In Memoriam
BLAKENEY. In loving but sad remembrance of my devoted mother, HANNAH F. BLAKENEY, who entered into rest one year ago today, August 9, 1900.
'Tis only a little way there I shall see
My mother, who in "glory" is waiting for me;
Her voice from "heaven" now floats on the air,
She is calling me tenderly, calling me there.

In Memoriam
BLAKENEY. In loving but sad remembrance of my devoted mother, HANNAH F. BLAKENEY, who entered into rest one year ago today, August 9, 1900.
'Tis only a little way there I shall see
My mother, who in "glory" is waiting for me;
Her voice from "heaven" now floats on the air,
She is calling me tenderly, calling me there.
BY HER DEVOTED DAUGHTER, EMMA B. GALPIN

General Notes: Husband - James Townsend BLAKENEY

James Townsend BLAKENEY, son of Abel BLAKENEY and Mary O'DANIEL, was born 24 January 1807 in Alexandria County, District of Columbia.*

*"In 1791 President George Washington determined that the survey to establish the boundaries of the ten-mile-square Federal District should begin at Jones Point, south of Alexandria, and should proceed northwestward so as to exclude the Falls Church. The survey was made that summer, and boundary stones were set up at one-mile intervals. The District of Columbia was not organized until 1801, however. The part of Fairfax County ceded by Virginia to federal jurisdiction was then organized as Alexandria County, which included the Town of Alexandria. All of the present Arlington County was located in the original Ten Mile Square of the District of Columbia... In 1846 the County voted in favor of retrocession, and in 1847 the retrocession was accomplished. Instead of returning the area to Fairfax County, Virginia, Alexandria County remained a separate county." [http://www.arlingtonhistoricalsociety.org/learn/snapshots/alexandria_county.html]

James T. married Sophia BOWEN on 23 Aug 1838.

His friends and acquantance are respectfully invited to attend his funeral on this (Monday) afternoon, at 3 o'clock, from his late residence , No, 13 Mott street." General Notes: Wife - Sophia BOWERS

"Sophia Bowers Blakeney, wife of James T. Blakeney, remarried Charles Hibbs on 2 August 1853. They were living together in Washington, D.C. in 1860 but they are living apart by the 1870 census. The date of marriage was taken from the Index to marriages in the (Baltimore) Sun, 1851-1860,Thomas L. Hollowak, page 26. ["Hibbs, Charles, 2 August 1853, (Mrs.) Sophia Blakeney 10/10/53-2"] She is not a direct relative but I thought you might want to close out your entry for her. I saw her name (Sophia Hibbs) as a witness to an affidavit for Sarah Blakeney's widow pension in 1864. After a little digging, I discovered who she was." [Spencer Hunt, email, 2/11/2011]

1860 census not found.

"During the Civil War, with 7 children at home ranging in age from 17 to 2 years, John D. volunteered, July 3,1863, for service in the U. S. Army. He was mustered into military service August 1, 1863, joining Combany B, Third Regiment, Cavalry, Maryland volunteers, and was a Saddler, repairing saddles, with the rank of "private", his pay was $13.00 per month. Several stories appearing in various biographical sketches of his son Albert A. Blakeney, who would eventually become a U.S. Congressman, stated #1, that a galloping horse stumbled and threw him into a tree, killing him; #2, that he was killed in a cavalry charge in North Carolina; #3, that he was "killed" in Mobile, Alabama. The truth of the matter is, that he died October 1, 1864 of severe infection associated with chronic dysentery at Fort Gaines, U.S. Army Hospital, Dauphin Island, Mobile, Alabama. He was buried in the Mobile National, Section # 3, Grave # 591, 1202 Virginia Street, Mobile, Alabama 366604." (Spencer Hunt)

General Notes: Wife - Sarah GAUNT

John was a Union soldier in the War Between The States. He died of dysentery in 1864 at Fort Gaines, U.S. Army Hospital, Dauphin Island, Mobile, Alabama. Sarah filed for a widow's pension in 1864. Sophia Gaunt Blakeney HIBBS, her sister-in-law, and remarried widow of Sarah's brother, James Townsend BLAKENEY, was a witness for her claim. [Spencer Hunt]

On 12 March 1701/2 the Governor and Council of Virginia made an address of loyalty to the King. A Similar Loyal Address was received from:
Charles City County
1702 Judges ... George BLIGHTON ... Militia Officers... George BLIGHTON

George died not long after he confirmed his loyalty to the king in 1702. His widow, Lydia , became his executor, and soon remarried to Capt. Francis CLEMENTS. George's son, George, Jr. was not of age when his father died; Nathaniel HARRISON became his guardian. From the record below, George, Jr. became of age in or about 1712. placing his birth about 1691 if age 21.

