General Notes: Husband - Nelson CASADY

The parents of Nelson CASSADY are not known. He is three months old in the 1860 census, born about February 1860, living in the home of Margaret CASSADY, widow of Morton CASSADY who died 12 May 1858, too early to be the father of Nelson, conceived in 1859. Nelson is age 10 in the 1870 census still in the home of Margaret CASSADY.

SPECULATION: Nelson CASSADY was raised in the home of the widow, Margaret CASSADY. She may have taken him in if his parents or mother had perished soon after his birth, or he may have been Margaret's son by an as yet unknown father. There is always the possibility he may have been the son of one of Margaret's daughters. Although it may be wrong, to keep Nelson "in the family" he is carried by this compiler as a son of Margaret CASSADY and Unknown.

Nelson CASSADY married Eva "Evie" E. HALL on 22 January 1880. Evie was a daughter of Martin Luther HALL and Margaret HARRIS.
1880 U.S. Census, Ohio, Washington County, Lawrence; Series: T9 Roll: 1075 Page: 179: 203 204 CASSADY Nelson W M 20 M Laborer OH ?? ??; -- Evie W F 18 Wife M Keeping house OH ?? ??; -- Charles E. W M 1/12 May Son S OH ?? ??.

Eva Hall CASSADY died on April 28, 1886 and is buried in the Newport Cemetery near her Hall family in Washington County, Ohio. After Evie's death, Nelson moved west. What happened to his son, Charles E., is not known.

In 1900, Nelson is a gold miner in Black Hawk, Colorado. He has remarried to Lulla (or Luella) and has a young daughter. Nelson's son, Charles E., who should be 20, is not living with him. Nelson and Lulla married about 1894 when Nelson was 34 and Luella 17. They probably wed in Missouri, where Maryline was born. Nelson age in the 1900 census is off by three years (aided by the difference his and Lulla's ages?), but his birth month in Ohio, as is where his parents were born, is correct.

General Notes: Wife - Eva E. HALL

"Eva E. HALL was the daughter of Margaret HARRIS (b. Nov. 12, 1820 in VA) and Martin Luther HALL (b. May 18, 1821 in OH). Eva HALL was born on Feb. 26, 1862 in Washington Co., OH. She married Nelson CASSADY on Jan. 22, 1880 in Washington Co., OH. They had a son Charles E. CASSADY born during 1880. The three are in Lawrence Twp., Washington Co., OH and Nelson is a laborer. In the 1880 census, Nelson's father is listed as being born in VA. Of course we don't know if Nelson or Eva gave the info to the census taker. Bessie GUMM of Moss Run, Washington Co., OH wrote that Eva Hall CASSADY died on April 28, 1886 and is buried in the Newport Cemetery near her Hall family. In her 1996 Query, Bessie said that she has a photo of three named as Hall family - Charles, Ed and Ada. I contacted Bessie in 2002 and she doesn't know what happened to Nelson CASSADY.
In 2002 I contacted Linda Hall SHOWALTER who works at Marietta College. Her grandmother used to visit my Mom, a distant cousin, in Canton many years ago. Linda wrote that "Eva HALL was the sister of great-grandfather, Lycurgus Clifford HALL. Eva Hall CASSADY is buried in the Newport Cemetery with a stone that has the name HALL as its primary inscription. It reads, Eva CASSADY, Dau. of M. & M. HALL, born Feb. 26, 1862, died April 28, 1886. Her spirit smiles on that bright shore, and softly whispers weep no more.' Eva's brother Albert is buried next to her. He died January 25, 1862, when only 10 years old...nor have I been able to trace what happened to Nelson and his son Charles after the death of Eva. They just disappeared from all local records. The Hall family seems to have been experiencing a series of misfortunate events in the mid-1880s. Eva's brother Aristotle lost a leg in an accident about 1886, and her parents sold their Newport farm in 1889, supposedly to help pay his medical bills." (Millie Covey Fry)

Henry Cassady married Elizabeth McCadden on March 2, 1847. Both listed their residence as Washington County. Do you know which township Elizabeth and Henry resided in before their 1847 marriage? I did not find a Henry Cassady in the 1850 Washington Co., OH census. Where did they live after their marriage? When / where was their daughter Henrietta Cassady born? When / where did Henry die?
I am descended from Nancy and Lucas Cassady of Lawrence Twp., in eastern Washington County. A number of their known children married during the 1840s. We are still attempting to identify one son.
On June 4, 1859, an Elizabeth Cassady married William Slaughter. When did they move to Tazewell Co., IL?

