Peter E. DANIEL, born 10 September 1866, is a son of Edward Young DANIEL and Parthinia WARREN. Peter married Roser B. about 1888. He and family are found in the 1900 census of Pine Flat, Dallas County, Alabama. Although 5 children are indicated as living, only four are shown. Considering their date of marriage and the ages of other children, the deceased child may have died as an infant, born circa 1899.

His wife was Josie YEARTY who died in 1925. His parents are named as Bob DANIEL and Annah BRAND, step-mother. Information on the death certificate was provided by "Son's daughter, Inez HAND. The 1900 census provides an alternate date of birth: Dec 1891. "Son" Daniel's homemade headstone shows only "1884 -1955."

Researching this family is difficult because of the use of nicknames in almost all records. Marlane Daniel, a family researcher wrote: "The biggest kick I got was when Robert Daniel --Bob's son -- daughter told me that her father's name was Son Daniel and that he had no other name and that is what his death certificate says too. Even though the [1900] census lists him as Robert b. Dec. 1891. I just said 'Thank you, Ma'm.' and went on my merry way."

Son DANIEL's young, unmarried daughter, Dovie Montana DANIEL, gave birth to Bovene Mary Frances DANIEL on 2 June 1942 in Heard County, Georgia. She was Dovie's daughter by George Bluford "Blu" PIKE, a married man with five other children. On 7 November 1942, Son Daniel shot and killed George Bluford Pike.

"GEORGE B. PIKE SHOT AND KILLED" headlined the article published in the LaGrange Daily News, November 9, 1942. It reported that George Bluford PIKE was killed on a public road outside Franklin, Georgia by Sam[*] DANIEL "after trouble had occurred between the two sometime ago." DANIEL was being held in the Heard County jail. George was age 28, and left a wife, 4 daughters and 1 son. [Clark Johnson, Troup County Archives, email, 2 November 2011] [*]"Sam" should be "Son" Daniel.

On October 1, 1943, the "News and Banner", published in Franklin, Heard County, Georgia, reported that Son DANIEL, charged with murder and tried in Heard County Superior Court, was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to 11 to 15 years in prison.

Son DANIEL is buried in Salem Cemetery, Franklin, Heard County,
Georgia. A picture of his headstone is on Find A Grave Memorial# 49647707 created by David Rowl on Mar 13, 2010:

"Robert Moulthrop married first Sarah Daniel, one of the most beautiful women in this section, who was the daughter of James Daniel, a distinguished citizen of Macon, Georgia. To them was born Robert H.(Moulthrop). Following his father, in Masonic interests, he early joined Harmony Lodge F. A. A. General Notes: Wife -

Sarah "Lora" DANIEL is in records by several given names, Sarah, Flora and Lora. She is not to be confused with her sister, Sallie.

Sarah DANIEL, age 6, and her sister, Sallie, age 7, are two of Walter Henry DANIEL and Ida Florence WILLIAMS's children named in the 1880 census of Kemper County, Mississippi. Sarah's full name may have been Sarah Flora or Flora Sarah DANIEL. "Flora" being a nickname for Florence, she was likely named for her mother.

About 1894, Sarah, married Doty TUCKER of Louisiana. The 1900 census lists "Flora TUCKER", 26, born in Dec 1873. She is a "widowed" daughter, residing with her parents in Kemper County, Mississippi. In the household are her son Patrick TUCKER, 5, born in May 1895, whose father was born in Louisiana, and her unmarried sister, Sallie, 27, born in Nov 1872. Doty TUCKER, 26, divorced, resides in Caddo Parish, Louisiana in 1900.

"Flora" is named as "Lora W. TUCKER" in her widowed mother's Kemper County home in 1910. Her son, Patrick, 15, is with her.

Sarah/Flora/Lora TUCKER has not been confirmed in the 1920 census. Her son Patrick, 25, resides with his grandmother in Kemper County. Florence TUCKER, 54, Inmate, is in the 1920 census of Almo House, Bolivar County, Mississippi [Series: T625 Roll: 870 Page: 203]. She is about 7 years older than "Lora" TUCKER should be, a census age error?

