Viking was bred and owned by Mr.& Mrs. A.C.Petersen of Connecticut; trained and driven by Sanders RUSSELL, who won two straight heats with his foot in a cast; since he felt the horse was too difficult for anyone else to drive. General Notes: Child - Sarah Elizabeth RUSSELL

Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzy" RUSSELL married Warren Jourdan ALSTON while he was attending school in Glennville, Alabama in 1867. About 1870, Warren moved his family to Arkadelphia, Arkansas. The 1870 census for Arkadelphia, Arkansas shows that Warren and Lizzie's next door neighbor is a Martha RUSSELL, 36, born in Alabama who has a son, William L., 3, born in Arkansas. (Question - Was this her mother, 16 years older than Lizzie, or a different relation?)

1870 U.S. Census, Arkansas, clark County, Arkadelphia P.O.; Series: M593 Roll: ___ Page: 4:

-- William L. 3 M W AR

After contracting small pox from one of his patients in 1875, Warren died. Lizzy and her three young children moved from Arkadelphia, Arkansas to Stevenson, Jackson County, Alabama. In the 1880 U. S. Census, Jackson County, Alabama, she and her three children, Lorenzo Russell, Nathaniel Charles, and Catherine, live next door to her uncle, Israel P. RUSSELL, 55, and his wife Mattie, 42. Lizzie, head of household, is listed as Isreal's niece. Lizzie is a music teacher.

The relationship of these families bring together the RUSSELL, McCULLOH, DANIELL, DANIEL, COOK, and JOURDAN descent lines. 1880 Census Place E. "Dr. Alexander Salley was born in Orangeburg, SC. 26 April 1818. He attended area schools, including Mt. Zion School in Winnsboro then South Carolina College in Columbia, SC. He left the school just before graduation, claiming he did not want to pay extra to graduate. He then attended the South Carolina medical school in Charleston. graduating in the class of 1843. Medical school at that time consisted of two term's 4-5 months long of lectures for two years of which the second year was a repeat of the first year's lectures. After two terms of lectures, students submitted a thesis paper to get a medical degree. Dr. Salley then returned to the Orangeburg area and preceptored with Dr. T.A. Elliott and went into medical practice near the Robert Low swamp area. In 1859, he quit his medical practice due to competion. In 1861, Dr. Salley was a volunteer surgeon at the first battle of Manassas, Virginia. On the formation of Col. Keitt's regiment, the 20th SCVI he was appointed surgeon. When the regiment was in Charleston on coast defense, he was in charge of one of the hospitals in Mt. Pleasant. In 1864, Col. Kennedy appointed him Kershaw's brigade surgeon. Dr. Sally being loyal to his friends in the 20th, refused to move his quarters and mess with the brigade staff, choosing instead to remain with the regiment. After the war, Dr. Sally returned to private practice in Orangeburg, SC joining his old preseptor, Dr. Elliott in partnership. In 1866, with out his knowledge the local citizen's of Orangeburg nominated and elected Dr. Salley to the statehouse. In 1872, his son Dr.M.G.Salley joined Dr. Salley in practice. Dr. Salley died in Orangeburg, SC April 1, 1895 He is buried in Sunnyside cemetery." "Mary Keziah Wright first married Stephen Moss in about 1763, who came to Orangeburg from Virginia in about 1760. He died while on a visit to Virginia in about 1774. After his death, she married John Salley. They had a son, also named Stephen Moss, who was born about 1769 and died on 2 November 1839. He married, in 1809, Ann Erwin (c. 1784 - 25 September 1850), a daughter of James Erwin and Sarah Daniel. There are Erwin and Daniel places on a Robert Mills map of Barnwell District, made in 1820, in the area of Midway, South Carolina, where these families lived. Midway is between Bamberg and Branchville. None of these towns existed when this map was made." (George Salley, mailto:factoid@ix.netcom.com, 11/18/2005)

A BRIEF SEARCH FOR THE ELUSIVE JOHN SALLEY, JR.
A paper by George Bull Salley, Jr.

