General Notes: Wife -

Rosa L. DANIEL married James Lawton COLLINS on 4 June 1893 in Wilkinson County, Georgia. She and James L. had seven children. James is presumed to have died before 1935 when Rosa is head of household in Duval County, Florida.

Curiously, Rosa L. COLLINS is listed twice in the 1935 Florida Population Census, once, at age 60, with her son, Ray J., and second, age 64, in the home of her son, Dennis H. COLLINS. Likely, she had her own home, but spent a lot of time at her son's home helping to care for his young children.

General Notes: Husband -

William Madison Collins was born in 1827 in DeKalb County, Georgia, attested to in his Confederate Pension Application, dated 2 February 1897. Confusion about his birth date was caused by information on his death certificate, number 32491, which records his age as 110 years when he died on 5 December 1926 in Woodbury, Meriwether County, Georgia. This placed his birth about 1816. [Death Certificates, Vital Records, Public Health, RG 26-5-95, Georgia Archives, Digital Collection Georgia Death Certificates, Filename 004179378_00298.jpg] Censuses from 1850 to 1910 consistently show his birth about 1827. The 1900 census records his birth in "Dec 1827." Using this birth month and year and his date of death, William was about age 99 when he died. Newspaper articles state William Madison COLLINS died either at age 110 or days short of 112.

William's parents have not been proven. Robert Frigo speculates they were Benjamin Collins and Sidney Foster who married in Hancock county in 1811. A FamilySearch.org record lists the marriage of Benjamin Collins to "Liddey" Foster on 26 September 1811 in Hancock County, Georgia. "Liddey" may be an error in reading "Sidney" in the original handwriting in this record. ["Georgia, Marriages, 1808-1967," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FWDW-24T : accessed 12 Mar 2013), Benjamin Collins and Liddey Foster, 26 Sep 1811.]
More records lead to speculation:
1. "Georgia marriages to 1850"
Benjamin Collins married Sidney Foster on 26 Sep 1811 in Hancock County, Georgia.
2. "Georgia marriages 1699-1944"
Benjamin Collins married Siddy Foster on 26 Sep 1811 in Hancock County,Georgia.
3. Same Benjamin?
"Georgia marriages to 1850"
"Benjamin J. L. Collins" married Kizia Foster on 29 Jun 1814 in Hancock County, Georgia.
4. "Georgia marriages 1699-1944"
"Benjamin John Da Collins" married Kizie Foster on 29 Jun 1814 in Hancock County, Georgia.
"This last record is taken by at least one researcher to mean that Sidney Foster may have died early in her marriage, and her widowed husband married her sister. I will attach that researcher's notes below this message, since I've copied a lot from the page. (The link is still good, but I have not traced through the pages to find the author.) An early death of Sidney Foster would obviously not square with her appearance in the 1850 census, but I don't know whether it is conjecture or established by documentation. Another interesting thing in this researcher's notes is the Truitt name showing up in the Foster family -- recall Eli Collins and Nancy Truitt are Freddy Collins' favored candidates for parents of William M. Collins." [Robert Frigo]

3. The orphans of Benjamin Collins were successful in the 1827 Georgia land lottery drawing. Born in 1827, William may have been their youngest child. Benjamin's date of death is not known to this compiler. Sidney was about age 35 in 1827. Sidney Collins, age 58, is in the household with William Collins, 22, in 1850.

William and family have not been identified in the 1830 or 1840 censuses.

The 1850 census, Meriwether County, Georgia, lists William W. [sic] COLLINS, 22, and wife, Nancy A. COLLINS, 24, no children, reside in the household of her parents, Peter and Charity BRIDGES, 44 and 43 respectively. Sidney COLLINS 58, female, born in North Carolina, is also in the household. All others born in Georgia. [Series: M432 Roll: 77 Page: 353]

William M. COLLINS married Mary Francis [Maddox] BRIDGES on 8 November 1869 in Meriwether County, Georgia. In 1870, William M. COLLINS is married to Mary Frances MADDOX, 32. Mary's children by Edmun R. BRIDGES are in his household. Did Edmun R. die in the War Between The States? Was Thomas S. called Sydney? Was the daughter Mary called Dolly? Edwin[?] not yet born? He was age 11 in 1870 but actually younger, not recorded in the 1860 census. Nancy A. BRIDGES was the sister of Edmun R. BRIDGES. William M. COLLINS was an uncle by marriage to Edmun's children and their step-father as well.

