Sem DANIEL was born 30 Mar 1766, a son of William O'DANIEL. Sem later dropped the O' from his name, as did all of William's sons, but William, in his will, named his "sun" as Sem O'DANIEL and gave him one feather bed and furniture.
Sem DANIEL first married Ann ALLEN and second, Mary Agnes Elizabeth RICE, who became his widow.
"Sem & Mary Agnes Elizabeth Rice Daniels are my 4 great-grandparents." (Sybile Pierce, http://www.oldplaces.org/bamberg/vitals/sybile3.html)
"Sem DANIEL"?? Provided this is Sem, the enumeration fits his known family: Sem, about 24, wife Ann ALLEN, and a son born about 1789.

Some say that Sem married three times. That is understandable based on records which name his second wife as Elizabeth and his widow as Mary Agness; however, the research of Sybile McMillan Pierce states that Mary Agness and Elizabeth RICE were the same person.
"Sem DANIEL, 2nd ch. of William DANIEL, Sr., was b. 1758(?); received such education as he could get at that time in the country schools. He became a magistrate of that section of the country, and had ambition enough to give his children better advantages than he had had. Sem DANIEL mar. 3 times; lost the only ch. by the first marriage, and lost a son by the second. His third wife was the mother of 2 girls, one of whom became the mother of Mrs. A. E. THOMPSON [William Holman THOMSON], of Blacksville, S.C." ("Our family circle", p. 488)
Sem's two daughters were Mary R. DANIEL, born 1807, who married Charles W. RICE, and Elizabeth Jane DANIEL, born 1809, who married John William RUSH. The dates of Sem's marriages are undiscovered at this time.
Sem died in Barnwell County, South Carolina, leaving a will dated 1833 and recorded in 1837.

Elizabeth Pauline "Paula" ALLEN was born on May 2, 1927 in Pittsburg, Contra Costa County, California. She attended Concord Elementary School and Mount Diablo High School in Concord, California, graduating in June 1946.
While in high school, Paula worked part-time as "soda jerk" at an Ice Cream Fountain Shop, and later in sales in a Dress Store. Her first full-time employment was as a bookkeeper for the American Trust Bank in Concord. She was hired by the Western Asbestos Corporation in San Francisco, California.
Paula married Kenneth James DITMORE on September 16, 1951 in Monterey?, California. Kenneth had been enlisted in the U. S. Navy since 1944, participating in World War II. Paula became a consummate military wife, raising their two children, Michael James, and Timothy Troy, and keeping the home fires burning when Kenneth was on deployments and overseas tours. She was active in Cub Scouts, the Parent Teachers Association, and taught Arts and Crafts in the base school while they were stationed in Rota, Spain.
On one of Ken's changes of duty stations from Virginia to California, Paula had to drive the herself and the boys from coast to coast. Ken's sister, Linda, was returning from a vacation in Europe at the time, and accompanied Paula on the trip. Paula said, "A dull trip it wasn't, not with two women, two boys, and a dog." It was a week of adventure.
On another occasion, while Ken was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, Paula's sister's husband, was also stationed there. Paula and May Lou rented a large house in Westwood, California. They moved into the house with five children and one dog between them to wait out the family separations.
Paula's higher education pursuits took her to California State College, San Francisco for one year and San Joaquin Delta Junior College, Stockton, California where she took advanced ceramics classes and other art related subjects. These courses eventually led her to making her own porcelain dolls.
During another of Kenneth's overseas deployments, Paula was able to join him in Hong Kong, seeing the Forbidden City, Tiger Balm Gardens, and the Border of the Peoples Republic of China, and adding to her doll collection. She also made a special comment about riding "the delightful little green ferry boats between Kowloon and Hong Kong."
When the boys were in high school, Paula returned to work, starting part-time as a clerk in Weinstock's Department Store in Stockton, California, and eventually rising to become manager of seven departments of the store, all at one time. Her responsibilities included the China, Silver, Lamps, Pictures and Gift Departments. Paula quit working at Weinstock's after eight years there to be with Ken when he retired from his position at Leiba & Bowers Accounting.
Paula's hobbies were her collections, including small glass figurines, miniatures, Hummels, plates, and especially her dolls which number about 600 and are from all parts of the world. Ken's travels to many areas of the world contributed to Paula's receiving many international dolls to add to her collection and remembrances. Paula busied herself making her own porcelain dolls as well, reproductions of famous dolls of the past, which are now part of collection. She is also an avid reader, with her tastes ranging from fiction and historical novels to comedies, science fiction, mysteries and classics.
Paula and Ken celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2001 in Sacramento, California with their sons and wives, grandchildren, brothers and sister and families present for the occasion.
Paula died at home in Grass Valley, California on February 8, 2005. Her obituary, published in the Contra Costa Times newspaper read:
"Paula DITMORE May 2, 1927 - February 8, 2005 Born Elizabeth Pauline Allen to mother Lou Morris (Lee) Allen and father Raymond M. Allen in Pittsburg, California. Paula spent most of her early years in Concord, California, graduating from Mt. Diablo High School in 1946. She knew her husband, Ken, in High School and were married for 53 years, the first 23 years as a Navy wife. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Lou Lingenfelter of Grass Valley, sons Michael of El Cerrito and Timothy of Santa Rosa, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. After a relatively short illness, complicated by chronic lung and heart problems, she was brought home to Alta Sierra with aid of Hospice. She spent a peaceful weekend with most of her family including her sister, sons and their families, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She lapsed into a coma before passing into her Maker's arms on February 8, 2005. She chose to have no services at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of the Foothills, 12399 Nevada City Hwy. Grass Valley, CA 95945."
At a later date, by their wishes, the ashes of Paula and her husband, Ken, will be "scattered outside of the Golden Gate Bridge".

