Find A Grave Memorial# 125322819 records Walter's burial in Section A East, Minden City Cemetery, Minden, Webster Parish, Louisiana. The memorial presents this obituary:

Popular Dentist Passes Away
At an early hour Saturday morning, Dr. Walter H. Spann died of pneumonia. He was stricken several days previous with a case of influenza, which finally developed into pneumonia which proved fatal in spite of all that medical skill and tender nursing could do for him. His body was laid to rest in the family burying ground on Cemetery Hill on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. In the death of Dr. Spann, Minden loses one of her most loyal citizens who has lived here since the date of his birth forty-seven years ago. This was always his home. He was born and educated in Minden, which to him was the garden spot of the earth; and here he died, as he had lived, surrounded by the friends of his early childhood. In his chosen profession of dentistry, Dr. Spann attained a high degree of efficiency and skill, which was the pride of his ambition and the subject of unstinted praise on the part of his friends. Possessed of a gentle and sympathetic nature, he was ever kind and indulgent to others. It is not believed that he ever harbored an unkind thought toward anyone. He was at peace with the world, and sunshine and gladness radiated from his heart with a natural glow as he lived and labored among his fellowmen. His face is hidden from us but the charm of his friendly greetings will linger with us for years to come. [The Webster Signal

Biography/obituary:
October 16, 2013
Samuel R. Spencer Jr., a former president and alumnus of Davidson College whose active association with the institution spanned almost 80 years, died on Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013. He was 94 years old.
Spencer's scholarship and courtly manners were supported by a keen sense of diplomacy, a kind sense of humor and an uncanny ability to remember names going back to his earliest Davidson days. As president from 1968 to 1983, those attributes helped him successfully manage some of the most challenging changes in the college's history.
"Sam Spencer was, in a single word, a giant. He was a man of visionary leadership at a pivotal time in the life of Davidson College," said President Carol Quillen. "For me, as for so many in the college family and far beyond, he was a ready exemplar of attributes we need most in the world today. He was a man of grace, of humility and of quiet and unwavering moral courage. I join with the college family in boundless gratitude for his life so well lived."
During Spencer's presidency, Davidson witnessed the introduction of co-education, the active recruitment and admission of minority students, the establishment of a self-selection social system for fraternities, a reevaluation of the college's relationship with the Presbyterian Church and student unrest over the Vietnam War. Through it all, Spencer led a new emphasis on faculty research, more and deeper foreign study opportunities for students and an increase in the college's endowment from $13.8 million to $30 million. Enrollment during his tenure increased from 1,000 to 1,350.
The major building project of Spencer's administration was the E.H. Little Library, which opened in 1974. He also approved student creation of WDAV as a carrier-current student radio station in 1969, and led its evolution toward a classical music format and professional operation beginning in 1978.
Sam Spencer and classmates
In 2010 Spencer and 1940 classmates Jack Ferguson, Don Hott, Elmer Hulen, Gales McClintock, and B.B. Plyler gathered on campus to celebrate their 70th reunion.
"Sam has been a personal role model for me since 1955, when I was a naďve freshman and he was Davidson's dean of students," said President Emeritus John W. Kuykendall '59 (1984-97). "The fears I felt because of the nature of his job were quickly eclipsed by the warmth of his caring presence among us. Brilliant but approachable, principled but sensitive to others, tough but gentle: Sam Spencer has been Davidson's ‘man for all seasons.'"
Hansford Epes '61 also lauded Spencer's leadership in the context of rapidly changing times.
"President Spencer recognized that Davidson had a larger role to play than the one with which we had become somewhat comfortable," said Registrar Emeritus and Professor Emeritus of German and Humanities Epes. "He took on almost all constituencies at one time or another in order to do what he believed to be right-a determination that has been to the college's immeasurable benefit."
"It is not President Spencer the educator with all its accompanying accolades that stirs our deepest appreciation," declared a Trustee resolution at the time of his retirement from the presidency. "His modesty, his sense of loyalty to those who work closely with him, his limitless patience with our foibles and failures, call forth our most sincere gratitude. He will reward his most vociferous critic more quickly than his closest friend if he believes he deserves it. It is loathsome for him to speak ill of anyone. Nevertheless, to be Sam Spencer's friend is to possess a gift of real value. When he is among friends, his wit sparkles, the stories tumble forth, the laughter can even become raucous and the warmth is enveloping.... We are drawn to trust him and to praise him finally because when he is convinced the cause is right and in Davidson's best interest, he is willing to make the tough decision, take the heat and never waiver. Finally and supremely, he is a man of courage who can discriminate between the sublime and the trivial."
