General Notes: Husband - Rev. Richard SANKEY

Richard SANKEY is of interest because of a possible connection to the SANKEY line through the wife or wives of James O'DANIEL (DANIELL/L) of Fairfax County, Virginia.

From "Caveliers and Pioneers," p. 168, Patent Book No., 6 (VA): MR. THO. MEAD. 640 acs., New Kent Co., N. side of Mattapony Riv., upon branches of Peanketank maine Sw., about 2 mi. from Mr. Tho. HOLMES; 6 Oct. 1675, p. 570. On Timber Br., along lland of Johnn PICC & Jno. MADDISON. Granted to Cornelius REYNOLDS 6 June 1664, assigned to Richd. SANKEY, who assigned to sd. MEAD. 8 Jan 1673."

Rev. Richard Sankey (b. pre 1715-1788) - "Richard Sankey, a theological student from Ireland, was taken under the care of the Presbytery of Donegal (Western Pennsylvania) in 1731. In 1737 he was called to the Hanover Congregation <prespres.htm> and was ordained August, 1738. In 1756, the entire region was greatly harrassed by Indian wars and in 1757, with a great part of his congregation, he settled on Buffalo Creek, in Prince Edward County, Virginia. Buffalo Church is one of the oldest churches in the Prince Edward region, and near the church for a long time was a trading place called 'Londonderry.' Richard Sankey lived to be an old man, dying a few months before the organization of the Synod of Virginia in 1788-- he had been designated the first moderator. In 1775, Richard Sankey was of the first Board of Trustees of Hampden Sydney Academy <Presinst.htm>. It is recorded that he like to use Hebrew in the pulpit. He was the son-in-law of the Rev. John Thompson <Presbiot.htm> (no compromise Old School man), who while settled in the territory of Prince Edward County, composed in 1748 the earliest book to come out of that territory, "An Explication of the Shorter Catechism." John Sankey, the son of Richard Sankey [see Prince Edward County Will Books] was likely a minister himself. It is probably he spent his life in the South. In 1827 Richard T[hompson] Sankey of Georgia graduated in medicine at the University of Pennsylvania." (http://mal.net/EarlyPresbyterians/presbios.htm)

"The author of the petitions is not identified. One theory is that the Rev. Richard Sankey wrote both petitions. He had been the pastor of a Presbyterian Church in Hanover Township, Lancaster [now Dauphin] County, Pennsylvania. His church was located near Manada Gap used by Indian raiders to reach exposed frontier settlements and in 1758 Sankey and many of his parishioners moved to the relative safety of North Carolina. Pastor and people moved again the following year to Prince Edward County, Virginia. His migrations would fit the situation described in the petitions. Whoever wrote it, someone took it to all ten of the centers of Scotch-Irish settlement that the petitions identified as congregations without pastors. It took considerable organization to garner 800 signatures in the backcountry." (http://www.electricscotland.com/familytree/magazine/decjan2003/ulster_roots.htm)