"Isaac ALLEN apparently was a prosperous farmer. In 1860 he owned six slaves. As his two oldest children died during the Civil War period, his only remaining son probably continued to live with his parents after the War to help oversee farming operations.
Some time after the death in late 1884 of Artemisia, his first wife and mother of his children, he married Mary Jane SIMPSON, widow of John R. PATTON, and possibly a neighbor. A late life marriage, they had no children.
In his will dated 13 Nov 1888, he left personal property and provisions for his widow, stating that she should accept $400 but if she did not accept it in lieu of dower, it should go to his granddaughter Mary Henrietta ALLEN; 234A of land in Catawba Township to his grand-daughter; and a $100 note and any personal property already in his possession to his son T. M. ALLEN. The Catawba property was "bounded by the lands of Mrs. Polly RODDEY, Mrs. M. J. ALLEN (his wife), Wm WYLIE, Wm ABERNATHY & John SPENCER". His son and wife were named as Executors. He died about seven years later.
Isaac and Artemisia and their children are buried at Neely's Creek Cemetery. Also Mary Jane ALLEN is buried with her PATTON husband there." (Jerri Hall)

General Notes: Wife -
There are two possibilities for Artemisia DANIEL who may be the daughter of David and Mary Muldoon DANIEL. Jerri Hall writes: "Her father (or father-in-law?) was David DANIEL. He calls her his daughter in his will, but sometimes that term was also used for widowed daughters in law...I have not been entirely satisfied that Artemisia was married until her later known marriage to Isaac ALLEN." This opens the other possibility that Artemisia was an unwed mother living in her father's household.
Now the questions: Who fathered Artemisia's sons William B., Thomas A., and John L. DANIEL born before 1840? If an Unknown DANIEL, was Artemisia's maiden name DANIEL or something else? More research required.
After the death of David DANIEL, as one of his heirs, Artemisia was involved in two property transactions. On 23 July 1832, Mary Ann DANIEL for "the natural love and affection which I bear unto Reuben DENNIS, John POLK, C S CLINE & Artemisia DANIEL" gives them all her property at her decease. Wit: Joseph FERGUSON, Henry LEE. Recorded 1 October 1832. (Z60). On the same date, Reuben DENNIS, John POLK, C S CLINE & Artemisia DANIEL obligate themselves for a $400 bond, the condition of which is that Mary Ann DANIEL may occupy the 112 acres where she lives during her natural life, the property at the expiration of that time to return to the legatees specified in the will of David DANIEL. If any one of them should forfeit the bond, he is liable to pay it alone. All four signed. Wit: Joseph FERGUSON, Henry Lee. Recorded 27 November 1832. (Z77). Mary Ann DANIEL died about 1839.
