General Notes: Husband - Dr. Oswell E. BURT

"Dr. Oswell E. Burt, who was born in 1800, studied medicine in Pendleton. He married Nancy Raiford there about 1823 and moved to Alabama, where he and Nancy had several children. While there, he founded the town of Alexandria. The Baptist Church he attended is still there today. Nancy died in the 1840's, and Dr. Burt married Martha Griffin. In 1850, Dr. Burt, his new wife, her father, David Griffin, several of his children, and others left Alabama for Texas. Some of Dr. Burt's descendants still live in Alabama. It has been our pleasure to meet and visit with one of his descendants, Mrs. Harriet Blover Watson of Anniston, Alabama.
Upon his arrival in Texas, Dr. Oswell Burt settled in the community of Millville, which was one of the largest towns in Rusk County at that time. He farmed and practiced medicine there until his death in 1879. He and Martha reared eight children after they came to Texas. Martha Burt lived until 1898 and, at one time, served as Postmistress at Motley. Her father, David Griffin, also served as Postmaster at Millville, as did two of Dr. Burt's sons, T. H. and Dr. Matt Burt.
The children of Dr. Oswell E. Burt and Martha Burt were: Mrs. Gus (Burt) Baughman, Mrs. Kate (Burt) Spharler, Dr. Matthews Armstead A. Burt, Mrs. Ella (Burt) Young, and Mrs. Julia Ann (Burt) Standard. Two of their children died in infancy. Many descendants of Dr. Burt and Martha Burt, through these children, reside in Rusk County today." (Submitted by Jimmy G. Burt, son of O. William C. Smith died before June 1880 when Martha is a widowed head of household in Hancock County, Georgia. His obituary was published on ______ in the ________ :
Suicide
We regret to chronicle the death of Mr. William C. Smith, better known as Buck Smith, residing near Island Creek, which occurred by his own hand on last Friday morning about 9 o'clock. Mr. S. was an old and respectable citizen of Hancock County. He was about 60 years of age and leaves a large family. On Friday morning he went to the house of Mr. Reynolds, a tenant of his, where he obtained a gun and going a short distance from the house sat down, placed the muzzle of the gun to his head and pulled the trigger, killing himself instantly. Deporession of spiritsproduced by financial embarrassment is supposed to be the cause of the desperate act." General Notes: Husband - Samuel Jordan HARRISON

"Samuel Jordan Harrison was the eldest son of William Harrison(1740-1819) of Queen's Creek, York county, VA. In 1790 he came to Bedford county as a clerk in the business of his uncle Christopher Anthony, a noted Quaker. The mother of Samuel Jordan Harrison was Margaret Jordan (1747-1831) the daughter and granddaughter of Quaker preachers. To judge from her letters, she was somewhat of a preacher herself. With the new ideas and new spiit which came in with the success of the American Revolution, many mother hens were disturbed to find that they had hatched out a brood of ducklings. Samuel and William Harrison were brought up in the strictest practices of the Quakers, but when they branched out for themselves at Lynchburg, they fell by the wayside. Samuel was full of "bonhomie" and gaiety of spirit. He joined the masonic lodge and was promptly expelled from the Society of Friends. Next his brother William was expelled by them for 'swearing and betting on the races.'"

In 1874, when she was 20 years old, she, with her husband and son moved to Illinois where they lived for one year and then moved to Missouri where the family lived until 1910 when they moved to Cantril, Iowa. After moving to Missouri she united with the Baptist church at Prairie View and remained a member of this church as long as she lived. She was baptized by the Rev. W. Kittle. A Find A Grave volunteer has reported a problem with your photo request for Rachael Luman.
The general problem they reported is: "I searched the entire cemetery and could not find the grave." They also reported, specifically: "my family and I went through the cemetery twice with no luck. The cemetery is very old with many unreadable cement and wood headstones. It has not been well kept. Sorry I could not fulfill your request. Tobi"

"As an anecdote, I learned from my mother (Eda Claire Buschatzky Smith) that not only did my grandmother, born as Marie Louise May, not have a birth certificate (the first records of her shows up in the 1900 census at age 2 years), but she was not originally named Marie LOUISE May but was originally Marie ANTOINETTE May... According to my mother, her mother's middle name was changed from "Antoinette" to "Louise" when Marie May was 12 years old apparently because her mother took her to a fortune teller and was told that if she went through life with the name "Marie Antoinette" she would end up either a suicide or mass murderer." [Colin K. Smith, email, 26 February 2014]

"Marie Walker, died in 1979 in Birmingham, AL after having spent about 18 months in a nursing home (she went in around Christmas 1977.)" [Colin K. Smith, email, 22 April 2014]

