James BARROW served in the North Carolina Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. (Clarke County, Georgia Revolutionary War List "9. James BARROW, b. 31 Jan 1757, d. 20 Jan 1828, buried in Oconee Hill Cem.; served in NC Continental Army". James' family Bible is part of the BARROW Collection at the University of Georgia at Athens.
On 7 Feb 1802, James BARROW married Nancy Hardwick DANIELL, widow of James DANIELL of Hancock County, Georgia.
August 2, 1815: "Georgia, Greene County. James MORRIS came before me...saith, that some time in...Dec. 1814, he being in company with a certain William HARDRIDGE, otherwise William HARDWICH, and sometimes called William H. HARDRIDGE, who told him that he..had a bond against Nancy DANIELL of Hancock County, signed while she was the widow of James DANIELL, deceased, for the amount of 1000 dollars...(Signed) James MORRIS. Sworn to and subscribed before me this 26th day of June 1815. (Signed) John BROWNING, J.P. From the well known character of the above named HARDWICH, I think it probable that he holds such a bond, and have therefore taken this method to apprise the public that it is a forgery. (Signed) James BARROW." ("Genealogical Abstracts From the Georgia Journal (Milledgeville) Newspaper, 1809-1840, Vol. 1, 1809-1818" by Fred R. Hartz and Emilie K. Hartz, Vidalia, Georgia, 1990, p. 436)
N. B.: This record is in circulation with "Nancy DANIELL" replaced with "Mrs. Nancy Sankey DANIEL." The words "Mrs." and "Sankey" are not in the original.
September 20, 1815 "Notice.--Whereas James DANIEL of Hancock County, did by his last will...lend to his wife, Nancy DANIEL, (who afterwards became my wife) during her life certain property...my said wife died the 18th of January 1814, on which day my claim expired...The executor of James DANIEL, deceased...received the aforesaid property, except a stock of goats...I have taken my usual care of the said Goats, but will consider them under my care only ten days after this notice. I will then drive them entirely from my plantation...Given under my hand this 11th day of September, 1815. (Signed) James BARROW" ("Genealogical Abstracts From the Georgia Journal (Milledgeville) Newspaper, 1809-1840, Vol. 1, 1809-1818" by Fred R. Hartz and Emilie K. Hartz, Vidalia, Georgia, 1990, p. 451)
After Nancy died in 1814, James BARROW married Patience CRENSHAW, and had two children by her. James BARROW died in 1828 in Baldwin County, Georgia.
(As an aside, Patience BARROW , dau. of James and third wife Patience CRENSHAW, married Colonel William McKINLEY of Baldwin County, Georgia who was a brother to one of my GGGGgrandmothers, Louisa Caroline McKINLEY. I was looking for the James DANIELL bible last week and found that the BARROW family had donated a large amount of genealogy material to the University of Georgia, a couple of feet of it on a shelf. Their limited inventory did not mention the bible but I asked them to look for me. The inventory did include the James BARROW diary and a letter or letters between William McKINLEY and one of the BARROW sons discussing the ramifications of Georgia seceding from the Union. Last Will and Testament of James BARROW, Baldwin County, GA Court of Ordinary, Will Book, Pg 272:
In the name of God! Amen, I James BARROW of the county of Baldwin and State of Georgia being in my usual state of health both of body and mind; having long since resigned all my spiritual interests to the mercy of God in Christ Jesus under whose heavenly direction I hereby dispose of all that he has given me in this World in the following manner- As soon after my death as convenient I desire my body to be buried at Beulah's by the side of my last wife (the mother of my children) all my just debts immediately paid and all my perishable property (or all except my land, negroes and what is deposited in my libre [library], sold on a suitable credit and the proceeds put on interest and applied to the future maintenance and education of my children as my Executors may judge best. My negroes I wish hired out annually at the discretion of my Executors and not set up to the highest bidder, and each family kept together as near as possible. My old negroes I desire should be taken particular care of especially my faithful old Stuard Flander and his wife Hago. To Flander I give all my wearing clothes. Let them live where they please/ they will be a blessing to any family that will do as I have done by them, at my expense. My cleared land on the east side of the river may be rented annually as long as it can be kept fenced in its present order, I wish now cleared and as little timber cut as possible, and not from a tree to a bush cut within half a mile of my Beulah House. To my son David I give my libre [library] and all my books because I wish them not scattered, but let his sister have the use of the books, and to my Daughter Patience I give my large Looking Glass, now deposited and to be kept in my library house, with my silver spoons and some glassware therein, and what else she may choose to make her legacy equal to her brother and all the rest of my estate, I wish divided equally between my two children David and Patience when David is twenty one years old and both have gotten their education if they live, and if one dies without heir the other will take the whole as I desire- My son David I desire should be kept at school in this state until he acquires as good an education as it will afford; and then if he and my Executors can agree let him be sent to the Columbian College near the City of Washington if that is in repute, or else to some other to complete his Education, if his means will afford it.- My Daughter Patience I desire my near and dear neighbor Mrs. Thomas Stubbs will take and bring her up as her own child at the expense of my estate, and what Mrs. Stubbs thinks proper she may reserve for the child's use, at the sale of my property. I loan to my nephew Jacob Barrow, to occupy himself but not subject to his debts or to dispose of in any other way, my little field two miles up the west side of the Occonee River from Milledgeville, with the small woods adjoining to it, to the road to Carter's Mills, and to cut no other timber or suffer it to be cut by others, and his choice of my houses in Milledgeville with half the lot, and the use of my libre [library] on being accountable for all the books, to which my children are to have accept, and loan none otherwise, where he is to keep a regular account of all that concerned my family or estate and account to my other Executors who will account with him to the court, this loan to continue until the first of my children shall marry or come of age and then delivered to them in good order.- Rachel and her family consisting of Rachel, Simon, Charles, Dinah, Isaac, Saressy, Nancy, Josiah and Sam, I wish delivered to Mrs. Pasty LEWIS as soon as my Executors can properly divest my business and get her receipt according to the will of her late aunt Mrs. Nancy BARROW now on record in Baldwin County. Last of all I appoint my special friends Peter STUBBS, Thomas STUBBS, William SANFORD and Jacob BARROW my Executors to execute this my last will and testament, In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twentieth day of March one thousand eight hundred and twenty-seven. James BARROW (Seal) My clumsy handwriting is so well known in Baldwin County that I deem it unnecessary To call any further evidence. James BARROW. General Notes: Wife -
Nancy HARDWICK was born 6 Jan 1758, the date recorded in both the Bible of her father, William HARDWICK, and her second husband, James BARROW. Her parents were William Garland HARDWICK and Keziah Cynthia PARKER. Nancy was named for a deceased sister, Nancy, born 4 April 1755.