In the 1910 census of Gill, Meriwether County, Georgia, William M. and Mary COLLINS live by themselves and are 82 and 73 years of age.

William has not been located in the 1920 census. He outlived Mary who died between 1910 and 1926.

There are informant errors, highlighted in bold print below, in the information on William's death certificate, File No. for State Registrar 32491. From this certificate:
William M. COLLINS, estimated born in 1816, in Gwinett County, Georgia, died 5 December 1926 in Woodbury, Meriwether County, Georgia, at the age of 110 years. He was a widower and resident of New Woodbury, Georgia. His father's name and birthplace was not known. His mother was Nancy COLLINS born in Gwinett County. Informant was J. L. Heard of Woodbury, Georgia. William was buried in Bethersday [sic] Church Cemetery on 6 December 1926. ["Georgia, Deaths, 1914-1927," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JDJQ-TPT : accessed 14 Mar 2013), William M Collins, 05 Dec 1926.]
NOTES:
1. On his Confederate Pension Application, William attests to his birth in 1827 in DeKalb County, Georgia, making his age about 99 when he died.
2. William's first wife was Nancy A. Collins, nee Bridges. She died before 8 November 1869. "Nancy Collins" being named as William's mother may be an informant's memory error.

William M. COLLINS is buried in the Bethesda United Methodist Church Cemetery, Manchester, Meriwether County,
Georgia. Find A Grave Memorial# 24180909 created by Mike Dover Jan 26, 2008, maintained by "tommyandjodie", as of 5 May 2012, shows a picture of William M. COLLINS' Confederate service headstone. There are no dates on this marker.

The Find A Grave memorial lists his birth on Dec. 9, 1815 and his death on Dec. 15, 1926. This birth date appears to have been derived from the death certificate information. Conversely, it may be the known birth date of another William Collins.

This obituary is also on the memorial:

"UNCLE BILLIE" COLLINS
HOGANSVILLE, Ga., Dec. 5.(AP) "Uncle Billie" Collins, 111 years old, died here today at the home of his grandson, Carl Hay, with whom he had spent the last few years. He had been active up until a year ago, although blind for some time.
He was born in Alabama, but spent most of his life in Meriwether County, Ga.
At the age of forty-five, he entered the Confederate Army and served throughout the four years of the Civil War, being credited with having borne the late Judge William T. Newman, of Atlanta, off the battlefield when the latter was wounded.
He is survived by fifty-five grandchildren and 230 great- and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon and he will be buried at Bethesda Church Cemetery near Manchester.

A "GRANNY COLLINS" is buried in the same plot as William. From pictures on the Find A Grave memorials, she appears to be two spaces left of William. Per a post by "hudsontodd" on http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.collins/1475.2/mb.ashx, "His mother" is inscribed on Granny's headstone, but the inscription is not visible in the picture. RLD.

General Notes: Wife -

The obituary of Julia Flournoy HURT was published in the Union Recorder, Milledgeville, Georgia, Jan. 5, 1892, page 6:
"Death of Mrs. Lee Jordan
Mrs. Lee JORDAN died very suddenly at 8 o'clock Wednesday night at the residence of her mother, Mrs. Fannie HURT, in Wynnton, a suburb of Columbus. She was out at church on Sunday and apparently well on Monday. She had an attack of grip, with symptoms of pneumonia, and though confined to her room, she was not considered dangerously ill. A few seconds previous to her death she was conversing rationally with her physician, Dr. HURT, who had been called, then turned over on her side and in a moment was dead.
Her sudden death was a terrible shock to those in the room and for some minutes it could scarcely be realized.
Mrs. JORDAN was a remarkable woman and was universally popular, being a great favorite in society. She married in 1861 Colonel Peyton COLQUITT, a brother of Senator COLQUITT, who was killed in the battle of Chickamauga. Colonel COLQUITT was at one time editor of The Columbus Enquirer. In 1868 she married Colonel Lee JORDAN, a wealthy planter, who survives her and is prostrated by the suddenness of the terrible blow. She was born near Wynnton, in 1846. She was the only daughter of Mrs. Fanny HURT and Joel Early HURT, a prominent citizen of Columbus.
Mrs. JORDAN's social career has been very brilliant. She was a great beauty and had throngs of admirers wherever she went. Just after the war, and in her widowhood, she visited Paris, and was a great favorite at the French court.
Many friends in this city sympathize with Mr. JORDAN in his sad loss."

