General Notes: Husband - Captain Augustus Howard ALSTON, Jr., USN, WWII

"Augustus Howard ALSTON, Jr. b.20 Aug. 1907 in Charleston, S.C. d. WW II, 03 April 1943 as Commander of the Submarine "Pickerel." Japanese war records show that the Pickerel was depth charged off the coast of Japan. All hands lost. Married Elma Epps WATKINS on 15 Aug. 1935 in New London, Conn." [Family records, Edwin Barry Speth, III]

"On his second patrol of the war, Cdr Alston took the S-6 Pickerel to Honshu after refueling at Midway. He sortied from Pearl. On March 6, 1943 he left Midway bound for the empire of Japan and was never seen or heard from again. Postwar Japanese records indicate he and his crew were sunk by Japanese subchasers on April 3, 1943 after sinking a 1000 ton Jap freighter. There were no survivors. The Pickerel was the first Pearl boat to go down in 16 months....There is a memorial to the Submarine Service, which had the highest casualty rate of any branch during the war, in Pearl. It lists all the U.S. subs lost and the inscription simply states: "Still on Patrol" [Source: "Silent Victory" by Clay Blair Jr., April 1975, Bantam Books]
A second account of the USS Pickerel:
"She [the Pickerel] departed Pearl Harbor on 18 March 1943 and, after topping off with fuel and provisions at Midway Island on 22 March, headed for the eastern coast of northern Honshu- and was never heard from again. Pickerel was the first submarine to be lost in the Central Pacific area. She was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 19 August 1943.
Post-war analysis of Japanese records give conflicting suggestions about Pickerel's fate. The Japanese officially credit her with sinking Submarine Chaser Number 13 on 3 April and Fukuei Maru on 7 April, and give no official report of her destruction. Those records also describe an action off Shiramuka Lighthouse on northern Honshu- on 3 April 1943 in which naval aircraft first bombed an unidentified submarine, then directed Shiragami and Bunzan Maru to the spot, where they dropped twenty-six depth charges. A large quantity of oil floated to the surface, which was often enough for Japanese ASW ships to believe their target was sunk. It is likely Pickerel's fuel oil bunkers leaked. Since there were several other ASW operations in the area in that period, and Pickerel was the only American submarine in that area; one of these other attacks, sometime after 7 April, probably claimed her." General Notes: Wife - Elizabeth M. ALSTON

In 1833, James ALSTON of Fairfield County, South Carolina gave 2,303 acres to his daughter Elisabeth Alston PEARSON. Family tradition says Elisabeth and her husband George Butler PEARSON constructed there "Fonti Flora" plantation prior to 1836. In 1849 the Pearson family placed "Fonti Flora" in trust for the use of Elisabeth PEARSON and her heirs. Her son George Butler PEARSON, Jr. took over farming the plantation until his death in 1898. George, Jr.'s son William Boyce PEARSON succeeded his father on the plantation. In 1976, "Fonti Flora" was nominated for the National Registry of historic Places and was at that time still occipied by descendants of the Pearson family.

