"South Carolina, Saluda County.
Personally comes the undersigned, John Threewits Nicholson, who on oath says that he is now 87 years of age and was born and reared in Edgefield county, and has for a long number of years resided where he now lives, to wit, near Ridge Spring, in Saluda County. That Saluda county was formed out of Edgefield county. That deponent has heard his father and mother state that they had seen and talked with numerous people who knew Emily Geiger or knew of Emily Geiger. That deponents mother was a Threewits and it was the common reputation in the family of deponent's father and mother that Emily Geiger married John Threewits, a blood relative of deponent's mother and of deponent. Furthermore, that it was the general reputation in deponent's mother's family that Emily Geiger carried a message during the Revolutionary War and was captured by the British while carrying said message. That after the Revolutionary War, it was the common reputation in his mother's family, and said reputation was accepted as being true, that she married John Threewits, and lived in Lexington County, a few miles west of Columbia, and died there.
John Threewits Nicholson.
Sworn to before me this Sep. 9, 1922, Henry C. Smith, Notary Public for S.C."

"Henry's son William named a daughter after her (his sister), Mary Leviston HURST, 20 February 1848. William also seems to have had two sons named Henry, both of whom died young and are buried at Walnut Ridge. I have 12 Apr 1857 as William's date of death, assuming that was in Mississippi. Wife Anna Isabella BODLEY died 1853 location unknown to me. Henry's son, William, his line forward, seems fairly well documented, as two of his descendents joined the DAR and provided data (Sue Palham TRIGG and Mary Hurst TRIGG)." "My grandfather Thomas Boggess and his wife were born in Loudon County, Virginia, and moved to Lewis County, Kentucky in 1814, and settled on the Poplar Flat. My grandfather and grandmother in early times rode horseback from Poplar Flat to Loudon County, Virginia. My grandmother had two sons and five daughters. My family is the only descendants in this state. My grandfather Boggess died in 1832 and my grandmother Boggess in 1839. My father and family were living at her house at the time of her death. Both are buried in a graveyard at the Savage place on Poplar Flat. My grandmother Boggess made a will and gave (a) slave girl to my mother. The girl married John Dennis in 1842. Dennis was a slave belonging to William Esham--he bought his from my mother and paid 300 in silver for her--the girl was worth $600 at the time of the sale. Jim and John Dennis are sons of Ellen Dennis, the girl--both lived in this town at the time."

2 M Archie Gilford EILAND
Born: Cir 1907 Christened: Died: Buried:
General Notes: Husband -
"LEVI DANIEL EILAND (1877-1967) was the first postmaster of the Elfers post office when it was established on Dec. 14, 1909. He was born in Dade City on July 7, 1877. In the 1900 census he is shown as a boarder living in Jasper, Florida, although he is said to have founded the Jasper Normal School. He was the principal of the Tampa Grammar School in 1903 when he married his wife, who chose the name Elfers for the post office (see the entry below). He is shown as living in Suwannee county in the 1917 military registration index. A 1922 newspaper article (unseen) reported that Dan Eiland was planting a five acre tract at Seven Springs, in early vegetables, and that his friends in Elfers have missed him since he moved to Seven Springs and they wish him success with his venture. In the 1930 census he is shown as a farmer and his wife is shown as a teacher, both living in Odessa. He died Jan. 4, 1967, in Gainesville, where he and his wife are buried." [Jon James and Terri Allen provided information for this...entry.] ( HISTORY OF PASCO COUNTY (FL) Early Residents of Pasco County, http://fivay.org/pasco2e.html)
General Notes: Wife -
"FRIEDA MARIE (BOLLING) EILAND (1884-1981) chose the name "Elfers" for the post office which was established on Dec. 14, 1909, apparently naming it for her grandfather, whose last name was Elfers. A postal history source lists her husband Levi Daniel Eiland as the first postmaster of Elfers, but in a 2001 letter, Elizabeth "Beth" Eiland Bedenbaugh, a daughter, wrote: "My mom was the post mistress (my dad was occupied with a job with J. M. Mitchell there in Elfers). The post office was new and mom was asked to give the town and post office a name. She chose Elfers because that was her mother's maiden name." In a 1961 article about Rev. Marvin J. Eiland, a son of Frieda, John Parkes wrote, "The town of Elfers was named for Rev. Eiland's great-grandfather." In an April 1978 interview, Mrs. J. M. Mitchell recalled that Mrs. Frieda Eiland named the post office for "a dear uncle of hers whose last name was Elfers." (This is probably not correct.) Frieda Marie Bolling was born July 24, 1884, in Louisville, Ky. After the death of her father in 1889, she moved with her mother and a brother to Apopka, Florida. On July 29, 1903, she married Levi Daniel Eiland at the home of her mother in Apopka. Rev. Marvin Jones Eiland, a son, was born at their Seven Springs home on April 20, 1922. (He became pastor of Curlew Baptist Church.) She died on Sept. 19, 1981, in Deland. The father of Frieda Marie Bolling was Gottlieb Frederick Bolling, who died in 1889. The maiden name of the mother of Frieda Marie Bolling was Maria Elfers; she died in Tampa in 1915. [Jon James and Terri Allen provided information for this and the preceding entry.]

