General Notes: Husband - Edmund MARSH

Edmund MARSH was born about 1740.
In 1770, he had a run-in with the King's court system. In the records of this "brush with the law", he was called a laborer, probably because he had left his property in Bertie County as a result of this assault and was temporarily landless. He then posted 40 pounds bail with Grymes. In last paragraph he is a Planter as that was his former position in Bertie before he "got out of Dodge." He must have gone to Guilford/Randolph Co. and moved onto the land in the grant. No idea how the case was resolved, but probably no jail, more likely fines and damages. Maybe had to sell his Bertie Co. land to pay them. Or, he could have beat the charges. At any rate, it puts Edmund at a time and place for us, 1770, before the birth of his children: Darius (1772-1841), Catherine, and Bryan(t). He seems to have been the only Edmund in the area. The same area as William Bryan(t) m. Catherine Bryan(t), remarried Ellis, and their daughter Catherine m. Edmund Marsh. (Linda Marsh)

Edmund MARSH received this land grant dated 24 Jul 1786, about 9 years after his death. From all appearances, this was the date that the annual payments were completed by his estate and the estate received title to the land.

The Last Will & Testament of Edmund MARSH of Guilford County, North Carolina was probated in Randolph County, North Carolina. (Note: By 1780 the southern portion of Guilford County became Randolph County. Edmund lived in Guilford County when he wrote his will in 1778. It is unlikely that he had moved, but his land was then in part of the newly created Randolph County when his will was probated. RLD.) A transcript of the will is found on page 161 of the book "John Marsh Of Craven and Kershaw Counties South Carolina and His Descendants and Research Notes On Marsh." by U. Bowdoin Marsh as follows:
In the Name of God. Amen. I Edmond MARSH of Guilford County and Province of North Carolina being weak in body and knowing that it is appointed man once to die and after that the Judgement I Commit my Soul into the hands of God who gave it me and my body to the dust to be bured in a Christian like maner at the discresin of my Executors And as to my temporal Estat I leave bequeath and dispose as follows that is to say first of all I give and bequeath to my son Darius MARSH the plantation whereon I now live and as the same is not seeded my desire is that what ever can best be spared out of my Estat shall be sold at publick sale to rase money to seed the same at the discesion of my Executors and that it is my will and pleasure that my son Darius MARSH shall have possession of the sd plantation when he arrives to the age of Eighteen years being six years of age the 29 of October next and my will and pleasure is that the rest of Estat shall be equaly divided between my well beloved wife (obliterated) and my three children (five lines are obliterated or only partially readable at this point)-- for the benefit of my wife and three children and (illegible) that my children shal have sufficient schooling (illegible) the same to be paid out of my Estat. And any money arising from the saile of any part of my Estat shall be thought nessary to be sold over and above will be sufficient seed my land and school my children to be put out on intress for the use of my wife and children to be equally divid between them at the time of dividing the rest of my Estat. And I heareby declare this to be my last will and Testament given under my hand seal this Eighteenth Day of May One Thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy Eight. I constute and appoint my wife Katherine MARSH, Robert HARGROVE and Jacob SHEPPERD Executors of my Estate. (s) Edmund MARSH (s) Robert HARGROVE (s) Amory (X) SPINKS, Jr. (Approved in open court - September Court 1779 on oath of Amery SPINKS one of the subscribing witnesses).
Note: Grimes - "North Carolina Wills" shows the other two children to be Katherine and Bryant (or Bryan?) (son). These were probably shown in the blank spaces now not readable. Grimes picks up the maker of the will as Edward MARSH; however it is distinctly spelled Edmund and Edmond MARSH in the long hand of the original document. (See early records of Clark Co., Ala.re: Darius, Bryan, and Edmund MARSH.) (This page received from Linda Marsh of California. RLD)
"EARLY RECORDS OF NORTH CAROLINA", Vol. VII: Wills 1756 - 1794', abstracted by Dr. Stephen E. Bradley, Jr., on page 55, records: "252. General Notes: Wife - Catherine BRYANT

"1775 Wed 19 July Milly WIGGINS 18 years old, daughter of Sarah WIGGINS, bound to Edmund MARSH and his wife Catherine. NOTE: Milly WIGGINS a free wench, as we see from the entry below Catherine ELLIS owned Milly and then passed her on to Edmund MARSH her son in law. There were several children by Sarah WIGGENS that were mentioned in Bertie court records being bound out to familiar names. Since Catherine ELLIS mentioned Judah in her will...from the 1763 entry below it would seem that JUDE is sister to Millie WIGGINS...not her mother. from Bertie Court.... 1763 On motion of Thomas JONES att at law in behalf of Aaron ELLIS an order of court to have a negro boy Matthew 14, Jacob 7, girl JUDE 10, Mille 5, Arthur 2, until age 21, to learn the following, Matthew - cooper, Jacob - cordwainer, Arthur - cooper. daughter Catherine BRYAN married Edmund MARSH, they moved from Bertie to Randolph Co NC. An abstract of his will can be found in Grimes for Guilford Co. NC, however, I have a written copy from Randolph Co NC. 1779...cathy" (http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncbertie/aarsrch.htm)

General Notes: Wife - Elgie DANIEL

Elzie DANIEL, daughter of John William Henry DANIEL and Savannah BRAND, is age 6 in the 1910 census of Heard County, Georgia. She married Andrew BUCHANAN on 20 January 1918 in Heard County, Georgia.

