General Notes: Wife -

Cynthia DANIEL is a daughter of David DANIEL and Mary MULDOON. She is named as Cynthia CLINE in her father's Will of 1832.

Jerri Hall states, "From her father's will, it is not clear whether her eldest child was born before this marriage. Since her parents had all daughters, it is possible that she and her husband agreed to give him the Daniel surname in order to continue the line, as was a custom of the time."

Cynthia, her husband, Charles S. CLINE, and family are in the 1850 Census, South Carolina York County, No Twp Listed; Series: M432 Roll: 860 Page: 165: Charles S. CLINE 46 Farmer 1000 Chester Dist, SC; Cynthia 44 York Dist., SC; Leonora 18 York Dist., SC; DANIEL, James S. 35 Laborer York Dist., SC; CLINE, William B. 17 Laborer York Dist., SC; CLINE, Mary 10 York Dist., SC; CLINE, Charles 7 York Dist., SC.
A number of individuals post that the James S. DANIEL in the home of Charles S. CLINE is Charles' son; however, on the census page, James S. has DANIEL shown as a surname and a restart of the CLINE surname below him. I think James S. is a DANIEL.

In 1860, Charles S. CLINE and his wife, Cynthia DANIEL, live next door to Isaac ALLEN and his wife, Artemisia DANIEL, Cynthia's sister.

General Notes: Wife -

"Margaret CLINE married Morton CASSADY on March 19, 1843 in Washington Co., OH. Both gave their residence as Washington County and they settled outside of Marietta at Moss Run. This small community is located on SR 26 - the road to Woodsfield. After many years of searching, I still can't locate the names of her parents. Does anyone know if she is connected to the CLINEs of Monroe County? Millie" (Mildred Fry 24 Jul 2004, milliecovey@charter.net)

"Morton Cassady died in 1858 and in the 1860 census, Margaret Cline Cassady has six children aged 3 months - 16 years living with her." (Millie Covey Fry) Who then, are the parents of Nelson CASSADY?

"I have now seen two death records FOR children of Morton and Margaret CASSADY that give her maiden name as Margaret CLINE - William Lot Cassady and John Lucas CASSADY . Of course, the info on those two death records was provided by a person's spouse or a grandchild of Margaret CASSADY . That is two out of six children. I sent for a copy of Rebecca Cassady DAYHUFF's death record a few minutes ago so we will see if it lists a mother." (Millie Covey Fry, 3/22/2007)

SPECULATION: Nelson CASSADY was raised in the home of the widow, Margaret CASSADY. She may have taken him in if his parents or mother had perished soon after his birth, or he may have been Margaret's son by an as yet unknown father. There is always the possibility he may have been the son of one of Margaret's daughters. Although it may be wrong, to keep Nelson "in the family" he is carried by this compiler as a son of Margaret CASSADY and Unknown.

I have a copy of the November 3rd marriage record in front of me and the marriage was performed by S. S. McGee, Justice of Peace. A notice appeared in the September 9, 1875 Marietta Times stating that Margaret McElfresh filed a petition in the Office of the Clerk of Court of Common Pleas charging William McElfresh with adultery with one Mary Bruce and asked that she may be divorced and her former name of Cassady be restored. Robert and Mary are separated and probably divorced before 1870 when Mary is living in the household of her father, Charles S. CLINE as Mary J. WHITE, without husband or child. Robt P. WHITE, 39, likely her ex-husband, is in Clarenden County, South Carolina, married to Rebecca 28, and a daughter Henrietta P., age 12 (the daughter "H." in the 1860 census?), and an 11 year old son, P----- M. In 1880, Mary, divorced, still lives in her father's household.

There are two Robert WHITE families in the 1870 SC census the right age to be Robert P. WHITE. Robert with Agnes does not appear to be the Robert divorced from Mary J. CLINE. In the 1860 census, Robert and Mary have a daughter, H. WHITE (NOTE: Share this with Kay Quijada)

General Notes: Husband -

William H. POOLE, born about 1835, was the son of Edmund Augustus POOLE and Eleanor Amelia DANIEL. Might he have been named for Eleanor's brother, William H. DANIEL?

William H. POOLE married Martha Evelyn CLOUD in Lowndes County, Alabama on 21 January 1857.

1860 U.S. Census, Alabama, Lowndes County, Mt Willing P O; Series: M653 Roll: 14 Page: 627: 501 493 W. H. POOLE 27 M Planter 6400 23,828 AL; (next page, 628) M. E. POOLE 22 F SC; E. D. " 2 M AL; Emma " 1 F AL.

