General Notes: Husband -

Nathan HALBERT, ninth child of Isaac HALBERT and Elizabeth O'Daniel, was born about 1796 in Kentucky and died May 29, 1867 in Coryell County or Williamston County, Texas. He made his home with his parents until he moved away from Lewis County, apparently acting as head of the family in his father's old age and after his death.

Nathan served in the War of 1812 in 1813 in Capt. John Payne's Co., Kentucky. Light Dragoon, Col. Richard M. Johnson. He was one of the 150 volunteers from Gen. Harrison's forces that served as marines in Perry's Fleet at the Battle of Lake Erie, Sep 10, 1813. He was back with his company at the Battle of Thames, Oct 5, when Col. Johnson's Regiment. led an assault on the British and Indians and Col. Johnson was credited with the slaying of the Indian Chief, Tecumseh.

Back at home he aided his brothers, Henry and John, in making salt and running trading boats to New Orleans, engaged in farming with his brother-in-law, Richard BAGBY, was acting Sheriff of Lewis County, 1820-1822. According to family tradition he left Lewis County in 1828 to go to Texas. According to Texas records he did not arrive there until 1834. He may have stopped in Arkansas with his brother, Henry. On one of those trips to New Orleans, he may have met Mary Clementine BOULREICE.

"Nathan married before 1834 Mary Clementine BOULREICE, born about 1815-20 in La., and died Jan 23, 1900, Texas. He had corresponded with his family in Kentucky until just prior to the Civil War and may have died before communication could be reestablished." (William C. Halbert, Sr.)

Extract from Elizabeth Le Noir Jennet's Biographical Directory, p. 94: "Nathan HALBERT came to Texas in 1834, at which time, he was single, so stated in Headright Certificate No. 129, for one-third of a league of land, approx. 1500 acres, issued to him, Jun 8, 1838, by the Board of Land Commissioners for Jefferson Co., Texas. He was commissioned first Judge of the municipality of Jefferson in May 1836. In 1837 he was elected County Tax Collector. In 1841 he was appointed a member of the Traveling Board of Land Commissioners East of the Brazos River. In the Congress, 1842-43, he was a member of the House of Representatives from Jefferson Co., Texas. On Mar 13, 1848, Williamston Co. was created and in the 1850 census Judge HALBERT was listed as a farmer and stock raiser in the new county."

By 1850 Nathan had moved to Milam County, where he lived with his wife, Mary, and eight children, all but one of whom were born in Texas. The census listed HALBERT as a farmer with real property holdings of $8,000. He died before January 7, 1871. BIBLIOGRAPHY: Texas House of Representatives, Biographical Directory of the Texan Conventions and Congresses, 1832-1845 (Austin: Book Exchange, 1941). Robert A. Wooster

No further particulars of Judge HALBERT's life has been found. Papers in the General Land Office, dated Jan 7, 1871, show him to be deceased at that time. Nathan and his family resided in the Texas counties of Jefferson, Munich, Milan, Coryell, Bell, Williamston, and Goliad.

The above has been compiled from research by William C. HALBERT, Sr.'s research papers archived in the Library of Congress, additional information from William C. HALBERT, Jr., and Robert Louis Daniell.

