General Notes: Wife - Barabara THOMAS

"Barbara THOMAS- (proven by will) Barbara was born about 1784 in Pennsylvania. Nothing is yet known of Barbara, by the writer, but she is mentioned by every researcher working this line and is mentioned as a daughter in the will of Michael THOMAS.

There was a Barbara THOMAS that lived near known Thomas relations in Adams County, Ohio. This Barbara married a Jacob YERIAN and had a daughter, Margaret. There is no known proof that this is the daughter of Michael, however." (The Children of Michael Thomas, chap. 11, p. 16, Bud Thomas)

"George Thomas' oldest son, Elijah Hart Thomas (E.H.) was the father of George Morgan Thomas who is listed in Regan's history of Lewis County as the "best personality" to ever come out of Lewis County, Kentucky. A letter from George Morgan Thomas to his daughter Arimenta, is shown below:

The following letter was written by Judge George Morgan THOMAS, of Vanceburg, Kentucky, to his only daughter, Arimenta (born 1855), who married Judge Samuel J. PUGH in 1872. Judge PUGH was born in 1850 and died in 1922. George M. THOMAS was a United States Congressman. He and many of his family are buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Vanceburg, Kentucky.

The original letter is in the private hands of Captain W. C. DUGAN, Vanceburg, KY.

Vanceburg, Kentucky

My dear daughter,

I enclose you a history of the Thomas family made out by C.W. Thomas, a cousin of mine in California. I made the history more complete by the additional statement as follows:

My great grandfather Michael Thomas was born in Virginia--was a soldier in the war of the Revolution and died in 1799. He was married twice--his first wife had fifteen children and his second wife had ten children. He was born and lived in Culpepper, Virginia--my grandfather Thomas was his oldest child by his last wife--my great grandmother (Eve Hart) died at the house of her son Solomon Thomas who lived on Kinney Creek at the mouth of Holly in this county--my grandfather George Thomas was born in Culpepper County, Virginia, January 4, 1771 and died at the Valley on Salt Lick in this county December 31, 1832 and was buried at the graveyard at that place-- my great grandmother Thomas (Eve) was born in Germany and came to this country in an excursion ship and was sold in Virginia for the term of seven years to pay her passage money. She was eighteen years old at her marriage. Her son, Solomon Thomas, brother of my grandfather, George Thomas, was the grandfather of Samuel McEldowney-- William McEldowney of the Valley is a son of Samuel McEldowney.

My mother was born in Loudon County, Virginia, in the year 1801--my father was born in this county at the Valley in 1804. They were married in the year 1826-- my brother, Lindsey F. Thomas, was born in August, 1827, at the Valley in this county and died in 1880 in Kansas. I was born at the same place (Valley) November 23, 1828. I had a sister born in 1831 and died in 1832 and a brother born 1833 and died in 1834--my sister was Sarah Jane and my brother was Oscar Fitzallen and both were born on a farm on Kinney near the mouth of Holly and both are buried at the Valley in this county. My grandfather Thomas and grandmother Thomas were married in Clark County, Kentucky, June 19, 1800, and moved to Lewis County in the year 1801 and settled at the Valley in this county. My grandmother Thomas' (Lavina Scholl Thomas) mother was Lavina Scholl (wife of Joseph Scholl). She came to Kentucky in 1769 (actually later) with Daniel Boone and was in Bryan's Station in Lincoln County, Kentucky, during the seige of the Indians (1782) and was one of the girls who went out of the fort to a spring to get water before the siege. In January 1847 she told me all about the siege and her trip to Kentucky--she was 101 years old--she died that year. She was blind when I saw her but her mind was as clear as a bell--she was very small and frail. My grandmother Thomas had three sons and eight daughters. She raised all her children and all lived till old age. My grandfather George Thomas was a pioneer in the Christian Church. He built a church on his farm at the Valley and organized the church. All of his children joined the church. His daughters married and all their husbands joined the church. Not one of the eleven children ever remarried. My grandfather Thomas died December 31, 1832, and grandmother died in 1870. My mother died April 20, 1863 and my father died April 20, 1883 and never remarried. My aunt Mary Wilson was a widow for thirty years. My aunt Elizabeth was born in 1826--she has been dead several years. Her husband Alexander Bridges was a cousin of Joshua B. Fitch--he is dead and I believe left two daughters. I was at their house in Missouri in 1868.