On 10 Dec 1812, James Banks married Hannah Alston. (Bible of Ralph Banks, as quoted in Genealogical Record of the Banks Family..., 3rd ed., Sarah B. Franklin, 1972, p 81)
*
After her marriage, her husband forbade Hannah from associating with her Alston family anymore. According to the source, this was due to religious differences. JOHN M. ALSTON is descended paternally from an old Georgia family, and on the mother's side takes his ancestry from Wales. His great-grandfather was James ALSTON, who married a YANCEY, a member of the same family to which the great statesman and orator of that name belonged. John ALSTON, son of James A. ALSTON, had a son by the name of James A. ALSTON, who was born in Elbert county, Ga., in the year 1815. James ALSTON was taken when a lad to Marengo county, Ala., and early in the thirties returned to Georgia, locating in the county of Monroe, where in April, 1838, he married Rebecca J. NORWOOD, daughter of Caleb NORWOOD, whose father, John NORWOOD, came from Wales in an early day and settled in North Carolina. James A. ALSTON and family lived in Georgia until his death in 1853, and his widow subsequently removed to Sumter county, Ga., thence, in 1874, the family came to Alabama, settling in Barbour county, near the village of Spring Hill. Mr. ALSTON served in the Indian war of 1836, and it was from the effects of disease contracted while in the army that his death was caused. Mrs. ALSTON was born in the town of Charlotte, N. C., December 8, 1822, and in 1825, was taken by her parents to Tennessee, in which state the family lived till 1829, when they removed to Talboton county, Ga., thence in 1836, to the county of Monroe, where, as already stated, she met and married Mr. ALSTON. James A. and Rebecca ALSTON became the parents of five children, namely: Mrs. Mary J. JORDAN, deceased; Joseph A., deceased; James M., John M. and W. A. John M. ALSTON was born June 16, 1850, in Georgia, and after obtaining a fair English education began clerking at the age of twenty-one for an agricultural firm in the city of Atlanta. Subsequently he removed to Sumter county, Ga., and there farmed for five years, at the end of which time he changed his residence to Barbour county, Ala., locating near Spring Hill, where he now owns a fine plantation, consisting of 3,000 acres of very valuable land. Mr. ALSTON has paid much attention to agriculture, and as a result of close study and intelligent observance has become one of the most thorough and prosperous planters in Barbour county. He impresses all with whom he comes in contact as a man of strong character, and as a citizen few people in the community stand higher in the estimation of the public. For some years Mr. ALSTON has taken much interest in politics, which he thinks should be lifted from the present depth of degradation into which it has fallen in Alabama, and while a firm supporter of the principles of the democratic party believes that only good men and true should be preferred for official positions. He has attended every county convention since becoming a resident of Barbour county, and his wise counsel has frequently been of great value in shaping the course of local affairs, and bringing to the front the most competent and available candidates. He is also greatly interested in religious work and has always been found on the side of measures looking to the moral and intellectual enlightenment of the community. He has filled several offices in the Methodist church, with which he has for many years been identified, holding at this time the position of steward and Sunday school superintendet. Mr. ALSTON was happily married, April 18, 1883, in Barbour county, to Willie B., daughter of Rev. A. J. BRIGGS, and is now the father of four children: James Briggs, deceased; William B., Daisy McFARLAND, and Jane Norwood.

General Notes: Husband - Dr. Nathaniel Charles ALSTON, Sr.

Nathaniel Charles ALSTON was born 1 July 1820 in Abbeville District, South Carolina. He was raised in Elbert County, Georgia by his grandmother, Gilly Yancey ALSTON. He was trained as a physician at Jefferson College and moved to Gainesville, Georgia in 1840. He married Catherine Lucretia JORDAN in 1840 and moved to Enon, Alabama, but did not stay long . They then moved to Stewart County, Georgia in 1842 where they remained and had their three children. He was one of the first physicians in the Richland area and had a wide practice. Dr. N. C. ALSTON, Sr. after settling first in Richland in 1844 (lived in a home that stood where the Roy HOLLOMANs lived in 1932), later moved to Preston. Then, at the Harrell Place near Richland, about 1860, bought a farm on Slaughter Creek and lived there for several years. (S-W Journal 30 Dec 1932)
During the War Between the States, Dr. ALSTON was in Atlanta , caring for the massive number of the wounded brought there. See " History of Stewart County" , page 396, 624 by Helen Eliza Terrell for biography.

While his son, Warren Jourdan ALSTON, was home on furlough from the Army of Virginia in 1863, his wife Catherine died of typhoid fever.

Dr. ALSTON was at one time the President of the GA Medical Association. (Stewart-Webster Journal, 3 Feb 1933) He had a place in Red Hill Community where one store over 100 years old was still standing in 1932. There was also a school there, built about 1837, for which Dr. Jubilee SMITH had donated the land.