From the HOLBERT HERALD Volume I, Numbers 1/2/3 &4 1981 September, page 19:
Nathan Halbert entered Texas in 1834. He is listed in "The Handbook of Texas: Vol I page 754 and in the "Biographical Directory of the Texas Conventions and congresses 1832-1845" pages 93-94. He lived, worked and owned land in Jefferson County Texas. He and his wife, Mary Clementine, are found in Milam County, Texas in the 1850 Census, with eight children. Nathan Holbert died 29 May 1867 in Coryell County,Texas. He and his wife were not living at the same location. She was in Goliad County,Texas with their minor children, Mary and Henry A. His daughter Elenor C. Mitchell in Goliad County,Texas; son James M. Holbert in Milam County, daughter Elizabeth D. Leatherman in Milam County; daughter Permelia E. Shaw in Falk County, and his grandson Andrew Jackson Holbert in Bell County Texas with his mother, the widow of George Washington, Mary Ann Cates Holbert. Andrew was a minor at this time. Nathan Halbert had owned extensive landin his life. But where in Kentucky had he been born? Was he married before Mary Clementine Boulrese, who was born in Louisiana? Was their first son, George Washington Halbert, the first son of Nathan? George died before his father. In 1959 there was a legal notice concerning part of his land in Bell County Texas. (*wish I could find that article!) During the lifetime of Andrew Jackson Halbert, he and his family lived in and around Bell County Texas including: Prairie Dell, Salado, Chalky Ridge, Temple, Rogers, Holland, and Sparta. In Coryell County they lived in Elijah, Copperas Cove, and Killeen. In Milam County near Devilla, in Runnels County between Winters & Wilmouth. In Tarrant County, in Smithfield,Grapevine and Fort Worth."
Then on page 20 is a pic of Andrew Jackson Halbert Sr & wife Mary Minerva Woods and their large family of 12 children announcing a pending family reunion (in 1981) which would celebrate with the 3 "still living" children, Fannye Halbert Wright, Priscilla Halbert Martin, and Gladys Halbert Beeler. *I think everyone will forgive my spelling of Holbert/Halbert with interchanging "a"'s and "o"s, but inside of these families this was done quite often... I would never intentionally change the way anyone spells their name, so please forgive my errors. Nadine (Posted at: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/HOLBERT/1999-06/0930417921)

On September 03, 2003, Sarah KRON advised that she is descended from Nathan HALBERT. The information she presented has been added to Nathan's descendants.

Who is this Nathan HALBERT? The age is correct for our Nathan above, but he does not live with known family: 1860 U.S. Census, Kentucky, Marion County, Lebanon P O, 2 July 1860; Series: M653 Roll: 385 Page: 586 [Partial]: 329 307 George CRAVENS 30 KY...Nathaniel HALBERT 65 M W Farm hand KY.

General Notes: Wife -

Mary Clementine BULREICE (also BOULREICE, Boulrece, and other possible spellings) married Nathan HALBERT. Mary was born between 1815 and 1820 in Louisiana, evidenced by her ages in the 1850 and 1880 censuses. Assuming that all the children in the 1850 census are hers, she and Nathan married about 1833.

The ancestry of Mary Clementine is uncertain. This post and other researchers comments that she may have been a "gypsy" or Creole could relate to Mary's being part of the Melungeon people of the early 1800s in Louisiana. More on Melungeons at http://www.whatisamelungeon.webs.com/.
"...the pic of Andrew Jackson HOLBERT also shows a dark skin fellow with dark hair. In answer to your question if I thought a dark skinned wife would have effected political aspirations in Texas in the mid 1800's, the answer would be "no". The "Black Dutch" storey has also be said about my own Great Grandfather, Shade HOLBERT of Tennessee, family. Kentucky was covered up in "Black Dutch", which was a group of folks from the very early 1800's which had a "strange" accent.... it has been theorized that they were the European gypsies that migrated to the U.S. Other courses of studies done in Tennessee were believing that the Black Dutch were mixed white & African Americans. Truth be known, almost anyone not translucent white was often referred to as "Black Dutch".... it gave some people in the Carolina's a great and effective way to get some free land and homes away from other people by putting them on the Trail of Tears to Oklahoma...." Mary died 23 January 1900 when caught in a tornado near Sherman, Texas.

