General Notes: Husband - David MAYO

The information below generously provided by David Leon Wilson II:

David MAYO was a Mason. He earned his living as a cabinet maker and , for a while was town crier of Washington, Georgia. Why did he come to Wilkes County?

David fought in the War of 1812 as a private. He enlisted at Burlington, Vermont and initially served under Lt. Justus FOOTE in Col. Sumner's regiment of the Vermont Militia from April 12 to April 21 in 1814 . He then served in Captain Henry Mayo's Company from September 8 to September 25, 1814. On September 11, 1814 , he crossed Lake Champlain and arrived at Plattsburg , N. Y. where he received a wound in the left leg by a ball passing through it just below the knee, injuring the joint.

On May 22,1866 , David applied for the bounty land which was due on of account of his service in the war. He was allowed 160 acres of bounty land on warrant # 1111378 under the act of 1855.

Marriage Notes for David Mayo and Maria BRUCKNER:
Wilkes County Records show the marriage to be in Wilkes but family tradition is that they were married in Charleston.

Children of David Mayo and Maria BRUCKNER are:
2. Lucy Catherine2 Mayo (Source: Bible of David Mayo, in possession of Carol Poe in Macon, Ga..), born June 24, 1827 in Washington, Wilkes County, Georgia (Source: Bible of David Mayo, in possession of Carol Poe in Macon, Ga..); died December 14, 1874 in Nashville, Tennessee. She married William Whitacre Wilson August 23, 1854 (Source: Bible of David Mayo, in possession of Carol Poe in Macon, Ga..); born Abt. 1830 in Maryland (Source: Census of 1870.); died 1902 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Notes for Lucy Catherine Mayo:
The fist of 4 girls, Lucy was born in Wilkes County Georgia. She married William W. Wilson in 1854 and they moved to Atlanta by 1860. After 1870, they move to Nashville and shortly after, Lucy dies of pneumonia.

Lucy's obituary appeared in the Nashville Banner, unknown date, is on file and is follows: Died in the city of Nashville, Tennessee on the fourteenth day of December, Anno Domini, of pneumonia, Mrs. Lucy Wilson, daughter of David and Julia Mayo, and wife of William Wilson. Mrs. Wilson was born in the State of Georgia and had but recently moved from Atlanta to Nashville. She was forty-seven years of age at the time of her death. The writer knew her long and well, and a more amiable, sweet-tempered person it would be difficult to find. Her lot was not one of sunshine always, but she nobly did her duty, and that was enough to say. To her husband, whether in misfortune of prosperity, she proved a patient, devoted wife; to her children, a loving and tender mother; to her relatives and friends, a kind, cheerful, and always pleasant companion and neighbor. May her slumbers be peaceful forevermore. It is a beautiful truth that, even as regards this life, the good and the true, the pure and the lovely, do not, cannot altogether die. When this dreaming is ended, and the life passes on into the dreamless sleep, something more than a name abides with us, and will abide for aye. For, when to us, also,
"The summons come to join
The innumerable caravan that moves
To that mysterious realm, where each shall take
His chamber in the silent halls of death"
and our names, and the names of those we once so tenderly loved shall be obliterated from the "sands of time" by the cold shadowy waves of oblivion, something of that life's beauty and goodness and loveliness shall forever be _____ of those who come after - even as a kind of indestructible fragrance, whose wavelets of sweetening are unceasingly widening, long after the flower from which it exhaled has dropped from it's parent stem - even as the fragrance blends with that of the budding flowerlet. To us, who so well knew, and so well loved her upon whose tomb we wish to place this simple offering of friendship; to us it has seemed so eminently proper that the above so beautiful truth , so beautifully illustrated by her, should be woven into the simple in memoriam garland we now drop upon the grave of her who, but a few weeks ago, obeyed the summons to " come higher". This is not the place to write anything like a biographical sketch of her to whose memory this is but a friendly offering. A simple record of facts could not be a record of Mrs. Lucy Wilson's life. There was something in her life, as there is in the life of every meek, modest, Christian Woman, that cannot be told in words - something intangible, indescribable, spirituelle; something that could be felt and never forgotten.
She did noble deeds, not dreamed them all day long;
And made life, death and that vast forever
One vast sweet song.
And it is thus that we think and shall ever think of her life - a life of duty yet a life that was as if inspired thought set to beautiful music. And of that music there will ever be echoes along the corridors of time - echoes that are in accord with the songs that are sung by the angels and by her around the Father's great white throne. A FRIEND

Notes for William Whitacre Wilson:
William was a printer by trade was born sometime around 1830, in Maryland, according to the 1860 &1870 census. (Family tradition is that he was from New Jersey.) He lived in Maryland, Wilkes County, Atlanta, Nashville, and probably back in Atlanta . He was an Oddfellow and a Mason. Family tradition was that President Wilson was a distant relative. I haven't found the connection as yet. Co incidences are that both Wilson families were printers Pres. Woodrow Wilson was raised in Georgia after his father, Joseph Ruggles Wilson was invited down to preside at a wedding of one of his wife's family members, a Woodrow. Irwin, son of William, names a child Woodrow Wilson, really prior to President Wilson achieving fame, ie, Edgar Woodrow Wilson is not named after the president. Perhaps more than one Woodrow married a Wilson and this is the connection. I have put a abbreviated Woodrow Wilson family tree in FTM.

I can't find a William Wilson that fits in Georgia in 1850 but he would only be 19 or 20 years old and could still be living in Maryland. There is only one William W. Wilson that fits (and he is "claimed") in the Maryland 1850 Census and that certainly doesn't make him "ours" but here it is:

Here is a theory as to why William came to Wilkes. There is a printer there named William H. Wilson who trains apprentice printers. William could be a relative who apprenticed with William H Wilson and then moved to Atlanta.

"John J. DANIEL (Joseph J.? RLD) is also listed in records with surname "DANIELS". He owned property in the same general area as Matthew WILLIAMS and sold a tract to him. He was involved in property transactions with his mother around the time of the death of his brother Holloway and when he was executor of Holloway's estate.
John and Harriet DANIEL had four children.
His second marriage was to Feriba STEELE." (Jerri Hall)

Joseph J. DANIEL(S) is listed in two censuses, 1850 and 60. I think the name John Joseph may have come about because Holloway named his "brothers John and William" in his LW&T in 1851, and then named Joseph J. as his executor. (RLD)

J. A. KIDD (son-in-law, husband of Mary J.) was the Administrator for Joseph John DANIEL. (William M. Daniel, Saint Charles, Mo.)

McAdoo, placed his family in the care of Edward Butts while he was away. As a result of this request, Edward Butts attempted to cross the Oconee river with supplies for the McAdoo family. His bateau was capsized and he was drowned near Fraley's Ferry. He left one son, Edward E. Butts, who still survives."
