Obituary for Carol Anderson, 1936 - 2010
Service: Tuesday, December 28, 2010 10:30 AM, Cross Point Assembly God Church
On Wednesday, December 22, 2010, Carol D. Anderson, of Spring Hill, went home to be with the Lord at the age of 74. She courageously battled pancreatic cancer for 16 months under the exceptional care of Dr. Singh and the staff at Research Medical Center.
Carol was born June 10, 1936, in Kansas City, Kansas. She was the loving daughter of Buford Edward and Mildred Bernice Shank Braly.
Carol's greatest joys came from her relationship with Jesus and from her pride in her family. Carol was a member of Cross Point Assembly of God Church in Paola at the time of her death and previously was a long-time member of Shawnee Church of the Nazarene, where she was the volunteer organist for over 25 years. She devoted much time to Bible study and prayer, often in the company of her many friends at church and with the assistance of her beloved pastors.
Carol is survived by her three daughters, Denise Sprague of Spring Hill, Liz (Ted) Lockhart of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Jenny (Jim) Adkins of Paola; sister, Elaine (Ken) Matson, of Panama City, Florida; grandchildren Mike Sprague and Kayla (Jeff) Morris of Spring Hill; grandchildren TC, Nicholas, Madelynne and Annabella Lockhart of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren Alec, Cody, Julia, Caroline and Katherine Adkins of Paola; niece Kristine (Michael) King of Mobile, Alabama; nephew Neil (Jill) Matson of Panama City, Florida; and three great grandchildren and three great nieces and nephews.
Carol was preceded in death by her husband of twenty years, Willard G. Anderson.
She worked for Browning Motors for many years before joining her son-in-law and staff at the State Farm Office in Paola as a receptionist, greeting and helping customers for over 7 years.
Carol loved playing the piano, reading the Bible, raising and showing Afghan Hounds, growing roses and watching football on television. She was devoted to her family and friends and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Services are Tuesday, December 28, 10:30 a.m. at Cross Point Church in Paola and arrangements were handled by Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home in Paola. Memorials may be made to the Miami County Chapter of the American Cancer Society or Cross Point Assembly of God Church in Carol's honor.

General Notes: Husband - William D. ANDREWS

W. D. ANDREWS, county treasurer, is a native of Barbour county and son of Dr. W. and Martha (Daniel) Andrews, and was born November 19, 1855. His early educational training embraced the studies usually taught in the common schools, and subsequently, in 1877, he took a full course in Eastman's Business college at Poughkeepsie, N. Y., receiving his diploma the latter part of that year. In 1878 he began farming in Barbour county, but two years later relinquished agricultural pursuits and engaged in merchandising, which he continued about two years and then disposed of his stock and accepted a position as bookkeeper with B. B. Conner at Harris. He was thus employed till 1891, at which time he resigned the position and became railroad agent at Harris. In addition to, his duties as agent, Mr. Andrews is extensively engaged in farming, and is also administrator of the large estate of his father, which consisted of 3,000 acres of land owned jointly with B. B. Conner, and 1,500 acres belonging exclusively to the Andrews family. Mr. Andrews has been a leading politician of Barbour county for some years, but not until recently would he permit the use of his name for any official position. At the earnest solicitation of his many friends he offered himself, in the spring of 1891, as candidate for the office of county treasurer, and such was his popularity that he was complimented by receiving the nomination on the first ballot by a very flattering majority. Mr. Andrews is deservedly popular with the people of Barbour county, and is certainly a businessman of superior sagacity. He is a member of Ebenezer lodge, No. 210, F. & A. M., and also to the Pythian order. His wife, Lena Boyer, daughter of George Boyer, whom he married on the 25th of April, 1888, has borne him two children : Ernestine and Rhett. Dr. Andrews' father was born in Wilkes county, Ga., in the year 1819. He graduated from the medical department of the Pennsylvania university, began the practice at Eufaula, Ala., in 1841, and followed the profession there till 1859, at which time located in the vicinity of Spring-Hill. He married his first wife, Martha Daniel, in 1842, and by her became the father of several children, but one of whom, W. D. Andrews, is living. Mrs. Andrews died in 1856, and three years later the doctor took to wife Laura Wilson, who bore him three children, two of whom are living at this time, namely : Eloise, wife of G. W. Grant; Eva, attending school at Huntsville, and Alfred, a student of an educational institution at the town of Midway, Ala. Dr. Andrews was a prominent member of the Methodist church and for many years exerted a powerful influence for good in the community. He departed this life in August, 1881. [Additional Comments: from "Memorial Record of Alabama" (Author: Brant & Fuller, 1893)]

On 19 May 1891, W. D. ANDREWS was included as an heir to the estate of James L. DANIEL under "The Heirs of Martha ANDREWS, Barbour County, Ala." in a filing to the Barbour County, Alabama Probate Court.

