Records at the Saint Peter and Pauls Cemetery, Elmira, Chemung County, New York, list Lorana Olcott Sullivan's death in Hertfordshire[*], England, on 7 April 1999 at age 61 and her burial on 22 April 1999 in Division L, Section 1, grave 24, beside her father, John E. Sullivan, grave 25, and her mother, Mrs. Lorana Sullivan, grave 26.
[*Lorana's obituary, below, lists her death in the London hospital. Her last residence may have been in Hertfordshire. RLD]

Obituary: Lorana Sullivan, investigative journalist and dog breeder, died of cancer at the London Hospital on April 7,1999, aged 61. She was born in Corning, New York, on August 26, 1937.
Investigative journalists are judged by results. Lorana Sullivan's exposés of share-trading bucket shops helped to inspire the Financial Services Act 1986 to protect investors. Her detailed unravelling of the bizarre activities of the Rossminster group and its imitators heralded benchmark legal rulings to nullify complex artificial tax avoidance schemes that had sheltered billions. These were eccentric achievements for an American woman.
Few of the frauds that attracted Sullivan's painstakingly detailed attentions survived. One unhappy exception was the Bank of Credit and Commerce International. Had customers and the Bank of England taken full note of her factual reports, years before the collapse, creditors would have saved many billions.
Lorana Olcott Sullivan, an imposing but quietly spoken six-footer, was the daughter of a prominent family in Elmira, New York. She inherited both her New England mother's courtly patrician charm and her lawyer father's combative determination. Educated at Cornell University, Sullivan was cast to be a society hostess but preferred journalism. After a violent youthful marriage which she escaped within weeks and which was annulled by the Roman Catholic Church, she threw herself into the hitherto closed male world of financial journalism. Journalism training at Columbia University and a Pulitzer travelling fellowship helped her to become the first woman journalist to be taken on by The Wall Street Journal.
She earned a tour as the Journal's London correspondent in 1970. When it ended, she quit and went native, joining The Sunday Times when it began the high-cost investigative journalism that drove Sunday newspapers in the 1970s and 1980s. Later, she ploughed a fertile furrow at The Observer. Her career waxed and waned with that privileged phase in British journalism, when investigations often took weeks to reach the page but frequently affected public policy.
One of her earliest Sunday Times tasks was to track the burgeoning activities of the Slater Walker group, then London's dominant financial conglomerate, round the Far East and the Pacific. The resultant reports, which combined in-depth analysis of documents with on-the-spot interviews, appeared just as Slater was to merge with a top investment bank. Revelations of internecine trading fortunately scuppered the deal months before the London banking crisis of 1974.
Though sometimes a prolific writer, Sullivan knew her limitations when it came to translating her mountains of detective work into attractive newspaper copy and was happy to collaborate with sympathetic editors. Some of her solo efforts were the most striking, however. After the tax-avoidance scandal, which was used to relaunch The Sunday Times in 1979 after a year of industrial disputes, Sullivan homed in on tricky or dangerous targets, including financial operations connected to organised crime. She accepted death threats as part of the job. For The Observer, she revealed the Arabian financial connections of Jonathan Aitken, leading to the former MP's resignation from the board of TV-am.
Patient sifting and collating of mounds of financial documents was matched by an ability to win the confidence both of the authorities and the light-fingered. Fraudsters wept on her shoulder, sometimes literally, as they spilt the beans. During an investigation of the offshore financier Robert Vesco, however, Sullivan got on first-name terms with the then President of Costa Rica. While Sullivan was engrossed in one such exercise, an American admirer insisted against her wishes on giving her a pedigree Kerry Blue terrier. The admirer, like others, did not last the course. The dog changed her life. To accommodate the prize-winning Gotcha and his offspring, Sullivan swapped her West End flat for a converted tithe barn in Hertfordshire, which itself became the subject of a precedent-setting legal judgement, and later for a lodge near Hitchin that earned her an award for restoration.
Sullivan became a successful shower and breeder though, inevitably, she met controversy. Fanciers of the Irish strain of Kerry Blues did not at first take kindly to Sullivan's American strain.
Charm eventually prevailed and Sullivan has willed a permanent prize for Kerry Blues at Crufts. Her friends may remember her more for the throaty laughter that defused countless tense moments.
[The Times, London, England, 10 April 1999]

"We had our last conversation during the closing days of March 1999. On 8 April, the day after she died, I left England for the United States for a long-standing vacation."
"A few days into my stay I received news that her body would be returning to America, to be buried in her home town of Elmira, in upstate New York. Being in the States it seemed only right that I should attend her funeral. And so, on Wednesday 21 April I flew into Kennedy, hired a car, and made my way 200 miles north in good time for the service at Our Lady of the Lord [sic, Lourdes. RLD] church at 11.00 am the next day."
"During the service the priest read out her obituary published in The Times a week or so earlier. Reproduced overleaf, it gives a revealing insight into a fascinating person. However, there is no mention of her work of which I know Lorana was particularly proud - her investigations into Mohamed 'Al' Fayed's illicit acquisition of Harrods, which had provided much of the basis of the sensational 1990 DTI Inspectors' Report that had exposed Fayed officially as an audacious lying thief." [Jonathan Boyd Hunt pays tribute to the American investigative financial journalist Lorana Sullivan, from Section One of: Guardianlies.com]

