Jack Stuart Davis now has Y-DNA results which provides "there is no doubt that my great grandfather, William James Davis, was the son of one of the Hicks Brothers who lived next door to the Eady Farm. One (or both of them) "rolled in the hay" as some of us southerners say with Mary Eady." [Jack Davis, email, 9/302009, more to follow.]
The question remains though about why Mary EADY's sons bore the DAVIS surname.

A question remains though about why Mary EADY's sons bore the DAVIS surname.

Previously:
"The death certificate of William James DAVIS in 1937 indicates his Georgia-born parents were a W. J. DAVIS and Mary EADY. Although I have not been able to locate this W. J DAVIS on the 1870 census, Mary EADY was enumerated that year on her father John EADY's farm in northern Wilkinson Co. The close proximity of their parents (a couple of miles) and ages fits well with the assumption that William J. DAVIS and Mary EADY met and probably (but not certainly) married sometime between late 1870 and late 1871. If indeed, William J. DAVIS and Mary EADY and two boys were a family in 1875, that was no longer the case by 1880. The 1880 census shows Mary EADY living on her father John EADY's farm in nearby Wilkinson, co. with her two sons William (b. 1871) and Charles (b. 1875) Named as EADY. RLDsuggesting the father of the two boys was either dead, working elsewhere, or had abandoned the three of them." (Jack Davis, JStuartD1@aol.com)

Cook reveals that his father-in-law, Colonel Edward Hampton, was killed during the American Revolution and that the said Ellis was accidentally shot and killed by militia in pursuit "of certain persons known to be inimical to the cause of this country." Noting that his wife has never received any kind of remuneration "for this accidental misfortune," the petitioner prays "for some indemnification in right of his wife." General Notes: Husband - James Washington ROWL

The 1900 census provides that James Washington ROWL was born in May 1876. James listed his birth date as 29 May 1873 on his 1918 draft registration card. The 1910 gives "Gerge or J. W. ROWL" which may indicate a nickname "George" (from his Washington) and his given initials as "J. W." reflected also on his 1918 Draft Registration Card. The 1920 "Wash J." is a variant of the 1900 and 1910, and the 1930 shows him as James W. ROLL.

A review of James' ages from censuses and his draft registration tend to support his birth in May 1876.
1900 24 b. May 1876.
1910 34 b. 1875/6.
1918 45 b. May 29 1873 [This date would have made James 45 when he filled out the draft card. Old enough to avoid the draft?]
1920 46 b. 1873.
1930 51 b. 1878/79.

James Washington ROWL's parents have NOT been proven.
POSSIBLE: Father of Samuel, 29 in 1880 and grandfather of James W. in 1880?

James Washington ROWL was first married about 1897 to Willie B. [GREEN], 19, named in the 1900 census.

A second wife, Eugenia, 32, to whom he has been married for 7 years is named in the 1910 census should be the mother of Amos, age 4. James' 1918 draft registration card and entries in the 1920 and 30 censuses indicate that she is Nancy Lugene EAST.

General Notes: Wife - Nancy Lugene EAST

Nancy Lugene EAST, "Eugenia" as named in the 1910 census, married James Washingtom ROWL about 1903. She was his second wife and the mother of Amos Mansell ROWL named in the 1910 census in Clay County, Alabama. J. W.'s WWI Draft registration, 18 Sept 1918, names "Lugene ROWL" as his nearest relative.

Nancy L. is James's wife in 1920, suggesting that "Nancy L." is Lugene and also mother of Charlie and Durell named in the 1920 census. Martha EAST, James' mother-in-law is living in their home in 1920, providing Nancy's maiden name, EAST.

General Notes: Wife - Jewell G. SINGLETARY

Jewell G. SINGLETARY was born 24 Jun 1898 in Grady County, Georgia, a daughter of Walter Hayes SINGLETARY and Lessie SINGLETARY. She is listed in records as both Jewell and Jewel.

Jewell married James Ulmer DANIELL on January 22, 1919 in Grady County. The U.S. Census for 1920 shows Jewel, 18, and James, 20, living on his father's farm in Pavo, Georgia. Their children were James Talbot DANIELL and Walter Fritz DANIELL.

James took his family to Miami, Florida in the mid 1920's. A picture of James, Jewell, Talbot and Fritz taken in Miami includes the notation "Miami FLA. 1925."

Jewel became enamored of a Mr. Edgar C. EATON in Miami. She divorced James and married Edgar about 1936. Family lore said EATON was a doctor. The 1945 Florida Population Census lists Jewel's husband as Edgar C. EATON, bookkeeper.

After the divorce, James and Jewell's sons Talbot and Fritz lived for several years at James' father's farm. While there, Fritz contracted colitis (some say pluresy) and died in 1936 at Charles Henry DANIELL's home. He was buried in Pierce Chapel Cemetery, Grady County, located on Pierce Chapel Road, north off U.S. Highway 84 between Cairo and Thomasville. The only DANIELL buried there, he is buried beside his SINGLETARY grandparents.