General Notes: Husband - Rev. John Thomas DANIELL, CSA

John Thomas DANIELL, born in Baldwin County, Georgia on 6 July 1820, was the third son of Jesse DANIELL and Mary A. TUCKER. His date of birth was part of the Family Record "from the Holy Bible printed in 1816" copied into his mother's 1878 Widow's Pension Application and certified to the court to be genuine by Daniel R. TUCKER, an officer of the court and Mary's brother. As with all of Jesse's descendants, John' surname evolved to DANIEL as he grew older.

John Thomas is the younger of the two males "under 10" listed in Jesse DANIELL's household in the 1820 census. John Thomas' name may honor two men, John DANIEL, who raised Jesse as an orphan, and John L. THOMAS, about Jesse's age, who lived two homes away from Jesse in 1820.

John and Lucinda DANIEL are named in 1850 in the household of Thomas & Evilina ANGLE, Lucinda's parents in Muscogee County, Georgia. Later censuses show that John Thomas was a farmer and a Methodist minister of the gospel.

The marriage certificate accompanying the Indigent widow's pension appliaction of Lucinda Daniel [sic] records that John Thomas DANNELL (sic) married Lucinda ANGLE on Sept 8, 1850 in Muscogee Co. Georgia.

In the November 1881, settlement of the estate of John Thomas' mother, Mary A. DANIEL, in Baldwin County, Georgia, Thomas DANIEL is named as an heir, whereabouts not known, but he was in Tallapoosa County, Alabama according to census information. His share of the estate and that of his brother James was entrusted to Samuel W. DAVIS, administrator, "until the same is claimed or demanded by them or until further order of said court." Samuel was Thomas' nephew, son of his sister, Martha Ann DANIELL, wife of William A. DAVIS. It is not known if John Thomas ever collected his $29.80.

Between 1880 and 1900, John Thomas moved back into Georgia, ostensibly to Heard and Carroll counties. Both bordering Coweta County from which he'd earlier moved.

"John T. Daniel said in his civil war pension application in 1897 (filed in Heard County, Georgia) that he was born July 6, 1820 in Bladwin [sic, Baldwin] County, Georgia. The 1820 Baldwin County census lists his father, Jesse Daniel. Lucinda, wife of John T. Daniel, says in her widow's civil war pension application in 1905 that he died in Troup Co., Georgia on April 21, 1905. She filed for the pension while living in Troup Co. Georgia. She was noted to be 80 years old in 1905. Rev. J. T. Daniel 1819 - ____ (no death date given). Did not see Lucinda his wife listed. He is buried at Hill View Cemetery in LaGrange, Troup County, Georgia. Lucinda was 82 years old in 1907 in Troup Co. GA when she reapplied for her pension and that was the last record in the file for her." (Re: John T . By 1900, they had returned to Georgia, living in Lowell, Carroll County.

Philip T. Raiford is buried in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Forrest City, St. Francis County, Arkansas. Find A Grave Memorial# 23371325 ;lists his birth on May 13, 1838 and his death on Sep. 8, 1902. It presents this obituary:
ANSWERED THE CALL - One by one the old Confederates answer the roll call. Last Monday, Sep.8, 1902, when the great Captain called the name of P. T. Raiford, he answered as promptly as of yore, and his spirit passed away to a happier life. Squire Raiford was well known in St. Francis county, and was 61? years of age and came to this county ten years ago from Byhalia, Miss., and had been elected several times as magistrate of Madison township. He was a member of the 17th Mississippi Infantry, and served gallantly throughout the Civil war. As a citizen, the Squire was among the best; as a companion none held a closer place among his friends. He was a member of the N. B. Forrest Camp Confederates No.623, and was foremost in furthering the cause of the old soldier. The Squire had been feeble for two years, and had been taken to Memphis for treatment, and despite all the medical community attempted, he passed away at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. Ike Mallory. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. G. N. Laughinghouse and Mrs. Ike Mallory and a son in Memphis, to mourn his loss. The remains were interred in the Mt.Vernon cemetery Tuesday morning under the auspices of the Masonic lodge, Rev. H. W. Dyer of the Methodist church officiating, assisted by Rev. J. J. Cornish of the Episcopal church. When all the ceremonies were completed, his old companions in arms gathered around the grave, while the bugler of the camp played "Taps". Circuit clerk adjourned for the burial of the Squre, and attended the burial. Forrest City Times Newspaper, Sep. 12, 1902.

