Raiford Pittamn posts:
"My great grandfather, Robert Andrew RAIFORD, Sr. married Cora Lea CANON, great granddaughter of John CANON, Sr. and, according to a Hope/Canon oral history, Martha ALEXANDER, the sister or dau. of John McKnitt ALEXANDER - or as another researcher suggests, John married Martha ADDISON. John CANON, Sr. and Martha are both buried in the Hopewell Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Cabarrus County, NC. Martha's middle initial is A. as confirmed by a telephone call to the church staff in June, 2001. I believe that John Sr.'s wife was probably Martha ADDISON since their son married a daughter of Ann Alexander and Moses H. Moore. Ann Alexander was a sister of John M. ALEXANDER, who, with sister Jemima A. SHARPE, witnessed Moses Moore's will.
Her grandfather, John CANON, Jr. married Mary (Polly) Scott MOORE, (Cabarrus Co., NC) dau. of Moses MOORE and Ann ALEXANDER, John McKnitt ALEXANDER'S sister. Cora Lea CANON'S parent's were Alfred Orville CANON (first married to Elizabeth HOPE in NC) and Esther M. STINSON (Marshall Co., MS, Apr. 1852). Cora Lea CANON married my great grandfather, Robert Andrew RAIFORD, Jr.. My grandfather, Robert Canon RAIFORD married Katherine "Kate" SHAW, daughter of Dr. William Lafayette SHAW and Catherine MCFADYEN. "Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 4th ed., 1887. Madison County.
COL. WILLIAM H. CAPERTON was born on King's branch of Muddy Creek, in Madison County, Ky., in March 1708.... Woods CAPERTON rests by the side of his distinguished father. His sister, Mary P. CAPERTON, was a woman of splendid sense and a well balanced mind. Her womanly charms and graces were many and rare. In person she was of splendid form; she was a true and splendid woman in every respect- kind to all and popular with all; she made lasting friends wherever she was; she was a pure Christian woman, devoted and affectionate, calm and submissive to adversity, sorrow and affliction. She married Leonidas B. TALBOTT, better known as Lee TALBOTT, a brother of the Hon. Albert G. TALBOTT, formerly a member of Congress from Kentucky. She died a number of years ago in Lexington, Ky., leaving an only child, a son, Wm. C. TALBOTT, named after his grandfather, Col. CAPERTON. She was a member of the Methodist Church and truly devoted to her church and religious faith, and died as a true Christian woman in the faith of her adoption. Her only child and son, Wm. C. TALBOTT, was twice married; the first time to Miss Zerelda Baxter, a highly worthy and handsome daughter of Milo Baxter, a highly respected farmer of Madison County, Ky. She survived but a sort time after her marriage without leaving children. Subsequently he married Miss Annie French, the only child and daughter of Dr. Robert French, an eminent physician and farmer, of Madison County, Ky. Mrs. Annie French Talbott is a splendid woman and wife in every respect, intelligent, domestic and affectionate, and fulfills all the duties of a wife, mother, neighbor, friend to the poor and humble, black and white; her kindness of heart is well known and highly appreciated. They have an only child, a beautiful, bright, intelligent and affectionate daughter, Miss Clyde Talbott, now about seven years old, of sweet disposition and temper, and, young as she is, kind, tender in her feelings, and considerate of the feelings and wants of others, and with her playmates sharing her little gifts freely and equally with all. Her father and mother are very proud and fond of her, and watch her growth and intellectual training with vigilant, watchful care and love. Her father, Wm. C. Talbott, was during the late war sent by his grandfather, Col Caperton, to the United States Naval Academy, then at Annapolis, Md. Subsequently the school was removed to Newport, R.I., where he remained several years and became a midshipman, and had several cruises in the Mediterranean in the United States naval training ships, and on board United States revenue vessels. He finally resigned his position in the United States naval service, came home, and engaged in other business pursuits, all of which were honorably, faithfully and intelligently performed. His mother died when he was a child, and his grandfather, Col. Caperton, brought him home with him to Richmond, Ky., from Lexington, Ky., and reared and educated him and made him one of the family. the full equal of and the same in all respects as his other children. He is very affectionate and kind and devoted to his wife and child; no want or desire of either is ever uncared for. He is a kind neighbor and true friend, and of the highest order of intelligence and very popular, and greatly liked by all who know him. His latchstring is always out, and his hospitality well known and greatly appreciated. His house is a welcome home, always open to his friends, and none, whether known or not, no matter how poor, humble or destitute, are ever turned away, but are well entertained, and willingly so, too. When his grandfather, Col. Caperton, died, his uncle, Col. J.W. Caperton took charge of and raised him and finished his education, and he made that his home until his first marriage. He now resides with his wife and child on a farm, a beautiful home near the Red House Depot, on the Kentucky Central Railroad, in Madison County, Ky." Herbert married Fleta Carter before 1940. Herbert Carswell Carr registered for the draft in McIntyre, Wilkinson County, Georgia in 1940. He was age 29, born 27 December 1910 in Rhine, [Dodge County]Georgia. He was employed by Edgar Bros. Kaolin Co. in McIntyre. The person who would always know his address was Mrs. Fleta Carr, wife, of McIntyre, Georgia. ["Georgia World War II Draft Registration Cards, 1940-1945,"]