The Historical Collections of the Georgia Chapters Daughters of the American Revolution, Volume IV, page 12, presents a transcript of the Bible of James DANIEL said to be in possession of Mrs. D. F. Barrow, Athens. "James DANIEL was the first husband of Mrs. James Barrow, wife of James Barrow of Milledgeville, Ga...." However, some researchers say Nancy HARDWICK first married a TAYLOR and that their daughter, Nancy Hardwick TAYLOR, was born 22 Aug 1779. An undocumented World Connect source dates the marriage about 1778. The below deed of gift from Union County, South Carolina is cited as proof of the marriage. In the deed, Garland HARDWICK names "my loving Nancy Hardwick TAYLOR" and his sister "Nancy TAYLOR her mother." Nancy DANIEL witnesses the gift. This "first marriage" appears to be based on the assumption that Garland's sister Nancy is both "my sister Nancy TAYLOR" and "Nancy DANIEL" the witness, who married James DANIEL/LL of Fairfield County, South Carolina. Garland HARDWICK, brother of Nancy, wife of James DANIELL, was born 22 May 1768 and would have been 19 years old at the date of this deed of gift. If that be the case, why then does Garland turn around a year later and give Moriah to "Nancy HARDWICK," instead of to Nancy DANIEL or Nancy TAYLOR, in his 1788 deed of gift?
"Garland HARDWICK of county of Union, SC, Ninety Six dist, planter, for good will and affection to my loving Nancy Hardwick TAYLOR of same county, and the heirs of her body, in default of such heirs to fall to my sister Nancy TAYLOR her mother and the heirs of her body, one negro girl Mariah. 10 Oct 1787 Garland HARDWICK [seal]. Wit: Wm HARWICK, Nancy DANIEL [x] Molley HARDWICK [x] (UNION CO SC WILL ABSTRACTS 1898-1849, Brent H. Holcomb, Certified Genealogist, 1987 P 5 [pg 32-33])
A second abstract refers to Nancy Hardwick TAYLOR, about 9 years old, as an "infant," a term used for anyone who had not reached the age of legal maturity. "Union Co SC Misc. Records, Book 1, pp. 32-33: Dated 10 Oct 1787 - Garland Hardwick of Union Co., SC, deed of gift of 1 negro girl named Mariah to his niece, Nancy Hardwick Taylor, infant. If she died or had no issue, Mariah to go to my sister, Nancy Taylor, her mother. Witnesses: William Hardwick, Nancy (X) Daniel, Molly (X) Hardwick. No recording date." (Silas Emmet Lucas, Some South Carolina County Records, Vol. 2 (Easley SC: Southern Historical Press, Inc., 1989)
Nancy Hardwick TAYLOR apparently died about six months later because Garland records a deed giving Moriah [Mariah] to Nancy HARDWICK [DANIELL?].
PG. 156 [ORIG P 185] 26 Mar 1788. a deed of gift from "Garland HARWICK to Nancy HARDWICK for one negro girl name Moriah acknowledged in open court and ordered to be recorded.". ("UNION CO, SC, MINUTES OF THE CO COURT 1785-1799, Brent H. Holcomb, C.A.L.S., 1979.)
Nancy HARDWICK became the second wife of James DANIELL, a very successful planter in Fairfield County, South Carolina. No marriage date has been found. If Nancy DANIEL in the 10 October 1787 deed is James' wife, the marriage was before that date. An unsourced posting on the Internet provides about 1779. If so, the unidentified first husband TAYLOR died between 1779 and 1787.
Nancy was younger than three of James' six known children. James' son, Levi DANIELL, mentions "my stepmother, Nancy DANIELL" in his will dated 8 December 1800.
The 1790 U.S. census of Fairfield County, South Carolina enumerates James DANIEL's family as one male over 16 [James], one male under 16 [unknown], and a female [Nancy]. After the census, James moved his household to his plantation and bounty lands in Hancock County, Georgia, where he died in 1798.
In her husband's will, proven March 5, 1798, James DANIELL gives "unto my well beloved wife Nancy DANIELL four Negro slaves viz. Linder, Cary, Little Rachell, and Nancy, two feather beds and furniture and all my household furniture to her and her heirs forever. I also give her one note of hand of James TAYLOR of two hundred and forty one? pounds Sterling. I lend my wife twenty-one Negro slaves viz. Tom the weaver, Hecter, Biner, George, Fillaner, Sanco, Peter, Rose, Pompey, Silvy, Acre, Driver, Rachell, Muiah, Hester, Cate, Dover, Charlotte, Zouer, Daphne, Harry. I also lend her one half of the three bounties of land I now live on together with my dwelling house and plantation. Also one half of my stock of every kind. I likewise lend her one half of my tract of land on the Oconey River in Washington County during her natural life."
On 22 November 1798 at a sale of property from the estate of her deceased husband, Nancy bought a negro girl "Jinny." From the record below, Nancy immediately gave "Jinny" to James DANIELL, Infant of the State and County aforesaid [Hancock]..." but withheld transfer of ownership until after her own decease. Interpolation of family members indicates this James is most likely the four year old son of Levi DANIELL, Nancy's step-son.
