The family burying ground of John COCKEY, Jr., is situated on the old tavern property of Stephen COCKEY, on the east side of the Falls road where it crosses Green Spring valley, to the right of the field road beyond the orchard. Inscriptions found here are: ...
To the left of the field road beyond the orchard we find:
Fell asleep in Jesus October 4th, 1864 Julia Ann Beloved wife of Thomas Armacost, I the 57th year of her age.
None know her but to love her
None named her but to praise
Farewell Mother, we thy loss deplore
The time was short the pain was great thou bore
But Jesus sent his Angels from the skies
A bore thy spirit up where pleasure never dies."

General Notes: Husband -

Elijah L. DANIELL, age 5, son of Robert Tucker DANIELL and Mary J. KINNEY, is named in the 1860 census of Wilkinson County, Georgia. In 1870, Elijah is named as Eliza, 15, a daughter of Robert and Mary, still in Wilkinson County, Georgia.

Elijah first married Betty, maiden name unknown, before 1879. Their daughter, Lizzie, was born in May 1880. There is a marriage record for a "DANIEL ELIJAH [to] STINSON JENNIE 5 May 1872 " in Troup County, Georgia.

1880 U.S. Census, Georgia, Pulaski County, Hawkinsville; Series: T9 Roll: 162 Page 301: Elijah DANIEL Self M Male W 26 GA Farm Laborer GA GA; Betty DANIEL Other M Female W 23 GA Keeping House GA GA; Lizzie DANIEL Dau S Female W 1M GA GA GA. (Family History Library Film 1254162 NA Film Number T9-0162 Page Number 301B) From this census, it is apparent that Elijah first married Betty, maiden name unknown, before 1880. Betty apparently died soon after Lizzie was born. This census indicated she was disabled, "Child bed" was her described condition.

Elijah married second Sarah "Sallie" Leone ARMSTRONG on 9 January 1884. The death certificate of their daughter Mary lists her mother as Sallie Louisa ARMSTRONG.

Elijha and Sarah's family, minus three children who died young, is listed in the 1900 U.S. Census, Georgia, Pulaski County, Walker; Series: T623 Roll: 217 Page: 124: 393 403 DANIELL Elijah L Head W M Jan 1855 45 M 16 GA GA GA Overseer; -- Sarah L. Wife W F 1872 28 M 16 7 4 GA NC GA; -- Elijah L. Jr. Son W M --- 1885 15 S GA GA GA At school; -- William A. Son W M --- 1888 12 S GA GA GA At school; -- Jesse D. Son W M --- 1892 8 S GA GA GA At school; -- Mary Dau W F 1894 6 S GA GA GA; -- Robert T. Father W M Jan 1823 77 Wd GA GA GA. The second "L" in Elijah's surname appears to be written over an "S", perhaps an insistence on the spelling "DANIELL". Heritage Quest lists Elijah L. DANIELS in the 1900 census index.

Sarah and Elijah DANIELL both died in September 1906, Sarah on the 18th and Elijah before the end of the month. On 1 October 1906, Sarah's brother, Hugh ARMSTRONG, was appointed guardian of their three youngest children.

Elijah and Sarah are buried in the Evergreen Baptist Church Cemetery in Bleckley County, Georgia. His headstone provides only his name, "ELIJHA L. DANIELL SR." A picture of his headstone is on Find A Grave Memorial# 31593488 created by Marsha Allen Durrance on Nov 21, 2008.

The DANIELL family headstones in Bleckley County reveal a most interesting evolution of the surname DANIELL within a single generation, two sons are buried near Elijah Leroy DANIELL, Sr., in the Evergreen Baptist Church Cemetery, Elijah, Jr. as DANIELL and William Anderson as DANIELS, and a third son, Jesse D. as DANIEL, buried in the Antioch United Methodist Cemetery.

General Notes: Wife -

Sarah Leone ARMSTRONG was born 24 December 1867, a daughter of Isham Hand ARMSTRONG and Mary Jane WOODSON. She married Elijah Leroy DANIELL. The death certificate of their daughter Mary lists her mother as "Sallie Louisa ARMSTRONG."

The 1900 U.S. Census lists "-- Sarah L. Wife W F 1872 28 M 16 7 4 GA NC GA" indicates that Sarah was married at age 12 and had 2 children before age 16, possibly a third. Exceptionally questionable. The 1880 census of Pulaski County, Georgia, lists the family of Isham ARMSTRONG including son, Hugh, 18, and daughter, Sallie (Sarah), 14, born circa 1866, not 1872, showing Sallie was about 18 when she married Elijha.

Sarah and Elijah DANIELL both died in September 1906. In 1910, their three youngest children are living in the home of their uncle and guardian, Hugh F. ARMSTRONG, in Pulaski County.

Sarah Armstrong DANIEL is buried in the Evergreen Baptist Church Cemetery in Bleckley County, Georgia. A small headstone provides only her name, "SALLIE A. DANIELL". Note that her nickname "Sallie", not her given name of Sarah was used on the stone; the "A." is for her maiden surname Armstrong.

"James Barrs was also in the 1840 Twiggs County GA census. In his household was 1 male under 5 years of age, 1 male between the ages of 10 and 15, 1 male between the ages of 15 and 20, (John born 1823, George Grandberry born 1825 and James Barrs, Jr.) and 1 male between the ages of 40 and 50. He also had in his household 1 female between the ages of 30 and 40. He also had in his household 57 slaves. We believe these included his brother Arthur Barrs' former slaves, which were transferred just before Arthur Barrs' death in 1843." Curtis was a West Texas guy. He was born in Rotan, Texas. He lived his early life there and in Colorado City, Texas. He attended Colorado City schools. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy within months after high school from Sweetwater, Texas. He was trained in electronics, but then applied for and was accepted as a Navy Seal. He did 2 tours in Vietnam, the first in 1967-68 with Seal Team 7 and then he returned in 1969 with Seal Team 2 and was killed on a mission on December 27, 1969. According to his Seal Team buddies, he would go any where at any time and perform any job. He is reported to have completed some 150 Seal missions before his death. He was also reported to be deadly with the Stoner Machine gun. He was awarded the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, along with many awards for valor. He is remembered by the Permian Basin Vietnam Memorial, http://www.veteransmemorial.us,in Midland, Texas.
22 Sep 2006
When the Permian Basin Vietnam Veteran's Memorial was dedicated in 1994, Curtis was listed with Mitchell County, Texas and his name appears that way at the Memorial Site near the Midland International Airport. That is in error. He was from Nolan County, Texas. His family moved to Sweetwater when he was seven. He attended Sweetwater High School his sophomore year and then Tye High School in Tye, Texas, his junior year. He dropped out before his senior year and joined the Navy from Sweetwater.
He was known as Butch to his family and friends. Butch is a first cousin to Johnnye Ashton Blakeley, the widow of Major Roy J. Blakeley, U.S. Air Force, of Rotan who also perished in Vietnam.