Marie Walker, born 22 November 1897, died in October 1979 at age 82. Her last residence was in Jefferson County, Alabama 35223. Social Security Number 078-24-6330 was issued in New York. Vincent Hardy Bell and "Marie Mary Bell Bushatzky Walker" [*] are named as parents in the September 9, 2010 obituary of Marie Bell Davis.
[* The reference to "Marie MARY Bell Bushatzky Walker" in the obit for Marie Bell Davis is wrong. My grandmother's full name was "MARIE Louise MAY (maiden name) Bell (1st husband) Buschatzky (2nd husband) Walker (3rd husband)." [Colin K. Smith, email, 25 February 2014]

General Notes: Husband - Charles G. DAVIS

"Charles G. DAVIS was born on 11 May 1875 in Milledgeville, Ga. to HICKS and Mary EADY. Both parents were born in Ga. Charles was the younger, and only, brother of William James DAVIS (Jr.). His father may have died within a few years of his birth as he did not show up as head of household on the 1880 census. At the time, his mother Mary EADY was living with her aging father John EADY on his farm in northern Wilkinson County Ga. with the two boys. I have not been able to determine anything more about his parents. By 1900, brother William James DAVIS had a farm and family and was living in Wilkinson co.
Since the 1890 census was destroyed by fire, I have little information on what happened to Charles between 1880 and about 1902 when he appeared in Texas. I did not find him on the 1900 census in Texas but a single man would have been somewhat difficult to locate on the census. By 1902 Charles was about 17, working for the Santa Fe Railroad and had met and proposed to his future wife Emma Evelyn BUTLER of Tyler. They married about a year later and subsequently moved to Cliburn, Texas and about 1915 moved again to El Paso. Charles seemed to work for railroads for most of his life. His son Oscar D. DAVIS (now deceased) told me that his father worked as a boilermaker for the railroad. I could only guess that he was engaged in some big heavy metal fabrication shop making locomotives for the railroad. When his brother William died in May 1937, Charles drove his car to Macon via Baton Rouge, La. I know this as I discovered a detailed receipt for automobile repairs Charles had done in Baton Rouge just before the funeral. The Ford dealership in Baton Rouge happened to be owned by my grandfather William Milton DAVIS. Charles continued on to Macon and is listed as attending the funeral in his brother's obituary.
Charles' daughter Evelyn reported on Jan 11, 1991 that he had been a boilermaker for a Darby Shar Co. in 1937. Later, he worked as a custodian for the Emanuel Baptist Church in El Paso until his death in 1947. I wrote the church, but they could not locate any old records to substantiate his working there or being a member of the church. I could not find him listed as a recipient of social security. Charles G. DAVIS died at Southwest General Hospital on Cotton St. in El Paso. His son Oscar told me "My father rolled his own cigarettes. Guess that is what got him." I have a full length photograph of Charles G. DAVIS in his later years standing outside in a dark suit and wearing a hat. He was thin and had a "hawkish" nose and not very tall. He looks remarkably like his brother William James and his son William Milton DAVIS. I assume Charles G. DAVIS is buried in or near El Paso as a number of his family are still in the area." (Jack S. Davis)
"Charles G. DAVIS b. 11 May 1975 in Milledgeville. By 1900, Charles G. DAVIS had moved to Texas and married soon after. He ended up in El Paso and worked as a 'motorman' on a trolley line, had children and died in El Paso, Texas on 25 July 1947 survived by a wife and children." (Jack Davis, JStuartD1@aol.com)

CONFLICT! There are two camps on Rootsweb as to who was the wife of Capt. James BUTLER, killed at Cloud's Creek, 1781, Mary Elizabeth FOOTE by some, Mary SIMPSON by others. Has this been resolved?

SC Historic Highway Marker Guide , p.147
32-4 Battle of Cloud's Creek

On November 17, 1781, in a house near Cloud's Creek one mile east Captain Sterling Turner's Patriot militia were surrounded and massacred by Tory militia under Major William Cunningham. Among the more than twenty dead were Captain James Butler and his son, James, who were buried with the others at the site, and whose graves have been marked there.