Hancock County Deed Book C, 223: To all people to whom these presents shall come. I, Nancy Daniell do send Greetings knowing that the said Nancy Daniell of the State of Georgia and County of Hancock for and in consideration of the Love, good will, and affection which I have and bear towards James Daniell, Infant of the State and County aforesaid, have given and granted and by these Presents do freely give and Grant unto the said James Daniell, his heirs, Executors or administrators a Negro girl named Jinny and her increase. But the condition of the above Deed of Gift is such that it is not my intention for the said James Daniell to be possessed with the above mentioned Negro Jinny nor her increase until my Death. In witness whereof I have hereunto put my hand and seal this twenty second day of November one thousand seven hundred and ninety eight.

Sworn to before me this 28th January 1799John Wilson JP. Registered 4th February 1799. Martin Martin Clk.
An abstract of this record conflicts with the above:
"Hancock County, Georgia, Deed Book C, p. 223. I, Nancy DANIELL, of Hancock County, Georgia, for the love and good will and affection which I have for my son John DANIELL of the same place, give unto him a negro girl named "Jenny" and her increase. Wit: [illegible] and Reubin JONES. Reg: 4th February 1799."
Previously, this abstract lead to speculation that Nancy may have had a son John by James. That is no longer thought to be true. [Revised 9 January 2009]
No documentation proves Nancy HARDWICK and James DANIELL had children.
SPECULATION: Nancy HARDWICK was born 6 Jan 1758, her marriage to James may have occurred as early as 1779, ample time for her to have had "my son, John" [now apparently an abstraction error] and Betty as children. In his will, James DANIELL names his grandson, Jesse Daniell AUSTON, son of Betty AUSTON. It is the only record naming a Betty DANIELL who apparently married an AUSTON. Neither Betty nor an Elizabeth is named in transcriptions of James' Bible. Is Betty a child of James and Nancy? Nothing found to the contrary, Betty is assigned as such, primarily to present her name, her husband's surname, and her son as a separate family recorded in something other than a footnote. "Betty" may also be a nickname for James' daughter Martha DANIELL whose birth in 1762 was recorded in James' Bible; no other record of Martha has been found.. More discoveries about Nancy's marriage to James DANIELL are necessary to complete the records.
Hancock County Will Book AA page 36-39 records: January 3rd 1799. Then received of William HARDWICK an executor of James DANIELL decd, four Negroes given and twenty-five Negroes lent me by said James DANIELL decd, and stock of every kind, also beds and furniture and all household furniture received by me this 3rd day January. Nancy DANIELL. Same date: We do certify that we have in our hands the balance of the money that was left in the house and has been collected after takin (sic) out the account of Levi DANIELL . Given under our hand. Levi DANIELL Nancy DANIELL. And lastly, on 3 January 1799, Nancy DANIELL signed for receipt of "4 Negroes given me and 21 Negroes lent me by said James DANIELL dec'd.' and stock of all kinds, also beds and furniture, etc." from William HARDWICK, executor of James' estate.
Nancy acquired six Negroes as recorded in Hancock County, Georgia, Deed Book E, p. 338. "We, John COX, William BALLARD and Whitley SASSER have sold and delivered unto Nancy DANIELL of Hancock County, six negro slaves, viz., Georgia [George] and his wife, Flora, and her child Glassy, Bridget and her two sons Aaron and Moses, for the sum of seventeen hundred and fifty dollars. Wit: [illegible} WATSON and William HARDWICK. This 20th October 1801. Reg: 2nd December 1801."
Nancy Hardwick DANIELL married her second (third?) husband, James BARROW, on 7 February 1802. He had served in the North Carolina Continental Army. James and Nancy BARROW certified "that we have received of William HARDWICK surviving executor of James DANIELL decd a note of hand __ James TAYLOR willed by James DANIELL to his wife Nancy DANIELL now Nancy BARROW, dated 28 May 179_ for two hundred and forty two pounds nineteen shillings Sterling and this is his received in full as an executor of James DANIELL decd from us.", April 18th 1803.
Nancy was 44 years old when she married James BARROW. They had no children. These three excerpts are from the James Barrow Family Bible:
Nancy and James Barrow were married 7th Feb 1802.

Nancy's will may have been recorded in more than one place, but Alabama may have been inadvertantly typed in place of Georgia in another abstract posted at http://www.gulftel.com/tigerag/Html/n_38.htm giving reference to Warren County, Georgia and Baldwin County, Alabama:
BARROW, Nancy, Will: Date: 10 AUG 1812 Place: Warren County, Georgia

On 12 March 1814, James BARROW filed "a schedule of all the Negroes with their increase now in life (except one Negro man Sanco sold by James BARROW) that were lent by the last Will and Testament of James DANIELL dec'd. to his widow and relict Nancy DANIEL, afterwards Nancy BARROW, wife of James BARROW, during her natural life: Old Tom, Zouer(?), Old Rachel, Charlotte, Hester, Flander, Acre, Daphney, George, Moriah, Hictor, Biner, Dover, Caty, Peter, Pompy, Peggy, Ned, Ellinney, Billy, Moriah, Levin, Becky, Bob, Rachel, Hector, Sam, Sally, Sucky, Driver, Jupiter, Bob, Ellick, Pompy, Flander." It was witnessed by Jacob COBB and Garland HARDWICK and recorded in the Hancock County records. In January 1815, "William HARDWICK, Executor of the last will and testament of James DANIELL, dec'd, returned an account of Negroes which were lent by said will to Nancy DANIELL, wife of the said James, afterward Nancy BARROW during her natural life, together with their mansion which was ordered to be recorded." as recorded in the minutes of the Hancock County, Court of Ordinary. Half of these Negroes, lent to Nancy by James DANIELL, were bequeathed to "Patsy HANDRICK" upon Nancy's death.