Other than the 1910 census, Elzie's name appears to be spelled with a "g" and is oddly written or illegible. She is named twice in the 1920 census of Heard County, Georgia, by maiden name in her parents' home and as wife of Andrew Buchanan in a separate household.

In the 1920 census of Heard County, Georgia, Elzie is llisted twice, once as "Elger", age 16, in the home of her parents, John Henry DANIEL and Savannah BRAND, page date 12 January, and also as "Elgire", 17, wife of Andrew BUCHANAN, page date 16 January.

Death certificate information:
Elg__ BUCHANAN of Franklin, Georgia was born [illegible] - 8 -1903 in Heard County, died Nov 30, 1926 [the 6 written over a 7] at age [years not legible] 9 months 2 days in Heard County [Georgia] and buried in Bevis Cemetery. She was the wife of Andrew BUCHANAN and the daughter of Henry DANIEL and Sav[annah] Daniel BRAND. Henry was born in Alabama. Savannah was born in Heard County. Informant was Sav[ann]ah, er X mk, DANIEL of [Fra]nklin, Georgia. Certificate Number 32237. ["Georgia, Deaths, 1914-1927," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JDJ7-7G3 : accessed 13 Oct 2012), Elg* Buchanan, 30 Nov 1926.]
[NOTES: No cause of death or attending phsician named on the certificate. "Elg__" is all that is visible of the given name. Second year of age is blotted out. Mother's name is "Sav[illegible] Daniel Brand". RLD]

Eglie's grave in Bevis cemetery appears to be unmarked. Tom Smith. Find A Grave volunteer, searched the entire cemetery and could not find the grave. He reported, specifically: "There are no Buchanons in this cemetery. There are some graves marked with just field stones."

There appear to have been no surviving children of Elzie and Andrew's marriage. The 1930 census lists Andrew BUCHANAN, age 33, and wife, Inez, age 17, no children, and a grandmother, Matildie GORE, age 66. General Notes: Husband - Georg Albrecht BUCHHEISTER

"GEORGE A. BUCHHEISTER was born in Bremen, Germany, on September 15th 1872. His Father, Gustav Adolph Buchheister, was a tobacco broker in Bremen, well known and highly esteemed by the tobacco interests of his home town, Bremen.
After leaving school in Bremen, young George Buchheister entered the tobacco import firm of Papendieck & Co. of Bremen, where he served his apprenticeship of three years, during which he became thoroughly familiar with various kinds and grades of tobacco handled in his home town.
Having ended his apprenticeship, he left for Hanover and there served his military year with the 74th Regiment of Infantry and being a good soldier was promoted to the rank of petty officer before the end of the military term.
Having an uncle in America, who held a good position with the Standard Oil Co. in New York City, he was easily persuaded to cross the Atlantic and seek his fortune in the United States. Hence in 1892, in the spring, when in his twentieth year, he embarked for America on one of the steamers of the North German Lloyd and landed in Hoboken, N. J., where he made his home, having obtained a position as bookkeeper and office man with a German firm in New York City.
However, having been well trained in the tobacco trade, he was anxious to get back into this line of business and when he heard from his father in Bremen that Mr. Henry Lauts, a tobacco merchant of Baltimore, Md., was looking for a buyer to assist him in his purchases for American and European firms, he promptly applied for the position and was subsequently accepted.
In the autumn of 1892 we find young Buchheister employed with the tobacco firm of Henry Lauts & Co. with which he remained for over 41 years until his death on February 3rd, 1934.
In 1897 he was married to Miss Mary Koch, the daughter or Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Koch of Baltimore, by whom he had six children, four boys and two girls, all surviving him. The family lived in Baltimore for a number of years, but during the World War bought a tobacco farm in Prince George's County, Maryland, where they spent many happy years, surrounded by friendly neighbors.
Outside of business, Mr. Buchheister was always very closely identified with all affairs of any importance, carried on from time to time by the various German-American Societies of our city. For many years he was a director of the Germania Club, and in his earlier years he was active as the secretary of this organization. Furthermore, he was Director of the German Orphan Asylum and the "Greisnheim" and took great interest in these and other beneficial societies. A man of jovial disposition and noble impulses, he was ever ready to assist any worthy cause, which presented itself and was, therefore, looked up to by his fellow men and particularly by the German element of Baltimore, with which he came in contact so frequently.
His untimely end, which resulted from falling down a steep stairway, came as a shock to a host of friends. His mortal remains are interred in Prince George's county, near his farm, which had become so dear to him " Carl W. Prior" (Received from Nancy Corazzi, great-great-granddaughter of George Albrecht Buchheister, a section titled, In Memoriam, page 54-55, from The Report of the Society for the History of the Germans in Maryland, Randall P. Donaldson, Ph.D., Editor, % Modern Languages & Literatures, Loyola College in Maryland, 4501 N. Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21210-2699.)

Ellis Island records show George Albrecht BUCHHEISTER arrived in United States 21 Mar 1906 from Cherbourg, France on the Kaiser Wilhelm II, Passenger Manifest No. 0024.

Next door neighbors are Rebecca's brothers Josephus and Drucilla EILAND and Stephen and Elizabeth EILAND.

Richard and Rebecca moved to Montgomery County, Alabama before 1870 when they are neighbors of Rebecca's brothers Isaiah and Thomas J. EILAND.
Some of the children's names and birth years do not correspond well to children listed in 1860, not all Richard and Rebecca's? Martha L., age 3, may be a granddaughter, not a daughter.