In 1930, Lora TUCKER, 56, correct age, is an inmate in the East Mississippi State Hospital in Meridian, Lauderdale County. [Series: T626 Roll: 1153 Page: 300]

"Lora DANIEL, b. 1873, Binnsville, died circa 1952 in Meridian, MS, buried at East Mississippi State Hospital, Meridian, married Doty TUCKER." [Gil Robison]

Extracts from the article "EMSH seeks to honor unnamed dead" by Jennifer Jacob Brown, published in The Meridian Star on June 11, 2009:
An estimated 2,000 patients have been buried in East Mississippi State Hospital's Cedar Haven Cemetery. Because of the stigma associated with mental health problems in the past, many of those patients were buried in graves marked with only a number.
Because the hospital, which was originally named East Mississippi Insane Asylum, was established more than 125 years ago, records of who is buried in the cemetery are sparse at best. Hospital officials are unsure exactly when the cemetery itself was created, but guess that it began along with the hospital in 1885.
Diana Eggler, who works in the office of public information at EMSH, said the hospital gets calls every month from people who have learned that their ancestors died while in residence at the hospital and are interested in visiting their graves.
Most of the time, the hospital is not able to tell those people with any certainty whether their ancestors are buried in Cedar Haven Cemetery.
"Since the hospital's been here for so long and the cemetery's been here for so long, sometimes the records were just not kept well," Eggler said.
The cemetery now marks all its graves with names, thanks to funding from a support organization, and to former employee Sadie May Green, who took an interest in the cemetery when she was employed at EMSH, working to discover the identities of some of the patients who were buried there and procuring funds for 650 markers.
Because so many of the patients buried in Cedar Haven remain unidentified, and because descendants of former patients have shown interest in visiting their ancestors' resting place, EMSH hopes to create their own memorial honoring the cemetery's unnamed dead. Eventually, they hope to also purchase plaques for patients who are known to be buried in the cemetery with no marker, Eggler said.

General Notes: Husband -

Our Family Circle lists several potential parents for James ERWIN and includes the statement "So far, no conclusive proof has been presented as to the names of James' parents." [Our Family Circle, p. 418.] The very next line is "Robert Monro Erwin, now of France, has proof that John Erwin and Sarah Robinson married in Dublin, Ireland, and came to Philadelphia in 1739. According to his belief, this couple were the parents of James Erwin who married Sarah Daniel at Camden, S. C., in 1777."

"It is claimed by Dr. James D. ERWIN that the first four children of James and Sarah ERWIN were born in Camden Dist. near St. Stephen, and the others, eight in number, were born at their parent's plantation near Midway, thirty-five miles northeast of Erwinton." (Our family circle, Annie Elizabeth Miller, p. 432) James and Sarah had twelve children.

James ERWIN's wife was Sarah DANIEL (1762-1815), daughter of William DANIEL (O'DANIEL), Jr., her mother is not known. Their first four children were born in St. Stephen, Camden District, South Carolina. They then moved to Orangeburg District, later to be in Barnwell County and lived on Midway Plantation, later to be in Allendale County, and are buried at Antioch Cemetery, Allendale County, South Carolina. [Notes: St. Stephen in in present day Berkeley County. Barnwell County was created from Orangeburg District in 1800. Allendale County, South Carolina was created in 1919 from portions of Barnwell and Hampton counties. James and Sarah were buried in that part of Barnwell now part of Allendale County.]

"James ERWIN, b. about 1754, d. 1812(*) on his Midway plantation, between Branchville and Bamberg, S. C. The Charleston Year Book 1893, and the Journal of council of Safety, Jan. 18, 1776, mentions James ERWIN as officer in Revolutionary War. He was a Lieutenant in RATHMALER's Regiment and afterwards was Captain in CANTY's Co., MARION's Brigade. The D. A. R.'s have admitted ERWIN ladies to membership on 119144, the national member." ("Our family circle", p. 429)
*Note: The 1812 date is premature. James signed his Will on 29 October 1814 in Barnwell County.

General Notes: Wife -

Sarah DANIEL, born 11 June 1762, is the daughter of William O'DANIEL of White Oak Creek, Camden, later Kershaw County, South Carolina. Her mother's name is not known. As did all of William's children, Sarah dropped the O' from her surname. She married James ERWIN in 1777 in Camden District, South Carolina. They had twelve children.

Sarah's father, in his Will dated 4 November 1795, wrote "First I Give and bequeath to my Daughter Sarah IRWIN one Shilling Sterling."

