Obit of A. B. Dean, The Greenwood Index, Jan 12, 1899, p. 1: Mr. A. B. Dean, coroner of Greenwood Co, died at his home in this city about two o'clock Tuesday morning. He was in his usual health the day before, and just before retiring Monday night remarked that he was feeling unusally well. About two o'clock one of his sons was awakened by hearing his father groaning, and on going to his bedside found him nearly unconscious. He complained of a pain in the region of his heart. A physician was at once sent for, but before he arrived Mr. Dean was dead. Mr. Dean was about 72 years old and was a native of the Edgefield section of Greenwood Co. He was born near Dorn's Mill. He was a quiet, peaceable gentleman and had the respect and esteem of all who knew him. His remains were interred in the city cemetery yesterday." General Notes: Wife - Ann BOWLING

Ann Nancy BOWLING, daughter of Gerard BOWLING and Martha MOXLEY, was born about 1762 in Fairfax County, Virginia. She was named as Ann WISE in her father's will of 1779. When the will was settled in 1798, her share of 90 pounds was paid to Peter WISE by Robert BOWLING. Ann Nancy BOWLING was said to be the second wife of John O'DANIEL by Fairfax Harrison in his contribution to Tyler's Quarterly. The above stated information shows that she was indeed the wife of Peter WISE, not of John O'DANIEL who died in 1799.

General Notes: Husband - Richard RATCLIFFE

Richard RATCLIFFE "... was the son of John RATCLIFFE and Ann (Smith) MOXLEY, the widow of Thomas MOXLEY..." [The Fare Facs Gazette, Vol. 3, Issue 1, Winter 2005, William Page Johnson, II, Richard Ratcliffe: The Founder]

Richard married Louisiana BOWLING, daughter of Gerrard BOWLING and Martha (Smith) MOXLEY. Richard was associated with and succeeded to the mercantile businesss of his father-in-law.

"An Act of the Assembly was passed December 4, 1789, directing two acres of land to be purchased and the county buildings to be erected "within one mile of the cross roads, near Prie's Ordinary," that being near the center of the County (Fairfax). But it was not until 1801 that the present Court-House was completed, on land deeded by Richard RATCLIFFE, and the Court removed." (The History of Truro Parish in Virginia, by Rev. Philip Slaughter, D.D., page 17, George W. Jacobs & Co., 1908, Philadelphia)

Richard RATCLIFFE was the father-in-law of Stephen DANIEL, a son of John O'DANIEL. Richard witnessed the Indenture dated 13 May 1797, in which John O'DANIEL and his wife, Ann McINTOSH, sold 1000 acres of John's Kentucky land grant to their son, William, who was identified in the indenture as "William O'DANIEL of the County of Edgefield, District of Ninety six and State of South Carolina."

The Cemeteries of Fairfax County, Virginia contains this quote concerning the RATCLIFFE Family Cemetery: "The RATCLIFFE Family has lived in this area since the 1700's. RICHARD RATCLIFFE (1751-1825) donated the land upon which the Fairfax County Courthouse stands and petitioned the General Assembly for the right to sell lots for what would become the Town of Fairfax. There is evidence of 50+ burials, but only 5 gravestones are recorded. The site has been abandoned for many years and has been vandalized repeatedly. The cemetery is overgrown and neglected." (http://www.co.fairfax.va.us/library/branches/vr/cem/cem088.htm)

This grave marker transcription is found in the website above as being in the Ratcliffe Family Cemetery: "WINEFRED E. RATCLIFFE Died Dec. 3d. 1853 Aged 51 years." (Relationship unknown) The surname SKINNER is also found among the listings in this cemetery.

"Ratcliffe/Coleman/Hanna Family Cemetery Located 10 yards east of Centreville Rd., between Worldgate Dr. and Dulles Toll Rd., Herndon, Va. This is the burial place of the noted Confederate spy LAURA RATCLIFFE HANNA and her husband MILTON HANNA. The Hanna Family home, "Merrybrook", still stands at 2346 Centreville Rd. The cemetery is surrounded by a 20' x 20' wrought iron fence and contains only one inscribed marker, a large granite marker inscribed on one side. The cemetery is clean and well maintained, although a dense hedge surrounds the fence obscuring it's presence to casual passersby." (http://www.co.fairfax.va.us/library/branches/vr/cem/cem064.htm)

Richard RATCLIFFE in his will of 29 March 1815, proved 17 October 1825, named his wife "Lucian"; sons, Robert, Charles and Samuel; daughters, Penelope JACKSON, Nancy W. DANIEL, Jane MOSS, Patsey, "Lucian"RATCLIFFE (Mrs, George W. GUNNELL); grandsons Frances J. RATCLIFFE, Richard Jno. DANIEL, Charles JACKSON, John MOSS, Robert RATCLIFFE, and Richard RATCLIFFE. (The names of the parents of Richard's grandsons, Robert and Richard RATCLIFFE, have not been found.)

