Curtis was a West Texas guy. He was born in Rotan, Texas. He lived his early life there and in Colorado City, Texas. He attended Colorado City schools. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy within months after high school from Sweetwater, Texas. He was trained in electronics, but then applied for and was accepted as a Navy Seal. He did 2 tours in Vietnam, the first in 1967-68 with Seal Team 7 and then he returned in 1969 with Seal Team 2 and was killed on a mission on December 27, 1969. According to his Seal Team buddies, he would go any where at any time and perform any job. He is reported to have completed some 150 Seal missions before his death. He was also reported to be deadly with the Stoner Machine gun. He was awarded the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, along with many awards for valor. He is remembered by the Permian Basin Vietnam Memorial, http://www.veteransmemorial.us,in Midland, Texas.
22 Sep 2006
When the Permian Basin Vietnam Veteran's Memorial was dedicated in 1994, Curtis was listed with Mitchell County, Texas and his name appears that way at the Memorial Site near the Midland International Airport. That is in error. He was from Nolan County, Texas. His family moved to Sweetwater when he was seven. He attended Sweetwater High School his sophomore year and then Tye High School in Tye, Texas, his junior year. He dropped out before his senior year and joined the Navy from Sweetwater.
He was known as Butch to his family and friends. Butch is a first cousin to Johnnye Ashton Blakeley, the widow of Major Roy J. Blakeley, U.S. Air Force, of Rotan who also perished in Vietnam.

General Notes: Husband - Major Roy James BLAKELEY, USAF, Vietnam

Roy James BLAKENEY's birth in Winkler County, Texas is recorded as "BLAKELEY ROY JAMES 12-10-1928 m WINKLER VIOLET MAE VICKREY JAMES LEWIS BLAKELEY" [http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txwinkle/1928b.htm]

United States Air Force
10 December 1928 - 22 July 1965

12 Oct 2004
Roy "Blake" Blakeley was born in Wink, Texas and the family moved to Rotan, Texas, a community about 35 miles north of Sweetwater, Texas. He graduated from high school there and then attended and graduated from the University of Arkansas.
Growing up he always wanted to be a pilot. He was a devoted husband and father, he loved boating, camping and fishing. He loved flying and flew every chance he could get. He was tagged by his squadron mates as being a "time hog". He seldom turned down an opportunity to fly. As a gag gift, some of the pilots in his squadron made a large pencil out of a broomstick by cutting it about 12" long, pained it and sharpened it to look like a pencil and labeled it "Time Hog" for his long flying hours.
He was killed attempting to land his disabled F-104 at Chu Lai Air Field during an aerial operation on July 22, 1965. He is remembered on the Permian Basin Vietnam Veterans' Memorial.
27 Jul 2006
I was on the runway at Chu Lai the day Captain Blakeley crashed. He reported to the Chu Lai Tower that he had a "dead stick" and no oil pressure. There was an ammunition dump on his approach. He could not get the aircraft centered on the runway which ultimately caused his death. He used power to ensure that he did not land short and hit the ammunition dump. It is believed that he cut power (several of us heard the power coming off the aircraft) in order to avoid crashing into the Chu Lai tower area. As a result of the lack of power the aircraft's nose probe hit a sand dune and exploded. This very brave man could have bailed out but instead stayed with the aircraft ensuring no friendly casualties. He has had my respect all of these years and while talking with friends about Vietnam heroes, he is at the top of my list. From a ground observer the the incident, Michael E. Holmes, L/Cpl USMC Chu Lai 1965

Mrs. Violet M. Blakeley

Dear Mrs. Blakeley
On 23 July 1965, I wrote giving what details were then available concerning the death of your son, Captain Roy J. Blakeley. I also stated that a second letter would be forwarded to you containing the results of our investigation into the accident.
Roy was a member of a flight of four aircraft deployed on a ground support mission against the Viet Cong. After making several low level passes, his aircraft was severely damaged by ground fire. At this point, rather than leave his plane, your son attempted an emergency landing at Chu Lai Airfield. Regretfully, the damage to the aircraft was too great, and, in attempting to land, the plane left the runway and crashed. As you probably know, Captain Blakeley's exceptional valor and performance of duty has earned a posthumous nomination for the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Our investigation has been completed. We do not anticipate any further information. However, feel free to contact me if you need any further assistance.
Sincerely
Anthony Sgro
Lt Colonel, USAF
Commander

Captain Blakeley received both a Distinguished Flying Cross for his effort to save his damaged aircraft and a posthumous promotion to Major. He is buried in Rotan Cemetery, Rotan, Texas.

