General Notes: Husband -
"Milledge Lipscomb Bonham, the son of Milledge Luke Bonham, married, as you know, Martha "Daisy" Aldrich, a daughter of Alfred Proctor Aldrich and his wife Martha Anna Ayer. Milledge Lipscomb Bonham wrote that his wife Daisy was never called Martha and was known just as Daisy all her life, so much so that few knew her real name. As you also know, Daisy's brother, Robert Aldrich, married Milledge Lipscomb Bonham's sister, Sophie Smith Bonham. Milledge and Daisy Bonham named one of their 3 children Milledge Louis Bonham. I have never found a hint of where the name Louis came from, but I suspect Milledge Lipscomb Bonham enjoyed the thought of again changing the middle name while keeping the initial letter of the middle name the same.
Milledge Lipscomb Bonham was chief justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court." (Charles Andrews, 7.09.2006)

"Milledge Lipscomb Bonham 1854-1943
Milledge Bonham served as Judge of the Tenth Circuit from 1924-1931, as an Associate Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court from 1931-1940, and as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court from 1940-1943.
He practiced law in Anderson. He was married to Miss Daisy Aldrich and, following her death, he married Dr. Lillian L. Carter.
He was prominent in politics, fraternal orders, church activities, historical societies, social organizations and organized Bar efforts.
The respect accorded him as a man and able lawyer is evidenced by the fact that he was not a member of the Legislature when elevated to the Bench.
"Like the leaders of the Old South, he too, made as his greatest contribution grace and nobility of Character."

Milledge Louis Bonham became a college history professor with a PhD in history.
The matter of three MLBs (Milledge L. BONHAM) with different middle names becomes even more interesting when you find that the third one, Milledge Louis Bonham, signed his name, M. L. Bonham, Jr. This was after his grandfather had died, but he had the identical name of neither his father nor his grandfather. This confusing signature has often led to people assuming and reporting at times that his name was Milledge Lipscomb Bonham or at other times reporting that it was Milledge Luke Bonham.
Milledge Louis Bonham and his wife, Odelle Warren, had their only child after 17 years of marriage, there was already an MLB of the fourth generation. So they named their belated son, Luke Warren Bonham. Luke then picked the tradition back up by naming his first child, Milledge Lipscomb Bonham." (Charles Andrews, 7.09.2006)

