General Notes: Child - James Knox TAYLOR

James Knox TAYLOR was Supervising Architect of the U.S. Treasury Department in 1903. (Buildings of West Virginia: with support from the West Virginia Humanities Council (Buildings of the United States) by S. Allen Chambers, p. 249)

James Knox TAYLOR is closely associated with William Martin AIKEN, descendant of William O'DANIEL of Stafford County, Virginia. Both AIKEN and TAYLOR surnames from South Carolina are related, but the relationship of James Knox to William Martin AIKEN's family has not been discovered.

James Knox TAYLOR Born: 10/11/1857, Died: 1929
Former Supervising Architect of the U.S. Treasury, James Knox Taylor was born in Knoxville, IL, to H. Knox and Mary (Young) Taylor. He attended public schools in St. Paul, MN, and the two-year special course offered at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1877-1879) before moving to New York City, where he worked in the offices of Charles Haight and Bruce Price. In 1882 he returned to St. Paul and worked in partnership with Cass Gilbert as Gilbert & Taylor, a firm which produced the Endicott Building (according to Taylor's letter of application for a U.S. Treasury position, 5 September 1893). This enterprise continued for some 10 years, and Taylor moved to Philadelphia, the former home of his wife Adele Chambers Taylor, where he entered into a partnership with Amos J. Boyden, another MIT graduate whom he had probably met through their mutual activities in the AIA.
Boyden & Taylor were in operation only a year when Taylor applied for a position as a "first class draftsman" in the office of the Supervising Architect of the U.S. Treasury, stating that the "general financial depression" then current made it difficult for him to support his family any longer in the Boyden & Taylor partnership. By 1895 Taylor had relocated to Washington, D.C., as a temporary draftsman, but continued to be listed in the Philadelphia city directories under Boyden & Taylor through 1898. In October 1897, as a result of a competitive civil service exam, Taylor was made Supervising Architect for the U.S. Treasury, a position in which he remained until 1912, when he returned to MIT as a professor of architecture. He resigned from MIT in 1914, returned briefly to Philadelphia and then settled in Tampa, FL, where he was residing at his death.

General Notes: Husband - James Knox TAYLOR

WILLIAM HENRY TAYLOR.
William Henry Taylor and family stood at the head of society. Mr. Taylor was possessed of every quality that it takes to constitute a moral, Christian gentleman. He was a leading member of the Methodist church and a strong supporter of the same. Mr. Taylor at one time was very wealthy, but about the year 1849 he engaged in a perfectly legitimate cotton speculation, in which he lost the larger part of his fortune. The loss of his property did not have a tendency to detract from his moral and religious life. He died as he had lived, honored and respected by all who knew him. His wife was the sister of George W. Hails. They had a large family of children. The daughters were noted for their beauty and accomplishments. One of these daughters became the wife of Albert Elmore; the other the wife of Col. John W. A. Sanford." (1)

Thomas TAYLOR's plantation, or a portion of it, was taken by the State of South Carolina to build Columbia, the new seat of state government. (Old and New Columbia, page 65, by J. F. Williams)

In the 1790 census, Richland County, South Carolina, Series: M637 Roll: 11 Page: 140, Thomas TAYLOR's household is shown as "3 2 1 - 70". He lives next door to his brother James TAYLOR.