The family burying ground of John COCKEY, Jr., is situated on the old tavern property of Stephen COCKEY, on the east side of the Falls road where it crosses Green Spring valley, to the right of the field road beyond the orchard. Inscriptions found here are: ...
To the left of the field road beyond the orchard we find:
Fell asleep in Jesus October 4th, 1864 Julia Ann Beloved wife of Thomas Armacost, I the 57th year of her age.
None know her but to love her
None named her but to praise
Farewell Mother, we thy loss deplore
The time was short the pain was great thou bore
But Jesus sent his Angels from the skies
A bore thy spirit up where pleasure never dies."

General Notes: Husband - Elijah Leroy DANIELL

Elijah L. DANIELL, age 5, son of Robert Tucker DANIELL and Mary J. KINNEY, is named in the 1860 census of Wilkinson County, Georgia. In 1870, Elijah is named as Eliza, 15, a daughter of Robert and Mary, still in Wilkinson County, Georgia.

Elijah first married Betty, maiden name unknown, before 1879. Their daughter, Lizzie, was born in May 1880. There is a marriage record for a "DANIEL ELIJAH [to] STINSON JENNIE 5 May 1872 " in Troup County, Georgia.

1880 U.S. Census, Georgia, Pulaski County, Hawkinsville; Series: T9 Roll: 162 Page 301: Elijah DANIEL Self M Male W 26 GA Farm Laborer GA GA; Betty DANIEL Other M Female W 23 GA Keeping House GA GA; Lizzie DANIEL Dau S Female W 1M GA GA GA. (Family History Library Film 1254162 NA Film Number T9-0162 Page Number 301B) From this census, it is apparent that Elijah first married Betty, maiden name unknown, before 1880. Betty apparently died soon after Lizzie was born. This census indicated she was disabled, "Child bed" was her described condition.

Elijah married second Sarah "Sallie" Leone ARMSTRONG on 9 January 1884. The death certificate of their daughter Mary lists her mother as Sallie Louisa ARMSTRONG.

Elijha and Sarah's family, minus three children who died young, is listed in the 1900 U.S. Census, Georgia, Pulaski County, Walker; Series: T623 Roll: 217 Page: 124: 393 403 DANIELL Elijah L Head W M Jan 1855 45 M 16 GA GA GA Overseer; -- Sarah L. Son W M --- 1892 8 S GA GA GA At school; -- Mary Dau W F 1894 6 S GA GA GA; -- Robert T. Father W M Jan 1823 77 Wd GA GA GA. The second "L" in Elijah's surname appears to be written over an "S", perhaps an insistence on the spelling "DANIELL". Heritage Quest lists Elijah L. DANIELS in the 1900 census index.

Sarah and Elijah DANIELL both died in September 1906, Sarah on the 18th and Elijah before the end of the month. On 1 October 1906, Sarah's brother, Hugh ARMSTRONG, was appointed guardian of their three youngest children.

Elijah and Sarah are buried in the Evergreen Baptist Church Cemetery in Bleckley County, Georgia. His headstone provides only his name, "ELIJHA L. DANIELL SR." A picture of his headstone is on Find A Grave Memorial# 31593488 created by Marsha Allen Durrance on Nov 21, 2008.

The DANIELL family headstones in Bleckley County reveal a most interesting evolution of the surname within a single generation. Two sons are buried near Elijah Leroy DANIELL, Sr., in the Evergreen Baptist Church Cemetery, Elijah, Jr. as DANIELL and William Anderson as DANIELS, and a third son, Jesse D. as DANIEL, buried in the Antioch United Methodist Cemetery.

General Notes: Wife - Sallie Louisa ARMSTRONG

Sarah Leone ARMSTRONG was born 24 December 1867, a daughter of Isham Hand ARMSTRONG and Mary Jane WOODSON. She married Elijah Leroy DANIELL. The death certificate of their daughter Mary lists her mother as "Sallie Louisa ARMSTRONG."

The 1900 U.S. Census lists "-- Sarah L. Wife W F 1872 28 M 16 7 4 GA NC GA" indicates that Sarah was married at age 12 and had 2 children before age 16, possibly a third. Exceptionally questionable. The 1880 census of Pulaski County, Georgia, lists the family of Isham ARMSTRONG including son, Hugh, 18, and daughter, Sallie (Sarah), 14, born circa 1866, not 1872, showing Sallie was about 18 when she married Elijha.

Sarah and Elijah DANIELL both died in September 1906. In 1910, their three youngest children are living in the home of their uncle and guardian, Hugh F. ARMSTRONG, in Pulaski County.

Sarah Armstrong DANIEL is buried in the Evergreen Baptist Church Cemetery in Bleckley County, Georgia. A small headstone provides only her name, "SALLIE A. DANIELL". Note that her nickname "Sallie", not her given name of Sarah was used on the stone; the "A." is for her maiden surname Armstrong.