Searching for the parents of Margaret Calhoun who married Giles William Sankey, April 1748, Wilmington, New Castle Del., Holy Trinity or Old Sweedes Church. Any info sincerely appreciated. Known children of this couple: Martha Sankey, Lydia Sankey, William Sankey.--Were there others? Lydia Sankey, daughter of Giles and Margaret Calhoun Sankey. Other known children: Martha, born about 1755, who married "Jipe" Sturgeon, and William Sankey. Appreciate adding any other info, available! "Rev. Richard Sankey, and thirty-five families moved from Paxtang Pennsylvania to Buffaloe River, Prince Edward Co., Virginia in the summer of 1759. A series of Indian raids and massacres, which took the lives of fourteen members of his congregation was the main reason for the migration. On October 9, 1759 he purchased 400 acres adjacent to Robert Baker's. He was the author of The Petition of Sundry Inhabitants of Prince Edward County to the President and House of Delegates of Virginia dated October 11, 1776 praying for complete religious and civil liberty and pledging loyalty to the government of the United States." This John T. had a son John T. who died in Alabama. He married two times, Margaret Towns and Patience Stephens. One known child, Annie. This John T had a nephew John T. who lived and died in Alabama. He was married to Rebecca Holt Daniel and also was an M. D. I am told he served briefly in the Confederate Army but I have not found any evidence. "Miss Rosalie Savano Is Married To Mr. Eugene Lawrence Here In Sunday Church Ceremony
Miss Rosalie Savano and Mr. Eugene Lawrence of this city are spending their honeymoon at Santa Cruz following their wedding last Sunday in St. John's Catholic Church here.
The bride's father, Mr Charles Savano. gave her in marriage and her cousins, Miss Rosalie Savano and Miss Genevieve Savano were bridesmaids. The best man was Elton O'Neal. Vincent Savano was usher.
The bride wore a white organza dress with leg-o-mutton sleeves and a tight fitted bodice. There were small covered buttons down the back of the dress. The skirt was full, with a long train and she carried calla lilies.
The bridesmaids wore white organdie skirts with jersey tops and two organdie ruffles around the skirt. Miss Rosalie Savano carried pink sweet peas and Miss Genevieve Savano carried blue delphiniums.
A delightful reception followed at the Alta Heights home of the bride's parents. The couple is expected to return here in about a week. They will make their home at 51 Franklin street in Napa.
The bride's mother wore a pink dress with a long sleeved jacket and the groom's mother wore a blue dress with matching accessories.
Miss Savano is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Savano and was graduated from the Napa Union High school with the class of 1938. She originally came here from San Francisco. She was active in high school in the Girl's Athletic Association. She is the sister of Arthur, Vincent and Leo Savano. She is employed locally.
Mr. Lawrence is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Lawrence of Concord and came from there. He attended Concord schools and is the brother of Norbert Kirk and Elizabeth Lawrence. He is employed in Napa." General Notes: Husband - George THOMAS

George THOMAS was born 4 January 1771. In the Thomas Family Bible transcription published in the Lewis County Herald newspaper it is given as: "George Thomas was born January 4, 1779" with this corrective comment also in the text "George Thomas (1770-1834), our grandfather, who was born in 1771 (evidently an error of date)." (See General Notes for Charles W. THOMAS for the full article. RLD)

"My father returned to Kentucky and brought with him a copy of the old family Bible record written old style script on blue paper. During the war I made a copy of this for Aunt Amandy Montgomery. The original I could not find when I was home. Last year I wrote to Aunt Lizzie Montgomery and find she has the copy I made and here it is:

The above Charles was the son of George W. Thomas (born 1822) and was a first cousin to GMT and was writing to inform GMT about their (western) branch of the Thomas family. GMT would have been 80 years old when he received the letter. Charles would have been around 60 years old, according to some dates in the letter -- he said he left Kentucky in 1858 when he was nine years old" provided to the Lewis County Herald by Gary L. Cain, of Sandy, Utah)

The below is from The Thomas Trail, compiled by Bud Thomas:
"George THOMAS- (proven by will) George THOMAS was born on January 4, 1771 in Culpepper County, Virginia. He moved to Kentucky with his parents and married Levina SCHULL in 1800. He moved with her to Lewis County, Kentucky. Levina SCHULL was the daughter of Joseph and Levina SCHULL. This Levina was one of the women who gathered water at Bryan's Station prior to the Indian attack of 1782 (see story below). George THOMAS died December 31, 1832 in Lewis County, Kentucky. He is said to have been a soldier in the War of 1812. George and Levina had children: Sarah, b. 15 Mar 1802, Elijah Hart ("E.H."), b. 3 Mar 1804, Rachel, b. 3 Apr 1806, Sidney, b. 29 Apr 1808, Nancy, b. 16 Dec 1810, Mary Ann, b. 11 Mar 1813, Harriet Rebecca, b. 11 Jun 1815, Amanda Melvina, b. 19 Sep 1817, Daniel W., b. 21 Feb 1820, George William, b. 22 Feb 1822, and Elizabeth, b. 5 Feb 1828. George THOMAS' oldest son, Elijah Hart THOMAS (E.H.) was the father of George Morgan THOMAS who is listed in Regan's history of Lewis County as the "best personality" to ever come out of Lewis County, Kentucky.
George Thomas (son of Michael) left a will written in 1827 and probated in 1833 that goes as follows:
Wills inventory (sic) recorded in 1833 (page 52, Will Book C)

