General Notes: Wife - Flora Frances COOPER

Obituary: Flora Frances (Cooper) Stonebraker, 82, died peacefully at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at Akron General Hospital, with her family by her side. She was preceded in death this past year by her younger sister, Nita (Cooper) McCain of Okolona, Miss.; brother, Forrest Graham Cooper Jr. of Indianola, Miss.; and older sister, Elizabeth (Cooper) Prichard of Inverness, Miss.
Frannie was born in Indianola, Miss., and enjoyed visiting family and longtime friends there. Her father, Forrest Graham Cooper Sr., was a prominent attorney and civic leader and her mother, Marguerite Chadwick Park, taught English at Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss., where her most celebrated student was Eudora Welty.
After high school in Indianola, she attended Moorhead Junior College, where she was a cheerleader. She transferred to and graduated in 1944 from Mississippi State College for Women with a degree in education. Frannie moved to Atlanta, where she was one of the first stewardesses for Delta Airlines. In 1946, she married Charles "Stony" Stonebraker of Belmont, Ohio, at the Indianola Baptist Church in Mississippi, and moved to Akron in 1948. She had a son, Everett Charles Stonebraker, in 1948, and a daughter, Rita Elizabeth Stonebraker, in 1950. She was a beloved English teacher for 17 years at Firestone Park Elementary School and Litchfield Middle School. In Akron, she became an active member of the High Street Christian Church in 1950. She was active in many charitable and civic organizations, including Akron General Medical Center Women's Board and Service League and the Ladies Oriental Shrine Kadesh Court 19. She was also a member of the Akron Woman's City Club. For the last four decades of her life, she loved spending summers at her summer home, Southern Comfort, in Monteagle, Tenn., which she shared with her two sisters, Nita McCain and Liber Prichard, and their families. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and beloved by all who knew her. Her gentle soul touched the lives of every person who crossed her path and she knew no stranger. Her positive approach to life was a shining example to her family and friends. Surviving Frannie are her husband, Charles Everett Stonebraker of Akron; her daughter, Rita Elizabeth Howard, son-in-law, Charles Edwin Howard, granddaughters, Ashley Elizabeth Howard, Katherine Cooper Howard, and Emily Frances Howard, all of Akron; and her son, Everett Charles Stonebraker, daughter-in-law, Anne Marie Grealy, and grandson, Matthew Graham Stonebraker of Coral Gables, Fla.

The memorial presents this obituary:
February 2, 1921 issue of "The LaFayette Sun":
Dr. William O. Trammell, aged 63 years, died last Sunday morning at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. H. E. Watkins, 423 Luckie St., Atlanta, Ga. He is survived by three sons - Messrs. J. C., W. R., and W. O. Trammell, Jr.; two daughters - Mrs. H. L. Moseley, of Havana, Cuba, and Mrs. H. E. Watkins, of Atlanta. Dr. Trammell was born at LaFayette, Alabama and moved to Atlanta about 1890 to attend the Atlanta Medical College, from which he graduated in 1893. He began the practice of his profession at once, and in 1897 organized the Trammell Drug Co., at the corner of Marietta and Hunnicut Streets. He continued in business there until 1914, when his faith failed. He left Atlanta and for a number of years made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Moseley, in Havana, Cuba. He had a large circle of friends in this section who will regret to learn of his death.

The memorial links those for his parents, Francis Asbury Trammell (1825 - 1896) and Martha Olive Melton Trammell (1830 - 1891), his wife, Flora Cooper Trammell (1864 - 1917), two children and two siblings.

General Notes: Husband - William GUNNELL

FAMILY LORE: William Gunnell of Westmoreland County, Va. seems to have been the first of his family to settle in what is now Fairfax County. He would become the progenitor of most Gunnells in America before 1800. In 1729, he received three land grants on the Northern Neck of Virginia, then encompassing all of what is now Northern Virginia. His grants totalled 1616 acres in what was Stafford County and later became Fairfax County. Below Difficult Run he received 966 acres, on "Pinimentts Run" he recieved 400 acres, along with 250 acres below the headwaters of "Pinimentts Run." William Gunnell and his two sons, William and Henry were recorded on the 1744 poll list for the election of Burgess from Fairfax County. William Gunnell died in 1760, his will proved on 19 September 1780. His will names his children, but not his wife, whose identity is still in question. In the will of Richard Henry Lee, witnessed by Martha Gunnell, among the inventory of his property "in the quarter" are William Gunnell, Martha Gunnell, Mary Gunnell, and Wiliam Gunnell Jr. She may have been Martha Gunnell, a woman with whom William Gunnell was indentured to the Lee Family of Virginia. She is possibly a Corbin because of its repetion on the lines of Jonathan Gunnell of Bedford. Persons were indentured by the Lees in their succesfull attempt to break down the feudal headright system, and establish the Proprietorship of the Northern Neck. Men like William Gunnell were 'foot-soldiers,' who owed allegiance not to the headright, but to their indenturer. Thus they could expect to earn a position in society and more importantly, land. The provisions of his will, the inventory of his estate suggest that he was, by the standards of his day, wealthy. His will, signed with his mark as he could not read or write, is testament to how far one could rise through the system on indentured servitude-if you were of political value to the indenturer. From the "History of Truro Parish" by Rev. Philip Slaughter, D.D. come this passages: "...the Parish of Truro, which extended along the Potomac from the mouth of the Occoquan to the Blue Ridge, including what are now the parishes of Truro, Cameron, Fairfax and Shelburne [These are Colonial Parishes. Those of more recent foundation in the same territory are Johns, Upper Truro, McGill and a part of Meade.] Within this territory there were three churches, Occoquan, William Gunnells, and a chapel "above Goose Creek." and "At the next meeting- of the Vestry, held March 26, 1733, John STURMAN and Giles TILLETT were added to the Vestry, and there were present also Francis AUBREY and William GODFREY, not previously mentioned. It was "Ordered, that the Churchwardens give publick notice to workmen to appear at the next Vestry to be held for this parish to agree for the building of a Church at the cross roads near Michael REAGAN's in this parish." At the meeting on April 16, 1733, Michael ASHFORD took the oaths and subscribed the test as a Vestryman. An agreement was made with the Rev.