My grandfather Thomas Boggess and his wife were born in Loudon County, Virginia, and moved to Lewis County, Kentucky in 1814, and settled on the Poplar Flat. My grandfather and grandmother in early times rode horseback from Poplar Flat to Loudon County, Virginia. My grandmother had two sons and five daughters. My family is the only descendants in this state. My grandfather Boggess died in 1832 and my grandmother Boggess in 1839. My father and family were living at her house at the time of her death. Both are buried in a graveyard at the Savage place on Poplar Flat. My grandmother Boggess made a will and gave (a) slave girl to my mother. The girl married John Dennis in 1842. Dennis was a slave belonging to William Esham--he bought his from my mother and paid 300 in silver for her--the girl was worth $600 at the time of the sale. Jim and John Dennis are sons of Ellen Dennis, the girl--both lived in this town at the time.

The first school I attended was in 1836 and taught by William Smith at a school house on Kinney near Thomas Harrison's place. The next school I went to, William Watkins was the teacher in 1837. Watkins' wife was a sister of W.C. Halbert Sr. From 1839 to 1842, I went to school to McFarland. I commenced teaching school in 1846, taught three months at Myers school near Concord. In the fall of 1846, I hired on a flatboat for 50 cents a day and made a trip to New Orleans. I was 33 days making the trip and paid $16.50 in silver--I was prouder of that $16.50 than I would be of a thousand dollars today. In 1847, I taught another school at Myers school house for three months. In the fall of that year I went to Vicksburg Mississippi, and chopped cord wood at 50 cents a cord--having an attack of fever was told by my doctor I would not live twenty-four hours.
I could not turn over in my bed of straw and boards. I would not believe a word he said. Will power helps medicine--I'm eighty-two years old.

I came home in the fall of 1848--I attended school in Tollesboro--in January 1849 I made a contract to teach in Clarksburg. On the day I left home I went to Bethel Church and there saw a young man and a young girl ride up to the stand and get off--I thought she was the most beautiful women I ever saw--I went home to dinner and said to my mother, "I have seen my wife". She said "That is impossible". I went to Clarksburg that day, August 29, 1849, and next Sunday I met my intended wife--she appeared to have the same opinion that I had. December 24, 1849, we were promised to be married and were married on July 8, 1850. That was a true love match at sight. We went to house keeping. I had a surplus of $200--I had made a rule though life to keep a surplus. I only invested $25 in setting up housekeeping. My mother and wife's mother helped us. I taught school two years and studied law and obtained a license in October, 1851; was elected school commissioner in 1850 and served nine years--elected county attorney in 1854 and a member of the legislature in 1859 and reelected in 1861. In 1862 I was elected commonwealth attorney and served six years. In 1868, elected county judge and served two years. In 1872 was elected a member of the legislature and re-elected in 1873--in 1874 was elected circuit judge and served six years. In 1881 was appointed solicitor of internal revenue by President Garfield and served four years. In 1886 elected a member of Congress and served two years. In 1897 was appointed solicitor of internal revenue by President Mckinley and served four years. In 1901 retired from practice of law and am now living a quiet life.

These lines might not be interesting to others, but I am satisfied they will be interesting to my only dear child.

George M. Thomas

Note: George Morgan Thomas was born near Poplar Flat, Kentucky November 23, 1828. In addition to the above, he was a candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky in 1871 (defeated) and served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention from Kentucky, 1884. He died January 7, 1914 in Vanceburg, Kentucky, Lewis County.