The marriage appears to have been short-lived. The 1940 census lists Herbert, widowed, residing with his mother.

General Notes: Wife - Virginia TOOTLE

Obituary: Virginia Tootle Carr of Statesboro, Ga., died peacefully at home May 16, 2007. She was 82. Born in Tattnall County, she graduated from Reidsville High School in 1939 at age 15. She wanted to become a nurse, but was not yet old enough to enter training, so she stayed home for the next three years in anticipation of nursing school. As the second among two girls and three boys, she had much to do helping to care for family. Her life took a big turn when the United States entered World War II. Mrs. Carr went to work as a lab technician at Warner Robbins Army Air Base in Georgia, then transferred to the chemistry labs of the Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. There she met and married Herbert Carswell Carr of MacIntyre, Ga., who was working on the uranium production lines. After the war they moved to Ohio when Herbert accepted a job as a production manager in a chemical plant. She and Herbert raised a son, Thomas, made many friends, participated actively in school and church, and lived happily until Herbert's death in 1973.The next year, she returned to Georgia. After earning a degree in accounting at Swainsboro Technical College, she spent 20 years managing offices and keeping books for Statesboro businesses, ranging from a clothier to a commercial landscaper to a law firm. She was very active in Business and Professional Women and a member of the Bulloch County Historical Society. An avid birdwatcher, she traipsed the woods, river banks, and marshes with the Briar Creek Birders. She went with her friends to cultural events at Georgia Southern University and to the symphony in Savannah. She traveled often to East Lansing, Mich., to visit her son, his wife Denise, and her grandchildren, Michael and Elizabeth. Her warmth and vitality attracted everyone she met - it would be impossible to count the times that Tom and Denise have been asked "How's your mom? When's she coming to visit?" Church life was important to her. In Ohio, she and Herbert attended Perry United Methodist Church and she remained a member her whole life. In Statesboro, she joined Langston United Methodist Church, where she served as president of the United Methodist Women for many years. She enjoyed the fellowship of the Carol Carter Circle of another Statesboro church, First United Methodist. She was known for her leadership, her knack of crafting devotionals that cut to the heart of life and faith, and her lemon bars - she thought that good fellowship and good food go hand in hand. As a member of the Friends of Old Shiloh Cemetery, she helped restore to its former beauty a cemetery in Tattnall County where many Tootles are buried. Virginia was a pillar of strength in her family, dedicated to her community, and always willing to do for others. She is survived by her son, Tom and his wife, Denise; her grandson, Michael, and his wife Ruth of Montague, Mass.; granddaughter, Elizabeth of Ithaca, N.Y.; sister, Martha T. Cain of Statesboro, with whom she lived for the last 18 months of her life; sister-in-law, Hilda Baxter Tootle of Reidsville, Ga.; brother-in-law, Iverson Carr of Rome, Ga.; a number of treasured nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends in Georgia, Ohio, and Michigan, all of whom she loved dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents; Robert Hartridge Tootle Sr. and Veta Ross Tootle; her husband Herbert; and three brothers, Robert Hartridge Tootle Jr., Jerry Paul Tootle, and Charles Henry Tootle. Virginia will be buried beside Herbert in Perry Township Cemetery in Perry, Ohio, at 7 p.m. Friday, May 25, 2007. Rev. Keith Mostad will officiate at services. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Perry United Methodist Church, 3875 Main Street, Perry, OH 44081. Arrangements are being handled by The Behm Family Funeral Home and Crematory of Madison. [http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/news-herald/]

"It is made our unpleasant duty to announce the killing, on Saturday last, of Mr. Seaton Grantland by his father-in-law, Dr. W. W. Carr. An inquest was held on Sunday - the jury being composed of some of the best citizens of the county - and a verdict of justifiable homicide was rendered. To satisfy the friends of both parties - who are of the highest responsibility and largely connected with many of the oldest and best families of the State and country - we deem it necessary to say that all the circunstances and testimony, as taken at the inquest, exonerate Dr. Carr from blame, and manifest a degree of forebearance on his part to the young man commendable indeed..."
