Dr. O.G. Eiland
Obituary
Dr. O.G. Eiland, died at his residence, near Scooba, Miss., January 25, 1877, was born in Hancock County, Georgia, December 25, 1806, was reared in Perry County, Ala., and educated at Athens, Georgia. Was married to Mary Hatcher, daughter of Colonel James Hatcher, of Dallas County, Ala., in 1835.
Dr. Eiland was a man of strong individuality and somewhat peculiar characteristics. He was a man of strong native intellect, nice sensibilities, fine general culture and splendid acquirements in his profession, which he practiced in Marion, Ala., for the first decade of his professional life with eminent success; was one of the founders and first trustees of the celebrated Judson Institute of Marion, Ala.(Judson still is a prestigious female college) )Becoming involved by security and otherwise, he lost his fortune in the crash of 1838-40; moved to Lauderdale County, Miss., in 1845, where, in a few years, by a very large and successful practice of his profession, he laid the foundation of another fortune, most of which was swept away by the late war.(War Between The states)
Dr. Eiland was twice married, losing his first wife in 1852; was married to Miss Mary Dabbs, of DeKalb, Miss., in 1856, who survives him. He had ten children, six of whom are living, had been a member of the Baptist Church for thirty years, and died in the Saviour whom he had so long worshipped.

General Notes: Husband -
John HOOE and Hoson HOOE, Jr. were named to the Committee of Safety organized in December 1774 at Dumfries, Virginia. This was all in prelude to prepare for the coming Revolutionary War against England. (pg 31).
"The first specific reference to a schoolhouse in Prine William occurs before 1755 in an old order book and refers to a school near the present site of Buckhall. 'On motion of Howson HOOE, Gent.' it was ordered that Joseph BUCHANAN, Abrham RAW, and George REEVES 'decide upon the most convenient road to be made from the schoolhouse where Wm. BARR formerly taught to Bull Run.'" (pg 58)
"In 1838 James HOOE, the son of Howson HOOE III, willed Moor Green to his sister Jane, who in turn passed it on to her husband Redmon FOSTER. In 1860 James L. FOSTER owned the plantation, which at that time included 568 acres." (Pg 117)
"At 2.4m from Manassas on County 615 is the SITE OF MAYFIELD (L). Until a few yers ago the walls of what was once a square stone house, built in the late eighteenth or nineteenth century, were still standing. Nathaniel HARRIS received in 1717 the original patent to this land, then known as "Buckhele." His daughter, Ann Frances, became the wife of Howson HOOE, who died in 1780. The first of the HOOEs to reach America was Rice, who ws born in 1599. He settled in what became Charles City County; in 1632 he was Burgess from Shirley Hundred and later a Burgess from Charles City County. His son, Rice HOOE II, settled in Westmoreland, and hids grandson Rice HOOE III, father of Howson HOOE, established himself in the Chotank community in Stafford and built Barnsfield as his seat. There he began to operate in 1713 one of the first feries to cross the Potomac - "from Colonel Rice HOE's to Cedar Point, in Maryland,' where a new bridge is now being built across the river (1940). In 1751 Howson and Ann Frances HOOE gave the land upon which Mayfield stood to their sons Howson and John, the former then living on the estate. Other sons of Howson and Ann Frances were William, Harris, and Bernard J. HOOE of Hazel Plain. The part of the HARRIS tract that was left to John HOOE passed to his son Bernard, whom William KEMP killed in a duel in 1809. Bernard had purchased from Thomas Blackburn in 1800 a small part of the Yorkshire farm and had acquired other property in the vicinity. Amoung the bequests to his wife, Mary Simms HOOE, was his share of the original HARRIS patent; to John he left his home site of 150 acres between Rushy Branch and Bull Run. The tragic duel had its origin just before William KEMP started on a western trip. It seems that young HOOE used abusive language, to which KEMP retorted. HOOE struck his neighbor with a whip, and KEMP got the better of HOOE ina physical struggle that followed. The duel forthwith took place on the Maryland shore. HOOE is said to have died at Rippon Lodge. The second Howson HOOE was a vestryman of Dittingen Parish and sheriff and justice of Prince William.
Afew hundred feet northeast of the place where the house once stood is the family burying ground, in which the legends of old stones are not legilbe. Among the inscriptions that can be read are those to Robert H. HOOE (1772-1832), Mary HOOE (1761-1802), Sarah HOOE (1794-1795), Nellie N. METZ (1877-1881), Mathias HOOE (1799-1825), Virginia HOOE (1805-1887), Susan C. HOOE, John HOOE (1793-1873), Edmonia B. HOOE (1850-1887), Maggie Wallace HOOE (1857-1900), and Hettie B. V. TROTT (1831-1872). (pg. 145-6)

Possible husband of Artemisia DANIEL in the 1840 census: 1830 U.S. Census, Chester County; Series: M019 Roll: 169 Page 337: L. DANIEL two males under 5, one male 30-40, one female under 5, one female 20-30.
General Notes: Wife -
There are two possibilities for Artemisia DANIEL who may be the daughter of David and Mary Muldoon DANIEL. Jerri Hall writes: "Her father (or father-in-law?) was David DANIEL. He calls her his daughter in his will, but sometimes that term was also used for widowed daughters in law...I have not been entirely satisfied that Artemisia was married until her later known marriage to Isaac ALLEN." This opens the other possibility that Artemisia was an unwed mother living in her father's household.