Message Board Post: I am trying to learn everything I can about Elizabeth McCaddon b. 1821. Married a Henry Cassidy or possibly Cassiday about 1840 they had a daughter, Henrietta. Henry Cassidy died suddenly sometime right after the birth of the child. Would like any newspaper or obit info on Henry Cassidy as well as a marriage record for Henry and Margaret. She later remarried a Wm. Slaughter and moved to Tazewell County, ILL.

General Notes: Wife - Sarah Jane CASSADY

Sarah Jane was a daughter of Morton Casady and Margaret Cline. Morton died in 1858.

1860 U.S. Census, Ohio, Washington County, Lawrence Twp., Lower Lawrence P. O.; Series: M653 Roll: 1048 Page: 17: Margaret Cassady 37 OH; Sarah J. 16 OH...

Sarah Jane Cassady became the second wife of David Snodgrass. They married in 1862.

"Last fall I located the old farm house where Sarah Jane Cassady and David Snodgrass lived in Comb, Ritchie Co., WV. An elderly distant cousin showed me the house in 1969 but I couldn't recall the exact location. In October, the President of Ritchie County showed me a 1910 map that showed where it was located and he gave me really good directions. So surprised that the house was still standing and a family lives in it today - pays $10 per month rent and gets free natural gas.
Walter Carpenter, the 90 year old President of the Pleasants County Historical Society, showed me around St. Marys in December. In 1969 I took a photo of Sarah and David's house in St. Marys." (Millie Covey Fry)

General Notes: Wife - Nancy Josephine McCREIGHT

Nancy McCREIGHT married William M. CARTHCART in York County, South Carolina before 1844. She and William had seven children and were operating a hotel in Ocala, Florida before the War Between the States. William died in 1862. Nancy remarried to Capt. William Brinton HOOKER in Ocala, Florida on 20 March 1864.

"Captain Hooker tried to remain active in local affairs, attending Democratic party and railroad meetings. However, his health was declining and for a time he drank heavily, no doubt saddened by the financial reverses of the post-war years. He and his wife Nancy separated in early 1869, when she released her dower rights in his estate in exchange for notes in the amount of $2,400." (http://www.lamartin.com/history/hooker/william_hooker.htm)

Nancy was widowed on 11 June 1871.

Nancy, as CATHCART or HOOKER, has not been located in later censuses by this researcher.

PROBLEM? A Nancy CATHCART is named in the 1900 census of Winnsboro, Fairfield County, South Carolina whose census infomation is used for Nancy Josephine McCREIGHT who married William M. CATHCART. William died in 1862 and would not have been the father of the William M. born June 1866. Children listed with her do not match other children as named in her family in the 1860 census of Marion County, Florida. Nancy remarried in 1864 to a William Brinton HOOKER. The marriage may have soured early; William HOOKER, 69, is named without Nancy in 1870 and has two children with him from what would have been an earlier marriage. Additionally, the 1880 census of Fairfield County, lists Nancy, 52, as wife of John H. CATHCART, 54, and mother of Wm. M., 14, who is in the 1900 household of Nancy CARTHCART of Winnsborough. It does not appear that Nancy CATHCART in 1900 is the widow of William M. CATHCART, 1822-1862.