The following are excerpts from a typed copy of a copy by Mike Sweet, "which source was the original handwritten memoirs of Major Charles Swett. A Brief Narrative of Warren Light Artillery Known during the "Civil War," 1861, '62, '63, '64 & '65, as Swett's Battery, Hardee's Confs, "Army of Northern Ky." and "Army of Tenn. "Written for my family, Charles Swett," August 1908. (Provided by W. L. Roberts, 10 December 2008)
"Warren Light Artillery was organized in Vicksburg, Miss., in August 1861, and entered the Confederate service with 100, all told."
"19. Jos. Ashton, Corp."
BATTLES OF LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, MISSIONARY RIDGE AND RINGGOLD
"Sept. 21st. Camped at Bird's Mills at night, and remained there until the 23rd, leaving camp early in the morning, crossing "Missionary Ridge" to our line-of-battle at foot of Lookout Mountain. Sept. 24th. Enemy shilling from two forts. Near 12 M.,our line of skirmishers was advanced to feel the enemy until it came in range of two batteries, when it fell back to our line. Sept. 29, Longstreet commenced shelling Chattanooga from Lookout. At 12 M. received orders to hitch up, and after waiting till a late hour, ordered to unharness."
"Oct. 5th. Commenced shelling Chattanooga today from Missionary Ridge, and threw shells occasionally during the night and next day. Oct. 8th. Some cannonading from Ridge, very few shells reaching enemy's forts. Oct. 10th. Lieut. McDonald, wounded at Chickamauga, dying, Jos. Ashton was elected to fill the vacancy. We are having almost constant rain."
"Nov. 24th. Constant shelling; pretty hard fight on Lookout, commencing at or near 10 A.M. We were ordered to take another position, but the enemy got there first, when we crossed the railroad, taking a position that commanded a good deal of the railroad. Here for the first time, every cannoneer stood guard at night, with one hour reliefs. Nov. 25th. Moved out early this morning, going around to our left, ascended the Ridge, taking a position on the top, and soon became engaged, enemy's Parrot battery shelling our position continually, doing very little damage. At this place, we were supported by a Brigade of Texas and Arkansas troops, commanded by Gen'l Smith. No better troops ever fired a gun on any field. This gallant officer was mortally wounded at this point, and Lieutenants Shannon and Ashton were also wounded, neither leaving the field. Soon afterwards Lieut. Ashton was wounded again, that caused his death in a few days at the hospital."
"Killed and wounded at Lookout, Missionary Ridge and Ringgold.
(W) Lieut. Shannon
(K) Jos. Ashton
(W) R. Raney
(W) W. L. Fontaine, died
(K) Albert G. Marble"
"One of the most remarkable facts concerning the officers of the company, is not one of us ever drank a drop of winous, spirituous or malt liquors before the war, nor did we during the war. The company originally had three Lieutenants; that is, when it entered the service; four were elected to fill vacancies, and none of them were drinking men."

A record of Joseph ASHTON's burial:
Died in Marietta, Georgia from wounds received at the Battle of Missionary Ridge. Buried there in the Confederate Cemetery.

QUESTION: Is Rachel Caldonia ASHTON, the sister of Herman Ogden ASHTON, husband of Leon's sister, Elizabeth DANIELL. Herman was a son of Albert ASHTON and Rachel Caldonia ASTON [No "H"]. It is conceive able that Herman may have had a sister named after his mother Rachel Caldonia. On the 1920 census, Albert ASHTON's family is very difficult to read, faded ink and partial strokes. Herman has a younger sister whose name is illegible.