(Note: Patsy HANDRICK, born about 1796, was the daughter of Dr. Robert HENDRICK of Richland County, South Carolina and Mary DANIELL, James' daughter deceased before 11 May 1797. Additional research shows that Patsy must have died young. Robert named his only surviving child, Louisa, in his Will dated 1805. She was Louisa Maria HENDRICK, born after 1800, his daughter by then wife Mary STANLEY. Louisa married Michael J. RUDULPH, Jr. in 1816. RLD)
This paragraph from the Last Will & Testament of James BARROW 20 March 1827, Baldwin County, Georgia, relates to carrying out of the will of Nancy Hardwick Daniell BARROW:
"Rachel and her family consisting of Rachel, Simon, Charles, Dinah, Isaac, Saressy, Nancy, Josiah and Sam, I wish delivered to Mrs. Patsy LEWIS as soon as my Executors can properly divest my business and get her receipt according to the will of her late aunt Mrs. Nancy BARROW now on record in Baldwin County."
A CONFLICT IN NANCY's IDENTITY AND THE POSSIBILITY OF A DANIELL/L-SANKEY-EILAND CONNECTION:
An Ann SANKEY is said to have married a James DANIEL circa 1750 in North Carolina. Their daughter, Ann Sankey DANIEL, b. 1753, is said to have married Absolom EILAND in 1775 in Fairfield County, S. C., or Johnson or Currituck County, N. C. In 1787, "Absolom EILAND and wife Ann" sell 287 acres in Greene Co., GA (RW land bounty) to "James DANIELL of Fairfield County, South Carolina." witnessed by Levi DANIELL, James' son. In 1791, Levi Daniel EILAND was born to Absolom and Ann; Eiland family narratives say he was named for her favorite brother. (Note: If the same Levi DANIELL, s/o James of Fairfield, South Carolina, he is her youngest brother. RLD) Is this Ann DANIEL, born 1753, a daughter of James DANIELL and an Ann SANKEY, of Fairfield County?
Some EILAND family researchers contend that the Ann SANKEY above is Nancy DANIELL, widow of James DANIELL of Hancock County, Georgia, who married second James BARROW, and died in Baldwin County, Georgia on 18 January 1814. A body of evidence in legal records proves that Nancy HARDWICK, born 6 January 1758, was the second wife and widow of James DANIELL of Hancock County. Nancy is not the mother of Ann DANIEL, born 1753. She was five years younger than Ann and younger than three of James' known children and too young to have been the mother of any born before 1773. Levi DANIELL in his Will of 1800 referred to her as "my step-mother, Nancy Daniell."
Eiland researcher Jere Fletcher provided four abstracts from the Georgia Journal, said to be from the work of Cecil Little (deceased), to support the assignment of Nancy SANKEY as James DANIELL's widow and James BARROW's wife. Verification of the abstracts in the referenced source showed the name SANKEY was NOT in the original. It appears that a well-intentioned researcher who confused the two James DANIEL families who lived in proximity to each other added the SANKEY name to reference material to present a maiden name for her in support of his belief. The altered abstracts are the likely to source of the misidentification of Nancy HARDWICK as Nancy Ann SANKEY. Comparisons of these abstracts are below:

Note: An additional abstract in follow up concerning the estate of John T. SANKEY: February 7, 1816 "By order of the...Court of Ordinary of Greene County, will be sold on the first Tuesday in March next at the town of Greensborough, one tract of land containing 700 acres, lying on the road leading from Greensbrough to Washington...being part of the real estate of John T. SANKEY, deceased...(Signed) James DANIEL, Adm'r., Drury TOWNS, Adm'r. in right of his wife." Recall that James DANIELL died before 5 March 1798 and his widow, Nancy BARROW, died 18 Jan 1814. This James and Nancy were alive in 1816.

4. ERROR. [Note inclusion of the name "Sankey"]: Sept. 20, 1815: NOTICE: "Whereas James DANIEL of Hancock County, did by his Last Will lend to his Wife, Nancy Sankey DANIEL, who afterwards became my Wife, that during her life certain property..my said wife died the 18th of Jan. 1814, on which day my claim to her property expired. The Executor of James DANIEL, deceased..received the aforesaid property, except a herd of goats.. I have tolerated them and cared for them with usual care , but will consider them under my care only ten days from this notice at which time I will drive them entirely from my plantation. Signed Sept. 11, 1815: Signed: James BARROW, Esq."
CORRECT from the original: September 20, 1815 "Notice.--Whereas James DANIEL of Hancock County, did by his last will...lend to his wife, Nancy DANIEL, (who afterwards became my wife) during her life certain property...my said wife died the 18th of January 1814, on which day my claim expired...The executor of James DANIEL, deceased...received the aforesaid property, except a stock of goats...I have taken my usual care of the said Goats, but will consider them under my care only ten days after this notice. I will then drive them entirely from my plantation...Given under my hand this 11th day of September, 1815. (Signed) James BARROW"
NOTE: None of the above precludes the possibility of claims that Ann DANIEL, b. 1753, who married Absolom EILAND in 1775 in Fairfield County, South Carolina (per citation of DAR #232154), was a daughter of James DANIELL of Fairfield County, SC or that James may have married an Ann SANKEY who may have been her mother; however, no documentation for those assignments has surfaced. No Ann Nancy SANKEY of age to be James wife before 1753 has been found. Circumstantial evidence that Ann, wife of Absolom, may have been James' daughter still exists in: James' claim of a wife and two children in his 1754 petition for land in South Carolina; in Absolom EILAND's presence in South Carolina from 1754, Berkeley County, to at least 1779, Orangeburg County; in the sale of Absolom and Ann's land in Greene County, Georgia to James DANIELL in 1787, witnessed by James' son Levi; and in the naming of Levi Daniel EILAND, born about 1791 to Absolom and Ann probably in Greene County, that part which later became Hancock County. However, if Ann DANIEL is the daughter of our James DANIELL, her mother died sometime before his remarriage to Nancy HARDWICK, between 1779 and 1787.

Although Jesse's father and mother used the DANIELL surname, Jesse's family became DANIEL.
The DANIELL family headstones in Bleckley County reveal a most interesting evolution of the family surname within a single generation. Of the three sons of Eliajah and Sarah Daniell, two are buried near Elijah Leroy DANIELL, Sr., in the Evergreen Baptist Church Cemetery, Elijah, Jr. as DANIELL, William Anderson as DANIELS, and the third is buried in the Antioch United Methodist Cemetery, Jesse Damascus as DANIEL.