NOTE:
Sarah DANIEL is wrongly assigned by some as the daughter of William DANIELL of Clarke County, Georgia, born 1743, a descendant of Robert Daniell (d. 1718 South Carolina). The error is found in various locations, including the records of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Annie Elizabeth Miller's book, Our Family Circle, published in 1931, may have been used as a source for the mistake or contributed to it. In reference to the two possible fathers of Sarah DANIEL that the book presents, it is important to note that she states "no proof has been submitted as to the truth of either claim." On page 486, in the chapter "House of Daniel", is this comment:
"Note--Two claims regarding Daniel ancestors are given below, although no proof has been submitted as to the truth of either claim.
First claim. Robert Daniel came from England to Barbados Island in 1697, then came to South Carolina, and in 1698 was made Landgrave. After becoming Governor of South Carolina, he was sent to North Carolina to straighten out affairs in that province. His son, Robert Daniel, Jr., lived in Camden District, S. C., near St. Stephen, and it is claimed that this Robert, Jr., was the father of William Daniel who married and had fourteen children, among them, Sarah, wife of James Erwin. (Note--No proof has been submitted so far that Sarah Daniel was a descendant of Governor Robert Daniel, although an Erwin descendant in Columbia, S. C., states she has seen the proof of this claim)
Among family data gathered by Robert Munro Erwin is a copy of a letter written June 5, 1907, by Mrs. A. E. Thompson of Blacksville, S. C., to Mrs. T. Grange Simons, of Charleston, S. C. In this letter Mrs. Thompson calls herself the granddaughter of Sem Daniel, and Mrs. Simons (Serena Aiken), a granddaughter of William Jr., Sem's brother. She states that William, Sr., had fourteen children, among them, William, Jr., Sem, Mary (Aunt Polly), Sarah, and Joseph."
Comments in parentheses in the quotes above are part of the author's text. The second paragraph is not specified as "second claim", but presents the alternative to the "Robert Daniel" claim and points directly to William O'DANIEL as Sarah's father. (See N.B. below on Robert Daniel.)
Annie Elizabeth Miller also included this comment on page 430 in her chapter on "House of Erwin":
"Sarah Daniel's name is spelled in the old Erwin Bible, Danielle, and history shows that the name of Gov. Daniel was written Daniel, Daniell, and Danielle." Its placement subtlely suggests that James ERWIN's wife was a descendant of Gov. Robert DANIELL of the Carolinas, but she is not.

Three records combine to prove William O'DANIEL is Sarah's father:
1. The Last Will & Testament of William O'DANIEL of White Oak Creek, Kershaw County, South Carolina, which names "Sarah IRWIN" and her O'DANIEL siblings, William, David, Josiah, Sem, James, and Mary (called Polly).
2. The 1850 census of Barnwell County, South Carolina (Series: M432 Roll: 849 Page 441) in which Mary WOOD (Aunt Polly), 75, resides in the household of her nephew, James Daniel ERWIN, son of James and Sarah Daniel ERWIN.
3. The 1860 census of Barnwell County (Series: M653 Roll: 1213 Page: 383) in which Mary WOOD (Aunt Polly), 85, resides in the household of her niece, Rebecca AYER, daughter of James ERWIN and Sarah DANIEL and wife of Lewis Malone AYER.
The two censuses support these comments in Our Family Circle that Mary, known as "Aunt Polly," is said to have had two children, presumably by Mr. WOOD. They are thought to have died young. Mr. WOOD is said to have become a drunkard who deserted Mary, after which, she lived with various members of her family.

Sarah Daniel ERWIN is buried beside her husband in Antioch Cemetery, in present day Allendale County, South Carolina, previously part of Barnwell County. Her memorial plaque reads:

SARAH DANIEL
WIFE OF
MAJOR JAMES ERWIN
BORN 1762
IN CAMDEN DISTRICT
DIED 1815

==============================

N.B.: Kenneth Daniell of Mableton, Georgia, descendant of Robert Daniell (d. 1718 South Carolina), provided this correction to the information:
- Robert Daniell, Sr. (d. 1718 South Carolina) did not travel from England to Barbados Island in 1697. He was already resident in South Carolina in 1677, possibly earlier.
- He became acting governor of North Carolina several years prior to being acting governor of South Carolina, not vice versa.
- Robert Daniell, Jr., did not live in Camden District, S. C. He lived near his father on Daniell Island, Berkeley County, near Charleston.
- Robert, Jr. had only two sons, Robert and Marmaduke. He could not possibly be the father of Robert, Sr.'s grandson William since Robert, Jr. died in 1709 or 1710, 33 years before the grandson William was born.
- William Daniell (b. 1743) was the son of John Daniell (b. 1707), who was the son of Robert, Sr. by his second wife. William Daniell was married twice and had a total of twenty children, not fourteen. He was not the father of Sarah Daniel, wife of James Erwin.

