"On the breaking out of the great Civil war, with all the enthusiasm of youth and patriotism, he rallied to the defense of his country's flag, enlisting in Company B, Fiftieth Volunteer Infantry, on August 20, 1861, and serving until the close of the war. The most important engagements in which he participated were the siege of Corinth, Shiloh, Corinth and Resaca. In January, 1864, he re-enlisted or veteranized, and was given a furlough of thirty days. After the battle of Resaca, at Rome, Georgia, he was placed on detached duty in the Commissary Department of General Sherman's army, where he continued until cessation of hostilities. He was honorably discharged with his regiment at Springfield, Illinois, on July 14, 1865." General Notes: Wife - Virginia Lynn SHAW

Obituary: Virginia Shaw Stanley, 91, died Tuesday, September 5, 2006, in Tupelo, Mississippi after a brief illness. This beautiful Southern Belle, a true lady of grace, was born July 7, 1915, in Red Bay, Alabama to Charles Garvin Shaw and Myrtle Alice Copeland Shaw.
Virginia moved to Tupelo with her parents when she was in elementary school. Her education included Tupelo Public School system, Vanderbilt University, Ward-Belmont College, and Washington D. C. Conservatory of Music. Those early years were filled with great excitement: dance cotillions, piano and voice recitals and duets, and professional singing which included solos and duets throughout the state. Virginia Lynn Shaw was crowned Miss Tupelo in 1932, May Queen at Ward-Belmont College in 1935, and Red Cross Service Volunteer "Float Queen in 1940.
During her early married years, her interests and passions centered around numerous volunteer service clubs, most of which she was a charter member. Her love of music shone through her work with Tupelo Community Concert Association and the Fortnightly Musicale. As a member of the Tupelo Junior Auxiliary, she spent countless but rewarding hours improving the welfare of our communitys childrens needs. Throughout the years she displayed her artistic abilities through the Tupelo Garden Club. She took pride in being a first-class homemaker.
The Shepherd Center, of which she was a charter member, gave her great satisfaction as an "older person helping older people.
Looking back on all these years, nothing gave her greater fulfillment than her love for her family, her church, her friends, and neighbors. There were many high points of her church life: She spent more than 50 years in the choir program. She orchestrated and co-chaired the Altar Guilds project for the needlepoint prayer rail and pastors chairs. Her children and close friends felt comfort, strength and hope because of her powerful prayer life. In her later years, her favorite church contribution was sending 40 or more cards per month to those grieving or celebrating.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, September 8, 2006, in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church. Rev. Andy Ray, Rev. Hershel Wiygul, and Dr. Rev. Prentiss Gordon will be officiating a service on scriptures of hope, grace, and the celebration of Virginia's faith. The Chancel Choir under the direction of Beverly Clement will present beautiful and heartwarming musical arrangements. The service will also include piano and organ duets as a tribute to Virginias own musical career. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery. Afterward, family and friends are invited to the churchs Gathering Room for refreshments.
Survivors include one son, Watt H. Daniel, III; one daughter, Alice Virginia Daniel; one grandson, James Carl Vail, Jr., all of Tupelo.; one step-daughter, Judi and Richard Bearden, of Peachtree City, Ga.; one stepson and wife, Drs. Ken and Barbara Stanley of Valdosta, Ga. ; four step-grandsons, Stan Bearden and wife, Amy, Brian Stanley, Eric Stanley and wife, Lisa, and Patrick Stanley; three step-great-grandchildren, Miles, Emily, and Madeline; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Daniel of Arlington, Va., and her children, Tom, Ann, Louise, and Mary Nellis; a nephew, Bill Hightower and wife, Nancy, of Athens, Ala.; a niece, Nell Hightower Cobb and husband, Howard, of Manakin-Sabot, Va.; a cousin, Doris Cole and family of Red Bay, Ala., and numerous nieces and nephews from Boston to Hawaii.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Watt Henry Daniel, Jr., and his parents, Watt Sr., and Nellis Daniel; her second husband, Herman S. Stanley; her sisters-in-law, Sarah Daniel, and Louise Daniel Hightower and husband, Baylis; and brother-in-law, Charles David Daniel.
Pallbearers will be David Sparks, David Anthony, Scotty Yarborough, Buddy McCarty, Bill Stroup, Robin Faucette, Dr. Harold Hudson, Walter Clyde Rhodes, Guy Mitchell, III, and Adrian Thompson.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Mrs. Wade Lagrone, Dr. Eugene Murphry and his nurse Elaine, Brenda Swords, Mrs. Maurine Vail, Reverend and Mrs. E.S. Furr, The Wesley Fellowship Sunday School Class, the Discovery Circle, and the many, many best friends from throughout her life and until the end. Thank you.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 412 W. Main St., Tupelo, MS 38804, or to the charity of the donors choice.

General Notes: Husband - James SHIRLEY

James SHIRLEY was born February 24, 1768 in Frederick County, Virginia, and died January 16, 1840 in Charles Town, Jefferson County, West Virginia. He married (1) Ruth HIATT March 05, 1793 in Berkeley County, (West) Virginia, daughter of John HIATT. She was born April 30, 1756, and died April 1817 in Charles Town, (West) Virginia. He married (2) Matilda VINSON December 26, 1821 in Frederick County, Virginia. She was born 1795 in Montgomery County, Maryland, and died September 17, 1855 in Jefferson County (West) Virginia.
James SHIRLEY's Will is recorded in Jefferson County, West Virginia, Will Book 9, Page 409. In it he gives his wife Matilda one third of his estate "both real and personal," stipulating that after her death her Dower was then to be equally divided between his sons Robert, George William, and Thomas Lee. The remaining two thirds of his holdings were distributed to sons Robert, George and Thomas. At his death James SHIRLEY owned numerous tracts of land amounting to considerable acreage. A Plat of some of James' extensive holdings may be found in Will Book Book 24, Page 309, of Jefferson County. James gave his sons several slaves by name. All other slaves not named in the Will were to be equally divided among them (in an estate accounting all are named). James did will that "my yellow boy named James RUST shall be free at the age of twenty one years at which time my executor hereafter named shall out of my estate furnish him with two good suits of clothes of good quality, and twenty five dollars in cash." In the accounting of the estate the cost of Mr. Rust's two suits of clothing came to $57.54 (W.B. 10, p. 11). To his daughter, Mary HURST, he gave "two Negroes by name Jerry and Lucy," and $1,000.00 cash.