A.S Bass
postmaster, depot agent and storekeeper, Devereaux, Hancock Co., Ga, a station on the Macon and Augusta railway, in the western part of the county. Mr. Bass comes from good old Virginia stock, from which state his grandfather, Edmund Bass, emigrated when in his teens. Mr. Bass' father married a Miss Ingram, and settled in the western part of the county, where he reared family of four sons and five daughters: Milton, married Ann Culver, a sister of Hardy C., whose family is mentioned elsewhere, and became the father of the following children: Ann E., Mrs. Wm. Coleman, Deveareaux; W. H., Macon; A. S., the subject of this sketch; Carrie G, widow of J. W. Mote, Devereaux; George E., private Company K, Fifteenth Georgia regiment, wounded and captured at Gettysburg, died in a Federal prison; Wesley A., planter near Devereaux; Hardy W., Baldwin county; Mary J., deceased; Sallie E.; Mrs. Wm. Brown, Devereaux; Mattie L., Mrs. F. A. Hall, Milledgeville. Mrs. Bass died in 1869. She was a woman of superior qualities and is remembered by her children as a mother faithful and true to their best interests. The father lived till 1883. He early mastered the art of successfully tilling his native heath, and was regarded as an authority on all questions pertaining to agriculture. he accumulated a good estate, and in his public and private benefactions was liberal and just. He was a member and active worker in the Methodist church, and as such is remembered as being of peculiar and wonderful power in prayer. Although not an educated man, when "talking to the Lord" he had a command of language seldom surpassed. "Syd" Bass, as he is familiarly known, came to manhood on the wave that ushered in the civil war, having been born June 22, 1841. he enlisted as a private in Company K, Fifteenth Georgia regiment, in 1861. He participated in some of the hardest fought battles of the war, notably the seven days' fight around Richmond, Fredericksburg, Sharpsburg, Gettysburg, Chancellorsville and Second Manassas, and wears the marks of two Yankee bullets, having been wounded in the shoulder at Sharpsburg, and in the thigh at Second Manassas. Witnessing the surrender of his beloved chieftain at Appomattox, he returned home, gladly laying down the implements of war to engage in the industries of peace. The business of Mr. Bass since the war has been such as to give him a large acquaintance in the county, among whom he is regarded as a faithful and conscientious official. He is a democrat, is a Mason and belongs to the Methodist church. The marriage of Mr. Bass was consummated with Miss Ella C. Simmons in 1872, who is the mother of three children: George E., died in infancy; Anna le Gay and Ora E., young ladies at home. [Memoirs of Georgia, Volume 1, Historical Society of Georgia, 1895]

Edmund died 1 March 1843 in Hancock County, Georgia.
General Notes: Wife -
Elizabeth H. INGRAM " was born Abt. 1784 in Virginia. She married Edmund Sidney BASS in Virginia before 1807, the year their son James A. was born. They migrated to Hancock County, Georgia between 1807 and 1812, the year their son John Ingram was born.
When Elizabeth, the wife of Edmund S. BASS died is uncertain. One website says she died 06 May 1848 in Hancock Co. Georgia, but censuses indicate she may have died after 1860, probably in Smith County, Texas. The question appears to be what is the relationship of the two Elizabeth BASS to each other and the family of Edmund S. BASS.
Interpreting the 1830 census, Edmund S. and Elizabeth BASS had 6 children, three boys and 3 three girls. Only two have been identified. James A., born 1807, and John Ingram, born about 1812.
There are two Elizabeth BASS in the 1830 census of Hancock County, Georgia, both age 40-50, one apparently a widow, the other enumerated in the household of Edmond S. BASS

"1st Sgt 11th TX Inf CSA
Proud Confederate Soldier"
General Notes: Wife -
Mary [Jane] BUTTS, age 12, is listed in the home of George Washington BUTTS and his second wife, Elizabeth Simmons BUTTS, in the 1850 census of Hancock County, Georgia. In his writings, Arthur Irwin BUTTS, Sr, identifies her as Mary Golden BUTTS, the adopted daughter of George Washington BUTTS, and includes this: "Mary Jane our adopted daughter born Jun. 15, 1838." seemingly a quote from the family Bible.
A "Post-em" by Charles Butts, 2004-06-14, millberry@aol.com, (invalid address in 08/2009) on the Rootsweb World Connect page for Mary Golden BUTTS states:
"George Washington BUTTS of Hancock Co., GA who later moved to Rusk Co., TX adopted a child he called W.J.[sic, M. J. RLD]. She married a Mr. BASS and they had 6 sons. She called herself Mary Golden BUTTS." [http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:1605375&id=I72378329]
Mary Golden BUTTS married John Benjamin BASS before the 1860 census when they are listed in the Smith County, Texas census. Smith County borders Rusk County.
In 1860 Mary BASS is age 20, 1870, age 31, and 1880 age 41 named as Mary J. BASS.
Find A Grave Memorial# 41918717 lists Mary Golden Butts BASS buried in Mount Sylvan Cemetery, Gregg County, Texas. No dates of birth or death. Her husband and some of her family are also buried there.
The death certificate, filed 22 February 1936 of Mary's son Henry F. BASS of Route 3, Kilgore, Smith County, Texas lists his parents as "B. BASS" and "Mary Jane GOLDMAN." Informant for the certificate infomation was R. S.[?] BASS of Kilgore Texas. ["Texas, Deaths, 1890-1976," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JXN1-QYS : accessed 10 July 2012), B. Bass in entry for Henry F. Bass, 1936.] [Note: The familysearch.org transcription erroneously lists "Mary Jones Goldman" but the certificate is plainly "Mary Jane Goldman." RLD]

William Clarence HALBERT is a son of William Cottingham HALBERT Lavina Ann HALBERT. His biography is printed in The Leaders and Representative Men in Commerce, Industry and Modern Activities by E. Polk Johnson, Volume II, Illustrated, Publisher: The Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago - New York 1912, pages 814 to 817:
JUDGE WILLIAM C. HALBERT. who is the present incumbent of the office of judge of the circuit court of the Twentieth Kentucky (District, is a lawyer of prominence and influence in Lewis county, Kentucky. He was born on a farm fourteen miles west of Vanceburg on the 25th of February, 1856, hut his parents removing to Vanceburg six weeks after his birth he has since that time made his home in Vanceburg, and has seen it grow from a hamlet of twelve houses to its present size and importance. In this growth judge HALBERT has taken and contributed an active and generous part, and, like his father, has ever been one of the most public spirited and important factors in the growth of his native city.