James was at the Battle of Kettle Creek and received a certificate warrant 791 by Lt Col Elijah Clarke. The Battle of Kettle Creek, February 14, 1779, was a major encounter in the back country of Georgia during the American Revolutionary War, won by the American patriots. It was fought in Wilkes County about eight miles from present-day Washington, Georgia.

James widow, Martha died in 1856. Her obituary recants some of their life and James' participation in the Revolutionary War:
"Mrs. Martha Thomas died at Midway, Georgia, 22d ult., born in Goochland county, Virginia, in the year 1747, and was consequently in her 109th year. She moved to Georgia with her husband several years before the Revolutionary War and settled on the Savannah river, above Augusta, in what was formerly Wilkes now Lincoln county. They had two sons born before that war was declared. Mr. Thomas was a brave soldier and was in every hard fought battle in the South. He was at the head of the American column led by LaFayette on the British redoubt at Little York. He was within ten steps of Jasper when he fell at Savannah; was in the battles of Augusta and Charleston, and had two brothers killed at Eutaw."
[The Macon Weekly Telegraph, Macon, Georgia, Tuesday, April 8, 1856, Page 2]

In the 1881 obituary of John Sherrod Thomas, son of Martha Walker and James Thomas, is the statement: "His mother, Martha, was born in 1747, in Goochland county, Va. No date is known as to his father's birth. Martha Thomas died in Midway in 1856, at the age of 109 years. James, her husband, died in Hancock, at the age of 97; both are buried at the old family graveyard about 8 miles east of Milledgeville.

"James Thomas died in 1844 at age 97 in Baldwin county, Georgia."
From this, James was born about 1747.

James' headstone has no dates. A picture of the stone is on Find A Grave Memorial# 82793260:

Martha Thomas' age:
There is conflicting information posted on wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com. Arthur Slaton Descendants, Updated: 2004-11-29 by Susan Guthrie lists Martha WALKER, wife of James Thomas, born 10 Jan 1759 in St. James Parish, Goochland Co., Virginia. Martha parents are listed as David WALKER and Sarah SLATON. Sarah's birth listed as 26 Dec 1735 in St. Peter Parish, New Kent Co., Virginia, died 13 Oct 1811, Columbia Co., Georgia.[http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:3021315&id=I4614]
1. If Sarah Slayton Walker was Martha's mother and Martha was born in 1747, Sarah was 12 years old when was born. If Martha was born 10 Jan 1759, Sarah would have been 24 years old.
2. in the 1820 U.S. Census, Baldwin County, Georgia, Jas. Thomas is enumerated as 1 male 45 and over with 1 female 45 and over, births before 1775. They have 1 male, 16-26 with them, born after 1793, possibly the John S. Thomas in the 1850 census with Martha.
3. In the 1840 census of Baldwin County, Georgia, John S. Thomas, head of household is enumerated as 1 male 40-50, with 1 female 100 and upwards living with him.
4. In the 1850 census of Baldwin County, Georgia, Martha Thomas, age 108, born in Virginia, resides with John S. Thomas, age 58. Subtracting 10 years from the 108 listed in 150, she would have beed 98 in 1840.
5. Martha died 22 March 1856 at age 109, aging only 1 year in 6.
6. Martha certainly lived a long life, at least 97 years.