Assuming Artemisia was first married to a DANIEL, he probably was deceased by 1840 when Atermasiah (sic) Daniel was listed for the first time as head of household in Chester District. The 1840 U.S. Census, South Carolina, Chester County; Series: M704 Roll: 510 Page: 302 lists "Atemesiah DANIEL" who has three boys, one, 0-5, and two 5-10, and one girl 10-15. This is a duplicate of the "Mesiah DANIEL" in York Co. (Explained by Jerri Hall as an anomaly that Mesiah lived on or near the county line and was enumerated in both.)(Note: a comparison of names around "Atemesiah" and "Mesiah" on the two census pages reveal no other duplicate entries. RLD)
1840, York Co., "Mesiah DANIEL", 30-40, with 3 boys: one under 5, one 5-10, and one, 10-15; and one girl 5-10, lives 15 homes away and is named on the same page as J. H. ABERNATHY and "Mrs. DANIEL". She is thought to be Artemisia DANIEL, daughter of David DANIEL and Mary MULDOON. James Harvey ABERNATHY was the father of William Calhoun ABERNATHY who married Mary Emma DANIEL before 1875. Mary Emma was d/o William B. DANIEL and Elizabeth WYLIE, the widow of Henry Fuller WHITE. William B. is s/o Artemisia DANIEL and Unknown. Artemisia is thought to be d/o David and Mary Muldoon DANIEL. She is named in David's Will. Was she a daughter who married another DANIEL or a widowed daughter-in-law? (as asked by Jerri Hall). There are four children in her household: a girl 10-15 years (Helen Alice?); and three boys, presumed to be her sons, two 5-10 years (William & Thomas) and one under 5 years (John). Hellen Alice DANIEL, born about 1827, who married James Harvey ABERNATHY about 1842, is believed to be Artemesia's daughter, 10-15, in this census.
In the 1840 U.S. Census, South Carolina, York County; Series: M704 Roll: 516 Page 319, "Mesiah DANIEL", 30-40, is head of household With her are 3 boys: one under 5, one 5-10, and one, 10-15; and one girl 5-10. She is named on the same page as J. H. ABERNATHY and his next door neighbor, a "Mrs. DANIEL". Mrs. DANIEL, 15 houses away from "Mesiah", is with two males, 15-20, on girl, 15-20, and herself, 50-60.
By the mid-1840's, Artemisia DANIEL had married Isaac A. ALLEN. In the 1850 and 1860 census records, she is listed as his wife with both Daniel and Allen children in the family. Her Allen children were Julia A., Isaac Halcot and Theodore Middleton ALLEN. Their two oldest children died in their late teens. As late as 1870 Middleton ALLEN was still living in the home with his parents, indicating that he may have married after that time." (Jerri Hall)
Artemisia's son, Isaac H. ALLEN is named as "ALLEN, I. H., 1846 - 1864" on the Confederate Monument, Erected by the Neely's Creek Church Cemetery Association, August 22, 1993 (York County, SC).

From available information, correllating census data and names from THE DESCENDANTS OF DR JOHN RICHARD MOBLEY, SR AND LUCRETIA SIMKINS, it appears this is the husband and children of Lilly J. ALLEN who died about Oct 1879, presumably from compilications of childbirth. Daniel is a widower with a 7 month old daughter. There is a difference in the name of Lilly's daughter, M. Elizabeth vice "Lily HOLLAND." Was she later called "Lilly"?