General Notes: Husband - Dr. Nathaniel Charles ALSTON, Jr.

Nathaniel Charles ALSTON Jr. was a son of Dr. Nathaniel Charles ALSTON and Catherine Lucretia JOURDAN. He much younger than the their other children and after the death of his mother, was cared for by an old slave, Emeline, thought to have been given to his mother by his maternal grandfather, Col. Warren JOURDAN. Nathaniel graduated from Atlanta Medical College and practiced medicine with his father until his father's death, later giving up the medical profession for other business activities. He was one of the first men in Stewart Co. Georgia to plant peach and pecan trees for commercial purposes, having one of the largest individual pecan groves in the state.
"My father remembers that either N. C. ALSTON, Jr. (probably) or his father, N. C. ALSTON, Sr. donated the land for the Richland school, and that the land was supposed to be returned to the family if it were no longer used for that purpose, but we can find no proof. I have searched some of the land records and have not been able to find any record of this. Possibly records of it could be in Webster County. Richland's 1st school was located just back of Peek's Store (On corner, across from what was later the site of the Stewart Webster Journal) in about 1837. I'm not sure if this is the school to which Daddy was referring." (Helen Leino)

**DEATH OF MRS. ROBERT A. ALSTON.
ATLANTA, Ga., Sept. 5--Mrs. Robert A. Alston died in Decatur to-night at 6 o'clock. She was the widow of the late Col. Robert A. Alston, who was murdered some years ago in the executive office by Capt. Edward Cox. The shock of her husband's death followed Mrs. Alston through life. Col. Alston was a liberal liver, and on his death left nothing, so that his widow's life has been much trouble. Capt. Cox, who was pardoned by Gov. Stephens, now occupies an official position here. General Notes: Husband - Pvt. Warren Jourdan ALSTON, CSA

Warren Jourdan ALSTON' father, Dr. N. C. Alston, Sr., sent him to school in Glennville, Alabama to be near his Great-Aunt Kitty, Catherine Daniell MITCHELL (sister of Juliette Anna DANIELL, wife of Col. Warren JOURDAN, who was Warren ALSTON's grandfather.) From there Warren J. ALSTON ran off with his MITCHELL cousins to join the Confederate Army. He was captured during the war, and kept a diary while in a Union prison.

Privates Warren J. Alston, Jordan H. Mitchell, Randolph Mitchell, and N. B. Mitchell are named in the published muster roll of the City Light Guards, Company A, Second Battalion of Georgia Volunteers, at Camp Lee, near Petersburg, Va., June 20th, 1862. [The Columbus Daily Enquirer, Columbus, Georgia, Sunday, February 20, 1898, Page 6]

Warren Jourdan ALSTON married Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" RUSSELL on 2 Dec 1867. After the war, Warren and Lizzie moved to Arkadelphia, Arkansas and had 3 children: Russell L., Elizabeth, and Charles.

Warren was a druggist, operating an apothecary in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. In 1875, he contracted smallpox from a customer, and died soon after. His widow, Elizabeth Russell ALSTON moved her family back to Stevenson, Jackson County, Alabama, where, in 1880, she is head of household and lives next door to her uncle, Israel P. RUSSELL.

Warren had two sons, Russell Lorenzo and Nathaniel Charles, and one daughter, Catherine, who he may not have lived to see. His descendants live in Stevenson, Alabama. One descendant was a Lt. LEGG of the U. S. Navy. 1361

General Notes: Wife - Sarah Elizabeth RUSSELL

Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzy" RUSSELL married Warren Jourdan ALSTON while he was attending school in Glennville, Alabama in 1867. About 1870, Warren moved his family to Arkadelphia, Arkansas. The 1870 census for Arkadelphia, Arkansas shows that Warren and Lizzie's next door neighbor is a Martha RUSSELL, 36, born in Alabama who has a son, William L., 3, born in Arkansas. (Question - Was this her mother, 16 years older than Lizzie, or a different relation?)