Now the questions: Who fathered Artemisia's sons William B., Thomas A., and John L. DANIEL born before 1840? If an Unknown DANIEL, was Artemisia's maiden name DANIEL or something else? More research required.
After the death of David DANIEL, as one of his heirs, Artemisia was involved in two property transactions. On 23 July 1832, Mary Ann DANIEL for "the natural love and affection which I bear unto Reuben DENNIS, John POLK, C S CLINE & Artemisia DANIEL" gives them all her property at her decease. Wit: Joseph FERGUSON, Henry LEE. Recorded 1 October 1832. (Z60). On the same date, Reuben DENNIS, John POLK, C S CLINE & Artemisia DANIEL obligate themselves for a $400 bond, the condition of which is that Mary Ann DANIEL may occupy the 112 acres where she lives during her natural life, the property at the expiration of that time to return to the legatees specified in the will of David DANIEL. If any one of them should forfeit the bond, he is liable to pay it alone. All four signed. Wit: Joseph FERGUSON, Henry Lee. Recorded 27 November 1832. (Z77). Mary Ann DANIEL died about 1839.
Assuming Artemisia was first married to a DANIEL, he probably was deceased by 1840 when Atermasiah (sic) Daniel was listed for the first time as head of household in Chester District. The 1840 U.S. Census, South Carolina, Chester County; Series: M704 Roll: 510 Page: 302 lists "Atemesiah DANIEL" who has three boys, one, 0-5, and two 5-10, and one girl 10-15. This is a duplicate of the "Mesiah DANIEL" in York Co. (Explained by Jerri Hall as an anomaly that Mesiah lived on or near the county line and was enumerated in both.)(Note: a comparison of names around "Atemesiah" and "Mesiah" on the two census pages reveal no other duplicate entries. RLD)
1840, York Co., "Mesiah DANIEL", 30-40, with 3 boys: one under 5, one 5-10, and one, 10-15; and one girl 5-10, lives 15 homes away and is named on the same page as J. H. ABERNATHY and "Mrs. DANIEL". She is thought to be Artemisia DANIEL, daughter of David DANIEL and Mary MULDOON. James Harvey ABERNATHY was the father of William Calhoun ABERNATHY who married Mary Emma DANIEL before 1875. Mary Emma was d/o William B. DANIEL and Elizabeth WYLIE, the widow of Henry Fuller WHITE. William B. is s/o Artemisia DANIEL and Unknown. Artemisia is thought to be d/o David and Mary Muldoon DANIEL. She is named in David's Will. Was she a daughter who married another DANIEL or a widowed daughter-in-law? (as asked by Jerri Hall). There are four children in her household: a girl 10-15 years (Helen Alice?); and three boys, presumed to be her sons, two 5-10 years (William & Thomas) and one under 5 years (John). Hellen Alice DANIEL, born about 1827, who married James Harvey ABERNATHY about 1842, is believed to be Artemesia's daughter, 10-15, in this census.
In the 1840 U.S. Census, South Carolina, York County; Series: M704 Roll: 516 Page 319, "Mesiah DANIEL", 30-40, is head of household With her are 3 boys: one under 5, one 5-10, and one, 10-15; and one girl 5-10. She is named on the same page as J. H. ABERNATHY and his next door neighbor, a "Mrs. DANIEL". Mrs. DANIEL, 15 houses away from "Mesiah", is with two males, 15-20, on girl, 15-20, and herself, 50-60.
By the mid-1840's, Artemisia DANIEL had married Isaac A. ALLEN. In the 1850 and 1860 census records, she is listed as his wife with both Daniel and Allen children in the family. Her Allen children were Julia A., Isaac Halcot and Theodore Middleton ALLEN. Their two oldest children died in their late teens. As late as 1870 Middleton ALLEN was still living in the home with his parents, indicating that he may have married after that time." (Jerri Hall)
Artemisia's son, Isaac H. ALLEN is named as "ALLEN, I. H., 1846 - 1864" on the Confederate Monument, Erected by the Neely's Creek Church Cemetery Association, August 22, 1993 (York County, SC).

Absalom EILAND was a son of George and Sarah James(?) EILAND of Virginia and North Carolina. Absalom is said to be his eldest son. George claimed a wife and four children in his petition for land in South Carolina on 3 October 1749, proving his children were born before that date. That being true and the four children being Absalom, John, Isaiah, and James, Absalom may have been born about 1740, probably in Princess Anne County, Virginia or Currituck Precinct, North Carolina as the provinces' border bisected his father's property. If born after 1745, he may have been born in Johnston County, North Carolina.
Absalom's name is found in various spellings: Absalom, Absolom, Absolem, Absolum, etc.
The Compendium of American Genealogy, Vol. III, Eiland, Lineage Records, pg 447, lists "5-Absolom (b bet. 1750-55-1814), served with Ga. troops in Am. Rev.; received a grant of 2871/2 acres in Washington Co., 1785; deacon Bapt. Church of N. Buffalo Creek; moved to Jones C.; m. 1775, Nancy Anne Daniel? (1753-1839)[sic]" Absalom is shown a son of George and grandson of Richard EILAND of North Carolina.