General Notes: Husband -
Milledge Luke BONHAM was the youngest of eight children born to James BONHAN and Sophia SMITH.
"James and Sophia Smith Bonham (my GGGG grandparents) named their youngest child Milledge Luke Bonham. Luke Smith was Sophia's brother. He had married a woman named Elizabeth Lamar (my GGG grandmother by her 2nd marriage). Elizabeth's sister, Ann, was married to John Milledge, governor and senator from Georgia, who lived near Augusta, Georgia just across the Savannah River from the Bonhams, who lived near the Little Saluda River in Edgefield District, South Carolina. Thus Milledge Luke Bonham was named for his uncle and for his aunt's brother-in-law.
Milledge Luke Bonham's oldest sister was Sarah Marcy Bonham (my GGG grandmother) who married John Lipscomb (my GGG grandfather). John and Sarah Lipscomb named one of their 12 children Milledge Bonham Lipscomb, in honor of her brother Milledge Luke Bonham. In return, Milledge Luke Bonham and his wife Ann Patience Griffin named one of their 14 children, Milledge Lipscomb Bonham. Milledge Luke Bonham did not have a son named Milledge Luke Bonham. Imagine the humor and confusion when first cousins Milledge Bonham Lipscomb and Milledge Lipscomb Bonham were in the same room.
Milledge Luke Bonham was South Carolina's Civil War governor and a Confederate general. "
(Charles Andrews. 7.09.2006)
"Brigadier-General Milledge Luke Bonham was born near Red Bank, Edgefield district, 22 December 1813, the son of Captain James Bonham, who came from Virginia to South Carolina about the close of the last century, and married Sophie, daughter of Jacob Smith, niece of Captain James Butler, head of an illustrious South Carolina family. The grandfather of General Bonham was Major Absalom Bonham, a native of Maryland and a soldier of the Revolutionary War. General Bonham, after graduation at the South Carolina college, had his first military experience as a volunteer in the company of Captain James Jones, in the Seminole war, and was promoted to brigade major, a position corresponding to adjutant-general of brigade. Subsequently, while beginning his career as a lawyer and legislator, he continued his association with the militia and attained the rank of major-general. When war began with Mexico he went to the front as lieutenant-colonel of the Twelfth United States infantry, and served with distinction, earning promotion to colonel, and remained in Mexico a year after the close of the war, as military governor of one of the provinces. Then returning home he resumed the practice of law, was elected solicitor of the southern circuit, and in 1856, upon the death of Preston S. Brooks, was chosen as the successor of that gentleman in Congress. Upon the secession of the State he promptly resigned and was appointed commander-in-chief of the South Carolina army, with the rank of major- general. In this capacity, and waiving all questions of rank and precedence, at the request of Governor Pickens, he served upon the coast in hearty cooperation with General Beauregard, sent there by the provisional government of the Confederate States. At a later date he was commissioned brigadier-general in the provisional army, and he took to Richmond the first troops, not Virginian, that arrived for the defense of the capital. His regiments were commanded by Colonels Kershaw, Williams, Cash and Bacon, and were conspicuous in the operations before Washington and in the first battle of Manassas. Afterward, in consequence of a disagreement with the war department, he resigned and was elected to the Confederate Congress. In December 1862, he was elected governor of the State, an office which he filled with credit. In January 1865, he was appointed to command of a brigade of cavalry, in the organization of which he was engaged at the close of military operations. His subsequent career was marked by the same ardent patriotism. As a delegate to President Grant from the taxpayers' convention, and a supporter of the revolution of 1876, he rendered the State valuable service. He was the first railroad commissioner of South Carolina, in 1878, and subsequently chairman of the commission until his death, 27 August 1890. As a soldier he is described as "one of the finest looking officers in the entire army. His tall, graceful figure, commanding appearance, noble bearing and soldierly mien, all excited the admiration and confidence of his troops. He wore a broad-brimmed hat with a waving plume, and sat his horse with the knightly grace of Charles the Bold or Henry of Navarre. His soldiers were proud of him, and loved to do him homage. While he was a good disciplinarian, so far as the volunteer service required, he did not treat his officers with any air of superiority." (Confederate Military History Vol. 5, pg. 377)

General Notes: Wife -
Patience, 40, SC, is named as the wife of Milledge BONHAM in the 1870 census. Ann, 50, SC, is named as his wife in 1880. They appear to be the same person, hence the name Ann Patience. (BONHAM researcher, Charles Andrews confirms the this name.)

"Dr. William Henry TRENT (my 3x great grandfather) married Martha Green JACKSON, March 27, 1846 in Fayette County, Tennessee. They are together with William's children on the 1850 census in Fayette County, and William died there in 1854. I do not know if William had a will. William Henry was born on February 10th just over a week before William Henry senior died. William Henry Jr. (10 Feb 1854 - 29 Mar 1932) (my great-great grandfather) moved with his mother Martha to Texas and they are found in Williamson [sic, Anderson] County on the 1860 Census, with William worth $10,000, indicating that William Sr. perhaps left him something. Martha married Reuben BONNER shortly after arriving in Williamson County in 1854. They had one child Robert T. BONNER in 1857. Martha died December 23, 1878 in Hill County, Texas. William P. BOOKER, born in April 1874, was a son of W. R. and Manda BOOKER. William, age 4, in the 1880 census, is one of two sons, Joseph the other, age 4. Ostensibly, they are twins, but the 1900 census provides that William was born in 1874. He is a brother of Melia BOOKER, mother of Ida DENNEY who married Jim DANIEL, son of Jesse Thomas DANIEL and Emma T. WOODRUFF. William married Mary Susan DANIEL, Jim DANIEL's sister.

