Biographical Note
Raiford Kemp Malone, educator and scholar, was born March 14, 1889, in Minter, Mississippi, and died October 13, 1971, in Eastport, Maine. He was a graduate of Emory College (1907) and became a professor at Johns Hopkins University (1924-1956). A medievalist and world authority on Chaucer, he was also an etymologist and the author of over 500 works. Malone was often consulted in legal proceedings as an expert witness on the derivations, meaning, and usage of words. He was working on a "History of the English Language" at the time of his death. Malone served as president of the Modern Language Association, the Linguistic Society of America, and several other societies.

Repository: Special Collections, University of Virginia Library
Accession number: 2935-p
Malone Brothers Letters 1917-1919
Physical Characteristics: This collection consists of 30 items.
"There are very few letters from Kemp during this period. In September 1918 he wrote from the Personnel Office about the family's move to Tennessee, one of his articles being published in Modern Philology, and not anticipating being sent overseas. And, in a letter dated "Wednesday," he wrote to his brother Miles concerning his (the former's) dilemma of accepting a National Guard comission as opposed to a National Army comission. In addition, there are three letters, 1948-1953, from Kemp to his mother, including some mention of his work as a philologist."

Kemp Malone
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kemp Malone (Minter, Mississippi , March 14, 1889 -October 13, 1971 ) was a prolific medievalist, etymologist, philologist, and specialist in Chaucer who was lecturer and then professor of English Literature at Johns Hopkins University from 1924 to 1956.
Born in an academic family, Kemp Malone graduated from Emory College as it then was in 1907, with the ambition of mastering all the languages that impinged upon the development of Middle English. He spent several years in Germany, Denmark and Iceland. When World War I broke out he served two years in the United States Army and was discharged with the rank of Captain.
Malone served as President of the Modern Language Association, and other philological associations (see link) and was etymology editor of the American College Dictionary, 1947. He resisted the views of Old English poetry as products of a purely oral tradition . He contended that we must look to poets' individual elaboration of traditional structures: "A given poet was reckoned worthy if he handled with skill the stuff of which, by convention, poems must be made" (Malone, "The old tradition: poetic form" in A Literary History of England, Albert C. Baugh, editor, p. 31)
His interests ranged from 10th century manuscripts to the etymology of contemporary comic strip names. American speech, the English language, the historical Arthur (his suggestion was the Roman dux Lucius Artorius Castus ), Caedmon and Beowulf (he edited a facsimile of the Thorkelin transcripts, 1951), Deor - all were subjects among his hundreds of publications. He edited and translated a large corpus of medieval poetry: Widsith from the Exeter Book (1936). A sample of his production is Ten Old English Poems put into Modern English alliterative verse, The Johns Hopkins Press; Baltimore 1941
His library, given to Emory University, carries his name as a memorial. His papers (30 document boxes) were deposited in 1983 at Johns Hopkins University (Ms 129).