SEE RESEARCH NOTES on R.M.S.'s wife's new data may cause changes.!!!
"On August 16, 1797, Josiah WATSON sold to Richard Marshall SCOTT "a certain piece [sic] parcel or tract of land situate lying and being in the County of Fairfax on the waters of Holmes run, and called and known by the name of Bush Hill..."
Although this land had been in the possession of WATSON, it is in fact the same piece of land that I have been looking at, for on October 6, 1791, the "said piece, parcel or tract of land called Bush Hill was purchased by the said Josiah WATSON of a certain John RICKTER..." In other words, RICKTER bought the land from the executors of the Hendrickses estate, but sold it back after a year to Josiah WATSON, who sold it again a few years later to Richard Marshall SCOTT.
In one of the above transactions, some land was added to the original tract, for in 1797, the tract contained 272 acres, which was an increase of 50 acres. I do not know for sure where the additional land came from, but the additional acres were probably part of an adjacent 197 acre tract that Watson had bought in 1794. In addition to "Bush Hill," WATSON sold to SCOTT an additional 82 acre tract adjacent to Bush Hill. This tract was then assimilated into Bush Hill, as evidenced by later deeds.
The 1797 transaction is important for three reasons. The first is its use of "Bush Hill" to describe the tract of land. In every deed from this point on, the parcel that I am following is referred to as either Bush Hill or "the farm called Bush Hill." In fact, the name is still used today, with a subdivision, a street, and a school all bearing the name, Bush Hill.
The second reason is because included in the description of the 82 acre plot is "Hepburn's Mill road." Although this road does not exist today, at least not under the same name, this is the first use of such a landmark in the deed that are being used for this paper.
The third reason this deed is important is because the man who bought Bush Hill, Richard Marshall SCOTT, his son, Richard, Jr., and the latter's widow kept a continuous journal between 1811 and 1859. This journal provides an interesting history of Bush Hill, in addition to giving information about the county in that period; it gives a better idea of what Bush Hill was used for during this period.
Although there are only a few explicit references to what exactly was grown at Bush Hill, it was obvious that it was a full working family farm with several inhabitants living on it. Several extended family members are mentioned as living on the farm. Food items that are mentioned include grapes, apples, smoked salted pork, and wheat.
One interesting entry is dated September 8, 1814. On that day, SCOTT "began to haul in my tobacco from town to Bush Hill to keep it out of reach of the enemy who of our 104 hogsheads only took one." This is a reference to the occupation of the nearby port city of Alexandria by the British during the War of 1812. The complete journal is available for public reading, and serves as an interesting supplement to this paper.
1815-16
While Richard Marshall SCOTT owned Bush Hill, he increased its size by 92 acres through the purchase of three pieces of land. The first was from R. D. BUTTE on October 6, 1815. The second was from T. SWANE on June 20, 1816. The third was from Charles LOVE on July 5, 1819." ("A Farm Called Bush Hill" by Aaron Weber, http://www.bbhca.org/Farm_called_Bush_Hill.htm)
"Richard Marshall SCOTT d. 1836 1833, see epitaph below. RLD first owned Bush Hill, built by Josiah WATSON in 1763. RMS married his cousin (Mary?) MARSHALL of Maryland and was the father of Richard Marshall SCOTT who came into possession of Bush Hill at age 18 when his mother remarried in 1846. (Natalie Hughes)
Richard Marshall SCOTT is buried in the Scott Family Cemetery located on a rise at the western end of the oval created by Conference Center Dr., Centreville, Va. The cemetery is located about 200 yards southeast of the foundation of "Farmington Plantation". The Scott family owned this property from c.1792 to c. 1850. Epitaph from his headstone:
"SACRED To the memory of RICHARD M. SCOTT of Bush Hill who departed this life at Bath on the 31t of August 1833, in the 63d year of his age. He left an affectionate wife and two sons to whom he was endeared by his affections. His remains, dear and sacred to his family, were translated from Bath to this place."