"The Butler muster roll has certainly confused me and I am certain it has confused others. The original document is titled, Captain Butlers company of volunteers according to pay from Sept. 1, 1781 to March 1, 1782, including 182 days. How could it be for Captain William Butlers company when he received his captains commission on 2 Feb 1782 and he is listed as a lieutenant on this document? He is also listed as a lieutenant on a muster roll for Captain Michael Watson which has overlapping dates with the Captain Butler muster roll.
I suggested, incorrectly it turns out, that the Captain Butler was Capt. James Butler. I have since found more about this peculiar muster roll and how it came to have been saved. The original document was submitted by Behethland Moore Butler when she applied for a Revolutionary War widows pension in 1841. In her affidavit that accompanied her application, Behethland Butler states, that she is the widow of William Butler, who was an officer in the revolutionary War, first serving as a Lieutenant under Capt. M. Watson and afterwards appointed Captain of a troop of mounted Militia, attached to the regiment, commanded by Col. Hammond received his commission [2 Feb 1782] from John Matthews then acting Governor of South Carolina, which said Commission is appended to this declaration. . . . perhaps in the early part of seventeen hundred & eighty two (1782) she saw her husband frequently, while as Captain, he was in command of a Mounted corps, raised under the orders of Genl. Pickens. Whilst in this service, she saw her husband going to & returning from Genl. Pickens, who lived at that time near Long Cain. Genl Pickens letters to her husband and the muster roll, will show the nature & time of service, the originals will accompany this declaration, to which the department is specifically referred." General Notes: Husband - Richard Lemuel BUTT, Jr.

"RICHARD LEMUEL BUTT, probably the best-known railroad man in Alabama, if not in the entire South, was born at Midway, Barbour county, Ala., November 18, 1856. His father, Dr. Richard Lemuel Butt, was a native of Georgia, and lived at various times in Columbus, Ga., Talbotton, Ga., Midway, Ala., and Memphis, Tenn. He was a skilled physician, and served for four years during the Civil war as surgeon in the Confederate army, being promoted major during this time. He was the son of Moses E. and Priscilla (Banks) Butt, who lived in Georgia. He was married first July 29, 1846, to Eliza C. Leonard, who was the daughter of Van and Mary B. (Jones) Leonard, of Wynnton, Ga., and who died in Memphis, Tenn., November 15, 1861. In the spring of 1864 he married Mrs. Martha Jackson Gamewill, who was a full cousin of Gen. Stonewall Jackson, and after her death, on August 12, 1870, he married November 22, 1876, Mrs. Mary E. Henderson, who now lives in Montgomery, Ala. Dr. Butt died December 18, 1901. "Captain Dick" Butt, as he is popularly and affectionately known, lived during the war after his mother's death with an aunt, Mrs. Sallie King, in Columbus, Ga., and then with his stepmother. His education was limited, his father's reverses in fortune and failure of health making it impossible to send him to school after he was fifteen years old. He was thrown on his own resources when very young, and worked first at fifty cents a day on the dry dock. When twelve years old he hired out to William K. Polk, of Bolivar county, Miss., as a cow-boy. This employment he gave up in 1871, and, going to Memphis, he secured employment as a train boy. In 1873 he was employed as utility boy in a drug store in Memphis during the yellow fever epidemic, and then, fearing consumption, he worked a year on his father's farm. Having learned telegraphy he was employed as operator at Montgomery, Ala., by the Montgomery & Eastern railroad. His health failing, he gave up office work and became baggage-master and subsequently passenger conductor on the same road. He was subsequently employed as general yardmaster, brakeman and railroad conductor, working for the Baltimore & Ohio railroad from 1880 to 1889, for the Alabama Midland from 1889 to 1895, being master of trains for the latter company from 1895 to 1901. On February 16, 1890, he suffered an accident in which the train passed over both feet, but medical skill and training saved them from amputation, and. although crippled, he was able to continue his work. Mr. Butt is a Democrat and a Baptist. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, Knights of Pythias, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Red Men and the Order of Railroad Conductors. During his long term of service "Capt. Dick" was never discharged, and never had a passenger injured. His record as a faithful and competent trainman is a remarkable one. He was married May 22, 1881, at Midway, Ala., to Mary Elizabeth, daughter of Warren Jordan Jordan and Elizabeth T. (Myrick) Jordan. The Jordan family came originally from Georgia. Warren Jordan Jordan was killed during the Civil war. Mr. and Mrs. Butt are the parents of three children. Of these, Richard Lemuel, the third of the name, was born in Midway, Ala., April 22, 1882, and is now rate clerk in the general freight offices of the Atlantic Coast line at Wilmington, N. C.; Arthur Jordan, born March 28, 1885, at Midway, Ala., is now midshipman at the United States Naval academy at Annapolis, and Howard Eldridge, born April 9, 1888, at Midway, Ala., is a student at the Marion Military institute, Marion, Ala. Their only daughter, Mamie Lou, born September 28, 1883, at Midway, Ala., died January 30, 1886, at Sandusky, Ohio. Mr. Butt is a resident of Montgomery, having returned there in 1889.
