Obituary: Harrison B. Wetherill died Aug. 8, 2011, in Easton at the age of 92. Harry was born in Chester, Pa., the second of six sons of Robert Wetherill Jr. and Barbara Bispham Wetherill. He grew up around boats and the sea during summers in Cape May, N.J. He attended the Episcopal Academy in Overbrook, Pa., and graduated from Yale University in 1941. During World War II, Harry served aboard the light cruiser Brooklyn in the Mediterranean and aboard the heavy cruiser Canberra in the western Pacific. He received a naval commendation for his service as gunnery officer on the Canberra during an attack by Japanese aircraft. In 1956 Harry purchased "Stock Grange Farm" near West Chester, Pa., from actor Claude Rains. Harry farmed the 350-acre property for the next 30 years. He loved the farming life: the outdoors, the hard physical labor and the satisfaction of working the earth. He took great pride in implementing the best soil conservation practices. Harry actively participated in community affairs, including serving on the West Bradford Township Planning Commission, as vice chairman of the West Bradford Board of Supervisors and as vice chairman of the Downingtown Area High School Authority. Harry met his beloved wife, Jean Pugh, from Charleston, W.Va., while she was at Smith College. Jean passed away in 1979. Harry later married Nora Gibson, and they moved to Easton to pursue Harry's passion for sailing. Harry and Nora loved the Chesapeake Bay and they spent many happy days sailing the 37-foot Dickerson ketches Jester and Jester II up and down the East Coast. Harry was also an avid tennis player into his 80s. After Harry and Nora divorced, Harry spent many wonderful years with his dear friend Peggy Cook. Harry is survived by his three children, Wendy Hughes and her husband John, of Unionville, Pa., David Wetherill and his wife Bonnie, of Coatesville, Pa., and Harrison B. Wetherill Jr. and his wife Susan, of West River. He is also survived by his grandsons, Brian Hughes of Tulsa, Okla., Benjamen Wetherill and his wife Yelena of Boston and Charles Wetherill and his wife Sanna of La Marsa, of Tunisia; as well as by his three great-grandchildren, Alida, Hilla and Samuel Wetherill. General Notes: Husband - Thomas Woodward RAIFORD, Sr.

The 1850 census of the Northern Division, Marshall County, Mississippi, dated 5 Nov 1850, Series: M432 Roll: 377 Page: 332, shows the family of Thomas and Sarah Barbee RAIFORD. Thomas, a farmer, is 41, Sarah 23, Elizabeth 5, and Julia 3. Their next door neighbor is Thomas' brother, Malachi RAIFORD and his wife, Patience. Also living in Thomas' household is John WEBB 24 and Elizabeth 20, possibly John's wife or sister.

Sarah died before September 1859 when Thomas married Emily QUIGLEY. The 1860 census shows Mary, Nancy, Thomas W., Jr., and Ellen, age 1, have been added to the family. Considering that Emily is age 1 as of the census she is probably the daughter of Thomas' wife Sarah who may have died in childbirth. Thomas and Emily were married on 22 September 1859, unlikely to have a child aged one.