After contracting small pox from one of his patients in 1875, Warren died. Lizzy and her three young children moved from Arkadelphia, Arkansas to Stevenson, Jackson County, Alabama. In the 1880 U. S. Census, Jackson County, Alabama, she and her three children, Lorenzo Russell, Nathaniel Charles, and Catherine, live next door to her uncle, Israel P. RUSSELL, 55, and his wife Mattie, 42. Lizzie, head of household, is listed as Isreal's niece. Lizzie is a music teacher.

The relationship of these families bring together the RUSSELL, McCULLOH, DANIELL, DANIEL, COOK, and JOURDAN descent lines. 1880 Census Place E. General Notes: Husband - James Talbot DANIELL, USAAC, WWII

James Talbot DANIELL was born on 7 Jun 1920 near Pavo, Georgia on the farm where his parents, James Ulmer and Jewel Singletary DANIELL, and grandparents, Charles Henry and Mary Melvina Baker DANIELL, lived. He was called "Talbot" by the family and was known as "Big Bud" or "Bud" to his stepmother, Carmen SWANSON, and half brothers, Robert Louis and Walter Earl DANIELL.

Talbot accompanied his parents and younger brother Walter Fritz DANIELL to Miami after the family farm was sold in 1923.
Talbot and his brother Fritz returned to Pavo to live on Granddaddy Daniell's farm for several years after their mother left their father. While there, Talbot's brother, Fritz, contracted colitis (some say pleurisy) and died there at his grandfather's farm on May 6, 1936.
Family recollections say that Talbot was talking to his grandfather Charles Henry DANIEL on the front porch of the Pavo homestead when Charles Henry suffered a heart attack and died on August 10, 1936. They had been discussing airplanes when Talbot was asked to bring in some firewood. When he returned to the front porch, Charles Henry had died sitting in his rocking chair.

Bettye Jane was age 17, not 21, as indicated. Both she and James resided in Miami, Dade County. The marriage was in Collier County which bordered Dade to the west. It may be that they eloped to another county and Bettye misstated her age to facilitate the marriage. Five days later, 10 October 1941, James Talbot joined the Army Air Corps. World War II was brewing.

On 10 October 1941, Talbot joined the Army Air Corps. He became a bombardier/gunner in B-26 Martin Marauder medium bombers with the 8th Air Force during World War II. According to stories, he was in North Afica, Sicily, and Italy. It was said that he was shot down on three occasions, all behind German lines, but always made it back to Allied lines. In one story, Bud and another crewman flipped a coin to see who would fly a particular mission as bombardier or turret gunner. Bud flew as bombardier. The aircraft returned from the mission with the gun turret blown away by a flak burst. Another story had him flying as bombardier/nose gunner when an altitude fused flak shell tore through the nose bubble just in front of him, ripping the nose bubble off the aircraft. In his picture, Bud wears Staff Sergeant chevrons and his hat shows the famous "50 mission crush" favored by Army aviators. His decorations include Aircrew Member wings, the Air Medal with Oak Leaf clusters, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the American Defense Service Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.