Sam Spencer
Sam and Ava Spencer in 1997.
Born in 1919 in Rock Hill, S.C., Spencer spent much of his youth in Columbia, S.C. He enrolled as a Davidson student with the Class of 1940, and had an outstanding career inside and outside the classroom. He was elected president of the student body and graduated as a Phi Beta Kappa summa cum laude history major, as well as salutatorian. He was a proud member of Davidson's inaugural soccer team. He also served as cadet major and executive officer of the ROTC Corps. He was commissioned into the Army infantry in 1940 soon after graduation. ROTC assigned him to teach military science at Davidson to student cadets until 1943. He served in 1944-45 in Europe as an intelligence officer with the Eighth Air Force. At the end of World War II he was released from active duty as a major.
He then entered Harvard University graduate school, where he earned master's and doctoral degrees in history. At Harvard, he met Ava Clark, whom he married in Abingdon, Va., in 1948. In 1951, Spencer returned to Davidson to serve as assistant to President John R. Cunningham. After three years, he was named dean of students and associate professor of history, advancing to full professor in 1955.
Spencer left Davidson in 1957 to become president of Mary Baldwin College. He positioned Mary Baldwin as a "college within a community," inspired the construction of several major campus buildings and nurtured study abroad programs and exchanges in Spain, France, England and India. His presidency there was aptly nicknamed "bulldozers, steam shovels and academic excellence" by a campus historian. In 2007 Mary Baldwin honored his service with dedication of the Samuel R. Jr. and Ava Spencer Center for Civic and Global Engagement, a major resource for community service learning and international opportunities.
Spencer received an honorary doctor of law degree from Davidson in 1964, and in 1965-66 he was a Fulbright Lecturer at the University of Munich in Germany. From 1966 until 1968, he served on Davidson's Board of Trustees, and in 1968 he accepted the call to become the college's 14th president. It soon became evident that he intended to lead Davidson into national prominence, and his unrelenting and single-minded pursuit of excellence was as legendary as his volleys on the tennis court.
President Jimmy Carter appointed Spencer to the Board of Foreign Scholarships, which oversees the Fulbright Program for the United States, and he served as its chair in 1982. He provided leadership in many higher education associations-the North Carolina Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, the Southern University Conference, Southern Association of Colleges for Women, the Council of Presidents, Association of Governing Boards and the Commission on Government Relations of the American Council on Education. He also served as a member and chair of the Board of Directors for the Association of American Colleges. At the end of his Davidson tenure in 1983, he was elected president of the Virginia Foundation of Independent Colleges, and held that position until 1988. In 1990 he served as interim president of Hollins College during a presidential search at that institution.
In the mid-80s, a women's eating house on Davidson's Patterson Court was named to honor Spencer's leadership as the president who championed coeducation. The Davidson College ROTC program inducted Spencer in 1989 as one of the first eight members of its Hall of Fame. He served as a member of Davidson's Board of Visitors and as chair of the Board of Trustees of Union Theological Seminary in Richmond. He and his wife, Ava, continued to live in Davidson after his retirement as president, and Spencer served as consultant to the college's development office.
Spencer is survived by his wife, Ava Clark Spencer; son S. "Reid" Spencer III (Candice Coffee Spencer) of Davidson; daughter Ellen Spencer Henschen (Gary Mayes Henschen '70) of Atlanta, Ga.; daughter Ava "Clayton" Spencer of Lewiston, Maine; Frank C. Spencer (Melanie D. Spencer) of Charlotte; grandchildren Samuel Reid Spencer IV '07, James C. Spencer, Elizabeth Blakeney Henschen, Sam Henschen, Josef Henschen, Will Carter, Ava Clayton Carter, Aly Spencer, Clark Spencer; and great grandson Spencer Henschen.
Sam and Ava Spencer's legacy of college leadership lives on in their daughter, Ava Clayton Spencer, who was inaugurated as the eighth president of Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, on Oct. 26, 2012. In her inaugural address, Clayton Spencer gave an emotional acknowledgement to her parents, holding up her cap and explaining that Sam Spencer had worn it both as president of Mary Baldwin College and of Davidson College.
Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. at the Davidson College Presbyterian Church on Monday, Oct. 21 with a reception to follow in the Lilly Family Gallery in the Chambers Building. [http://davidson.edu/news/news-stories/131016-college-family-mourns-passing-of-president-emeritus]

Obituary: Davidson NC - Samuel Reid Spencer Jr.'s tenure as the 14th president of Davidson College spanned a tumultuous period of change. Davidson had just opened its doors to blacks in 1968 when Spencer arrived. Four years later, the all-male school went co-ed. Spencer died Wednesday at the Pines in Davidson. He was 94. "The single most important thing about Sam was bringing co-education to Davidson," said Tony Abbott, professor emeritus at the college. "A lot of the faculty members were opposed to co-education. It was a struggle, but Sam turned it around and made Davidson the place it is today." "Dr. Spencer was always a step ahead of us, kindly and gently," said former Charlottean D.G. Martin, now the host of UNC-TV's "North Carolina Bookwatch" in Chapel Hill. Spencer followed Martin's father, Grier Martin, as president of the college. "When we moved to Davidson, my parents fell in love with the Spencers," Martin said. "All I heard was 'Sam and Ava. Sam and Ava.' My father had enormous respect for Sam's experience and judgment." When illness prompted Grier Martin to leave the presidency, Martin says Spencer "made it possible for my father \endash who was less and less capable of participating \endash to continue to be part of the college family." Spencer left Davidson in 1983 to become president of the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges in Richmond. John Kuykendall then took the helm. Kuykendall vividly remembered Spencer's "graciousness and openness about everything here.""We had talked very frankly about some very difficult circumstances," Kuykendall said. "Then he said to me, 'As you go into the presidency, I will answer any question you ask, and I won't answer any question you don't ask.' That was such a wise statement and meant such absolute openness," Kuykendall said. "That was liberating all around." Born June 6, 1919, in Rock Hill, the son of Samuel Reid Spencer and Mary Thomson Spencer, Spencer grew up in Columbia, S.C. At Davidson College, he headed the student body, served as managing editor of the student newspaper and graduated Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude in 1940 with a B.A. degree in English. He served five years in the U.S. Army and was released from active duty as a major. After a summer's study at UCLA, he entered graduate school at Harvard University and earned a PhD in American social history. During that time, he married Ava Clayton Clark of Abingdon, Va. In 1951, he returned to Davidson as assistant to President John Cunningham. Three years later, he was named dean of students. By 1955, he was full professor of history. That year, Little, Brown published Spencer's book: "Booker T. Washington and the Negro's Place in American Life." Says former Davidson student Bill Jackson, who worked in the administration of president John F. Kennedy: "Under Dr. Spencer, I had one of the most influential, substantive courses of my undergraduate and graduate academic life \endash American diplomatic history." Spencer left Davidson in 1957 to become president of Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Va. "He did a magnificent job at Mary Baldwin," Kuykendall said. "When Grier Martin left the presidency, it was a no-brainer to ask Sam to come back and be president." During his tenure, Davidson's endowment grew from $13.8 million to $30 million, and enrollment increased from 1,000 to 1,350. He spearheaded the construction of the E. H. Little Library, which opened in 1974 and encouraged the expansion of study-abroad programs. Disturbed by the "growing exclusivism" of campus fraternities, he supported a "self-selection" system in which students could choose their affiliations. He also championed civil rights, pushing for increased recruitment of minority students and faculty at Davidson. For these efforts, he was recognized with the Whitney M. Young Jr. Award from the Urban League of Central Carolinas. While at Davidson, Spencer served as chairman of the Association of American Colleges and was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to the U.S. Board of Foreign Scholarships. In 1964, Davidson awarded him an honorary doctor of laws degree, and the following year he was Fulbright lecturer in American social history at the University of Munich in Germany. "I had a much easier time being president of this college because Sam was president before I was," Kuykendall said. "He paved the way. He laid the groundwork." The Spencers returned to Davidson in 1989. Sam Spencer, in addition to playing rigorous tennis, served on the boards of directors of Davidson College, Mary Baldwin, Agnes Scott in Atlanta, Warren Wilson in Swannanoa and Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond."Dad had an unassailable sense of right and wrong," said son Reid Spencer. "But in what is an almost impossibly rare combination, he was open to any and all points of view, was relentlessly tolerant of others' failings and never, ever spoke ill of another human being." Spencer is survived by his wife Ava, and his children Samuel Reid Spencer III and wife Candice of Davidson; Ellen Henschen and husband Gary of Atlanta; Clayton Spencer of Lewiston, Maine; and Frank Spencer and wife Melanie of Charlotte, as well as nine grandchildren and one great-grandson.- Dannye Romine Powell.