Judge HALBERT is a son of William C. HALBERT and Lavina A. HALBERT, who were cousins. They were both born and reared in Lewis county, Kentucky, their parents on each side having been born in Bourbon county, this state, and their parents on each side having come from Culpeper county, Virginia, in the early settlement of Kentucky to the central part of the present state of Kentucky. Isaac HALBERT, the great-grandfather of Judge HALBERT, was a native of Scotland, born not far from the English border or boundary line, from whence he came to Virginia prior to the Revolutionary war, settling first near Alexandria in Fairfax county, where he married Elizabeth O'Daniel, and then moved to Culpeper county in that state, where he continued to reside until he removed to Kentucky in March, 1785. He served as a private soldier from 1785, as stated, Isaac HALBERT emigrated to Kentucky, moving his family and household goods by land from Culpeper county up the waters of the Potomac to Pittsburg, and then by what was known as a family or house boat he made his slow journey to what was then called Limestone, now Maysville, where he landed and took the old Buffalo trail or road to Boonesborough station, or fort, where he lived for the next three years, and in which his eldest daughter, Catharine, and perhaps one of his sons, was born in May, 1787. In April, 1785, Isaac HALBERT located and surveyed various tracts of land, by virtue of treasury warrants obtained by him from the state of Virginia, aggregating about three thousand acres. These lands were situated in the vicinity of the station where he then lived and are now in Bourbon, Clark and Jessamine counties, this state, but then in Fayette county, Virginia. Daniel Boone, then deputy surveyor of Fayette county, Virginia, surveyed one of these tracts of land for him, and his survey and plat are now on file in the records of the land office at Frankfort, Kentucky. He was a friend of Boone and Simon Kenton, and bore his part in the struggle to wrest the new country of his adoption from the Indians and to make it a state. In 1799 he purchased four thousand nine hundred acres of land on Salt Lick creek, in what is now Lewis county, but was then Mason county in this state. and in the winter of 1800 lie erected a dwelling house on this land at the forks of Salt Lick creek, seven miles west of Vanceburg, and in the spring of 1801 he moved into this house, which was the third house built in what is now Lewis county. He continued to reside on this land until his death, in 1825, and he is buried in sight of his home where he died. He was a member of the first petit jury that was ever impaneled in the Lewis circuit court, in July, 1807. His wife was born in Virginia, of Irish stock on both sides, and she survived her husband twenty-two years, dying in 1847, in her eighty-seventh year. Isaac and Elizabeth HALBERT became the parents of nine sons and three daughters, all of whom reached maturity, and six of their sons served as volunteer soldiers in the war of 1812 in various Kentucky regiments; three of them were at the battle of the Thames, and one served as a marine on board of Perry's fleet in the memorable battle of Lake Erie. Stephen HALBERT, grand father of Judge HALBERT, was one of the sons who responded promptly to the call of Governor Shelby and marched with him to the Thames and helped to end the war with honor and victory in that section of the Northwest Territory. Another of their sons became a member of the colony that settled in Texas in 1828, and received a league of land on the Brazos river from the Spanish government for settling on it. He afterward served in the war between Mexico and Texas, and subsequently served as circuit judge in his adopted state.
Stephen HALBERT, the paternal grandfather of Judge HALBERT, was born in Bourbon county, Kentucky, in March, 1793, and came with his parents to Lewis county in the spring of 1801. He married Mary Cottingham in that county in April, 1813, who died in 1829, at the early age of thirty-two. She was born also in Bourbon county, the daughter of William Cottingham and his wife, Mary Johnson, who emigrated from Snow Hill, Worcester county, Maryland, and settled in Bourbon county in an early day. -rents did, and his wife came from England, or was of English descent. To Stephen HALBERT and his wife, Mary Cottingham, were born eight children, five boys and three girls, and of this number William C. HALBERT, father of the judge, was the second in order of birth. He was born in Lewis county on February 20, 1817, and was there reared to maturity on a farm. When barely of age he served as deputy sheriff of St. Francis county, Arkansas, for three years. Resigning this position on account of ill health he returned to Kentucky, and shortly after his return he was appointed acting sheriff of Lewis county, all the county officers being then appointed and not elected, and he continued to discharge the duties of sheriff, and without any deputy, for six years to the entire satisfaction of the court and the people. It is said that he never returned a warrant not executed if the person named in the warrant was in Lewis county:, that he never summoned any one to help him arrest a person for whom he had a warrant, and that he never carried a pistol while acting as sheriff; and that he promptly collected and accounted for all public taxes and moneys that came or should have come to his hands as collector.
He read law and was admitted to the bar in 1856, and then removed from his farm to Vanceburg where he made his home and engaged in the active practice of his profession until his death, in September, 1877. He was elected and served as county attorney of Lewis county in 1862, and again in 1870, and served eight years in all. He was nominated in 1852 for state senator by the Wig party from the Fleming and Lewis district, but declined the nomination because of ill health. In 1865 he was nominated by the Democratic party for state senator from the Mason and Lewis district and was elected and served four years. He declined a renomination from that party in 1869, on account of ill health and the demands of his private business. He was the leader of the Wig party in Lewis county until the demise of the party. He then became a member of the Democratic party and continued the leader of it in Lewis county until his decease. He had a talent for liking politics and could lead and organize his party as but few men could in his day or since then in Lewis county. He never, drank, used , tobacco or gambled, was a strict member and elder in his church and one of his diversion was playing politics; but never sought office for himself and when made a race at all he was drafted to help out his party and head a forlorn hope, he having always belonged to the minority party in Lewis county. He was never defeated when he did run for office.