General Notes: Husband - John J. UNDERWOOD

UNDERWOOD, JOHN J. 1796-1864 LOWNDES
John J. Underwood, one of the early county officers in both Irwin and Lowndes counties and also an early practictioner of law in this section, was born in this state Oct. 11, 1796, a son of John G. and Constant Underwood. His parents were among the first settlers of Laurens County, his father dying there intestate in 1820. He was married in that county, Jan. 25, 1821. to Sarah King Cawthorn, a daughter of Stephen Cawthorn, Sr. The latter died in Laurens County in 1820, leaving two children, Sarah and Stephen, Jr. Mrs. Underwood was born Oct. 15, 1800, in Georgia, and died at her home in Jasper, Fla., in 1886. Born to John G. and Sarah Underwood were nine children:
1. Mary A. G. b. Oct,. 29, 1821, m. J. S. Darsey.
2. Sarah N. C. b. Oct. 28, 1823, in. Henry J. Stewart, Mar. 19, 1846.
3. Harriet M. C. b. Jan. 23, 1826, m. Francis M. Selph, June 6, 1854.
4. Jane E. T. b. Sept. 24, 1828, never m. Died 1914.
5. Georgia A. W. b. Dec. 13, 1831, never m. Died 1899.
6. John H. T. b. Feb. 6, 1834, died Oct. 7. 1836.
7. James M. b. Jan. 19, 1837, never m. Died April 26, 1870.
8. Frances A. b. Nov. 9, 1840, m.- Dr. John Patterson of Brooks County.
9. William H. b. Apr. 4, 1843, never m. Died Sept. 22, 1870.
Soon after marriage, Mr. Underwood and his wife removed from Laurens County and settled in Irwin County, the portion In which they located being then Irwin but in 1825 was cut into Lowndes In its formation, and in 1856 into Berrien in its formation. His homeplace was where the town of Nashville, Berrien County, Is situated. He was elected a Justice of Inferior court of Irwin County In 1825, the year Lowndes was created, and served until 1827, In the act creating Lowndes out of Irwin, approved Dee, 24, 1825, he was named one of the commissioners to lay out and organize the new county, He served as a Justice of the Inferior Court of Lowndes County, 1829-1833 and again in 1837-38. He also served in the Lowndes County militia as Major, 138th Battalion, 1826-1834. He was Justice of Peace, 658th district, 1834-35.
He was admitted to the bar at the January Term, 1836, of Irwin Superior Court, and continued in the practice of law until his death nearly thirty years later. Following his admission to the bar he decided to move to the then-county site of his county, which was a new town that had just been laid out, and was named Troupville. He lived there and practiced law until 1849 when he sold out his holdings there and moved to Jasper, Florida, where he continued in his chosen profession. He had been at the last election for county officers held in January, 1834, elected Sheriff of Lowndes County. His term as Sheriff expired two years later, followed by his admission to the bar and his removal to Troupville, all in the same year.
Mr. and Mrs. Underwood were members of the Methodist Church, first at old Troupville, then on removing to Jasper they became charter members of the newly-formed Methodist Church there. He served as steward for a number of years. His death occurred at his elegant home in Jasper, Nov. 3, 1864, and he was survived by his wife and eight children. Mr. and Mrs. Underwood were buried in the Jasper town cemetery.
His maiden sister, Miss Constance Underwood, who was never married, made her home with her brother and family until her death in Jasper, about 1885. Lowndes A. Darsey, a grandson, became a Methodist minister of some note, serving principally in the Alabama Conference. The two sons of Judge Underwood, who lived to be grown, died in their young manhood, unmarried, so that no descendants through the male line are to be found now. James M. Underwood, one of these sons, became a lawyer like his father and bid fair to equal if not surpass his father in legal attainments, when he died in April, 1870, at the age of 33 years; he was followed in death in September of the same year by his brother, William H., who had graduated from a medical college and had just returned home to begin his profession at the age of 27. A son-in-law, Henry J. Stewart, became County Judge of Hamilton County, and served in that office many years. (Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia, by Judge Folks Huxford, provided by Teresa Griffis)

Obituary: Elma Mallory Chaffin, April 12, 1936 - May 8, 2013
Elma Mallory Chaffin passed away peacefully on Wednesday May 8, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on April 12,1936 in Memphis, Tennessee to Ned and Elizabeth Scott Mallory. Raised in Forrest City, Arkansas, she attended Forrest City High School and Mississippi State College for Women, before later graduating proudly with honors as a "non-traditional" student with a BA in Education from Arkansas State University. She began to teach 2nd grade at Marvell Elementary in 1993. She loved encouraging her students and they loved her. Her teaching career was shortened by her fierce battle with cancer. Through her strength of will and zest for life, she beat all odds conquering her cancer diagnosis 19 years ago. Elma was an involved member of the Marianna community. She was active in her church and showed great enthusiasm for the Bible as a Sunday school teacher. She was an avid reader and gardener. She truly enjoyed the company of her dear friends and remained active in both P.E.O. and bridge club. Elma will be treasured in memory as a strong Southern woman, a doting wife and loving mother to all her children, daughters to great grand. She is survived by her loving and dedicated husband of 59 years, Martin Chaffin; her daughters, Elizabeth Gibson (Tim) and Mallory Chaffin of Athens, Georgia; grandchildren Laura Gibson Smith (Wilson) and Annabelle Sachs and great-granddaughter Vera Elizabeth Smith; her sister Mary Ned Foster (Winston); nephew Jay Van Dover (Tracey) and niece, Mallory Van Dover (Brian Cato); and a host of beautiful loving family. A memorial service will be held at The First United Methodist Church in Marianna Arkansas at 2 p.m. on Saturday May 11th. Roller Citizens Funeral Home in Marianna will provide arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be given in Elma’s honor to: The First United Methodist Church of Marianna, 59 South Poplar, Marianna, Arkansas 72360.