"It's Been a Great Ride:" Retired Navy Nurse Reflects on Her Career, By Susan Houston Klaus
"She peppers her conversation with spicy language, talks with an authority that suggests a tough-as-nails demeanor- and has a reputation among her friends for having a huge heart. Officially, she's Lieutenant Commander Carol Grice, Nurse Corps, U.S. Navy (Ret.). She's also Carol Andersen Grice '53. As a Navy nurse in the '50s and '60s, the Methodist School of Nursing graduate tested gender biases and paved the way for innumerable women to serve our country in positions of leadership alongside their male counterparts.
Carol had no way of knowing all that was in her future when she enrolled at Methodist in 1950. But, back then, she knew she had a calling for nursing and military service.
"During the Korean War, I had just gotten out of high school and was working for Mutual Benefit Insurance Company of Omaha," she says. "The other girls who worked there were talking about boyfriends who had gone off to Korea. It just came into my head, 'that's what I want to do.'" Carol resigned her job and was accepted into the Class of 1953- nearly two dozen young women who, it's been said, faced some of the most stringent academic standards that their group could remember.
After graduation, she signed up for a two-year stint in the Navy Nurse Corps Reserves, received a direct presidential appointment to the rank of ensign and was assigned to Portsmouth, Virginia. Her two-year commitment became a more than- 20-year military career. She served at posts that took her from Virginia to Japan, California to North Carolina, and Hawaii.
When she arrived at the chest ward in Oakland, California, the head nurse; a notoriously tough female lieutenant- asked her to wash the windows. Carol declined and suggested that the task wasn't the best use of her time. It was a brash reply, but the lieutenant soon found that Carol was worth her salt. A few months later, she was handpicked by her predecessor to run the unit. Being asked to take over "was one heck of a compliment for me," she says.
In the early 1960s, she served three years at Camp Pendleton, running a busy general medical award and later setting up the medical intensive care unit. Though she didn't have a BSN which limited her ability to rise to a rank higher than Lieutenant Commander- the Methodist alumna earned a reputation for knowing her stuff and being capable beyond her years.
"I wasn't always popular with other nurses because of my 'junior' status," Carol notes. But her Midwestern work ethic garnered her respect of those who recognized a good solid Navy nurse.
"I led by example, not by demands." Still, she says, "I ran a tight ship." The Marines at Camp Pendleton nicknamed her "Gunny"- homage to their tough gunnery sergeant and a term of honor.
She tested the traditionally male establishment during her career. An especially notable time was when she served on the board of governors of the officer's club at the Barstow, California military base. She asked to attend the base's Mess Night, a formal Marine Corps dinner, and one that women military weren't invited to. She got a "no" from the commanding officer, the major general, because she was a woman. In her usual form, she pressed the matter. The next year, the doors were opened not only to her but also to her fellow nurses. During the dinner, Carol was asked if when the "smoking light" went on, would she observe the tradition and smoke a cigar. She smoked that cigar, seated next to her male contemporaries.
They finally told me I needed to slow down," she laughs. "They said I was an overachiever.
In the '60s, Carol married a Marine and continued to serve in chief nurse and senior nurse posts around the country. She retired at a ceremony in October 1974, wearing her crisp dress whites as she reviewed the troops.
She continued on to nursing jobs in Arizona and California, and for a few years, worked in Omaha. Since 1997, she's called California her home. But she's far from retired even as she marked her 75th birthday in July 2007 and admits that a hip fracture gives her "some difficulty in getting from point A to point B."
Post-surgery and faced with hospital staff who suggested she move to a nursing home, Carol gave a predictable answer: "I said, 'I'll go to rehab or I'll go home. Those are your choices.' They finally told me I needed to slow down," she laughs. "They said I was an overachiever."
Carol volunteered as the Oceanside, California area manager of Operation Interdependence, a national organization that gathers and delivers donations of C-Rats-snacks and travel-size toiletries. Her office reached more than 190,000 deployed troops.
Looking back, Carol marvels at all she's experienced. "It's been a great ride, and I've loved every minute of it."
She's received a wealth of honors for her military and volunteer service over the years, including recognition by the U.S. Department of Defense. This summer, she was recognized by the Blue Angels and was included among a group of active duty military and veterans to attend the Ronald Reagan Golf Classic Legacy Dinner. In December, she'll speak to the Daughters of the Revolution and accept a special award.
Looking back, Carol marvels at all she's experienced. "It's been a great ride, and I've loved every minute of it."
She credits her alma mater with preparing her for a long, esteemed career. "At Methodist, we were given responsibility roles very early in our training," she says. "They instilled professionalism in us and the importance of doing it right at the very beginning. We had excellent training."