General Notes: Husband -

James THORNTON married first "Jennie" DANIEL cir 1891. Jennie is thought to be Sarah J., daughter of John A. and Sarah J. DANIEL. Before June 1900, James and Jenny had four children, Nora, Arthur, Robert, and Lizzie. James has an additional four children between 1900 and 1910, Emmline, Molly, Kate, and Pearl.

1900 U.S. Census, Georgia, Heard County, Franklin District 788, 11 June 1900; Series: T623 Roll: 204 Page: 88: 163 163 THORNTON James Head W M July 1866 33 M 8 GA GA GA Farmer; " Jennie Wife W M Mar 1873 M 8 4 4 GA GA GA; " Nora Dau W F Oct 1892 7 S GA GA GA; " Arthur Son W M Aug 1894 5 S GA GA GA; " Robert Son W M 3 S GA GA GA; " Lizzie Dau W F Jan 1898 1 GA GA GA.

In 1910, James is listed as a widow. He has four additional children, Emmaline, Molly, Kate and Pearl. Jennie died before 1910. Lee may also have died by then.

1910 U.S. Census, Georgia, Heard County, Texas Dist 761, 15 April 1910; Series: T624 Roll: 193 Page: 228: 17 18 THORNTON James Head M W 38 Wd GA US US Farmer; THORNTON Nora Dau F W 17 S GA GA GA; " Bob Son M W 14 S GA GA GA; " Lizzie Dau F W 12 S GA GA GA; " Emmaline Dau F W 10 S GA GA GA; " Mollie Dau F W 8 S GA GA GA; " Kate Dau F W 6 S GA GA GA (Did Jennie die giving birth To Kate?); " Pearl Dau F W 11/12 S GA GA GA (Daughter of second wife, Lee DANIEL? SUPPOSITION: "Jennie married Jim Thornton, Lee also married Jim Thornton after Jennie passed away." (Marlane Daniel) Lee DANIEL was Jennie's sister. Using this information and the 1910 census, it appears that Jennie may have died after giving birth to Kate about 1904. About five years later, Mar 1909, Pearl was born and James is listed as a widow in 1910. If Jennie died after Kate was born, Pearl would be the daughter of James and Lee; and Lee too had died before June 1910. Adding credence to this possibility is the fact that Golden DANIEL, age 4, thought to be a son of Lee, is named as James THORNTON's step-son in the 1910 census. Curiously, a Golden DANIEL, age 5, is also named as a grandson residing in the household of his grandfather, John A. DANIEL. Lee is not in either home.

In 1920 James THORNTON has moved to Troup County, Georgia and is married to Susie. Pearl, 11, is his youngest child. He has remarried to Susie, belived to be Susie C. WATTS, the widow of Earnest Lee HOOD. Susie's son Will HOOD is named with the family as "Son."

In 1930, Jim T. and Susie THORNTON lived in Mountville, Troup County, Georgia.

The Georgia, Death Index, 1933-1998 lists J. T. THORNTON died 18 April 1936 in Troup County, Georgia, Certificate Number: 12353.

Susie C. WATTS, widow of Earnest Lee HOOD, was the third wife of James T. THORNTON.

Susie WATTS, daughter of Mathew O. WATTS and Mary C. DANIEL married Earnest Lee HOOD, circa 1895. Their son, William HOOD was born about 1909. Will HOOD, 12, step-son, is listed as a son of Jim and Susie THORNTON in 1920.

Side note: Earl HOOD, 19, and May HOOD, 17, are boarders in the home of Ben THOMASON, 56, and wife Carrie, 46, located two homes away from Jim THORNTON in 1920.

General Notes: Wife -

Sarah J. DANIEL, a daughter of John A. and Sarah J. DANIEL, was age 6 in the 1880 census of Heard County, Georgia. She is believed to be "Jennie" DANIEL who married James THORNTON circa 1891.

In the 1900 census, Jennie, born March 1873, is named as the wife of James THORNTON. Her birth date here agrees closely with that of Sarah J. in 1880. She and James have four children, Nora, Arthur, Robert, and Lizzie, born 1898.

In 1910, James is listed as a widow. He has four additional children, Emmaline, Molly, Kate and Pearl. Jennie died before 1910. Lee may also have died by then.

About five year later, Mar 1909, Pearl was born and James is listed as a widow in 1910. Curiously, in 1910, a Golden DANIEL, age 5, is also named as a grandson residing in the household of his grandfather, John A. DANIEL. Lee is not in either home.

In 1920 James THORNTON has moved to Troup County, Georgia and is married to Susie. Pearl, 11, is his youngest child.