Lilly J. ALLEN, born about 1855, is named as "E. J." age 4 in the 1860 census and as Lilly J. age 14 in the 1870 census. Lilly married Daniel HOLLAND about 1875. Leon David "Tuck" Wilson kindly shared this information which he credits to Elinor Van Dyke and Linton Eugene Floyd III:
"Twenty-one year old John Colbert Floyd was a student at Emory College when the War Between The States broke out. In patriotic zeal , the boys at what is now Emory at Oxford organized a company to volunteer for service. They petitioned Alexander Stephens, Vice President of the Confederacy and a friend of John Julius Floyd, to be accepted into the Confederate Army. They were accepted as part of Cobb's Legion and assigned to the Army of Northern Virginia under Longstreet. The troop chose John as their Captain but the Georgia Infantry took them all in as privates. He enlisted as a private in the " Lamar Infantry," later Company A , Cobb's Legion of Georgia Volunteer Infantry. Before he left to fight , his parents put on a "Wartime Ball" for the young soldiers and the girls from "The Southern Masonic Female College". The girls had sewn a flag and senior Louisa Caroline Allen was chosen to present the flag to the company of volunteers from Emory. It was accepted by John Colbert Floyd."
"The ball was a gala occasion with John Floyd and Louisa Allen leading out in the grand March. Soon they wandered out to the back stairs where they spent most of the evening getting engaged. They were engaged throughout the war."
"Within a few months of enlisting, John was elected lieutenant, later commanding the unit. On September 14, 1862 , during the bloody engagement at Crampton's Gap, Maryland, in which many fine Covington men were killed or captured, he was wounded and imprisoned. He was released in a prisoner exchange and went home to Covington to recuperate. While there, he again wrote Vice President Stephens, this time to for permission to raise a company of men (too old to be conscripted) that would provide their own horses and join the fight. This was authorized by the Confederate War Department June 30, 1863. He fought again and was wounded at Fredericksburg. He was captured again at the Battle of Sayler's Creek just three days before Lee surrendered as the Confederacy drew its last gasping breaths in April, 1865. He was released June 18, 1865. Cobb's Legion participated in more than 60 engagements.'
"Upon the end of the war and after his release from the prison camp, John Colbert Floyd returned to marry his sweetheart from the college fare well Wartime Ball, Lousia Caroline Allen, in 1865. They lived in Decatur County, Georgia in 1873 and later moved to Columbus, Ga."

WHO IS THIS JOHN RICE? Is he the John RICE who married Nancy ALLEN in Abbeville District, South Carolina in January 1774?
Chronological problems exist concerning Nancy ALLEN being the mother of some of the children of John RICE who died in Baldwin County, Georgia about 1814. Assuming Nancy was about age 16 when married in 1774, born then about 1858, known births of two assigned sons, John, 1809 and William Felton, 1813 are highly questionable. Nancy would have been age 51 in 1809 and 55 in 1813.
Did John marry twice? A second wife also named Ann/Nancy?
Pertinent records to this research include:
"435. Letters of Administration, Milledgeville, Baldwin Co, Ga., Court of Ordinary Mins.P.115 appointing Nancy RICE as administrator fo Estate of John RICE."
][Re: Guardianship, are there some missing records from this listing? No guardianship records for John, James, Susan and Mary? If John b. 1808 and father died before 1818, he would have been age 10 and a guardian assigned. RLD]
574. Guardianship, Milledgeville, Baldwin Co, Ga., Court of Ordinary Mins.1812-1819 -P. 297 naming James BIVINS guardian of Julia RICE, lawful age orphan of John. Also same for Jane RICE. [Note: James BIVINS married Martha RICE, daughter of John and Nancy RICE, in 1818. RLD]
575. Guardianship, Milledgeville, Baldwin Co, Ga., Court of Ordinary Mins.1819-1833 - Names James BIVINS guardian of Betsy RICE & Shadrack BIVINS (Jr.) guardian of William RICE.
576. Estate Division, Milledgeville, Baldwin Co, Ga.(Plat Included), Bk. p. 152-154. Dated 8 Dec. 1818 - Names wife Nancy, children John, Betsy, James, Susan, Jane, Julia, Mary, William. Also James BIVINS. Each getting slaves & a lot of a tract of land which appears to be near Fishing Creek in Milledgeville.(James BIVINS already owning adjoining land.).
577. Estate Returns, Milledgeville, Baldwin Co, Ga., Return Bk. B, p. 55-56. Made by James BIVINS.
578. Ga.Tax Digest, Shows a John RICE listed in 1805 Wilkinson,1809 Wilkinson & 1815 Baldwin Co. 1794 Warren Co,Ga .Tax Digest shows land owned by John on Hardens Creek, Baldwin Co, Ga.