"HARTLEY HOUSE" This house was built before 1800 for John Pearson BOND, according to local tradition it later came into possession of John Bates of the family from whom Batesburg derives its name, and has been owned for over a century by Lodwick HARTLEY and his family. It was the first meeting place of the Batesville Masonic lodge and was a stagecoach mail stop. Lexington Historical Society - 1970

Stephen DANIEL, born between 1790 and 1800, is the youngest child of William and Lucretia Bell DANIEL of Edgefield, South Carolina. From his father's Will: "To my beloved son Stephen Daniel I give and bequeath my land where I now live after the death of his mother including all the land lying on both sides of Mine Creek containing two thousand acres more or less....I desire that my wife educate my sons William & Stephen DANIEL out of her money. I appoint Phillip RAFORD & my sons Jesse and James DANIEL as executors. wit: Mumford PERRYMAN, John PERMENTER & Sally MOBLEY..." Signed: William DANIEL. Proved by the oath of John PERMENTER this 6 May 1807 & at the same time qualified Philip RAFORD, Jesse & James DANIEL as executors & recorded the 11 May 1807".
Steven is said to have married Matilda BOND, daughter of John Pearson BOND and Abigail Sarah FAIRCHILD and granddaughter of Thomas BOND and Mary Ann PEARSON.
MARRIAGE CONFLICT! Matilda Bond married Stephen DANIEL [son of William DANIEL and Lucretia BELL of Edgefield County, South Carolina] per Franklin Farmer in Known Descendants of Elias (WREYFORD) RAIFORD.
"Matilda, married Joseph DANIEL." per Batesburg-Leesville Area History, p. 33, compiled by the Chamber of Commerce. [No records yet found in South Carolina for Joseph DANIEL indicate a wife, Matilda. RLD]
This compiler believes the Stephen DANIEL who died between 16 December 1839 and 6 March 1840 in Chambers County, Alabama is the son of William and Lucretia DANIEL of Edgefield District. Stephen left a widow, Matilda H. DANIEL and seven children. Descendants of their son, Stephen Augustus DANIEL of Freestone County, Texas, maintain that his father was from Edgefield County, South Carolina. In addition to their published family tradition, this belief is supported by circumstantial records:
a. The 1820 census of Edgefield District, Stephen's household consists of himself, age 20-30, and a female, 16-26, no children. Matilda was born 2 June 1804.
b. Stephen DANIEL had administered the estate of James F. BOND in 1823 in Edgefield District, South Carolina.
c. Stephen's older brother, Jesse DANIEL married Matilda's older sister, Martha Sarah BOND.
d. Their three eldest children, Jesse, Emeline, and Stephen Augustus match the age ranges for Stephen's children in the 1830 census of Edgefield County, South Carolina and match the age ranges for his widow Matilda H. DANIEL's children in the 1840 census of Chambers County, Alabama.
e. Stephen's move from South Carolina to Chambers County, Alabama between 1834 and 1836. He died there between 16 December 1839 and 6 March 1840.
f. Matilda H.'s age, 45, and her birth in South Carolina as in the 1850 census of Vicksburg, Warren County, Mississippi. Later censuses for their children show both parents were born in South Carolina.
g. Stephen Augustus DANIEL moved to Freestone County, Texas soon after 1865 and was closely associated there with the family of his aunt, William and Lucretia's daughter, Mary Daniel HATCHER and his first cousins, William Francis DANIEL and Mary A. Daniel HATCHER, wife of John Washington BLACKMON.
A deed in Edgefield County dated 13 December 1817 shows Peter HERRIN to John HERRIN where John HERRIN bought 400 acres of land adj. to Stephen DANIEL.
Stephen DANIEL married Matilda BOND before the 1820 census.