General Notes: Husband -

"Clark HOWELL (1863-1936, eldest son of Evan Park HOWELL, after graduating from the University of Georgia, joined his father's newspaper, the Atlanta Constitution, in 1884, then in its heyday under Henry W. GRADY's managing editorship. HOWELL spent five years in the Georgia House of Representatives, the last year (1890-91) as Speaker. He was a Democrat national comitteeman from 1892 to 1924. He was president of the Georgia Senate from 1900 to 1906, resigning to run unsuccessfully for the governorship against Hoke SMITH and Tom WATSON. Considering himself an enlightened conservative, HOWELL generally opposed racial demagoguery, though with occasional lapses. In the twenties he endorsed Al SMITH and opposed the Ku Klux Klan. His active campaigning for Franklin D. ROOSEVELT was rewarded by chairmanship of the National Aviation Commission. HOWELL was friendly to BTW, but at the time of the dinner at the White House and several other times when BTW sought to go beyond the Atlanta Compromise racial formula, Howell sharply criticized him." ("The Booker T. Washington Papers", page 393.)

"HOWELL was editor-in-chief of the Atlanta Constitution (1901-1936)...and a trustee of the University of Georgia (1896-1927)." (http://specialcollections.library.emory.edu/guides-atlanta-pt2.html)

"The "Official History of Laurens County Georgia 1807-1941"; written by Bertha Sheppard Hart; shows a MARY JANE CONEY married to BENJAMIN DANIEL on both 1/14/1890 and 3/14/1893. (According to Ms. Hart, her information was obtained from the marriage records of Laurens County and were from book 'K' - pages 385 and 396.)
I am interested in gathering information on this marriage as I am fairly certain that this BENJAMIN was my grandfather, and MARY JANE was his first wife - - with my grandmother, JULIA MAE SINGLETON being his second wife.
We do know that BENJAMIN was married prior to his marriage to my grandmother; and that he and his first wife had a daughter named ROWENA. Thankful for any help. Suzanne"

General Notes: Husband -

James C. Deneale I (b. abt. 1710-15 d. 1806) who lived in Fairfax Co. Va. Various accounts state that James (1) was a very old gentleman at his death, probably 90 plus years. James (1) will of 1805 indicates he owned a plantation with slaves in Fairfax Co. plus other parcels of land in Va. and Kentucky (part of Va. until 1780) in current Jefferson and Nelson counties, close to current Louisville Ky.
James I will states he had eight children. His first wife is unknown but they married in 1740 and his second wife's first name was Priscilla, his five son's were William, George, John/John Earl, Hugh and James II and three daughters named Katherine, Theodotia and Phileby. Additional unconfirmed children may have been Sybilla, Dassia, Mary, Jeannette and John that could be the children from his first wife but not mentioned in his 1805 will.