"here is something to ponder on concerning the pronunciation of Eiland. There is evidence that it was not only pronounced eye-land and ee-land but also ay-land (probably the earliest pronunciation) and el-land and I find newer spellings every day. Ailand and Ellaund are two recent examples to add to Eiland, Eyland, Eland, Elant, Elland, Ealand, Iland, Illand, and Island, all from the same original family in West Yorkshire!" (Raydon Eiland Alexander, raydon@gvtc.com)
Records prove that Absalom was in South Carolina from 1754 until 1778, but there are contradicting postings about where and whom Absolom EILAND married in 1775, in either Fairfield County, South Carolina or Johnston County, North Carolina. It is generally accepted that he married Ann "Nancy" DANIEL, born 1753, said to be the daughter of James DANIELL of Fairfield County, South Carolina., but there is a remembrance published in Southern Letters and Life in the Mid 1800s by Susan Lott Clark that his wife was Ann CARR; however, Absalom and Ann's descendants carry the given names Levi and Daniel in their lines. Levi DANIELL was the youngest son of James DANIELL of Fairfield County. The name Carr is not used by their descendants.
The information below is from a paper written by Cecil Little, deceased, of Clanton, Alabama . He sent it to Jere Fletcher of Tyler, Texas in March 1995 who kindly shared it. [Note: Errors have been found in parts of this paper. No record has been found to support the purported marriage of James DANIEL of Fairfield County, South Carolina to a Nancy SANKEY or a record of the marriage of Ann Sankey DANIEL, to Absalom EILAND occurring in Fairfield County, South Carolina. RLD]
Mr. Little wrote:
"One will discover many names repeated in the various Eiland Family units. "Daniel" comes from the maiden name of the Wife of Absalom EILAND. She was Nancy Ann DANIEL. Nancy had a favorite brother named Levi DANIEL, so she and Absalom named a Son born 1791 Levi Daniel EILAND. Absalom's Son, Enoch EILAND, named his first Son born 1802 John Daniel EILAND then his Grandson Zachariah named a Son John Daniel EILAND."
(Later paragraph)
"Absalom EILAND, Son of George EILAND, married Nancy Ann DANIEL about 1775 in South Carolina. She is believed to have come from Fairfield County, S.C. Absalom is listed as a petit juror in Orangeburg District, S.C. in 1777 and 1778. Absalom EILAND was in Wilkes Co., Ga. by 1779, as he later filed a claim for loss due to Indian raids in that year. Absalom also served as a Revolutionary Soldier in Ga., and is included in the D.A.R. Patriot Index. He was given grant No. 259 for 287 1/2 acres in Washington Co., Ga., June 28, 1785. This tract was crossed by Island Creek. This land touched land of his Brother John EILAND and of his Brother Isaiah EILAND both Brothers award [sic] land for having served as Revolutionary War Soldiers."
(Two paragraphs later)
"Absalom EILAND's Wife was the Daughter of James DANIEL and Nancy Sankey DANIEL. Absalom and Nancy Anne EILAND named a Son for her Favorite Brother, Levi DANIEL."
(A later paragraph)
"Levi Daniel EILAND was born 1791. He was named for his Mother's favorite Bro. Levi DANIEL who died in Jones Co., Ga., 1800. Levi Daniel [EILAND] married Miss Katie SHAW. He served as a Justice of Peace in Old Montgomery Co., Ala. when the County included present Bullock County and additional area. Levi Daniel [EILAND] died 1872."
(Note: Levi DANIELL/L, said to be Ann DANIEL's brother is a proven son of James DANIELL/L of Fairfield County, South Carolina. Levi died in 1800 in Hancock County, Georgia. Jones County did not exist in 1800; it was Indian Territory. RLD)
Records establish the presence of Absalom's father, George EILAND, in South Carolina before 13 May 1754 when George EILAND obtained a land grant in South Carolina. An Absalom MILAND* obtained land there in 1770 and the name Absalom EILAND is on two Lease and Release Deeds in 1775, increasing the possibility that Absalom was married in South Carolina. *The original spelling of this name on the land plat is "Absalom HIGHLAND" but the GH is lined out. "MILAND" appears to be added later, a transcriber's addition?

Thomas GREEN had previously purchased these 350 acres from William NICHOLS who had purchased the land from Absalom's father, George, in 1755. Thomas was unable to register a title to the land because William failed to record and was unable to produce the titles he received from George EILAND. CONFLICTS!
Absalom EILAND married an Ann DANIEL said born 1753 and married in Fairfield County, SC or born and married in Johnston County, NC. James DANIEL/LL may have married Ann SANKEY before 1753 and resided in Craven/Camden,/Fairfield, SC. The conflict is that James DANIELL's widow was not Ann SANKEY as claimed by some, but Nancy HARDWICK. James' son Levi DANIELL named "my step-mother Nancy DANIELL" in his LW&T of 1800. Several web sites and posts claim Ann "Nancy" SANKEY as the widow of James DANIEL, d. 1797 or 1798 in Hancock County, Georgia. James DANIELL of Fairfield County, SC was James O'DANIEL of Fairfax County, Virginia, born 1721 to William and Frances O'DANIEL. He migrated to SC before 1754 when he petitioned land citing a wife and two children. (Note: this marriage and these two children are NOT in transcriptions of James' Bible, but then neither is James' second marriage to Nancy HARDWICK, nor any children by her, possibly two.) James obtained land in Green and Washington counties, Georgia starting in 1784. He is listed on the 1790 census of Fairfield District, South Carolina, afterwards moving to his land now in the newly created Hancock County, Georgia where he wrote his Will in 1797 and died before March 1798. The Will did not mention a daughter Ann or the name EILAND. This "James DANIELL of Fairfield County, South Carolina" did buy Absalom's 287 acres in Greene County, Georgia in 1787. James' son, Levi DANIELL, named in James' Will, witnessed the deed. Curiously, Absalom and Ann Daniel EILAND have a son, Levi Daniel EILAND, b. 1791. The coincidences of Ann being possibly married in, or being from, Fairfield Co., SC; Fairfield being the homestead of James DANIELL in 1754; the purchase of Absalom EILAND's bounty by James; and their both residing in the vicinity of Greene/Hancock/Baldwin/Jones counties increase the possibility that Ann may be James' daughter. Conceivably, an Ann SANKEY may have been the mother of all James' children (first named in the Bible was Jesse, born 2 Dec 1754, and last in Bible was Mary, born 20 Feb 1765). James first wife probably died before 1775. James widow, his second wife, Nancy HARDWICK was born 1758, and was five years younger than the Ann DANIEL who married Absalom. Nancy HARDWICK's marriage to James, circa 1775 may have been both the timing and reason for Ann DANIEL, if a daughter if James of Fairfield, to leave home and marry Absalom. After James' death in 1798, Nancy Hardwick DANIELL remarried to James BARROW of Baldwin County. This is the Nancy who died 18 Jan 1814 in Baldwin County, not Nancy Ann SANKEY.