About his census listing: Elizabeth T., 7, and David R., 5, are William's children by his first wife, Sara BOON (BOONE?). William Holman DAVIS married Mary Amanda REED, the widow HALBERT, in 1857. Richard, 1, is their son. Elizabeth, 82, is the mother of William and David, 45. A David KELSEY, 9, lived in the household of David W. DAVIS (David, 45, here the same most likely as Elizabeth is his mother who was living with him in 1850 as were William and their sister Rebecca.) The situation of the marriage became tenuous at best, resulting in their divorcing after 34 years of marriage. The divorce was effective 20 Sep 1915. Thomas' descendant, Linda MARSH explains below.
"I do not believe Thomas F. MARSH married Josephine EPPS. I am lead to believe this was a unique common law situation, if you will. I was told Martha (Lou BOONE) was a very loving woman. And when it was truly discovered that her husband was having his way with Josephine it was at that time that she said to Josephine "go get all your children" (Perhaps there were three at that time and one on the way) and come live here in my house and I will move to my other house cross town. I am lead to believe that the marriage between Martha and Thomas had deteriorated or he was just taking advantage of the situation at hand. He fathered 11 children with Josephine. Martha had two children: Thomas Cade MARSH and Beulah MARSH; I believe she passed before of at birth. There are no records for her that I can find. I must try to get cemetery records [with the help of the genealogist specialist prior, it appeared that the graves sites are listed with marker (numbers not names)] to see if she is buried in Mansfield Desoto Parish, or other surrounding Parishes and counties near Mansfield, and in the state of Louisiana.
The relatives down in Louisiana tell me Martha was a very, very nice woman. She must have loved Josephine in her own way and felt she would be better off there on their property to raise her children with Tom, as she was much younger. My take on it so far is, she most likely worked in their home as a young girl. And live afar. Martha must have taken her into consideration as she continued to come up pregnant, as it must have become harder and harder for her to get back and forth. I wish I had all the facts. I will continue to try to unravel as much information as I can. Most living relatives here, have very little recollection of their grandmother. Josephine was born March 1890 and died September 1, 1930, [Josephine died 9 years after Martha] at age 41 years; Thomas F. MARSH was born in 1855; died May 15, 1928, approx. 73 years old [seven years after Martha]; he was 35 years Josephine's senior. Martha Lou BOONE born October 26, 1856, in Mansfield - Desoto Parish, Louisiana; died May 24, 1921, in Dodson (Winn), LA at 64 years old.
There is record of Josephine EPPS working in the Arthur NOLAND household as a servant in Sabine Parish in the 1900's.
On the land records Thomas F. MARSH purchased property in 1890. He had a donation of property from Claudia MOSLEY in 1890. And purchased several more pieces of property in 1890.
(Linda MARSH)
Philip's Chapel was first known as Philip's Chapel Methodist Church (previously Episcopal) moved to Mansfield from Benson after 1900.
Josephine EPPS (my great grandmother) b: abt. March 1890; died September 1, 1930, in Desoto Parish at the age of 41 years. (Linda MARSH)

"Title: DavidBothwellgenealogy.FTW:
Ebenezer Bothwell was a cotton planter and member of House of Representatives, Jefferson Co, in 1817.
According to "The History of Lee County Georgia" Captain Ebenezer Bothwell was in command of Fort Early on the Flint River in 1818.
He was town commissioner of Louisville, 1827 ( History of St. George's Parish, by Marion Little Durden, Magnolia Press, Swainsbo ro, Ga 1983) Old records found in the old Capitol building also show Ebenezer being appointed trustee for Louisville Academy in 1827.
In 1850 census, Mary and Ebbin are listed as being 58 years of age and owning land valued at $4000. ( p.156 in Jefferson County, GA).
Moved from Jefferson County to Dooly County in 1850s, apparently after his wife's death (two of his sons, William C. and David J. were located in Dooly County during that time).
Will dated March 1868 was made in Richmond County, Georgia. This will names son James T. Bothwell as executor and leaves property of lands and notes to benefit sons James T. Bothwell, Samuel E. Bothwell, David J. Bothwell and the sons of son William C. Bothwell.
Found burial marker on private land (now a tree farm, owned by Mennonites) "Bothwell cemetery" on Bothwell Road just outside (north) of Louisville, Jefferson County. This headstone gives his birth and death date. There were two other markers in this burial place, they were buried almost to the top - names or dates could not be seen." {Hooks (Owner is deceased.) 2004-09-03 Contact: Faye Dyess, http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=hooksfdy&id=I21415}