He was a very successful lawyer and enjoyed a wide reputation and large practice in Lewis county, where he was on one side of every important case tried in that county for years prior to his death. He procured the passage of the law that secured the removal of the county seat from Clarksburg to Vanceburg, and to his efforts almost alone does Vanceburg now enjoy the honor of being the county seat. He was the father of the turnpike road system and the bridge law of Lewis county, under which more than one hundred miles of turnpike were built and many bridges erected over all the main streams in the county. He gave the site for the court house and jail to the county. He also gave the site for the Christian church, of which he was an elder, in Vanceburg. He was a charter member of Polar Star Lodge, No. 363, F. & A. M., and of Burns Chapter, No. 74, of Vanceburg. He built the flouring mill in Vanceburg and many of the dwelling houses therein, and took an active and intelligent interest in building up the town, of which at one time he owned practically half the land in it.
Judge William C. HALBERT was the fifth in order of birth in a family of nine children, and he was six weeks old at the time his parents settled in Vanceburg in April, 8~6. He attended the public schools of Vanceburg and for two years attended the National Normal School at Lebanon, Ohio. When seventeen years of age he began reading law under his father and in May, 1874, when slightly over eighteen years of age, was admitted to the bar. In the fall of 1874 he returned to school at Lebanon. Ohio, and remained there until June, 1875, when he returned home and began the active practice of his profession as a partner of his father, whom he continued to practice until the death of his father in September, 1877. For three terms he served as city, attorney of Vanceburg, and in .August, 189o, was elected county attorney of Lewis county; was reelected in November, 1894, and again in November, 1897, serving until January, 1901. In November, 1905, he was elected to the Legislature and served two years as a member from Lewis county. He was a member of the committees on judiciary, criminal law and amendments to the constitution while in the Legislature, and took an active part in the deliberations of that body while one of its members. He declined to accept a renomination for the Legislature on account of the demands of his law business. In November, 1909, he was nominated and elected without opposition as circuit judge of the Twentieth, judicial district for a term of six years and is now discharging the duties of that office. In June, 1910, he was commissioned by the Governor as special judge for the state at large, under an act of the Legislature passed in March, 1910, and held by the Court of Appeals as constitutional.
In politics Judge HALBERT is a Republican, of which party he has been one of the most active and faithful of its workers in Lewis county, and on the stump and at the polls has fought its battles earnestly and with great zeal, fidelity and ability; but on the bench he has endeavored to forget politics and mete out the law to all regardless of politics. He has so far succeeded in this effort that he decided against the candidates of his party in election contests involving the offices of county judge and sheriff in Boyd county, in which much feeling was involved. His decisions in these cases were subsequently approved by the Court of Appeals. It can be truthfully said of Judge HALBERT that he is well equipped both by nature and legal training for the position he now holds, and that he has given very general satisfaction both in his own district and as special judge when called to act outside of his district. He is strictly fair, courteous to and patient with the humblest member of the bar, and has untiring industry and, energy to clear up the dockets and congested litigation in his district.
Judge HALBERT is a member of the Masonic order, holding membership in Polar Star Lodge, No. 363, F. & A. M.; Burns Chapter, No. 74, Royal Arch Masons; and Maysville Commandery, No. 10, Knights Templars. He is also a member of the Junior Order United American Mechanics of Vanceburg.
In April, 1887, Judge HALBERT was united in marriage to Miss Fannie Bate, who was born in Newport, Campbell county, Kentucky, and who was a daughter of Samuel Bate, a successful wholesale merchant in Cincinnati during and prior to the Civil war. He was born in Cheshire county, England, in 1818, and emigrated to this country in 1839, settling in Cincinnati, where he married a descendant of one of the first settlers of that city, and for whom one of the streets there is now named. To this union five children were born, of whom four are now living, whose names are: William C. Jr., John Bate, Harlan R. and Frances A., the eldest being twenty and the youngest nine. Judge HALBERT and his wife are members of the Christian church in Vanceburg, to which his grandparents adhered under the preaching of Alexander Campbell, the founder of that church.
William Clarence HALBERT (1856-1931)
William Clarence HALBERT, sixth child of William Cottingham HALBERT and Lavina Ann HALBERT was born on his father's farm at Doyle's Bottom, West of Concord, Lewis County, Kentucky, on 25 February 1856. A few months after his birth his father moved to Vanceburg, where he built a comfortable house and opened up a law office. The son attended the local schools and than the National Normal School, Lebanon, Ohio. He read law under his father and was admitted to the bar, May 1874, when just past 18. That fall he returned to school at Lebanon. On finishing he practiced law with his father and Judge Samuel J. PUGH, the firm being known as HALBERT, PUGH and HALBERT. It was dissolved on the death of the senior member in 1877 (William Cottingham HALBERT). HALBERT, Jr. was three times elected City Attorney. In 1881 a large tract of land on Indian, a branch of Kinniconick Creek, part of the of the elder HALBERT, was being invaded by squatters who were cutting timber and otherwise damaging the property. It was decided to survey it but the survey party, consisting of young HALBERT, his uncle, George T. HALBERT, the county surveyor, Alfred Harrison and others were ambushed and fired upon. The older members decided that the neighborhood was unhealthy and retired to town, but young HALBERT did some scouting of his own, located his opponents and put them to flight with his pistol. He reorganized the survey party and completed the survey, afterwards having dinner with his principal opponent. In 1890 he was elected County Attorney and reelected in 1894 and 1898, serving three full terms. In the fall of 1899, at the request of Governor Taylor, HALBERT and some of friends raised a company of militia, in which he was commissioned First Lieutenant. The election troubles were settled without civil war and the company saw no active service. In 1905, he was elected Representative from Lewis County, on the Republican ticket. The Democratic speaker appointed him to the Judiciary Committee and he was honored by other important distinctions. In 1909 he was elected Circuit Judge of the 26th Judicial District (Lewis, Greenup, and Boyd Counties), without opposition. In 1912 he was elected one of two delegates from the Ninth Congressional District to the Republican National Convention in Chicago, which renominated President Taft.