This search will be brief, because of the few resources available, which refer to the most elusive John Salley, Jr. There are only one census, and some documents from the era of the Revolution, and a few other things-none of which really document him, but they do allow for speculation. He is not mentioned in any published genealogy of this family.1 But he surely must have lived.
There are only three John Salley's in the 1790 census, throughout the whole country, even with all the variations: Salley, Sally, Sallee and Sallé, all of which were checked. I am not implying that all these families are related, but am surprised that there are so few by this name. John Salley, Jr., may appear in this census as "John Sally."2 John Salley, the elder, the progenitor of most of the Orangeburg area Salley's, appears in the same census as "John Sally, Senr."3 His family had two males, 16 years and upwards (including the head of household), two males under 16, two "free white females" and 33 slaves. In the family of John Salley, presumably, John Salley, Jr., there were also two males, 16 years and upwards (including the head of household), two females and no slaves. It is virtually impossible to tell who these people were. The two females in the home of John Salley, Sr., were, undoubtedly, Mary Keziah Wright Moss Salley and their daughter, Mary Salley. One of the males over 16 was John Salley, Sr., and one under 16 was George Elmore Salley. The other males, one 16 or older, and one under 16 cannot now be identified. The family of John Salley (presumably junior) also cannot be identified.
The name of John Salley, Jr., appears on a deed, referred to in Alexander S. Salley's early history of Orangeburg County, as: "from John Salley, Jr., to John Salley, Sen." Salley further writes, quoting from the deed, dated 26 August 1790, "Which tract of Land & Town Lott aforesaid Devolved in a Lineal Decent [from Henry Salley, the immigrant] to the aforesaid John Salley, Junr as being Heir at Law to the said Tract."4 It is conceivable that Henry Salley (the immigrant) left this property to John Salley, Jr., in his will, but this possibility will probably never be known. Or this property may have, somehow, been transferred from John Salley to John Salley, Jr., "in a Lineal Decent," who then, apparently later, sold it back to John Salley, Sr. That is all Mr. Salley says about John Salley, Jr. He is not really interested in these people in this passage; he is only interested in the spelling of the Salley surname.

(Page 2)
The elder John Salley's wife, Mary Keziah Wright Moss Salley, whose birth and death dates are unknown, is probably listed in the 1800 census as Keziah Sally.5 In that census there are two males, one age 10-15 and another age 16-25. There is only one female, 45 or older. The boy 10-15 is probably George Elmore Salley, who was born in 1788. The other male, 16-25, could not have been John Salley, Jr., because, if he appears in the 1790 census, he would only have been 15 years old (or younger) that year-clearly too young to be a head of household. Mary Keziah Wright Moss Salley is probably the woman, 45 or older. She is thought to have been born in 1745. Just below her entry is John Wright, indicating that his place was next to hers, and who could be related. Their daughter, Mary Salley, was 24 or 25 years old in 1800, and had probably married Benjamin Hart before this census was taken. She had her first child in 1804, her last in 1811, and died in 1812.6 Mary Keziah Wright Moss Salley cannot be found on any subsequent census, and some think she died in 1802. Her grave is unknown, but she may be buried in the old Salley Cemetery in Orangeburg, next to her husband, but in an unmarked grave, as may be John Salley, Jr.
The old Salley Cemetery is surrounded by an ancient brick wall. It is on land once owned by John Salley7-and, at that time, was in the country. It is now in a neighborhood, with an apartment complex nearby. I remember when it was grown up in vines, when I was a boy, but it is now well taken care of, with another metal fence around it. There are two distinct parts, indicated by different brick and a noticeable seam. There are only four tombstones now standing. In order, from the gate, they are: John Salley, his daughter, Mary Salley Hart, his son, George Elmore Salley and his wife, Margaret Lockhart Jones Salley (whose grave is the only one in the newer part). There is room between John Salley's grave and that of Mary Salley Hart for three or more graves, so, possibly, the graves of Mary Keziah Wright Moss Salley and John Salley, Jr. are there, but without tombstones. Benjamin Hart could also be there. It is hard to see why the addition was made, if all those spaces were empty-so maybe they were graves. The addition may have been built by George Elmore Salley, his widow, or one of their older children, since they had such a large family-six or seven men and two women (and their spouses), but all their children are buried elsewhere.
John Salley was, at certain times during the Revolution, a Loyalist to the British king. This, as well as his position as a Patriot, are thoroughly documented in Lawton Salley's article in this Newsletter, "John Salley: Patriot or Loyalist."8 In fact, his British service may also show his supposed son, John Salley, Jr. In one of