Note: There is a (Nancy) Ann Daniel SANKEY in Greene County, Georgia before 19 July 1815. She is Ann Thompson Daniel SANKEY, widow of John T. SANKEY, d. 1813, and daughter of James DANIEL and Ann THOMPSON of Greene County who migrated from Virginia. This Nancy Ann Daniel SANKEY remarried to Drury TOWNS on 17 October 1814. The following records relate to her father, deceased husband, and second husband.
July 19, 1815 "Georgia, Greene County. Court of Ordinary, July Term, 1815. Upon the petition of James DANIEL and Drury TOWNS (in right of his wife) administrators of the estate of John T. SANKEY, deceased, praying to be dismissed from the administration of said estate... (Signed) Ebenezer TORRENCE, C.C.O.")
An additional abstract in follow up concerning the estate of John T. SANKEY: February 7, 1816: "By order of the...Court of Ordinary of Greene County, will be sold on the first Tuesday in March next at the town of Greensborough, one tract of land containing 700 acres, lying on the road leading from Greensbrough to Washington...being part of the real estate of John T. SANKEY, deceased...(Signed) James DANIEL, Adm'r., Drury TOWNS, Adm 'r. in right of his wife."
COMMENT: We are dealing with two individuals named James DANIEL in the same vicinity, one died 1798 in Hancock County, the other living in Greene County, both with wife named Nancy and another with a sister Ann who married John Thompson SANKEY, apparently causing confusion in the identifications of Nancy HARDWICK DANIELL and Ann Thompson DANIEL SANKEY TOWNS.
General Notes: Wife -
CIRCUMSTANTIAL EVIDENCE strongly suggests, but does not decisively prove, that Ann DANIEL, 1753-1839, who married Absalom EILAND, is a daughter of James DANIELL of Fairfield County, South Carolina. Location, interaction, and inter-family names are compelling. The case for Ann being James' daughter is presented below.
It is worth noting that Ann Daniel EILAND has not been found attached to any other DANIELL or DANIEL line of descent.
Any assistance, correction, or additional information are welcome and appreciated.

Based on the premise that Absalom EILAND's wife, Ann "Nancy" DANIEL born between 1750 and 1753, was James' daughter, she was probably born in Fairfax County, Virginia, where James was located in the early 1750s. The 1830 census of Middlebrook, Jones County, Georgia, page 450, enumerates Nancy EILAND's household and provides her age range as 70-80, born between 1750-1760.
James DANIELL of Fairfield County, South Carolina, was born James O'DANIEL in Stafford County, Virginia in 1721. He migrated from Fairfax County, Virginia to South Carolina about 1754 and died in Hancock County, Georgia in 1798. In records, he is often found as James DANIEL.
On 2 April 1754, James DANIEL claimed a wife and two children in his petition for a land grant to the South Carolina Council. The names of his wife and these children have not been found. Ann's birth in 1753 fits this record.
Was James' wife, the mother of Ann, named Ann? Or was it Elizabeth? In the Historical Collections of the Georgia Chapters Daughters of the American Revolution, Volume IV, page 12, a transcript of James DANIEL's Bible, said to be in possession of Mrs. D. F. Barrow, Athens, Georgia, states "James DANIEL was the first husband of Mrs. James Barrow, wife of James Barrow of Milledgeville, Ga. BIRTHS: Children of James DANIEL and wife Ann" "Jesse .....12-2-1754" is the first child listed. Other transcripts do not list "wife Ann." Attempts to verify the transcript have failed. James' Bible is said to have been donated to the University of Georgia Library by the James BARROW family. So far, despite personal visits and internet lookup requests, the university's Hargrett Rare Book & Manuscript Library has not been able to find James' Bible. A Mitchell family file there lists "Elizabeth" as James wife.
No record has been found to confirm the marriage of Absalom EILAND to Ann DANIEL of Fairfield County; however land records show the EILAND and DANIELL families in proximity from which they may have known each other or allowed Absalom and Ann to become acquainted.
Absalom EILAND was in South Carolina as early as 1749 when his father, George obtained a 350 acre land grant on the North side of the Santee (Congaree) River, bounded North by John BOWLES' land near Butler Creek.
