The local paper ran an article about Toney the week after he died which I will share with you. She described Toney so well. ARTICLE BY BONNELL HOLMES in her column - Thru My Window - Quitman Free Press, Sept. 12, 2007 - entitled LAUGHTER FROM THE HEART - It takes a special person to make someone laugh. It is said that laughter is the best medicine, it invigorates the mind and eases stress. Toney Shiver was a person who could make you laugh. From his colorful comments calling a Brooks County Trojans game to his portrayal of a Blues Brother, he had a knack for the zany and off-beat. It is especially sad when one so full of fun and life has his own life snuffed out before his time. Toney Shiver died of a massive heart attack September 2. Toney gave of himself to his work as director of the Quitman Housing Authority making sure his tenants were treated fairly. He also worked hard in the Kiwanis Club promoting a lot of good projects for Quitman and Brooks County. If there was a need for an MC, for a fundraiser or worthy cause, you could count on Toney. How many of us are that generous with our time. Toney often came into the Free Press wearing a big smile and acting as if the world was his oyster. I never heard him complain. One can picture him going down Screven Street headed for a local restaurant. He did like to eat and appreciated good food. This man about town will be missed by those who knew him, either as a close friend or acquaintance. His love of life was contagious spreading to all he came in contact with, whether at the post office, ball game, Kiwanis Club, church, Housing Authority or any place there was a gathering of people. Perhaps Toney is now up in heaven with the angels planning a big production, complete with costumes. His laughter resounds in the minds and hearts of all those who knew and loved him. Break a leg Toney!

Toney always called me "Sister" and I am going to miss that. But life goes on and I have the comfort of knowing that he is with our Lord and Savior now - and having a grand reunion with Mother. I will be with them by and by. Lyrice Shiver McCranie (email:: lsm1043@planttel.net, To: SHIVER-L@rootsweb.com)