William A. POOLE served the Confederacy in the War Between the States in Company I, 45th Alabama Infantry. The company roster lists:
"Poole, William H. MR., April 2, 1862: Age 28; enlisted March 13, 1862, at Fort Deposit; enlisted by J.F. Clements. Clothing issued 1864."

The Confederate Monument at the Lowndes County courthouse, Hayneville, Alabama lists:
"POOL, William H. (Private, Company M, 6th Alabama Infantry Regiment) William H. Poole"

Although records indicate he was a private, his grave marker lists his rank as Sergeant. The 45th Alabam was almost totally destroyed in combat. William was likely promoted as others fell. He was wounded in the battle of Franklin, Tennessee, 30 Nov 1864, and later died of blood poison.

William's remains were reinterred into McGavock Confederate Cemetery, Franklin, Williamson County, Tennessee. The plot is marked by a concrete column with a C.S.A. emblem, the words "129 KILLED AT FRANKLIN" and "ALABAMA" at its base. His grave is marked with a concrete post which states simply:

General Notes: Husband -

"George Washington COKER married Elizabeth Evans MEADOWS 26 October 1865 in Hayneville, Alabama She was born 28 January 1848 in Lowndes County, Alabama, daughter of James and Ellen A. MEADOWS. Their children were William Crawford, born 11 November 1867; Francis Meadows, born 19 January 1869; Mary Jane (Mamie), born 6 March 1871; Martha (Mattie), born 17 March 1873; Walter James, born 21 December 1874; Elizabeth Evans (Bettie), born 16 June 1876; Birdie, born 3 January 1879; and Huldah Daniel (Babe), born 1880. George Washington COKER married his second wife Emma Cloud POOLE in December 1885. Their only child was George Washington COKER, Jr., born 19 December 1886. On 29 November 1884, Elizabeth (Bettie), wife of George Washington COKER, died at her home in Mount Willing, after a short illness, age about 38 years. The obituary in The Hayneville Examiner states: "Sister COKER united with the Baptist church in 1861, and was baptized by Reverend T. M. BAILEY. She was quite modest and retiring in manner, was a consistent Christian, a devoted wife, loving mother, and good neighbor." George Washington COKER died at his home in Tuckabatchee Station 13 May 1929. Mrs. E. D. SCARBROUGH of Hayneville wrote the following: "On Monday, May 13th 1929, Mr. Geo. W. COKER, aged 84 years, died at his home in Tallassee and was buried at his old home, Mt. Willing, Al., in Lowndes Co., May 15th. He was born in Benton, Al. and spent the greater part of his life in Lowndes. At the early age of 16 years he enlisted in the Confederate Army and belonged to Co., D. 7th Al. Calvary, Forest's Brigade. Though just a lad, he was soon made Sgt. and none served more gallantly or loved the "Lost Cause" more than he. He reared a large family, who contributed much to the stable citizenship of Al. His devotion to his family and his loyalty to his friends, and his unflagging zeal in the service of his church, were the outward expressions of the inward reality of a noble character, built upon the basic principles of justice and truth. His death marks the passing of a great man, great because he was good. He was a most devout member of the Baptist Church and though gone, his influence will long be felt in the church he served so faithfully and so well. "George Washington COKER was the only descendant of William COKER known to have children. William Crawford COKER (son of G. W. and Elizabeth) married Celeste STEINHART. Their children were Albert and Pauline. William Crawford died in Greenville, Alabama 12 June 1948." (By Beth Jones Gay of Auburn, Alabama , as received from John M. Coker, Jr., 3/22/2007.)

General Notes: Wife -

Curiously, Elizabeth Evans MEADOWS, about age 2, is not listed in the family of James MEADOWS and Eleanor A. DANIEL in the 1850 census of Lowndes County, Alabama.

"On 29 November 1884, Elizabeth (Bettie), wife of George Washington Coker, died at her home in Mount Willing, after a short illness, age about 38 years. The obituary in The Hayneville Examiner states: 'Sister Coker united with the Baptist church in 1861, and was baptized by Reverend T. M. Bailey. She was quite modest and retiring in manner, was a consistent Christian, a devoted wife, loving mother, and good neighbor.'"

Elizabeth's grave in Mount Willing Cemetery provides an alternate date, 3 November 1884, for her death. It is indexed as: "COKER, Elizabeth Evans Meadows, 1st wife of George W.Coker, Sr., 1-26-1848, 11-3-1884" (http://files.usgwarchives.org/al/lowndes/cemeteries/mtwill.txt)