On 5 May 1754, George claimed improvements to his 350 acres and pleaded poverty for failing to record the grant "of a tract near Congree [sic]"and praying for an extension of his warrant. He said "the said land he lives upon has been run out by Jacob SUMMERALL." His prayer was denied. George was subsquently granted another 350 acres located on waters of Stephens Creek in the fork of Noble's Creek [later called Horns Creek] and Cedar Creek located in Granville County. This land is located about 10 mile west of current Edgefield, South Carolina. George and his family resided there until 1774 when George sold the land to Absalom, who in turn sold the land several months later to John RAINSFORD. James DANIEL and his nephew William had lands within 20 miles east southeast of Edgefield in addition to holdings in the Fairfield and Richland county areas.
On 10 August 1770, Absalom became a landowner in his own right, receiving a grant of 100 acres in St. Johns Parish, Berkeley County, South Carolina . No other location was given for this land. St. John's Parish is on the Santee River below the junction of the Congaree (Saluda) and Wateree Rivers in the area of Dorchester. Absalom paid the memorial for this land on 8 April 1771. Names indexed on the grant are John BREMAR, Absalom MILAND [sic, EILAND], Peter GREEDING, Bengman MERCAIN, and Andrew STEVENSON. [Effective in 1767[?], headright grants of 100 acres could be given to anyone aged 18 or over. A grant of 100 acres no longer implied that a person was married or had a second person with them.]
In August 1774, Absalom bought his father's 350 acres in the fork of Horns [Nobles] and Cedar creeks in Edgefield County, South Carolina. He then sold it to John RAINSFORD, recorded 21 April 1775. A reference to this sale recorded on 3 Dec. 1782 shows Benjamin GREEN of Burke County, Georgia, planter and son and heir of Thomas GREEN of St. Matthews Parish, Georgia, planter, decd., deeded to John RAINSFORD of Horns Creek, 96 District, South Carolina, 350 acres bought from Absalom EILAND of Colletons [sic] County, South Carolina, on Cedar Creek and Nobles Creek. [SC DEED ABSTRACTS 1776-1783, Books Y-4 through H-5, SC Deeds H-5, 9-11; Brent H. Holcomb, Columbia: SCMAR, 1994, p. 239] This shows Absalom living in Colleton County in 1775, perhaps on his 1770 grant of 100 acres.
Per Eiland family research, Absalom EILAND married Ann DANIEL, daughter of James DANIEL of Fairfield County, South Carolina in 1775. A later record states: "EILAND, Absolom, Hancock Cty RS, w.(ife) Ann DANIEL." [Information on Some Georgia Pioneers, p. 58, page heading is "Family Heads 1805 Georgia"]
Absalom and Ann resided in Orangeburgh District in 1778: The SC Early Census Index, 1778, lists: Absalom EILANDS State: SC; County: Orangeburg District; Township: No Township Listed; Year: 1778 [Jackson, Ron V., Accelerated Indexing Systems, comp.. South Carolina Census, 1790-1890 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: The Generations Network, Inc., 1999. Original data: Compiled and digitized by Mr. Jackson and AIS from microfilmed schedules of the U.S. Federal Decennial Census, territorial/state censuses, and/or census substitutes.]
Absalom and Ann remained in South Carolina until at least 1778-1779 when he is named on the list of Petit Jurors Between the North and South Fork of Edisto River.
"Absalom EILAND was in Wilkes Co., Ga. by 1779, as he later filed a claim for loss due to Indian raids in that year. Absalom also served as a Revolutionary Soldier in Ga., and is included in the D.A.R. Patriot Index. He was given grant No. 259 for 287 1/2 acres in Washington Co., Ga., June 28, 1785. This tract was crossed by Island Creek. This land touched land of his Brother John EILAND and of his Brother Isaiah EILAND, both Brothers' award land for having served as Revolutionary War Soldiers."" [Cecil Little, Clanton, Alabama]
Ann is next named with Absalom on 2 May 1787 in Georgia when "Absolom EILAND and his wife Ann" of Washington County sold 287 and a half acres of land in Greene County, Georgia to "James DANIELL of Fairfield County, South Carolina." Levi DANIELL, James' son, and George HARDWICK, James' brother-in-law, witnessed the sale. (Greene County, Georgia, Deed Book 1, p. 34) This land was later in Hancock County. This record clearly associates Absalom and Ann Daniel EILAND with James DANIELL of Fairfield County, South Carolina and his son Levi. Coupled with the birth of Levi Daniel EILAND in the early 1790s they clearly support a family attachment.
About 1793-95, Absalom and Ann named a son Levi Daniel EILAND. He is believed to be named for Levi DANIELL, "Ann's favorite and youngest brother" who witnessed the 2 May 1787 land sale. This and the record above are the most compelling evidence that Ann is James DANIELL's daughter.
Although James had lands in Georgia in the mid 1780s, James did not move his residence from South Carolina to Hancock County, Georgia until after the 1790 census. He signed his Will 11 May 1797 and died there before 5 March 1798.
For the record, neither Ann nor Absalom EILAND are mentioned in James DANIELL's Will. That may be of no particular consequence if Ann and Absalom, wealthy in his own right, had previously received property or money representing a share of James' estate.
Jones County, Georgia was established in 1807 on territory ceded by the Creek Indians. The territory was distributed by land lottery in lots of 202.5 acres. Absalom and Ann moved to Jones County, Georgia. Absalom is in Jones County records by 1809 and died there before 1 August 1814.
Ann remained in Jones County and died there before 4 November 1839.