The cemetery is located about 200 yards southeast of the foundation of "Farmington Plantation". The Scott family owned this property from c.1792 to c. 1850. Epitaph from her headstone:
"Sacred to the memory of Mrs. ELEANOR DOUGLASS SCOTT the amiable and lamented consort of RICHARD MARSHALL SCOTT of Bush Hill who departed this life in the 23d year of her age at Bush Hill on the 26th day of January 1830 having an infant son 5 months old called by his fathers name. She expired in the arms of her husband. Her remains dear and sacred to him, by his particular desire were translated to this spot, the family burying ground and interred the 28th day of January 1830. Let Eleanor's urn, her virtues in a train//In sympathetic grief attend her bier,//While friendship, love and charity remain//In silent anguish, type of sad despair."

General Notes: Child - Richard Marshall SCOTT, Jr.

Richard Marshall SCOTT (Sr.) d. 1836 (1833. See epitaph of RMS, Sr. RLD) first owned Bush Hill (in Fairfax County, Virginia), built by Josiah Watson in 1763. RMS married his cousin (Mary?) Marshall of Maryland and was the father of Richard Marshall SCOTT who came into possession of Bush Hill at age 18 when his mother remarried.
In 1833, Richard Marshall Scott died, and in 1846, six months before his seventeenth birthday, Richard Marshall Scott, Jr. moved to his father's farm. Soon after his birthday, he married Virginia GUNNELL of Washington. He followed in his father's footsteps by also adding to Bush Hill.
In that same year, 1846, this younger RMS married Virginia, sister of a GUNNELL friend, and he was soon able to write in his journal that he was owner of a plantation, a husband and father, and owner of (how many?) slaves. They in turn named their first son Richard Marshall SCOTT, who died a bachelor. If he had had legitimate offspring Bush Hill would have gone to that son, but instead went to his cousin, Leonard Coleman GUNNELL, because Leonard's uncle Francis GUNNELL had bought Bush Hill from his sister Virginia. Francis left it to a brother William, who left it to his orphaned nephew Leonard with life estate to Virginia. Leonard and wife Emily NELSON moved there from Georgetown to care for Virginia. They had Emily (Amenie), Mary Newbold RITTENHOUSE (my mother, called Rit), and Bruce, who inherited Bush Hill in portions of about 100 acres each, except that Bruce also acquired the old mansion with about thirty acres, land which later was zoned industrial by the city of Alexandria, making him very wealthy. The house, not being up to his standards for a home, was rented as a pre-school, but burned to the ground in the 1960's. (Natalie Hughes)
Copy of letter written by Richard Marshall Scott \endash Bush Hill, February 28th 1846
Dear Aunt Forest \endash
You will doubtlessly be surprised upon opening this and finding it written from Bush Hill. I doubt very much whether you have heard of Mrs. Scott's departure from the state of widow-hood into the blissful state of matrimony. It is none the less a fact \endash After turning the matter over in her own mind about four years, she was finally joined in matrimony to Dr. E H Henry on the 29th Jan. \endash Who, by the way is a very honorable & clever man. Upon her marriage she surrendered to me all my property over which she had the control, as executrix of my father. My Uncle Mr. Foote has consented & is now the Executor of my father's will until I arrive at Lawful age or enter into the happy state of matrimony \endash in the meantime I am taking the active management of my property (Mr. Foote being the nominal & responsible one) And I am now residing at Bush Hill, -keeping Bachelor's Hall \endash literally speaking. My object in writing you this, is, to say that I have in my possession, the portrait of my Father's first wife & of your dear Sister \endash and that it will give me great pleasure to hand it over to you. I do not offer it to you because I would not value it myself, but because I think you have a prior claim to it & would better know its value \endash I have no remembrance of the face for whom it was taken and of course would not bestow upon it its proper value \endash but still if I did not think you had a moral claim upon it I should value it for the sake of my dear departed father to whom she proved a devoted wife. It gives me great pleasure to have it in my power to give it to you, & it is now hanging in my chamber by the side of the portrait of my father, awaiting your order. It would give one pleasure my dear Aunt Forest to write a long friendly letter, but since I have moved out here I have not found time to accomplish many things I should have done. Bush Hill house is always open for Mrs. Forest's family & if they will visit it, it would give pleasure to their affectionate connection
Richard M Scott
P.S. I beg you to excuse this hasty scroll. I would not date (dare?) to send such to a lady \endash but have not even time to mend a pen \endash RMS
(on a separate page)
A letter written by my Father to Mrs. Ann Forest. Loaned to me by Miss Julie Forrest, a grand-daughter of the lady.
To be returned to Miss Forrest or some of her family in case of my death.
C. M. Johnston (the initials are difficult to decipher) (Provided by Natalie Hughes)
Richard marrie Virginia GUNNELL not long after this letter was written. Their oldest child, Eleanor was born in 1847. Additional children were Frank, Richard, and Ann Constace, the youngest, born in 1853.
The 1860 census of Fairfax, Virginia shows Virginia SCOTT as head of household. Richard Marshall SCOTT is presumed to have died after 1853 and before the census date of 4 Dec 1860.