He was reelected Circuit Judge in 1916, 1921, and 1927 and held the office continuously up to his death. He was partisan in politics and an active worker for the Republican Party up to his election as Judge, but believing that a Judge should refrain from such things he avoided partisan activities afterward. Generally in his campaigns he had little opposition and was given the endorsement of the county Bar Association of his district. His record as a judge was one of the best in the state with very few reversals by the Court of Appeals. During the approximately ten years before his election as judge he had a very large law practice and was in every important case tried during that period in the Lewis County Circuit Court. He was employed by Carter and Lewis Counties to contest Act of the General Assembly of 1904 creating the County of Backham out of their territory. The Carter Circuit Court held the Act valid but HALBERT's argument before the Court of Appeals reversed the judgment and the Act was declared unconstitutional. HALBERT was one of four attorneys selected to contest the Redistricting Act of 1906. He argued the case orally before the full bench of the Court of Appeals which held the Act unconstitutional.
He was one of the organizers and a director of the Citizens Bank of Vanceburg and a director of the Lewis County Herald from its organization on 3 March 1924 until his death. He was a member of the Polar Star Lodge, No. 363, F.&.A.M., Burns Chapter No. 74, Maysville Commandery No. 10 Knights Templar and Vanceburg Council No. 2, Jr. O.V.A.M. he was a member of the Christian Church, contributed substantially to the construction of the church building at Vanceburg and supported it afterward.
He married Fanny Blanch Bate, born 17 June 1861, daughter of Samuel Bate, of Pine Hill, Lewis County (formally of Newport, Kentucky until his retirement from business about 1865). From this five children were born: William Cecil, 1889-1890; William Carter , 1891-1958; John Bate, 1893-1932; Harlan Russell, 1896-1970; Frances Aileen, 1901-1996. Judge HALBERT died at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati, Ohio, on 22 November 1931. His widow survived him until 1 January 1940, dying at Kings Daughters Hospital, Ashland, Kentucky.
The following is the Memorial Resolution of the Greenup County Bar Association on death of Judge William C. HALBERT, November 22, 1931:
"IF THE COURT PLEASE:
As Chairman of the Committee on Resolutions appointed by the President of the Greenup County Bar Association and confirmed by your honor, as presiding Judge or the Greenup Circuit Court, we respectfully offer the following memorial resolution:
The death on November 22nd, 1931 of William Clarence HALBERT, Judge of the Twentieth Judicial District of the Commonwealth of the Kentucky, brought to a end a life crowded with public service.
Twenty-two years presiding Judge of this Circuit Court, a member of two General Assemblies of this state, having served as County Attorney of Lewis County for eleven years; in all capacities he exhibited the same untiring application, sensitiveness of conscience and wholehearted devotion to the public weal.
As a judge his opinions were the result of careful consideration, were characterized by good sense and ripe judgment, and were couched in graceful prose of conspicuous clarity.
Genial, companionable and cultured, he endeared himself to all with whom he came in contact.
We record our admiration for the man of culture and character; our obligation to an able and devoted judge; our regret at his untimely passing and our wholehearted sympathy to the bereaved members of his family.
But far transcending all this and these, comes our mind the stately presence, the whimsical smile, the gently modulated voice and kindly, gentle presence of courtly gentleman, who, having finished the task in hand, after nearly seventy-six years of usefulness, bowed head and entered upon that sleep that knows no earthly awakening.
Respectfully offered,
A. S. Cooper
Chairman
It is moved and seconded that this resolution be adopted by the Greenup County Bar Association and spread at large upon the Minutes of the Association, and recorded in the Order Book of the Greenup Circuit Court and a copy sent to Mrs. William Clarence HALBERT, his widow, at Vanceburg, Kentucky, and a copy be published in the Lewis County Herald, the Ashland Daily Independent, and the Greenup Republican, and copies be offered to the Lewis Circuit Court and the Boyd Circuit Court to be recorded upon their respective order books.

Artemus Briggs WATSON was born 16 Dec 1846, son of James Daniel WATSON and Angelina WANNAMAKER.

Amanda BATES is recorded as Artemas's second wife, likely married soon after Angelina's death in April 1883. If Artemas and Amanda had children, they are not recorded in the census of 1900 and may have died young. The 1910 census shows Artemus and Amelia W. married for 25 years which would mean married about 1885. If true, then Amanda is presumed to have died by 1885, less than 2 years after her marriage to Artemus, possibly a result of childbirth.
Amelia WIGHTMAN is Artemas' wife in the 1900 census, married about 1885, their first child recorded as son "Whitman" born in October 1892. 1900 U.S. Census, South Carolina, Marion County, Reese, 1 June 1900; Series: T623 Roll: 1535 Page: 316: 32 33 WATSON A. She is most likely his third wife and has had four children, three living. There is a 15 year gap in the ages of Artemus' children by his first wife, from the last child in the censuses born 1877, and this wife, first known child born in 1892.
1910 U.S. Census, South Carolina, Bamberg County, Three Mile Twp, 15 Apr 1910; Series: T624 Roll: 1448 Page: 72: Main Street -- 17 18 WATSON, A. Amelia is shown as having four children, three living. It is not known if the deceased child was born before Wightman in 1892 or after Daisy in 1897. 1786
General Notes: Wife -
Amanda BATES was Artemas Briggs WATSON's second wife, married sometime after April 1883 when Angeline Wannamaker WATSON died. Artemas and Amanda may not have had children, or they may have died before the 1900 census. Amanda seems to have died before 1885 when it is estimated that Artemas married Amelia WIGHTMAN, their son "Whitman" named in the 1900 census, was born October 1892, and the 1910 census indicates Artemas and Amelia have been married for 25 years. There is about a 15 year gap in Artemas' children from the last known born by his first wife,Angeline, to the first born by Amelia.