The mother of Ann DANIEL, born 1753, is not known. In fact, none of the mothers of James DANIELL's children are known. What is certain, though, is that Ann "Nancy" DANIEL's mother was not James' widow Nancy DANIELL. The widow Nancy was about four years younger than Ann "Nancy" Daniel EILAND. James BARROW married the widow, Nancy DANIELL. She was Nancy HARDWICK, born 6 Jan 1758 in Westmoreland County, Virginia and died 18 April 1814 in Baldwin County, Georgia. Bible records prove this. Levi DANIELL, Ann's brother, as this compiler concludes he is, was born 21 Dec 1759. He refers to James' widow as "my step-mother, Nancy DANIELL" in his Will dated 8 December 1800, necessarily meaning she was also his older sister Ann's step-mother.

From the research papers Cecil Little sent to Jere Fletcher of Tyler, Texas in March 1995:
"One will discover many names repeated in the various Eiland Family units. "Daniel" comes from the maiden name of the Wife of Absalom EILAND. She was Nancy Ann DANIEL. Nancy had a favorite brother named Levi DANIEL, so she and Absalom named a Son born 1791 Levi Daniel EILAND. Absalom's Son, Enoch EILAND, named his first Son born 1802 John Daniel EILAND then his Grandson Zachariah named a Son John Daniel EILAND."
[Comments: John Daniel EILAND is an interesting reference for Mr. Little to include here.Levi DANIELL's cousin John DANIEL married Levi's widow, Martha Pearson COOK of Hancock County, Georgia. John Daniel EILAND's namesake?
John and Martha DANIEL's 19 year old daughter, Martha C. DANIEL, died in 1827 in Clinton, Jones County, Georgia., where Ann Nancy EILAND received mail. Relevant?
Juliet Anna DANIELL, daughter of Levi and granddaughter of James DANIELL, married Col. Warren JOURDAN in Jones County, Georgia on 24 June 1823. Ann Daniel EILAND's being a daughter of James DANIELL of Fairfield County, South Carolina, would have made her Juliet her niece. Was Juliet in Jones County in conjunction with the family of Absalom and Ann EILAND? RLD]

"John Thomson Sankey graduated at Hampden-Sydney in the class of 1788 and according to "Bagbys General Catalogue of the College", became a minister. The fact, however, is that he was a practicing physician of Wilkes County, Ga., in 1793. There he married in 1801 his firs cousin once removed, Ann Thompson Daniel, daughter of William and Hannah (Cunningham) Daniel. In 1827 the orphans of John T. Sankey were listed in the Georgia Land Lottery as recipients of land grants. They were (1) Richard Thomson Sankey who graduated in medicine in 1827 from the University of Pennsylvania and who married in Greene County, Ga., 28 October 1831, and (2) William Daniel Sankey who married in Greene County, Ga., 2 March 1824 Margaret Daniel a daughter of James Cunningham Daniel and his wife Mary Parks, mentioned in other family notes." "According to marriage records of Greene Co., GA, Dr. Sankey married Ann Thompson Daniel in Greene Co., GA in 1801. She was daughter of William and Hannah (Cunningham) Daniel. It appears that they were cousins. Dr. Sankey's tombstone shows his death as 1811. His widow, Ann (Daniel) Sankey remarried to Drury Towns, Feb. 9, 1814 in Greene Co."

"An article titled "Some of the Descendants of the Rev. John Thomson (c. 1690-1733)," by John Goodwin Herndon is found in Genealogies of VA Families from the Virginia Magazine of History & Biography. Mr. Herndon states that John Thomson Sankey was the son of the Rev. Richard Sankey who moved from PA to Pr. Edward Co., VA ca. 1759. Rev. Richard Sankey was a very well-known and respected Presbyterian minister in Pennsylvania and Virginia. Mr. Herndon states that Dr. John T. Sankey had sons: (1) Richard Thomson Sankey "who graduated in medicine in 1827 from the University of Pennsylvania"; and (2) William Daniel Sankey. I've not found proof of this but it does appear Dr. Sankey had more than one child as in 1827 the orphans of John T. Sankey were listed in the Georgia Land Lottery as receiving land grants. "

Orrin Stephen PIKE married Susan Della WEST on 1 May 1898 in Heard County, Georgia. She died 4 January 1920. Orrin was the informant on her death certificate. His second wife was Annie, marriage record not found. Annie DANIEL was married to a "West" PIKE about 1921. Their son, Harold Loyd PIKE was born 11 Dec 1922 in LaGrange, Troup County, Georgia, and died 3 January 1923 in LaGrange at age 23 days. Informant for Harold's death certificate, which names his parents, was West PIKE, apparently using the maiden name of his deceased wife as a nickname? No other appropriate record for this "West" PIKE has been located. In 1930 Annie is the wife of Otis [S.?, initial obscured] PIKE. Two of Orrin S. PIKE's sons by Susan Della WEST, Blueford, age 17, and O. D. PIKE, age 15, are in the household. The name "Otis" is another anomoly. Censuses from 1900 to 1920 name him as Orin S. and Orran S. PIKE. This compiler concludes that Otis S./Orin S./Orran S./Orrin Stephen and "West" PIKE are the same man.