General Notes: Husband -

TAYLOR, John - John TAYLOR arrived in Richland County from Virginia in 1749 and settled on Back Swamp on the Bluff Road. John's children were:
1. (Captain) John TAYLOR who married Sarah HIRONS. He died during the American Revolution.
2. Mary TAYLOR married (1) William HAY and after his death then married (2) Thomas HEATH
3. Martha TAYLOR married (1) Nathan Center and after his death then married (2) Captain George WADE
4. (Colonel) Thomas TAYLOR: born September 10, 1743, died November 16, 1833. He married Ann WYCHE (born June 4, 1749, died July 27, 1834) on November 16, 1767.
5. James TAYLOR who died in August 1806, married (1) Mary HIRONS (died April 21, 1772) on April 5, 1768. After Mary's death, James married (2) Sarah DANIEL on December 2, 1772.
John TAYLOR came to South Carolina about the same time (1749 to 1750) as James DANIELL, and lived near James DANIELL's house, at or near what is now Columbia, South Carolina.
John Taylor died in the latter part of 1766 leaving a will (recorded in Charleston, SC). In it he mentions his sons Thomas, John, James, and William, and daughters Martha and Elizabeth. It also mentions a wife Mary, (no maiden name given), and by the terms of the will it appears that she was his second wife and not the mother of his children. It also appears from the deed made by John Taylor transferring his lands in Virginia, that in 1754 he had a wife named Lucy. ("Col Thomas Taylor", compiled by B. F. Taylor in the SC Historical Magazine Vol 27 Oct 1926 pp 204-211).

In 1756, John and his wife Lucy TAYLOR sold four parcels of land to a Jacob MORGAN of Chesterfield County, Virginia. These were properties John obtained from Jacob MITCHELL in 1745, two, one 83 acres and one 100 acres from John MITCHELL, and a 450 acre patent from 1736. [Southside Virginia, Pritchett, p. 1910]

John's wife was Lucy in 1756, but his Will of 1766 names his wife as Mary, obviously married twice.

Abstracts of the will of John TAYLOR: "Will Book 1761-1771, page 19. John TAYLOR: July 29, 1766-May 11, 1767. Wit.: Joel THREEWITS, Jemima THREEWITS, Samuel STROTHER. Ex.: Thomas TAYLOR. Wife: Mary. Sons: John, Thomas, James, William. Daughters Martha, Elizabeth." (History of Richland County, Green, p. 209)

Dillard is buried in Bethel Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Brooks County, Georgia. A picture of his grave marker on Find A Grave Memorial# 35304117, created by Robert Strickland on Mar 29, 2009. reads:

DILLARD BURGESS
1801
DIED BETWEEN 1860-1870

The memorial provides that Dillard died in 1865 in Brooks County, Georgia. The dates may be in question. He is age 42 in the 1850 census and age 50 in 1860 census.

General Notes: Wife -

Aness, wife of James Dillard BURGESS, as on her headstone, is Agnes Annes/Aniss CANNON according to many researchers. Curiously, on the 1927 death certificate of her son, James Madison BURGESS,she is named as "Annie BROOKS." She was first listed as BURGESS, lined out, and BOONE entered underneath. The informant was L. L. BURGESS of Berlin, Georgia, who was also the untertaker. This is the only record or research this compiler has seen that lists BOONE as Aness BURGESS' maiden name. Interestingly, Aness' son, William Wesley BURGESS, married Susan C. BOONE on 25 July 1857 in Thomas County, Georgia. Their maiden surnames may have been confused by the informant in 1927. Other research consistently lists her as the daughter of Archibald CANNON, Jr., and Mary CRIBBS. Question: Did Agnes Annes "Annie" Burgess possibly remarry before her death in 1883.

NOTE: Posted research has variences in dates and places of events in Aness' life. Other than the BOONE maiden name anomaly, they generally agree that Agnes Aness CANNON married James Dillard BURGESS about 1831 in Dooly County, Georgia.

The family of Dillard and Aness are enumerated in the 1840 census. Names inserted in age ranges are not in the census itself but matched as determined from other sources.
1840 U.S. Census, Georgia, Dooly County, 2-District; Series: M704 Roll: 40:
Page 104 Line 28 BURGESS Dillard 1M 5-10 (William Wesley), 1M 30-40 (Dillard); 2F 0-5 (Mary Ann & Samantha), 1F 5-10 (Unknown), 1 F 20-30 (Agnes Aness).
The housholds of Josiah, age 70-80, Robert, age 20-30, William, age 20-30, and S. T., age 30-40, BURGESS are in close proximity.