Jewell EATON of Winter Haven, Florida is named in the 1984 obituary of her son, James Talbot DANIELL.

The Thomasville Times-Enterprise, Thomasville, Georgia, July 5, 1990, published the obituary of Bessie SINGLETARY, Jewell's father's sister. Among Bessie's survivors are "niece Jewell EATON" and Jewell's sister, Flossie (SNIPES?), lived in Miami according to the obit. (Note: When I was a young boy in Miami in the 1940s and 50s, I recall occasionally being taken to visit "Aunt Flossie." At that time, I did not understand that she was the aunt of my half-brother James Talbot and the sister of my father's first wife. RLD)

The Georgia Deaths Index, 1919-98 lists Jewel G. EATON; Death Date, 10 Jun 1995; County of Death: Cobb; Gender, F; Race, W; Age: 96 years; County of Residence, Columbia; Certificate, 023722; Date Filed, 15 Jun 1995. Smyrna, Georgia is located in Cobb County.

General Notes: Husband - Samuel WALKER, Jr.

"Samuel WALKER Jr. was born on 28 March 1784. He died on 23 January 1841. Samuel married Frances "Fanny" EDDINS, daughter of Benjamin EDDINS, about 1804. Frances was born about 1785. She died about 1840."
Samuel WALKER, Jr. served in the South Carolina Legislature and then, after moving to Madison County, Alabama, held many public offices there also. He was at one time the Speaker of the Alabama House of Representatives. Samuel, Junior, married Fanny Eddins, daughter of the patriot Benjamin Eddins who was imprisoned in the Star Fort at Ninety Six during the Revolution. One Walker daughter also married into the Eddins family; other daughters are said to have married into the Edgefield families of Farrow, Mitchell, Holloway, Mays, and Beams. (References for the children's marriages, sometimes conflicting, can be found in the wills of Samuel Walker, Senior and Junior, Owen (1978, p. 528), Gandrud (1981, p. 22), and Edgefield Equity Cases 99 and 136.)

EDWARDS, ROBERT L - Married: 1827, Spouse: DANIEL, MRS- Married: SC. Data Quality: 0 generations, 0 ancestors, 53% completed fields, good documentation. (www.kindredkonnections.com)

General Notes: Wife - Mary "Polly" HILL

"Mary (Polly) HILL, dau. of Lodowick HILL and Susannah GRIGSBY was born 3 August 1786 and died 1816 in Edgefield County, SC. She married James DANIELS, son of William DANIELS and Lucretia BELL and had seven children." as shown in "The Hills of Wilkes County Georgia and Allied Families" Vol II, pages 485-488

CONFLICT WITH RESEARCH NOTES from Billie Jones.
I have Mary Polly Hill married to Mr. Payne. [The Hills of Wilkes Co. Ga. and
Allied Families by M. B. Warren,1972, Heritage Papers, Danielsville, Ga. 30600, (p. 164 from Family Bible Record of Theophilus Hill).]
However, I have these notes showing the conflict: According to John R. Clarke, Lodowich M. HILL (1765-?) who married Susannah GRIGSBY (b. 1771 in Loudon County, VA) were the parents of Mary HILL (1786-1867) who married, first, James DANIEL, son of William DANIEL and Lucretia BELL of Edgefield County, SC. After he died in 1816 she married Rev. Robert L. EDWARDS of the GA Conference of the ME Church. She died in Bibb County, GA. This data is in conflict with what I have on a marriage to Mr. Payne.

1860 GEORGIA HALL HOG MTN P O; Series: M653 Roll: 126 Page: 204: In the household of PAYNE L 63 F W VA, is M. PAYNE, 84 F W SC. Mary Hill Daniel EDWARDS (PAYNE?) would have been 74 at this time. Might this have been she? Hall County is next to Bibb County where Mary is said to have died in 1867 in Vinesville, Georgia.

DEATH AND OBITUARY NOTICES FROM THE SOUTHERN CHRISTIAN ADVOCATE 1867-1878, Issue of May 17, 1867 - "Sister Mary EDWARDS died in Vineville, Ga., on 30th of March, aged 81 years. Her maiden name was HILL. She was first married to James DANIELL in 1805, who died in 1816. In the year 1827 she was married to Rev. Robert L. EDWARDS of the Georgia conference. J. S. Key." (Email, JRC, 6/26/2004)
This may not solve the conflict mentioned by Billie, above, but it appears that there may have been time for another marriage to a Mr. PAYNE if it occurred between 1816 and 1827. Curious though that it was not mentioned in the obituary if it happened, or the writer may have been unaware of it.