124 Young Allen, son of Josiah Allen, Sr.
ALLENS OF THE SOUTHERN STATES, by Norma C. Miller.
"Allens of the Southern States." Lillie Ruby File.
Young Allen was a minor in 1784 when his father's estate was settled. He is presumed to be the son of Josiah Allen's first wife since he was not mentioned as the son of Josiah's second wife in the will of Aaron Etheridge. Young married Susanna Richardson, the daughter of Amos Richardson of Edgefield Co., SC. Young purchased a plantation called "Fruit Hill" in Edgefield and his will was probated there in 1828. Young Allen's name was found three times in the Edgefield Co. Court Minutes from 1787 to 1795: (see file). Young Allen was the executor of the estate of his brother, Josiah Allen, Jr. in 1795. In 1809, the will of Amos Richardson was proved in Edgefield Co. and it mentioned his daughter, Susannah, the wife of Young Allen, grandson Aaron Allen and granddaughter Rebecca, wife of Benjamin Frazier. On the 1800 census of Edgefield Co., Young Allen was listed as the head of a household which included 1 male and 1 female ages 25-45, (born 1755-1775), 1 female 10-16 years, 1 male and 1 female under 10 years. The will of Young Allen was proved 26 Jun 1834, Edgefield Co., and mentioned his wife, Susannah and the children his daughter Rebecca Frazier, deceased, and her husband Benjamin Frazier.
John Chapman's book "History of Edgefield County, South Carolina," tells something about Young Allen of "Fruit Hill," which is situated 12 miles north of Edgefield Court between the Savannah and Saluda Rivers. The area was originally settled by Allen, Richardson, Culpepper, and other families. The particular place and homestead known as "Fruit Hill" was settled by a man named Young Allen, from NC. A daughter of Young Allen married Benjamin Frazier and inherited "Fruit Hill" from Young Allen. The records of Edgefield Co. confirm some of the above, but the statement about Young Allen being "from North Carolina" is an interesting one. No records were found for Josiah Allen in North Carolina but his father's family moved to Granville, NC in 1761. Young was a minor on 8 July 1784 when a guardian was appointed for him, thus he was born after July 1763. His father had land surveyed in SC in 1762 but the grant was dated 8 Mar 1763. Young may have been born in NC before the family moved, or it may have been meant that the Allen family came from NC.
"Twenty-One Southern Families." Joyce Reeves File.
Fruit hill was sold to Major John C. Allen by Benjamin Frazier.

Considering the age progression of children, Elizabeth may have died after the birth of Wyley, when a 3 to four year window opened before the birth of Lula, age 2 months in the 1870 census and most likely then the child of Manda. Pending further discovery, W.R.'s children born before 1870 are assigned to him and Elizabeth. RLD)

"Augustus Howard ALSTON, Jr. b.20 Aug. 1907 in Charleston, S.C. d. WW II, 03 April 1943 as Commander of the Submarine "Pickerel." Japanese war records show that the Pickerel was depth charged off the coast of Japan. All hands lost. Married Elma Epps WATKINS on 15 Aug. 1935 in New London, Conn." [Family records, Edwin Barry Speth, III]
"On his second patrol of the war, Cdr Alston took the S-6 Pickerel to Honshu after refueling at Midway. He sortied from Pearl. On March 6, 1943 he left Midway bound for the empire of Japan and was never seen or heard from again. Postwar Japanese records indicate he and his crew were sunk by Japanese subchasers on April 3, 1943 after sinking a 1000 ton Jap freighter. There were no survivors. The Pickerel was the first Pearl boat to go down in 16 months....There is a memorial to the Submarine Service, which had the highest casualty rate of any branch during the war, in Pearl. It lists all the U.S. subs lost and the inscription simply states: "Still on Patrol" [Source: "Silent Victory" by Clay Blair Jr., April 1975, Bantam Books]
A second account of the USS Pickerel:
"She [the Pickerel] departed Pearl Harbor on 18 March 1943 and, after topping off with fuel and provisions at Midway Island on 22 March, headed for the eastern coast of northern Honshu- and was never heard from again. Pickerel was the first submarine to be lost in the Central Pacific area. She was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 19 August 1943.
Post-war analysis of Japanese records give conflicting suggestions about Pickerel's fate. The Japanese officially credit her with sinking Submarine Chaser Number 13 on 3 April and Fukuei Maru on 7 April, and give no official report of her destruction. Those records also describe an action off Shiramuka Lighthouse on northern Honshu- on 3 April 1943 in which naval aircraft first bombed an unidentified submarine, then directed Shiragami and Bunzan Maru to the spot, where they dropped twenty-six depth charges. A large quantity of oil floated to the surface, which was often enough for Japanese ASW ships to believe their target was sunk. It is likely Pickerel's fuel oil bunkers leaked. Since there were several other ASW operations in the area in that period, and Pickerel was the only American submarine in that area; one of these other attacks, sometime after 7 April, probably claimed her."
