General Notes: Husband -
FAMILY LORE: William Gunnell of Westmoreland County, Va. seems to have been the first of his family to settle in what is now Fairfax County. He would become the progenitor of most Gunnells in America before 1800. In 1729, he received three land grants on the Northern Neck of Virginia, then encompassing all of what is now Northern Virginia. His grants totalled 1616 acres in what was Stafford County and later became Fairfax County. Below Difficult Run he received 966 acres, on "Pinimentts Run" he recieved 400 acres, along with 250 acres below the headwaters of "Pinimentts Run." William Gunnell and his two sons, William and Henry were recorded on the 1744 poll list for the election of Burgess from Fairfax County. William Gunnell died in 1760, his will proved on 19 September 1780. His will names his children, but not his wife, whose identity is still in question. In the will of Richard Henry Lee, witnessed by Martha Gunnell, among the inventory of his property "in the quarter" are William Gunnell, Martha Gunnell, Mary Gunnell, and Wiliam Gunnell Jr. She may have been Martha Gunnell, a woman with whom William Gunnell was indentured to the Lee Family of Virginia. She is possibly a Corbin because of its repetion on the lines of Jonathan Gunnell of Bedford. Persons were indentured by the Lees in their succesfull attempt to break down the feudal headright system, and establish the Proprietorship of the Northern Neck. Men like William Gunnell were 'foot-soldiers,' who owed allegiance not to the headright, but to their indenturer. Thus they could expect to earn a position in society and more importantly, land. The provisions of his will, the inventory of his estate suggest that he was, by the standards of his day, wealthy. His will, signed with his mark as he could not read or write, is testament to how far one could rise through the system on indentured servitude-if you were of political value to the indenturer. From the "History of Truro Parish" by Rev. Philip Slaughter, D.D. come this passages: "...the Parish of Truro, which extended along the Potomac from the mouth of the Occoquan to the Blue Ridge, including what are now the parishes of Truro, Cameron, Fairfax and Shelburne [These are Colonial Parishes. Those of more recent foundation in the same territory are Johns, Upper Truro, McGill and a part of Meade.] Within this territory there were three churches, Occoquan, William Gunnells, and a chapel "above Goose Creek." and "At the next meeting- of the Vestry, held March 26, 1733, John STURMAN and Giles TILLETT were added to the Vestry, and there were present also Francis AUBREY and William GODFREY, not previously mentioned. It was "Ordered, that the Churchwardens give publick notice to workmen to appear at the next Vestry to be held for this parish to agree for the building of a Church at the cross roads near Michael REAGAN's in this parish." At the meeting on April 16, 1733, Michael ASHFORD took the oaths and subscribed the test as a Vestryman. An agreement was made with the Rev. Lawrence De BUTTS to preach three times a month for one year, "at Occoquan Church, the new Church, or William GUNNELL's, and at the Chappell above Goose Creek,1 for the sum of eight thousand pounds of tobacco clear of the Warehouse charges and abatements,---And the said De BUTTS doth further agree to and with the Vestry aforesaid, that in case he fails, or is by the weather prevented to preach at any of the places aforesaid, any of the times aforesaid, tobacco shall only be levied for him in proportion to his service."
Resided: 17 Oct 1741, Prince William County, Virginia.

Golden HENDRICKS married Alice CORNETT on 23 Oct 1887 in Meriwether County, Georgia. Both are listed as born in 1860 on the 1900 census, yet both are age 30, not 40. They have been married 12 years. Later censuses support Golden's birth in 1870. Alice is presumed to have died before 1905 when Golden married second Mattie Lou DANIEL

Golden HENDRICKS married Mattie DANIEL on 3 Apr 1905 in Troup County, Georgia.
Mattie DANIEL must have left him before 1910 because she is living in her father's home, named as DANIEL, married 6 years, having had two children, one of whom died, the other, Sarah Lee, born about 1907. Sarah Lee was also named as DANIEL in that household. Presuming Alice Cornett HENDRICKS died before 1904, as may have James, born about 1899, Mattie took her offspring with her when she left, that would explain no additional children in Golden's household in 1910, as would Alice dieing and his not remarrying. "Widowed" in 1910 may mean divorced.

Stephen HALBERT, was born in central Kentucky, Apr 26, 1793. He made his home with his parents until his marriage to Mary COTTINGHAM, 10 April 1813. Mary was the daughter of William COTTINGHAM, 1766-1820, and Mary Johnson. William was the great-great grandson of Thomas COTTINGHAM, (a royalist refugee, who had fled to Ireland and than to Maryland. He married 8 July 1666, Mary DIXON, daughter of Ambrose DIXON). William COTTINGHAM lived first in Bourbon County where he was on the tax lists from 1802 to 1808. In 1810 he was on the Lewis County tax list with 350 acres on Salt Lick. He was a man of taste and education. Stephen HALBERT saw military service as a Private in Captain Aaron STRATTON's Company, Colonel John POGUE's Rgt., Kentucky Mounted Volunteer Militia, in the campaign of 1813, ending in the Battle of the Thames, Canada, 5 October, where the great Tecumseh was slain and the British and Indian power broken in the Northwest. Stephen was a farmer on Salt Lick Creek, Subsequently, and at his death on Cabin Creek. Also served as a Deputy Sheriff for two years. He was not successful as a farmer but managed to raise a notable family of five sons and three daughters. His wife was a beautiful woman and her life and character were as beautiful as her person. She exercised a strong influence on her children. Stephen and Mary had eight children: Isaac Newton, born February 14, 1814, Mary Caroline, born May 13, 1815, William Cottingham, born February 20, 1817, Harrison Osbourn, born about 1819, Henry, born about 1821, James S., born about 1823, Elizabeth, born about 1825, and Sidnie, born in January, 1829. Mary died 27 January 1829, under 32 years of age, apparently as a result of childbirth. On 12 September 1829, Stephen married Priscilla WATKINS, daughter of Joseph WATKINS. Stephen and Priscilla had two sons and two daughters. Sometime after Stephen HALBERT's death on 29 March 1849, his widow took her children to Illinois and settled on a tract of 160 acres granted Stephen for his military services. Joseph and Pamelia died unmarried. John and Hester survived their youth but nothing is known of their descendants. (W.C.H., Sr)