General Notes: Husband -

Sem DANIEL was born 30 Mar 1766, a son of William O'DANIEL. Sem later dropped the O' from his name, as did all of William's sons, but William, in his will, named his "sun" as Sem O'DANIEL and gave him one feather bed and furniture.

Sem DANIEL first married Ann ALLEN and second, Mary Agnes Elizabeth RICE, who became his widow.

"Sem & Mary Agnes Elizabeth Rice Daniels are my 4 great-grandparents." (Sybile Pierce, http://www.oldplaces.org/bamberg/vitals/sybile3.html)

"Sem DANIEL"?? Provided this is Sem, the enumeration fits his known family: Sem, about 24, wife Ann ALLEN, and a son born about 1789.

Some say that Sem married three times. That is understandable based on records which name his second wife as Elizabeth and his widow as Mary Agness; however, the research of Sybile McMillan Pierce states that Mary Agness and Elizabeth RICE were the same person.
"Sem DANIEL, 2nd ch. of William DANIEL, Sr., was b. 1758(?); received such education as he could get at that time in the country schools. He became a magistrate of that section of the country, and had ambition enough to give his children better advantages than he had had. Sem DANIEL mar. 3 times; lost the only ch. by the first marriage, and lost a son by the second. His third wife was the mother of 2 girls, one of whom became the mother of Mrs. A. E. THOMPSON [William Holman THOMSON], of Blacksville, S.C." ("Our family circle", p. 488)

Sem's two daughters were Mary R. DANIEL, born 1807, who married Charles W. RICE, and Elizabeth Jane DANIEL, born 1809, who married John William RUSH. The dates of Sem's marriages are undiscovered at this time.

Sem died in Barnwell County, South Carolina, leaving a will dated 1833 and recorded in 1837.

General Notes: Husband -

Stephen Augustus was a son of Stephen and Matilda H. DANIEL. He was born in South Carolina. His family moved from Edgefield District, South Carolina to Chambers County, Alabama between 1834 and 1836. His father died there between between 16 December 1839 and 6 March 1840. His family moved to Warren and Hinds County, Mississippi before 1850.

Before 1850, Matilda and her children moved to Warren and Hinds County, Mississippi. She is age 45, in the 1850 census of Vicksburg, Warren County, Mississippi. S. A. DANIELS [sic], 21, and his brother, Jesse B., 26, live together in Hinds County which borders Warren County. A sister, Emeline, born about 1827, lives with her mother. The three were born in South Carolina. Their births fit the age brackets of Matilda's family in the 1840 census of Chambers County, Alabama.

"At the close of the Civil War, Stephen Augustus Daniel brought his sisters to Freestone County to farm. He was born in Edgefield District, South Carolina September 9, 1829. He and his family lived awhile in Georgia and when a mere boy, he volunteered in the Mexican War of 1845; he was a member of Company A, First Reg., Georgia Vol. Infantry. He was also an ex-Confederate Veteran, and at one time served under Robert E. Lee... Finally the war ended and Stephen returned home. The South suffered such destruction and opportunities were so few that Stephen left S. Carolina once again. He headed for Texas and eventually settled in Freestone Co. A few months later, he married Jeffie Goodwin in Fairfield on March 1, 1868..." [Mrs. Bobby Daniel in History of Freestone County, Texas, Vol. 1, p. 335]

Walter H. (Watt) Daniel, born 1877, Binnsville, died 1945 in Tupelo, MS. He married:
(1) Eleanor Stuart, who has an interesting ancestry, descending from Dabney Carr of VA, Thomas Jefferson's friend and associate. They had one daughter, Sarah , who died unmarried, and was a very interesting person. She lived much of her life with her aunt---her mother's sister---Miss Mary Stuart. Both were school teachers who never married. They are buried side by side at the cemetery in Scooba.
(2) Nellis Hickerson. I have their descendants somewhere but will have to hunt. They are the only Daniel-surnamed descendants of Capt. Daniel. See "The Hills of Wilkes County, Georgia, and Allied Families" Volume 2, if you have access to it. It has quite a bit of other info on our lines.
[Gil Robison]

Watt married Eleanor C. STUART. Their daughter Sarah was born about 1905. Eleanor died 6 January 1907. "Ella C. STEWARD" in the above census may have been his wife. Mary D. STEWART in "Watt" DANIEL's household in 1910 appears to be Ella C.'s sister in the 1900 census, although her age should be about 31, not 23, assuming the 1900 age was correct.