General Notes: Husband - William SCOTT

This William SCOTT of Richland County, South Carolina may be the William SCOTT (SCUT/SCUTT?) who first settled into the Congarees about 1748. Considering that many of the O'DANIEL family of Fairfax County, Virginia went to SC around this time, he may be the William SCUT who was a friend of James O'DANIEL of Fairfax who also was in this area by 1754. If so, he is the husband of Elizabeth O'DANIEL (DANIEL), James' sister. In 1754, William and Elizabeth SCUTT sold to Francis SUMMERS 100 acres of land in Fairfax County, Virginia, an inheritance from her father, William O'DANIEL. Elizabeth's brother, James sold his 100 acres there in 1757. James had land granted to him in the Congarees in 1754.
In 1748, WILLIAM SCOTT, was granted land west of the Wateree River above the Richland County line. From WILLIAM's will, dated 1810, he had two sons and one daughter: William SCOTT; Samuel SCOTT who married second, Jane Ross ; and Elizabeth SCOTT, wife of Lewis DINKINS. General Notes: Husband - Clayton ULMER

Is Clayton ULMER related to the family of Charles Henry DANIELL and Mary Melvina BAKER of Pavo, Thomas County, Georgia? James Ulmer DANIELL was born on the family farm in Pavo, Georgia on May 8, 1899, the tenth child of Charles Henry DANIELL and Mary Melvina BAKER. His family called him by his middle name, Ulmer, and did so throughout his life. In Miami, with James' second family and among friends, he was always called "Jimmy", never "Ulmer".

Why the middle name of Ulmer? Was the ULMER family close to the DANIELL family of Thomas County? James' parents were Baptist. Clayton was a deacon of the Primitive Baptist Church in Grady County, Georgia, which borders Thomas County and may have been friends with Charles Henry and Mary Melvina DANIELL. Was James' middle name to honor Carlton ULMER or his wife, Anna?

Clayton ULMER married Anna L. HUDSON 18 Mar. 1894 in Decatur County, Georgia. (Bk. H pg. 368, http://ftp.rootsweb.ancestry.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/vitals/marriages/hudson.txt)