General Notes: Child - Colonel John Sherrod THOMAS, War of 1812

John Sherrod Thomas.
Col. J. S. Thomas was born in 1779, on Rocky Creek, Hancock county, Ga., and died at Midway, Ga., January 9, 1881. He was the son of Martha Walker and James Thomas, who were married in Virginia-removed to Columbia county, Ga. And thence to Hancock county. His mother, Martha, was born in 1747, in Goochland county, Va. No date is known as to his father's birth. Martha Thomas died in Midway in 1856, at the age of 109 years.-James, her husband, died in Hancock, at the age of 97; both are buried at the old family graveyard about 8 miles east of Milledgeville. Of the early life of Judge Thomas but little is known. He had such education that could be obtained from the common schools of the country, at a time when he and all the family were frequently called together to fly to the nearest block house for protection from the Indians, his mother packing them on the horses, while his father, together with the men in the community, gathered and gave battle to the foe in defence of their homes.
In 1806, he was commissioned by the Governor, Captain of a Volunteer company, raised mostly on the eastern side of the river, and was several times ordered out to repel local invasions of the adjacent Indians, and held that command until 1812. In 1813, he went into what is known as the war of 1812, as Lieutenant of Artillery, in a company commanded by Capt. Jett Thomas, who resigned after one year's service, leaving J. S. Thomas in command as Captain. The artillery company and the Baldwin Blues, were order to rendezvous at Long Shoals, August 13, 1813, by the government.
After the war, he made a contract with the government to supply subsistence stores to the army, then serving in the Creek Nation. He served in that capacity several years to the full satisfaction of Wm. H. Crawford, then Secretary of War. He was offered, by Gen. Glasscock, and later by Gen. Gaines, the position of Assistant Adjutant General, but declined on the ground that he had been offered and accepted the position of Pay Master for the volunteer troops, who had not been paid off, and as he had to go to Washington to settle his own account, he could attend to that business better than any one else, owing to the great confidence felt toward him by Wm. H. Crawford, Secretary of War.
He succeeded in both missions, promptly. His own record says, Mr. Crawford gave an order to the Auditor, saying, "I know this man, settle his accounts without red tape, and see that he has the money to pay off the volunteers."
Going into civil life, he lost heavily by a too generous nature and too implicit confidence in the honestly of others. He settled a large estate on the sugar lands of Louisiana, but losing a brother there of yellow fever, he gave up that country and concluded to locate himself in Dooly county, Ga.
About 1825, on the occasion of Lafayette's visit to Milledgeville, he was Marshal of the Day. Subsequently on the occasion of Henry Clay's visit to Milledgeville, he, together with the late Col. A. H. Kenan and Seaton Grantland, were appointed a committee to go to Gordon and receive and escort the distinguished guest to the city.
In 1841, he and Col. Miller Grieve were elected to the House and Col. A. H. Kenan to the Senate.
In 1844, he was appointed Director, by the Governor of the Central Bank of Ga., and he and the late A. M. Nisbet, cashier, had the arduous task of winding up the affairs of that institution. He gave his whole time and attention to this business, and nearly cost him his life, by causing the most severe illness he had ever experienced.
In 1845-46 he was Judge of the Inferior Court.
In 1866 he became a member of the Protestant Episcopal Church.
His losses by overweening confidence in his fellow man in early life, and later by the results of the war, he bore with a stoicism rarely seen, and which to a certain extent he must have learned from the Indians, who he used to say were always his friends, and who used to escort him when he had large sums of money to carry through the country.
In 1862, he made a contract with the government for supplying brandy and whisky. He soon found his distiller trying to defraud the government and discharged him at once. Speculators tried to buy from him and were notified they would be kicked off the premises immediately. He had an intense hatred for any man who would speculate on the fortunes of the government, and the Confederate States inspectors always took his statement without any vouchers or inspections. A speculator he would kick into the road, but any Confederate soldier, however humble, always found a hearty welcome and always left him with a well-filled haversack and a canteen of peach and honey: and the annual fleece of a flock of 400 sheep was given freely to the wives, sisters and daughters of the sons of the Confederacy, to be woven into cloth and socks to assist their tattered rags in keeping out of the cold. But a few months before the close of the war, when the result was inevitable, he sold $40,000 worth of cotton and invested in Confederate bonds-such was his confidence.
The funeral of the late Judge John S. Thomas took place on Tuesday from the Episcopal Church in this city. The impressive services were conducted by Rev. J. M. Stoney, the pastor. The remains were followed to the cemetery by a large number of citizens, notwithstanding the extreme inclemency of the day.