In 1850, Aness, 37, and Dillard, 42, are in Sumter County, Georgia with six children: William, 17; Mary, 16; Samantha, 11; John, 9; James, 6; and Stephen, 3.
Next door are John W. and Mary CANNON, age 24 and 21, and their two daughters. Two homes away is Osborne BAKER, 20, in the home of James BAKER, 27. Osborne would marry Aness and Dillard's daughter Mary on 10 November 1850.

By 1860, Aness, age 45, and family are in Thomasville, Thomas County, Georgia. Two more children, Robert, 10, and Jane, 5, are in the family.

Between the 1860 census and the date of death on her headstone, no record of Anness BURGESS has been found by this compiler.

Aness BURGESS is buried in Bethel Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Pavo, Brooks County, Georgia. A picture of her headstone is on Find A Grave Memorial# 35304249, created by Robert Strickland on Mar 29, 2009:

In the 1850 census of Dooly County, Georgia, "Josiah BURGES" is age 84, born in Virginia, indicating his birth in 1765 or 1766. This is consistent with his age ranges in the 1830 and 1840 censuses. A picture of the headstone in Sand Hill Methodist Cemetery, Telfair County, Georgia, posted on Find A Grave Memorial# 46278605 showsonly this:

"Josiah BURGESS, also called Samuel Josiah BURGESS on his tombstone, was born about 1766 in Virginia. His wife's name is unknown. Silas BURKE married Hannah COFFER.

1850 U.S. Census, Virginia, Fairfax County, No Twp; Series: M432 Roll: 942 Page: 162: 809 809 Silas BURKE 53 M Farmer 12000 VA; Hannah BURKE 48 F VA; Leticia BURKE 40 F VA; John T. BURKE 22 M Engineer VA; Ann V. BURKE 16 F VA.

Hannah is head of household in 1860, Fairfax County, Virginia. Silas died in 1854.

"...Silas BURKE, who had been born in Prince William County in 1796, moved to Virginia on land farmed by his father near the Ravensworth plantation of the Fitzhughs. In time he went to work on the plantation, became its manager, married into the well-to-do COFFER family, and began to acquire real and personal property in the area. He built the Silas Burke House around 1824 on Burke Lake Road near the entrance to Burke Centre, about the time he married Hannah COFFER. He lived in this house until his death in 1854. Already a successful farmer, Silas BURKE became chief justice of the Fairfax County court and owner of a store, a mill, a blacksmith shop, and a brickyard. Always civic-minded he became county sheriff, a lieutenant colonel in the county militia, a school commissioner, trustee, guardian and appraiser, and president of the Fairfax Agricultural Society. At the time of his death he was the highest ranked public official in the county, and a lieutenant colonel in the Virginia state militia.
Realizing the importance of the railroad, he gave land to the Orange and Alexandria Railroad (chartered in 1848) for a right-of-way, and was successful in persuading his friends and neighbors to do likewise. He served as a state director of the Fairfax Turnpike Company and of the Orange and Alexandria Railroad, which was built through Fairfax County in the late 1840s and through the 1850s. The surname "Burke" first appeared on an 1849 Orange and Alexandria Railroad map. Silas BURKE was survived by his wife Hannah, his son John Thomas, his daughter Anne Virginia BURKE, and two brothers, Newman and George BURKE. Hannah lived until 1895. John Thomas BURKE, his only son, was a captain in the Confederate army, and died a hero at the battle of Sharpsburg (Antietam) on September 17, 1862." (http://www.shha-burke.org/Burke%20History.htm)

Silas and Hannah's house is a Virginia Historical Site:
VA-E95 Silas Burke House
Here lived Lt. Col Silas Burke (b. 1796-d. 1854) and his wife, Hannah Coffer. Burke, for whom Burke's Station on the Orange & Alexandria Railroad was named, served as a director of the railroad and the Fairfax Turnpike Company. An innkeeper and farmer, Burke was elected president of the Fairfax Agricultural Society in 1850. He held many county offices with distinction, including road surveyor, commissioner of public buildings and schools, county court justice, presiding justice, and sheriff.