the works cited by Lawton Salley, a pay abstract for "Colonel John Fisher's Regiment, Orangeburgh [British] Militia (Fork of Edisto and Orangeburgh, SC), Captain John Sally's Company, Soldiers' Certification, Charlestown, SC, 183-days pay, 14 Jun-14 Dec 1780, paid 23 Nov 1781," John Salley is listed first as captain. Then are listed, in addition to a number of others: Henry Salley, Martin Salley, Sen., Martin Salley, Jun., and John Salley-all these are privates.9 Henry Salley and Martin Salley, Sen., were brothers of John Salley. I cannot account for Martin Salley, Jun. He could not have been John Martin Salley, a son of Henry Salley, because he was not born until 1788.10 Private John Salley may have been a son of Captain John Salley.
To complicate matters further, there is also a John Salley in Spartanburg County, according to the 1790 census.11 The reason I mention him is that there was a John Salley in a North Carolina military unit, Captain Harper's Militia Company, some time before the Revolution.12 Since this reference is about colonial solders for the period 1732-1774, this could be John Salley, our ancestor, who was born in 1740. He did take part in the Cherokee War, 1759-1761,13 which is also reported in this reference,14 but I think this is more likely the John Salley from Spartanburg County.
To make matters worse, there is also a Private John Salley in a South Carolina Loyalist Regiment of the Camden, South Carolina, Militia, serving from August to November, 1781.15 This is probably not our John Salley, or John Salley, Jr., because they may have been in a Loyalist Militia Company, during the same period, as shown above. This is probably also the Spartanburg John Salley. There is also a Pvt. John Sally, who appears on a payroll of the 1st North Carolina Regiment of Militia, of 1780, an American unit, who, given the variable loyalties of some of the Salley's during the Revolution, is also probably the Spartanburg John Salley.16
And, finally, there is a Sgt. John Salley, who appears on a muster roll of a Loyalist unit, 20 November 1779, who is shown as having died.17 It is almost

impossible to account for this John Salley. All those shown above were alive in 1790, according to the census of that year. This John Salley may be even more obscure than John Salley, Jr.
There are only four John Salley's, throughout the country, in the census of 1800, only one of whom lived in the South. He lived in Pendleton District, South Carolina,18 and may have been the one from Spartanburg County. There are also only four in 1810, none of whom lived in the South. I think we can conclude from these censuses, that if John Salley, Jr., ever lived, he had died by 1800. But census takers often miss people. For instance, none of my family can be found in the 1870 censuses, although two families were living then, and my grandfather was born that year. So it is entirely possible that John Salley, Jr., was simply missed.
It is sometimes suggested that John Salley, Jr., may have been a son of Henry Salley or Martin Salley, John Salley's older brothers. But none their sons were named John, except John Martin Salley, who was not born until 1788, as shown above.19
This is where the matter of the mysterious John Salley, Jr., stands for now-at least as far as this writer is concerned, and I hope for readers' contributions toward solving this mystery. I think he lived, but he is still most elusive.

"George Elmore Salley was born in Orangeburg county, March 10, 1788. On May 29, 1808, he married Margaret Lockhart Jones, daughter of Samuel Phillips Jones, sometime clerk of court for Orangeburg county. He served as a member of the House of Representatives and senator from Orangeburg county, and in 1812 was commissioned as captain of a militia company. He died Aug. 14, 1828, and the following inscription on his tombstone was written by his close friend, Gov. Thomas Bennett: 'This simple tablet is a humble offering of conjugal affections, denotes the spot where the remains of Geo. E. Salley were deposited on the 16th of Aug. 1828. A manly decision of character dignified his career as a Rep. and Senator. He was honored and respected. His attitude throughout life illustrated the purest principal, exhibiting in bold delineation the words and beauty of moral rectitude. Sincere in all the attributes of friendship: affectionately assiduous as a husband: tender as a father, indulgent as a master, he was not less honored and beloved in private than respected in public walks of life.'" A BRIEF SEARCH FOR THE ELUSIVE JOHN SALLEY, JR.
