General Notes: Husband - Hodijah ELAM

Hodijah ELAM, born about 1804 in Virginia, first married Mary DAVENPORT on 28 January 1825 in Punam County, Georgia. Mary died in 1857. He married second Cartherine Eleanor BUTTS, widow of Francis C. BUTTS of Barbour County, Alabama, between 1860 and 1870.

Will of Hodijah Elam
Georgia )
Sumter County ) - In the name of God Amen. I Hodija(sic) Elam, of the County and State aforesaid Being of advanced age yet of a sound disposing mind & memory, deem it right & proper as it respects my family and myself, that I should make a disposition of the property which a kind providence has blessed me, do hereby make this my last will and testament hereby revoking all others heretofore made by me.
1st Item I devise & direct that my body be buried in a decent and Christian like manner suitable to my circumstances & conditions in life. My soul I trust shall return to rest with God who gave it, as I hope for eternal salvation through the merits & atonement of the blessed Lord & Savior Jesus Christ.
2nd Item I desire and direct that all my just debts be paid without delay by my Executrix hereinafter appointed.
3rd Item I will bequeath & devise to my beloved wife Catherine J. Elam the house & lot in which I now live in the City of Americus, bounded as follows to wit on the west by Mrs Publes lot, on the north by the street running between Dr. S. B. Hawkins residence lot & my residence lot, on the east Mr Pughs & on the south by Frances Grahams lot, with all the rights members & appurtenances thereto in any wise appertaining or belonging together with all the household & kitchen Furniture of every nature character & kind on or belonging to said premises & also all other personal property of every character or kind belonging or appertaining to Said premises.
4th Item In addition to the above Legacy I will & bequeath to my beloved wife Catherine J Elam one thousand dollars in money to be paid her out of the first money raised or collected out of my Estate from sales, collections or otherwise after the payment of my just debts.
5th Item I will and bequeath that all my Estate both real and personal except the House & Lot herebefore described, be sold at public sale after giving such notice of sale as is now required by law in cases of Administors, & my Executrix is hereby empowered with said authority to sell without the necessity of having to apply to the Court of Ordinary for leave to sell & she is authorized to use her discretion as to the time of sale so as to look to the best interest of the estate & at the same time not to protract the winding up of said estate; And after paying all my just debts & the specific legacies hereinbefore specified: that all the balance of whatever nature, kind or character, whether of realty, [unclear] or mixed estate or the proceeds thereof after sale be equally divided between my two sons Calvin D. Elam & George Elam.
It is much to my regret that my Estate is not sufficient to leave a bequest to each of my children but my estate being so small to divide it out among so many would do each but little good and I feel bound to provide for my beloved wife by whom I received an Estate, & the little remainder of my estate I thought it right and just to leave to my two sons Calvin and George, as they have assisted me a great deal in my business and worked with me in the management of the same & in persuance of a promise heretofore made them I have made the above bequest. It would afford me great pleasure if I knew my children could look at the matter as I do & be content with the same under circumstances as above expressed.
6th Item I hereby constitute and appoint my beloved wife Catherine J. Elam Executrix of this my last will and testament.
Hodija[sic] Elam
Signed Sealed and declared and published by Hodija Elam as his last will & testament in the presence of us the subscribing witnesses who subscribed our names hereto in the presence of the testator at his special instance & request & in the presence of each other this 10th day of August 1875.

General Notes: Husband - Barna IVEY

Other than friends and neighbors, was there a family relationship to the descendandants of Willian and Frances O'DANIEL of Stafford County, Virginia?

In Ivey Cemetery, Russell County, Alabama, where Barna IVEY is buried, are also the graves of James Levi DANIELL, his wife, Elizabeth Clements BUTTS, James Levi's mother, Martha Pearson Cook Daniell DANIEL, Francis C. BUTTS and wife Catherine DANIELL, d/o J. L. and E. C. DANIELL.

In addition, the Barna was in Baldwin County, Georgia and appears to have moved to Barbour/Russell County, Alabama at the same time LJames Levi and family did.