"Cora Cheney PARTRIDGE, a children's book author and feminist who was one of the first women to become an Episcopal priest, died on Sunday in her home in Tacoma Park, Md. She was 82.
The cause was a stroke, her family said.
While rearing four children and following her husband, Benjamin W. PARTRIDGE Jr., through his assignments as a Navy officer from the United States to the Philippines to Iceland, Mrs. PARTRIDGE wrote ''Skeleton Cave,'' published in 1954.
A story about a boy who finds Indian relics near his house, ''Skeleton Cave'' was the most popular and enduring of Mrs. PARTRIDGE 's 15 children's novels, said her daughter Marika PARTRIDGE of Tacoma Park, a director of ''All Things Considered,'' the National Public Radio program.
''We were amazed to get a fan letter, from a grown man no less, just last month,'' Ms. PARTRIDGE said.
After Mrs. PARTRIDGE's children had grown, she took new interest in her Episcopal faith.
Mr. PARTRIDGE said that as he and his wife were sailing in the Gulf of Mexico one day in 1979, she told him, ''When you die, I think I want to go into the priesthood.''
Mr. PARTRIDGE, who had previously suffered heart problems, remembered that he had gulped and then replied, ''Why wait until I die?''
After Mrs. PARTRIDGE was ordained in 1982, Mr. PARTRIDGE followed her to postings in Vermont, Delaware and Florida. In holding services for shut-ins, she used a portable altar that a son had fashioned from an ironing board. And while in Tallahassee, Fla., she helped organize an abortion rights demonstration led by elderly women wearing their Sunday finest and carrying parasols.
In addition to her husband and daughter, Mrs. PARTRIDGE is survived by another daughter, Denny PARTRIDGE of New York; two sons, B. Waring PARTRIDGE of Far Hills, N.J., and Alan PARTRIDGE of South Windham Vt.; two sisters, Christine Cheney OTIS of Vashon, Wash., and Linna Cheney WHITE of Yuma, Ariz., and nine grandchildren." Fairfield Recorder - Tuesday March 14, 2006 edition:
"Fairfield Loses Icon Doris Daniel's Coconut Pie" by Ed Pittman
We were saddened to hear of the recent passing of Doris Daniel of Fairfield. Below is a "Past Times" article written by a former classmate that was first published in the "Times" on June 1, 2004. Mrs. Daniel will be sorely missed in Freestone county. (See Page 8-B for obituary).
Most people in Fairfield and Freestone County know bits and pieces about SAM'S BARBECUE. We older folks remember that it got started off in a low rent building with a sawdust floor located a couple of blocks south of the intersection of highways 84 and 75. We remember that it was an introduction to many diners of genuine barbecued brisket, to both locals and travelers as well.
And some remember that for a short while Sammie Daniel and his family gave it up, only to re-introduce the place as Sam's Original a short distance up the road, this time with a solid floor. Later Sam followed the flow of traffic and set up shop on the west side of I-45 and from there it was truly discovered by the traveling public as the place to stop between Dallas and Houston. All thiswas before Ponte and the family opened the present site east of I-45, which caters to travelers and locals all day, seven days a week. Mention to someone in Dallas or Houston that you are from Fairfield and likely they will want to talk about SAM'S.
But, to quote a famous commentator, now for the rest of the story.
Sammie was a professional restaurant man before he introduced barbecue, and he had a flair for pleasing the customers. His young bride, Doris Childs Daniel, as a young girl, had picked up the family receipes handed down by her mother, Willie Mae Weaver Childs, and her grandmother, Mrs. Noah Weaver. Sam saw the light in the coconut pie with the extra meringue that Doris could turn out, consistently good and consistently popular. He introduced the pie as a finishing touch to a good meal. In no time at all he found himself competing with Doris as to which was the big attraction, his barbecue or her coconut pie. After over fourty years, the contest is still ongoing.
The menu at Sam's has been expanded over the years to satisfy all types of pallets, from robust to calorie counting, but most knowledgeable customers save a little space for a piece of that coconut pie Sam's turns out so well. Most people don't know that for a long time, Doris, Sam's wife and now widow, made the pies herself. She is now the occasional supervisor, just to check that it is still done right. After all, a family recipe's quality must be maintained.
Doris grew up a short distance from Fairfield, attended Fairfield schools and graduated, Class of 1942. One of her many accomplishments is serving as hostess of the annual homecomings of this Class of '42, which with one exception due to a funeral has met each year since 1984.
If you haven't tried the coconut pie at Sam's, you owe yourself a try-on.

DORIS CHILDS DANIEL, 81, of Fairfield, passed away Thursday, March 9, 2006. A 1942 Graduate of Fairfield High School, Doris was known for her mile-high meringue pies.

"Lodowick H Robison was born in Wilcox Co, AL, on May 3, 1828, and died at Forest Home in Butler County, AL, on Oct 13, 1882. He married Frances Williamina (Fannie) Christian on Feb 5, 1852. She was born in Butler County. I don't know off hand when Lod moved to Forest Home, but his son, John Lark Robison, was born there January 23, 1865. I don't have the places of the births of most his other children and am missing most of their birth dates as well. Perhaps his Civil War record would show which county he enlisted from, so we would know if he had moved to Butler County by the 1860 census. I would not be surprised both Lod and Fannie were living in Butler County in 1870 and 1880, and that Fannie continued to live there until her death on May 7, 1919." (Gil Robison, email, 11/11/2004))