Surry Court, held August 11, 1711, Francis CLEMENT and his wife, Lydia, administer the estate of George BLIGHTON.

"On motion of Nathaniel HARRISON, guardian to George BLEIGHTON, son of George BLEIGHTON, dec'd, it is ordered that he take in his possession the estate of said orphan in hands of Francis CLEMENTS and Lydia his wife, Adm'x of George BLEIGHTON, dec'd, being £310/12/1½ and 10, 971 lbs tobacco, pursuant to accounts of estate enterred by said CLEMENTS 11 Feb. 1712." [Virginia Genealogical Society Quarterly Volume 23 Number 1, p. 32]

Prince George County Records. During the seige of Petersburgm 1864-65, almost all of the records of Prince George county were destroyed or carried off by soldiers of Grant's army. A few volumes have been recovered. The last was an order book (court proceedings) 1714-1720. Following are extracts from it:
1714 - "Suit by John WOODSON vs. Francis CLEMENTS and Lyona [sic, Lydia] his wife adninistrix of George BLEIGHTON, deceased." [Virginia will Records, Prince George County Records, p. 263.]

"Benjamin EVANS, 81 acs. (N.L.). Pr. Geo. Co., beg. at land of Capt. Geo. BLAYTON, dec'd, on W. side of Ponds Run, 16 Aug. 1715, p. 241. 10 Shill."

General Notes: Wife - Lydia LAKER

There is conflicting information on Lydia CLEMENTS' maiden name. Said by some to be Lydia VAUGHN, widow of George BLEIGHTON, by others to be Lydia BLEIGHTON daughter of George, and daughter of Benjamin LAKER and widow of George BLEIGHTON.

Lydia LAKER, widow of George BLEIGHTON, married second Francis CLEMENTS, Sr. about 1703, soon after, their son Benjamin was born.

"Lydia Clements, who bought "Goodwyns" from William Willson in 1733, was a daughter of GEORGE BLIGHTON. (Surry Court, held August 11, 1711, Francis Clement and his wife, Lydia, administer the estate of George Blighton.) [http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/PACE/2009-01/1231080789]]

On page 306 of The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Volume II, Lydia CLEMENTS is named in the 1721 Will of her step-son, Francis CLEMENTS, Jr., "mentions mother-in-law [step-mother?], Lydia CLEMENTS" as given in the text.

"Prince George County Records, 29 September 1733: William WILSON of Henrico County, Virginia, to Lydia CLEMENTS for 5 £, 100 acre plantation called "Goodwins", on Ward's Creek and one other plantation where said Lydia CLEMENTS now dwells in Martin Brandon Parish. Witnesses: Wm. AVERILL, John MINGO, Benjamin CLEMENTS, Matthew WHITFIELD, James PRIES, James CLEMENT. Recorded 9 October 1733." [http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~vapittsy/Clementgen.html]From Pritchett, "Southside Virginia Genealogies", p2563:
"In September 1733 a William WILLSON, of Henrico County, deeded "Goodwyns", a 100-acre plantation on Ward's Creek in Prince George County, to Lydia CLEMENTS. Included in the transaction was a second plantation in Martins Brandon Parish on which Lydia was then living. We do not know how Willson came to own the tracts. Lydia was the widow of Francis CLEMENTS by 1718. The nominal price of £5 suggests she was a relation. A Benjamin CLEMENTS was among the witnesses." "Loose Papers - Prince George County, Virginia Records - Deed, 9 October 1733, William Wilson to Lydia Clements 100 acres on Wards Creek
Prince George County, Virginia, Minute Book 1737-1740, Page 369: On 11 December 1739 a deed and release was made to John Smith, Jr., from Richard Ogilby & Lydia Clements, his wife; Peter Robins & Mary, his wife; and James Camp and wife, Elizabeth Clements. Benjamin Clements was brother of Elizabeth Clements, who was wife of James Camp and mother of Lucy Camp, wife of Rev.Samuel Harris.
Benjamin Clements of South Hampton County, Virginia, and Lucy Camp Harris were children of Francis Clement of Surry County. Elizabeth Cements second husband was Ambrose Dudley, Hanover County, Virginia. Capt. Francis Clements first wife was Elizabeth Meriwether, daughter of Nicholas Meriwether"