General Notes: Wife -
Matilda H. BOND, daughter of John Pearson BOND and Abigail Sarah FAIRCHILD, was born 2 June 1804. She was a granddaughter of Thomas BOND and Mary Ann PEARSON.
Matilda is said to have married Stephen DANIEL, son of William DANIEL and Lucretia BELL of Edgefield District, South Carolina.
MARRIAGE CONFLICT!
Matilda married Stephen DANIEL [son of William DANIEL and Lucretia BELL of Edgefield County, South Carolina] per Franklin Farmer in his Known Descendants of Elias (WREYFORD) RAIFORD.
"Matilda, married Joseph DANIEL." per Batesburg-Leesville Area History, p. 33, published by the Chamber of Commerce. [No records yet found in South Carolina for Joseph DANIEL indicate a wife, Matilda. RLD]
Matilda H. DANIEL of Chambers County, Alabama in 1840 is believed by this compiler to be the widow of Stephen DANIEL, son of William and Lucretia BELL of Edgefield District, South Carolina. This assignment is based on published family tradition among the descendants of Stephen and Matlida's son, Stephen Augustus DANIEL of Freestone County, Texas, that his father was from Edgefield County, South Carolina and supported by:
a. The 1820 census of Edgefield District, Stephen's household consists of himself, age 20-30, and a female, 16-26, no children.
b. Matilda's sister Martha Sarah BOND married Jesse DANIEL, Stephen's brother.
c. Stephen DANIEL had administered the estate of James F. BOND in 1823 in Edgefield District, South Carolina.
d. Stephen's brother, Jesse DANIEL had married Matilda's older sister, Martha Sarah BOND.
e. Stephen's move from South Carolina to Chambers County, Alabama between 1834 and 1836. He died there between 16 December 1839 and 6 March 1840 and named Matilda, his wife, as his executrix.
f. Their three eldest children, Jesse, Emeline, and Stephen Augustus match the age ranges for Stephen's children in the 1830 census of Edgefield County, South Carolina and match the age ranges for his widow Matilda H. DANIEL's children in the 1840 census of Chambers County, Alabama.
g. Matilda H.'s age, 45, and her birth in South Carolina as in the 1850 census of Vicksburg, Warren County, Mississippi. Later censuses for their children show both parents were born in South Carolina.
h. Stephen Augustus DANIEL moved to Freestone County, Texas soon after 1865 and was closely associated there with the family of his father's sister Mary Daniel HATCHER and his first cousins William Francis DANIEL and Mary A. Daniel HATCHER, wife of John Washington BLACKMON.

Matilda and her husband moved from SC to AL about 1835, between the births of their daughters Martha, about 1834 in SC, and Catherine, about 1836 in Alabama.
"Matilda, now Mrs. DANIEL" is named in the appellate court decision of a case "decided by his Honor Chancellor JOHNSTON, at Edgefield, June 1836, and upon appeal, his decree was affirmed in May, 1837." (reported in Dudley's Eq. Rep. p. 71) 1843 South Carolina Equity Court case, "Jonathan M. HILL and wife vs. Henry H. HILL and John BATES, administrators." Matilda's sister Lucinda and husband Jonathan M. HILL, residents of Alabama, sued the estate administrators of her brothers, Felix Paddon BOND and Thomas Stanmore HILL, over the distributions of slaves deeded to them by her father. Matilda DANIEL presented Stephen's Will, dated 16 December 1839, in Court in Troup County, Georgia, in the March 1840 session. It was and recorded on 6 March 1840. Carol was preceded in death by her husband of twenty years, Willard G. Anderson.
She worked for Browning Motors for many years before joining her son-in-law and staff at the State Farm Office in Paola as a receptionist, greeting and helping customers for over 7 years.
Carol loved playing the piano, reading the Bible, raising and showing Afghan Hounds, growing roses and watching football on television. She was devoted to her family and friends and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Services are Tuesday, December 28, 10:30 a.m. at Cross Point Church in Paola and arrangements were handled by Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home in Paola. Memorials may be made to the Miami County Chapter of the American Cancer Society or Cross Point Assembly of God Church in Carol's honor.

General Notes: Wife -
James and Sophia Smith Bonham (my GGGG grandparents) named their youngest child Milledge Luke Bonham. Luke Smith was Sophia's brother. He had married a woman named Elizabeth Lamar (my GGG grandmother by her 2nd marriage). Elizabeth's sister, Ann, was married to John Milledge, governor and senator from Georgia, who lived near Augusta, Georgia just across the Savannah River from the Bonhams, who lived near the Little Saluda River in Edgefield District, South Carolina. Thus Milledge Luke Bonham was named for his uncle and for his aunt's brother-in-law. (Charles Andrews. 7.09.2006)