The Barna Ivey Family is presented in "Children of Robert Ivey Jr. & Elizabeth West", a well footnoted file at
http://www.genfiles.com/ivey/iveyrobert2children.htm, homepage: http://www.genfiles.com/ by Bob Baird.

"Barna Ivey (22 September 1795 - 21 November 1856) He appears in many records as Barney Ivey, but usually signed his own name as "Barna Ivey", and his name appears as "Barna Ivey" in the Bible record mentioned below. His full given name is somewhat uncertain. A grandson's biographical sketch published in 1893 calls him "Barnabus Ivey". The family Bible in the family of one of his daughters, called the Ivey-Garland Bible, contains his birth, death and marriage dates, along with his parents, his children and other Davis and Garland relatives. According to this record, he married Alcy Ann Davis (9 December 1800 \endash 14 November 1886) on 12 December 1816, a time when the family was still living in Lenoir County. She was the daughter of Malachi Davis and Ann Wooten, according to a court case in Duplin County, North Carolina which calls her "Elsie" Ivey. A Davis family history contains more information on the Malachi Davis family.
Barna Ivey and his wife moved with his father to Baldwin County, Georgia and is on the same list of Camp Creek Baptist Church members in 1817. A newspaper notice of 20 July 1819 says he was living on Camp Creek, 10 miles from Milledgeville. He appears as head of household in Baldwin County in 1820. In 1830 Barney Ivy appears in Houston County, apparently with his mother-in-law and some of her children in the household. Note that his son James Washington Ivey claimed to have been born in Houston County in 1831 (see below). Further, his son Malachi Ivey's 1893 biography states that his father "lived in Houston and Troup Counties then removed to Alabama…" The above-referenced statement by John B. Garland says Barna Ivey moved to Russell County, Alabama in 1836, while the obituary of his daughter Elizabeth (see below) gives the date as 1837. (Note that all the children through Josephine, born 1836, give their birthplace as Georgia in later censuses.) He is in the 1840 census of Russell County with five sons and three daughters in the household. As a Russell County resident in 1843 he and several Davis relatives gave a power of attorney to his brother-in-law Windell Davis back in Duplin County. In 1850 he was enumerated in Barbour County, Alabama but by the 1855 state census was in Macon County. He is listed as owner of 30 slaves in the 1855 Macon County slave census. A separate North Carolina record also identifies him as a Macon County resident in 1856. According to Malachi Ivey's statement, his father died in Macon County. Indeed Barna Ivey's will, dated 8 November 1856, was proved there. He is perhaps buried, however, in Barbour County. A gravestone, apparently installed in more modern times, marks his grave in Barbour County, though the year of birth on the stone is three years earlier than the year given in the family Bible and predates his parents marriage. His widow is in the 1860 census of Macon County and in the 1870 and 1880 census of Russell County, where she died in 1886 according to the Bible. The eldest son stated in 1893 (see below) that his parents had five sons and seven daughters, and Elizabeth Ivey Denson's obituary calls her one of twelve children, though the Ivey-Garland Bible lists birth dates for only eleven children. The omitted child was Robert Ivey, who apparently died during the Civil War. Note that the 1820 census suggests one additional son born before1820, who apparently died in infancy." General Notes: Husband - David W. DAVIS