Artemisia DANIEL
Husband
Born: Christened: Died: Buried:Marriage:
Wife Artemisia DANIEL 1018
Born: 18 Jan 1809 - Chester District, South Carolina 2182 Christened: Died: After 11 Jun 1880 1996 Buried:
Father: David DANIEL (1769-1832) 1477 Mother: Mary MULDOON (Abt 1785-Bef 1819)
Other Spouse: DANIEL ( - )
Other Spouse: Isaac Anderson ALLEN (1819-1895) 2182 - Abt 1843
Children

"The "Official History of Laurens County Georgia 1807-1941"; written by Bertha Sheppard Hart; shows a MARY JANE CONEY married to BENJAMIN DANIEL on both 1/14/1890 and 3/14/1893. (According to Ms. Hart, her information was obtained from the marriage records of Laurens County and were from book 'K' - pages 385 and 396.)
I am interested in gathering information on this marriage as I am fairly certain that this BENJAMIN was my grandfather, and MARY JANE was his first wife - - with my grandmother, JULIA MAE SINGLETON being his second wife.
We do know that BENJAMIN was married prior to his marriage to my grandmother; and that he and his first wife had a daughter named ROWENA. Thankful for any help. Suzanne"

"Amos Persons was born in Warren County in 1803 and is probably the Amos Persons that married Martha P. Bowdrie 14 Jun 1831 in Warren County, Georgia (Georgia Marriages to 1850). "Amos dies in 1842 and wife Caroline marries Henry Key before 1850. I think that Amos and Caroline had a child, Martha, around 1841. I can't prove it but, in the 1850 Barbour County US Census there is a Martha Persons age 9, living with Catherine (Daniell) Mitchell and also Milly Keys. Catherine Mitchell was said to have "adopted 14 children in her life." [Tuck Wilson]
General Notes: Wife -
Caroline Grace DANIEL's father, John DANIEL wrote what might be termed an all inclusive will. He gave no individual bequeaths, but instead, left everything to be operated as a whole for the benefit of all his family, eventually to be equally divided among his children. In part, John wrote, "It is my will and desire that all the Negroes of which I may be possessed, together with every other species of personal property should be kept together upon my two plantations, vis, the plantation on which I now live, and ___ Mill (?) place for the natural benefit of my wife and children,... when my wife marries or any of my children arrive at the age of twenty one years or marry, they or either of them upon the happening of such event shall be entitled a distributive share of my whole personal estate , and should it suit the convenience of my children after receiving a share of my personal estate as above mentioned, shall be at liberty to work their hands on any part of my lands, rent free."
On November 2, 1835, on a motion, the Hancock County Court of Ordinary ordered that Arthur J. BUTTS, Henry GAREY, James W. SIMMONS, Benjamin HARPER, and William BUTTS are appointed Commissioners to lay off and set apart to Caroline DANIEL her distributive share of the estate of her father and report their proceedings to the Executor.

Alabama Death Row inmate Phillip Hallford executed for killing daughter's boyfriend
Published: Thursday, November 04, 2010, 6:38 PM Updated: Thursday, November 04, 2010, 6:58 PM
By The Associated Press
ATMORE \emdash Phillip Hallford, 63, who was convicted of killing his daughter's 16-year-old boyfriend was executed this evening.
He was pronounced dead at 6:26 p.m. at Holman Prison. When asked if he had any final words, he said, "No."
Hallford spoke softly to the chaplain and guards for a few minutes as the lethal injection was administered, and then quietly slipped away.
Hallford lost a bid for a stay of execution by the Alabama Supreme Court just hours before he was to die by lethal injection at Holman Prison for the shooting death of Eddie Shannon at a rural south Alabama bridge.
Gov. Bob Riley also refused to grant clemency. Hallford's attorney filed a final motion for a stay with the U.S. Supreme Court.
Melinda Hallford Powell, who was 15 and pregnant at the time of the killing, said her father forced her to lure Shannon to the rural site in Dale County, where he shot him to death and threw the body off a nearby bridge. Then, she said, her father made a necklace with the casings from the bullets and forced her to wear it.
Powell, who now lives in North Carolina and is married with three children, said she had been sexually abused by her father and had lived "a nightmare" for years.
"You can't imagine what it was like. I was kind of a zombie after that," Powell told The Associated Press in a phone interview Wednesday night.
The Associated Press generally does not identify victims of sexual abuse, but Powell said her account of the abuse is in court records and she had no objections.
According to trial testimony, Hallford was angry that his daughter was dating Shannon and, before dumping the body from the bridge, Hallford took the boy's wallet.
Hallford spent his final hours Thursday visiting with his mother, Mertie Boyett, and other relatives. He did not request a final meal, but instead had cheese crackers, nacho cheese Bugles, a ham-and-cheese sandwich and a Dr Pepper from vending machines.
Hallford gave his only posessions, including a watch and a Bible, to his mother.
Shannon's stepmother, Angelita Johns, said in a statement that Hallford's execution "is long overdue."
"What Phillip Hallford did to my stepson Eddie Shannon was unforgivable," Johns said. "Eddie Shannon was an innocent 16-year-old just beginning to live his life."
Alabama prison system officials said they had an adequate stock of sodium thiopental, a drug used in lethal injections that has been in short supply nationally. The shortage prompted some states to delay executions or go overseas to find the drug, which makes an inmate unconscious before other drugs cause paralysis and stop the heart.

General Notes: Husband -
According to the court deposition below, Llewellin Williamson THREEWITS was born in 1789. In the 1790 South Carolina Census for Orangeburgh, North District, #383, Llewellin THREEWITS is listed with 4 males over 16, 1 male under 16, 3 females and 17 slaves. This appears to be his father's household, with Llewellin Williamson being the male under 16. John THREEWITS is listed on the same page with 2 males over 16, 1 female and 18 slaves.