A biography of Richard RATCLIFFE by William Page Johnson, II, is published in The Fare Facs Gazette, Vol. 3, Issue 1, Winter 2005, on line at http://www.historicfairfax.org/HFCI31.pdf. 125

General Notes: Wife - Sarah Frances BOYCE

Sarsh Frances BOYCE is named in the History of Fairfield County, South Carolina, Ederington, on p. 37. She is named a "Fanny N. 18" on the 1860 census of Fairfield County, South Carolina. The 1900 census provides she was born in June 1842.

1870 U.S. Census, Virginia, Fairfax County, Mt Vernon Twp; Series: M593 Roll: 1645 Page: 335:35 32 GAILLARD Richard 40 M W Farmer ---- 1200 SC; -- Frances 28 F W Keeping House SC; BOYCE William 52 M W Lawyer 17,000 4,500 SC; -- Mary E. 50 F W Boarding SC; HERBERT Emeline 48 F W At home ----- 13,000 SC; WILLY Lucy 23 F B Domestic S VA. In 1870, Frances, Mary BOYCE's daughter, is keeping house for Richard. This census indicates Richard and Sarah have been married 35 years. In addition, Mary is listed as having one child, doubtlessly Frances, and one child living, making "Sarah" to be Sarah Frances BOYCE.

The censuses list no children for Richard Walter GAILLARD and Sarah Frances BOYCE.

General Notes: Wife - Mary Elizabeth PEARSON

Mary Elizabeth PEARSON married William Waters BOYCE on 17 Oct 1838.

In a typescript in the South Carolina archives of the Last Will & Testament of her grandfather, James ALSTON, Mary is listed among grandchildren as "Mary E. BOYER", perchance a misread of the handwriten "Boyce."

From the Mary Elizabeth Pearson Boyce diary, Manuscript volume, 1854-1855, of Mary Elizabeth Pearson Boyce (1820-1908) contains a record of fourteen months in the life of a prominent Fairfield County woman. The daughter of Dr. George Butler and Elizabeth Alston Pearson, Mary was married to attorney William Waters Boyce, who served South Carolina as state legislator and U.S. Congressman. The Boyces and their children lived until after the Civil War with Mrs. Boyce's parents in their plantation home known as Fonti Flora.
Mrs. Boyce made the following notation on 24 October 1855: "This is Mr. Boyce's & my birthday, he is 37 & I 35 years of age." Only a week earlier, they had celebrated their seventeenth wedding anniversary. (http://www.sc.edu/library/socar/uscs/1997/boyce97.html)

Contrary to the above, the BOYCE family is not listed with Mary's family in the 1850 or 1860 censuses.

In 1900, Mary BOYCE is 78, living in the home of her son-in-law, Richard GAILLIARD, 70, in Fairfax County, Virginia. Richard has been married for 35 years to Sarah, born June 1842. A second wife? Mary's daughter was Frances B. BOYCE.

"don't know if this will help you but in the Ga. Archives, I found in the Bradford files a Tabitha Bradford m. Henry Pope in 1748. Henry was b. 1728 Edgecombe, Nc., d.1/2/1764. Will listed in Halifax, Nc. lists wife, Tabitha, sons, Burwell, Henry Augustine, and John of Wake co., NC, and a son Wiley (1758-1819) Burwell Pope b. 1752, d. 1800 in Wilkes Co., Ga. m. Priscilla Wooten. They also had Tabitha married to Thomas Wooten in 1769 and moved to Ga. where both died about 1808. I don't know how accurate this is as I am not researching this line. According to some Tabitha Bradford also married a Samuel Crowell which is the lineage I am interested in but my Tabitha was born in 1756 and married a Samuel Crowell with children born in the 1780s. Samuel Crowell died in 1826. Can't be the same Tabitha Bradford. [Thomas Hawkins, March 05, 2000, http://genforum.genealogy.com/bradford/messages/1128.html]