"D. W. Davis, a brother of John M. Davis, whose sketch appears in this work, and a relative of Jeff. Davis, is a son of Cornelius Davis, the latter having come to Arkansas from Kentucky, his former home, in 1828.
At that time the Territory was but thinly settled, the forests were filled with bear, deer, wild turkey and other game, and the mode of traveling was in or carts or on horseback. Our subject was reared to farm life, but had no advantages for acquiring an education when a boy, and it is a fact that, up to his eighteenth birthday, he could neither read nor write.
He was born in this county December 9, 1833. In 1851 he ran away from home, and went to Fulton County, Ill., where he attended school for three years, working for his board and enough to keep him in clothes. Then returning home he commenced teaching school, and in that way earned means to take him through college, after which he took a course in civil engineering at the McKendrie College. Subsequently he went to Leavenworth, Kan., and took part in the border warfare in Missouri and Kansas. Becoming located at Omaha, he was engaged in his profession of surveying a short time, but later returned to St. Francis County, and in 1857-58 held the position of deputy sheriff.
At the breaking out of the war he enlisted in the Crittenden Rangers, the first company raised in Arkansas. A few months later he helped Marsh Walker raise his regiment, of which he was made captain and commissary. After the war Mr. Davis came home and commenced farming, and also took up the study of law, afterward entering upon his practice, but soon again abandoned the legal profession and resumed farming. This he still follows, and is also engaged in surveying, in addition being timber inspector of the Third district, comprising St. Francis, Cross and Poinsett Counties.
He has the credit of sending in more money than any other inspector in the State. He has a fine farm, with over 100 acres under cultivation, upon which are good buildings and a fine orchard. His principal crop is cotton, but does not confine himself to that one product as do some. He has also tried introducing thoroughbred short-horned cattle, but the country is not yet educated up to seeing the value of fancy stock.
Mr. Davis was married in 1863 to Mrs. McClintock. They are the parents of five children: Blanche (wife of James W. Steward, who was superintendent of the public schools for ten years), De Witt (nineteen years of age and who is studying surveying, of which he has a practical knowledge, having at the State Fair at Little Rock competed and taken the prize for the best plat of a thirty-two sided farm and architectural drawings), Annie, David and Mabel.
Mr. Davis and wife are members of the Episcopal Church. He is also a member of the Knights of Honor, and is a strong Democrat."
Lisa Hamilton submitted the above data from Goodspeed's, 1884; she did so to help others, is not researching the above person or families mentioned therein.

CONFLICTING INFORMATION, OR ANOTHER LYNCH AND Eliza DAVIS?
"John Carrol Lynch was born on a farm which was then in St. Francis County, now a part of Lee County, in 1848, being a son Byant Lynch, who was born in this State in 1818, and Eliza (Davis) Lynch, of Kentucky origin, born in 1825. The principal of this sketch has spent his whole life in this county, but as his help was needed on his father's farm, his educational advantages in youth were very limited. He was married, in 1873, to Miss Lou A. Rogers, who was the mother of two daughters, one, Annie L., still living. Mr. Lynch owns 1,400 acres of land, 700 acres of which are cleared and a large part of it under cultivation. He raises very little cotton, but devotes most of his time and labor to the raising of stock, which he finds more profitable. He is a life-long Democrat and uses all means in his power to advance the interests of his party. He is a member of the Masonic order. His wife belongs to the Baptist Church. Mr. Lynch is one of the prominent and well-known men of Lee County. He has never had a sick day in ten years, nor taken a dose of medicine in that time, and during the last ten years he has increased in weight from 156 to 254 pounds. Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Eastern Arkansas" p. 608 (http://www.couchgenweb.com/arkansas/lee/biog-lee.htm)

"Among the early settlers of the territory now embraced in this county, was John Patterson, who died quite recently at the advanced age of eighty-six, in a little enclosure, about one and a half miles from Marianna. He rests beside six of his wives and twenty of his children, who preceded him to the spirit land, and since his death his seventh wife has followed him. Among other pioneers were David Wills, a native of Rhode Island; James Wilson, of Missouri; Ridley Myrich, Owen Myrich, Charles Ewen, John Dillard and E. K. James, all of Tennessee; David Davis, of Kentucky, who came in 1829; A. G. McDaniel, of Kentucky, who came in 1824; Green E. Story, of Missouri; Middleton Hensley and Washington Hensley, of Indiana; also Larkin Meeks, of the same State; Thomas Adams, of Kentucky; J. Lee and Hiram Dunn, of Virginia; Andrew Dunnski, Obadiah Roberts, John Griffin and Absalom Lowrey came prior to 1829; John Lynch, Matthew Smith, William Smith and Cyrus Lyttle. In 1829 there were not to exceed forty families in the county. (p, 568) (http://www.couchgenweb.com/arkansas/lee/biog-lee.htm)

