Blackwater, at a place called the "Short Acer". This tract adjoined land of Richard ILAND and Tames TOOLEY [sic].
January 22, 1717, Richard ILAND was granted 74 acres in Princess Anne Co, VA, this grant for two persons, Richard EILAND and Thomas WALKER.
In later years the line between VA and NC was resurveyed and resulted in some who had been classed in VA actually being in NC. This survey placed part of the land of Richard Eiland's Plantation in VA and the rest in NC.
Richard Eiland was a member of the first North Carolina Assembly in 1731 as a representative from Currituck Co..
NOTES AND WILL FROM FLOYD EILAND: Richard was born in Belfast, Ireland in 1665 and married Elizabeth in Ireland about 1690. They came to Currituck Co, North Carolina some time in 1692. Richard Eiland purchased land in 1709 and when the Colonies of Virginia and North Carolina had their division boundaries re?surveyed in 1727/1728, Richard and Elizabeth Eiland's property was found to be on each side of the Virginia and North Carolina line. Their homestead was found to be on the North Carolina side making them residents of the Colony of North Carolina. When Richard's will was written on March 7, 1733, it listed his sons as: Robert, George and Richard; and his daughters as Sarah Eiland, Jane WAYE, and Elizabeth RAULINGS. Richard Eiland was serving on the North Carolina General Assembly in 1731. He did not answer the Roll Call of the General Assembly in 1733. He died some time in 1735."

The Watkins Family History Society provides these dates of birth for Richard and Elizabeth's children and lists a seventh child, James. The dates are not sourced, but compatible with a marriage before 1702; however, Robert Eiland was born after 1712.

[* Note: Richard and Elizabeth's children were most likely born in Princess Ann County, Colony of Virginia, not Currituck County, North Carolina. Richard's land was in Princess Ann County until the resurvey of the border between Virginia and North Carolina in 1727/8. The resurvey drew the border through Richard's land and the lesser southern portion of Richard's property was then located in Currituck Precinct, North Carolina. Some say the children were born in Johnston County, North Carolina, but Johnston was not formed until 1746 from Craven County. Craven was established in 1712, when the name was changed from Archdale County, originally included as a precinct of Bath County. Currituck County was established by 1670 as a precinct of Albemarle County. Richard EILAND's land was never in Archdale. RLD]
[**Note: Robert was born after 1712. Richard ILAND's Will, dated 7 March 1733, says Robert has not reached the age of 21. RLD]
[***] James is not named in Richard ILANDS' Will and is presumed to have died before 1733. RLD]

This record provided by Jolene Noteboom indicates Richard EILAND may have owned two parcels of land in Currituck County, North Carolina while living in Princess Ann County, Virginia. "not dated" does make this speculative. Were these parcels in addition to that part of Richard's land in Princess Ann County prior to the survey of 1727/8 which reestablished the Virginia - North Carolina border?

The earliest reference to Richard EILAND, Sr. in Currituck Precinct, Albemarle County, North Carolina is in 1709. [Persons Mentioned in Currituck Precinct Deeds Prior to 1725, p. 1] Also named in this list is Robert HEATH, late of Va., 1709.] Considering that Richard's lands were in Princess Ann County, Virginia until the resurvey of the border in 1727/8, the record below simply shows Richard as a witness to the sale of land to Robert HEATH, his brother-in-law. Richard's lands in Virginia bordered on Currituck Precinct.

On 22 January 1717, Richard ILAND received a grant of 74 acres in Princess Ann County, Virginia, joining the North River for importing two persons, Richard EIFLAND [EISLAND] and Thomas WALKER, to the Colony and Dominion of Virginia. The grant was signed by A. SPOTSWOOD. [A digital image of the record is available.] What is the relationship between Richard ILAND and the imported Richard EIFLAND? Perhaps it is Richard, the "pore sick sone" mentioned in Richard's Will reentering the colony?

Curiously, in 1718 and 1719, there are records of Richard paying a tax of tax of 2 shillings and 6 pence on a 100 acre tract of land. Another case of records transferred to Currituck Precinct, North Carolina after the border survey of 17/27/8?

Absalom is said to have married Ann, the daughter of James DANIELL of Fairfield County, South Carolina. RLD]

Considering the crossed out presentation of his Will, Richard may have died before the October 1734 Court session but for some reason his Will was withdrawn and probate delayed until the October 1735 Court.

Question: Is this Richard EILAND the husband of Esther and father of the Richard EILAND who married Elizabeth HEATH, daughter of James I. HEATH of Princess Anne County, Virginia? Looking at the time frames, this Richard was in the colonies before Sep 1651. How much before? If at least 21 in 1651, born before 1630. He is of age to be the father of the Richard EILAND who married Elizabeth HEATH.
1663 Susan ISLAND transported by George MORRIS, New Kent Co, 19 July 1663. [New Kent Co VA Patent Book 4, p. 459.] Susan's relationship to Richard Eiland, if any is not known.
Seven years later a ____ ISLAND, "relative of Richard EILAND," married John EVANS, recorded in Married Well and Often, Marriages of the Northern Neck of Virginia 1649-1800 by Robert K. Headley Jr., p. 126: "EVANS, John & ISLAND [fnu] bef 9 May 1670; bride was the relative of Richard ISLAND. (NC OB 1666-78: 95)"
"What was the relation between Richard ISLAND and the bride of John EVANS?"
It is not known when Richard EILAND died.