Sarah Juliet wrote this letter to her son from Oakglen, June 12, 1864. By process of elimination, it appears sent to her son Conrad.
My darling boy
It has been a week since we sent to the P.O. so your letter was a long time in reaching me. We were having a kind of "picnic" at the mill when your letter was handed me. Mis Millie, Fannie & I were playing a game of Whist with Mr. Zimmerman. He also rowed us a mile up the creek in a batteau. It was very pleasant - we were all so tired of the house - any change was a recreation. Frank [son Francis Billing Cook] and Georgie [son George William Cook] caught some fish at the river for our dinner. The ones we caught in the creek were too small. "Mary" [daughter Mary Wood Cook] caught the largest one that day. "Easie" [son, Eason Thweatt] the greatest number - he is so quiet & steady - never plays like the others.
I am so sorry you did not get your "shoes." I sent them by your uncle tom [Sarah's brother, Thomas James Mitchell] nearly three weeks ago to be sent by express. says he gave them to your cousin, Jo. I don't know what ever have become of them. Tho' [Sarah's brother, Thomas James Mitchell?] says we will go to Montgomery tomorrow & inquire about them. I was so afraid they did not fit you anyway it troubles me. I am very sorry indeed!! I rec'd a letter from Mitchell [son, Thomas Mitchell Cook] too. He spoke of his going to the "South" with Dr. Brown [Relationship?] & seeing "Col. Mithell" [Col. Julius Caesar Bonaparte Mitchell] & Bennett Griffin [Sarah's brother-in-law, husband of Martha Maria Mitchell] did not see Theweatt [brother, Eason Thweatt Mitchell] though was well & quite busy. I had my wheat cut two days ago and am afraid the rain will spoil it - it is soaked in the field. We did not know when to cut it. It was too dry and wasted though some is not quite ripe yet. We would like to have you come & eat some wheat bread of our raising if we can get it nicely prepared. You are faring better than we tho' my vertables are coming on right fast. I've had cucumbers by a week & more so than the other families. You must not eat too much & get sick. Tell Mrs. Chaman she will spoil you so about eating, you can't eat when you come home. I am glad Thos. Blanchard is getting along well. Sallie's [daughter, Sally]happy. I expect to have him with her, even crippled as he is, we don't hear from your uncle Thweatt often. Sallie [daughter, Sally] seems gloomy about him..did not enjoy herself much with us the other day. One of our neighbors and Mr. Jesse Walsh died last week. We are all quite dull in the neighborhood now. I can't get no papers to hear the war news often.
The Negroes are having a good time today. they are having a poor Riley's & Ned's funeral preached at the School house. They've been preparing for several weeks - had two Negro preachers from the city. Cousin Prety, the children and I had to wait on ourselves at dinner. Cousin Prety has been staying with me for five weeks - her dry & great humor amuses me. I often feel like inviting her, so much does association do for me. Old I fomed as my habits are so you see how very particular young persons out to be forming their associations. Try to cultivate the acquaintance of those whom you think superior to yourself - never habituate with immoral character. It will be sure to injure you. do you see much of Wm. McDougald? It is a pity he is so dissipated. I am sorry for his poor mother! My son, be very careful when Mr. Chapman is gone - Never use one cent of his money of the house. I think you'll replace it - that's the way so much trouble has been caused - never mind about making money. The good character and habits of industry you are forming now are worth all the money in the world to you - never the smallest article Mr. C's permission. I want you always to sustain your father's character to prefect honesty in all his dealings with men. Pray to God to help you, do your Duty wherever. Let me always know what you need so you are doing right. Never think of any trouble you will be to me. I will be a thousand time repaid by your being thought well by all men! the children say they are going to write you. Frank can scarcely be got to write tho' it pleases him to get letters. I wrote to Fannie & Dr. billing last week. My son, don't join in laughing at your aunt Billings ailments - always show her respect & attentions. It always looks well for young person to show attention to those older than themselves. They should remember their own mother. We are luxuriating in plums now & wish you were here to get some - always wash your teeth when you eat fruit of any kind as the acid causes them to decay. Thank you for the stamps, but don't trouble yourself about getting them. Remember me to Mrs. Chapman, Uncle & Aunt Billings Fannie & family. god help & preserve you from sins & all temptations to do wrong in this world!! Your Mother.

Diaz and husband Ken of John's Island, South Carolina, Carolyn L. Anderson and husband Myles of Roswell, Georgia and Ms. Martha S. Lightcap of Atlanta, Georgia, eight grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Mr. Lightcap was born on September 9, 1926 at Rialto Plantation and grew up in nearby Yazoo City, Mississippi.