The 1880 Census shows Orline as "M. O." DAVIS, living with her husband H.D. DAVIS, their children, Edmond 7, Edna 5, and Willie 3, and Orline's mother, D. J. (Matthews Marsh) KNIGHTON.
"I think Orline got her name from that riverboat that created such a fuss in Wilcox County (AL) when it sank in 1848." (Linda Marsh)
"One of the grandest (steamboats) of all, the Orline St. John, caught fire and sank off Gee's Bend in 1850. A slave named Abram swam out and saved nine men, who were carried with other survivors to the Big House, a makeshift hospital that day. Scores drowned, however. At least one was laid to rest in Camden." (http://www.geneseo.edu/~bennett/GEEBEND.htm)
"William Harris had found the wreck of the Orline St. John. That was 1954. The Orline St. John had gone down over a century earlier, March of 1850, victim of one of those fires that always threatened steamboats. No one knows how many died, but every woman and child on board perished." (http://www.annistonstar.com/opinion/2005/as-insight-0216-hhjacksoncol-5b15w3631.htm)

General Notes: Husband - Sheriff John M. DAVIS

John M. DAVIS was born 14 July 1845 in Lewis County, Kentucky according to the research of William C. HALBERT, deceased. The 1900 census provides John an alternate birth date of July 1848. John's family was in St. Francis County before 1840 and censuses consistantly show his birth to be in Arkansas.

1870 U.S. Census, Arkansas, St. Francis County, Franks Twp; Series: M593 Roll: 65 Page: 401: DAVIS, John M. 24 M W Farmer 2520 1200 AR; Mary A. 21 F W K. H. AR; Clarence 10/12 F (sic) W AR; FOLEY Mary J. 51 F W MA; Kate 12 F W AR; Sarah ____ 19 F W TN.

Biography: "DAVIS, JOHN M. John M. Davis is numbered among the well-known farmers and stock raisers of Franks Township. He was born on the farm on which he still lives, in 1845. His parents Cornelius and Eliza (Holbert) Davis, were natives of Kentucky. The former came to Arkansas in 1828, and remained one year, then returning to Kentucky, where he was married in 1832, moving permanently to this county, and engaging in farming. At that time the country was very thinly settled, the nearest market being Helena. He first entered 160 acres of land, but at the time of his death, in 1868, at the age of sixty-three years, owned 600 or 700 acres. John M. Davis grew to manhood on his father's farm, his early educational opportunities being limited, as the senior Davis was one of those men who believed in acquiring a competency before spending it. When eighteen years old John went to Kentucky, and attended school for about two years. After the war, in which he did not take part on account of poor health, he returned to Arkansas and resumed farming, and is now conducting the old homestead which his father entered and improved on coming to this State, and where he was born. Mr. Davis has been twice united in the bonds of matrimony. First, in 1868, to Mary C. Folbre, who died in 1871, leaving one son, Thomas C., who was killed in a railroad wreck in 1887. Mr. Davis took for his second wife Miss Hester A. Davis, in January, 1874, a daughter of Rev. Arthur Davis, of Western Tennessee. They are the parents of ten children: Benjamin, Arthur W., Mattie P., Drucilla, John, Susie, Eliza, Myrtle, Claudia and Elizabeth. Mr. Davis is one of the most prominent Democrats of this locality, and is now the efficient sheriff of St. Francis County, and a man whose name is a terror to law breakers. He and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Mr. Davis is also connected with the Masonic order. Lisa Hamilton submitted the above data from Goodspeed's, 1884; she did so to help others, is not researching the above person or families mentioned therein. http://www.arkansasfamilies.net/afamstfranjdavis.htm" (http://www.angelfire.com/va3/izzynet3/LETTERD.html)

John's wife, Mary A. FOLBRE died in 1871, leaving John with a son, Thomas Clarence. John remarried in January 1874 to Hester A. DAVIS of Tennessee. Benjamin was the first of ten children by Hester.