Lorana was buried on April 22, 1999 in Division L, Section 1, Saint Peter and Pauls Cemetery, Elmira, Chemung County, New York

The Lorana Sullivan Foundation was established as twin charities in New York and in Britain with an endowment from Lorana Sullivan's will to enhance the role and education of women in business and financial reporting, and generally to improve the standards of investigative journalism. The Foundation, which sponsors the CIJ's London Summer School, provides two scholarships a year for students to follow in her footsteps at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. The Sullivan Foundation is one of the biggest donors to the graduate school and has so far awarded 20 Sullivan scholarships and has invested $977,738 in scholarships at Columbia.

The Lorana Sullivan Scholarship
Lorana Sullivan used her education at the Journalism School as a springboard to a long and successful career in business journalism, both in the US and UK. Over the years, she poked and probed the questionable, illegal and unethical practices of con-artists and respected state and private institutions alike. A full-tuition fellowship is awarded annually in her memory to a Master of Arts student in the business and economics concentration who plans to pursue a career in investigative business journalism. All admitted applicants to the programme demonstrating academic and professional achievement, as well as financial need, are considered for the Sullivan Fellowships. The award is for study at Columbia University in the US. [http://www.tcij.org/about-cij/our-funders/lorana-sullivan-foundation]

Frank M. BELL married Miss Sallie Swann, daughter of Thomas R. Swann, a cotton merchant of Tyler.
The 1900 census shows that "Frank" and Sallie have been married for 25 years. She has had 8 children, 5 who are alive.
Also in the household is "SWANN, Sarah Aunt W F Oct 1824 75 Wd 48 0 0 Virginia Virginia Virginia". From this we know that she was born in Virginia, had been married for 48 years, was widowed, and claimed to have had no children. Both of her parents were born in Virginia. SWANN is likely her husband's name, not her maiden name.

"Dear Friends and Family:
It is with great sadness that I write tonight to let you know that my mom has died earlier in the evening. As some of you know, she was evacuated to a nursing home in San Antonio due to hurricane Katrina. Juli and I had planned to go up and get her yesterday to being her to a facility closer to home. However on Wednesday, she was found unresponsive at her nursing home. She was taken to a local hospital and found to be overwhelming septic and in cardiogenic shock. Juli and I flew up emergently on Wednesday. She was conscious, responsive and knew we were there. Her condition waxed and waned over the next few days but we continued with aggressive treatment, as was her wish. Juli and I flew home this afternoon to get some things we needed and the whole family planned to drive up in the morning. In the early evening, the hospital called to say that she had rapidly deteriorated and resuscitative efforts were unsuccessful. Thanks to all of you who prayed for us. We were fortunate to have arrived while mom was still aware and are grateful for the time we had with her."

       Spouse: Catherine ROWAN (1875-1926) 2516,2780
         Marr: Abt 1899

General Notes: Child - Eleck SWANSON

Alec SWENSON was born in Sweden, date uncertain. Conflicting records indicate his birth sometime between 1859-1864. In census information Eleck SWANSON is 36 in 1900, 48 in 1910, 57 in 1920, and 64, three years later in 1923, according to his Mississippi Burial or Removal Permit. Records also list him as "Eleck" and "Alex" Swanson.

In notes by Patrick BERNARD from conversations with his mother, Agnes Swanson BERNARD, Alex's daughter, is a comment that Alex was born on an October 26, and was buried on October 26, 1923. When "Aleck" immigrated to the United States, his surname was anglicized to SWANSON, but his name is also spelled as SWANSEN in the 1910 census. He was called "Alexander" and "Alex" by his family, his given name further anglicized?

"Aleck" SWANSON became a citizen of the United States on March 12, 1895. His citizenship paper from the Louisiana Civil District Court for the Parish of Orleans states he was a subject of the King of Sweden. He applied for citizenship on 7 March 1893. Joseph BURKE and Fred PETERSON, U.S. citizens, stated that Aleck SWANSON "continually resided within the limits and jurisdiction of the United States of America for more than five years last past.", and furthermore, "has resided for one year at least within the State of Louisiana that during the whole of said time he has behaved himself as a man of good moral character, attached to the principles of the Constitution of thee United States of America, and well disposed to the good order and happiness of the same..." (Citizenship paper in the possession of Aleck's grandson, Patrick BERNARD of Bowie , Maryland. RLD)

Eleck married Catherine ROWAN about 1898. He was some 15 years older than Catherine. They had eight children, only three of whom survived early childhood, Agnes Anna, Carmen Catherine, and Michael Harris SWANSON.

Alexander SWANSON was named as "Eleck" in two of these three censuses:
1900 U.S. Census, Louisiana, Orleans Parish, Ward 15, New Orleans; Series: T623 Roll: 576 Page: 131:

This census indicates that Alexander SWANSON was born in August 1864 in Sweden, as were both his parents, that he migrated to the United States in 1883, and was a naturalized citizen. He is a day laborer who is educated and can read, write, and speak English.