Llewellyn W. THREEWITS married Catherine DANIEL, daughter of William DANIEL and Lucretia BELL. Edgefield County, South Carolina Records indicate he is of Lexington District and listed on the Richland Equity Roll 71. 1811.
THREEWITS, Llewellen-Of Lexington. Richland Bills 46 filed 8 Jan 1810 -vs- John THOMAS -w- Elleanor alleges: Complaintant is only child of Llewellen THREEWITS, late of said District. That he died about 14 years since, leaving widow, Eleanor, complainant's mother, who about 1800 -m- John THOMAS. Bill to acc't for property of dec'd. Shows Llewellan THREEWITS, the elder, died in the summer of 1796. Shows: Llewellen Williamson THREEWITS - m- a sister of ______DANIEL. Llewellen a drunkard, separated from wife.
"Llewelyn THREWITZ was living with his mother at the time of his death, he and his wife having separated, and is buried in the old THREWITZ burying ground near Columbia. He was the husband of Catherine DANIEL, daughter of William DANIEL, Sr., and they had three children, namely: Eleanor Fitzpatrick THREWITZ, born in 1810, was reared and educated by her grandmother, who resided in Columbia, and for whom she was named. She married Dr. ("William Daniel" RLD) MARSH, moved to Ala., and later Miss., where she died, leaving a small son, who also died when very young. John Llewelyn THREWITZ, 2nd child of Llewelyn and Catherine, was born, July 5, 1811; died Oct. 17, 1834. He is buried near Edgefield, and a tombstone marks his grave; Elizabeth Juliet THREWITZ, the youngest child, was born Mar. 5, 1812 and died July 14, 1898." (Mrs. Sallie Lou Watson Strother) (Note the manner in which THREEWITS is spelled here. RLD) "As to the spelling of the name, I have nine autographs of the old major and he spells it THREEWITS every time. I have two of Llewellin and he used the same spelling, and that spelling is used generally in documents and contemporary newspapers." A. S. Salley Jr.
From a letter by Mr. A. S. Salley Jr., Columbia, S.C. to the Editor of The State newspaper published Nov./Dec. 1927, entitled: Secretary of Historical Commission Cites Records in His Office as Events in Threewits Family. "Mrs. Strother will also observe that Chancellor DeSaussure refers to a marriage bond executed by Llewellen W. THREEWITS October 20, 1813. That bond is recorded in my office. By it he deeded property in trust for the benefit of his wife to Jesse DANIEL, her brother, and Joel ADAMS, Jr. This same Llewellen Williamson THREEWITS had on January 3, 1810, filed in Equity a "Bill to Account' against John and Eleanor Thomas, "Humbly complaining sheweth unto your Honors your orator Llewellen Williamson THREWITS of Lexington District and State aforesaid that he is the son and only child of Llewellen THREEWITS late of the said District and State Deceased and that your Orators and Father died about fourteen years since leaving a widow (Eleanor by name) your orators mother".... "that his Sd. Father departed this life when your orator was very young".... "that about the year eighteen hundred the said Eleanor ye. orators mother intermarried with a certain John THOMAS."... "that having lately arrived at the age of twenty one years" he asks for an accounting. He secured possession of his property and in February, 1810, married Catherine DANIEL, and on the 24th of June, 1811, Llewellin W. THREEWITS and wife filed a "Bill of Relief" in Equity against John DANIEL wherein they themselves "your orator Llewe1lyn THREEWITS and your oratrix Catherine THREEWITS of the District of Lexington" and speech of "William DANIEL late of the district of Edgefield in the State aforesaid father of your oratrix'.
Richland Co Bills 71, filed 24 Jan 1811-Llewellan THREEWITS and wife, Catherine of Lexington dist. -vs- John DANIEL -alleges: William DANIEL, late of Edgefield District owned 1000 acres in Fairfield District on Broad River. Left will. Apt'd John DANIEL, James DANIEL and Philip RAIFORD of District of Edgefield, Exor's. Devised to daughters, Catherine (oratrix) and Mary DANIEL, son. John."
Dates of birth show that Llewellan and Catherine had three children between 1810 and 1812. Eleanor Fitzpatrick was born in 1810, and a second child, John Llewellen, was born July 5, 1811, only eight months later, March 3 1812, the third child, Elizabeth Juliet was born.
NOTE: There is controversy about this family and its ties to Emily GEIGER, said to be a heroine of the Revolutionary War, which may be affecting both names of individuals and dates in this family. The compiler takes no position on the controversy, trying only to use documented facts. The contentions are addressed at http://sciway3.net/clark/revolutionarywar/geigeroutline.html. What is certain, is that Llewellin Williamson THREEWITS married Catherine DANIEL.
General Notes: Wife -
Catherine DANIEL was one of two daughters shown under 10 in her father, William's household in the 1800 census. She married Llewellyn Williamson THREEWITS in 1808. They had three children between 1810 and 1812.
"William DANIEL of Edgefield, dau. Catherine -m- Llewellyn THREEWITS. Of Lexington Dist. Richland Eq. Roll 71. 1811".
The marriage was not a happy one as evidenced by Catherine separating from Llewellyn and his moving in with his mother. Court records show him to have been a drunkard who died in 1814.
Sometime prior to 1820, Catherine remarried to John BELL.
DeSaussure's Equity Reports, Vol. 4, page 560 shows Chancellor DeSaussure's resume of the evidence given in the case of "Catherine THREEWITS by her next friend, vs, Llewellin THREEWITS", which was heard at Columbia in July 1, (18?)15.
