General Notes: Child - Caroline R. PORTER

Caroline R. "Carrie" PORTER is believed to be a daughter of James PORTER and Martha TURNER of Baldwin County, Georgia.

The 1840 census, Baldwin County, Georgia, lists two females ages 5 to 10 in James and Martha PORTER's household, presumed to be Caroline R., b. Oct 1830, and her sister, Anne E., b. about 1832. Anne E. is named in James and Martha's home in 1850 Baldwin County.

Caroline R. PORTER married Arthur R. DANIELL on 30 November 1848 in Baldwin County, Georgia. The marriage is recorded in a family bible cited in 1878 as part of the family record of Mary A. [TUCKER] DANIELL, Arthur's mother. Another marriage record transcription shows "PORTHER, Caroline DANIEL, Arthur R. 11/30/1848" (http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/baldwin/vitals/marriage/marr1805b.txt). Carrie is named as PORTER in this record from Zebulon Methodist Church, South: "63. Mr. Arthur DANIEL Miss Carrie PORTER 1876 James L. Pierce from Montpelier died" Register of Members of Zebulon Methodist Church, South - Hancock County, Georgia, pg. 13-21, Margarette Goldsby Gaissert, Compiler, Extractor and Publisher, Transcribed by Scott O. Fraser (sofraser@aol.com), as understood from text (May 2006)

On 8 May 1856, Joshua Madison Jasper CALLAWAY married Anne E. PORTER. About 1870, John Francis Marion CALLAWAY (J. M. J.'s brother) married Louisa C. DANIELL, Carrie's sister-in-law and widow of Henry W. POSEY.

Published in the Union and Recorder, Dec. 10, 1873, page 4: "GEORGIA, Baldwin County, Ordinary's Office in and for said county. December 1st, 1873 MRS. CARRIE R. DANIEL, has applied for exemption of personalty and acting apart and valuation of the same, and I will pass upon it at 11 o'clock A. M. on the 13th day of December 1873, at my office. DANIELL B. SANFORD, Ordinary."

Caroline and Arthur are without children in the 1850, 60, 70, and 80 censuses.

Arthur died before 1900 when Aunt Carrie, widowed, lives in the household of her niece, Claud A. CALEWAY [sic] and two of her brothers, Jasper D. and Neton [sic, Newton] D., children of Anne E. PORTER and J. M. J. CALLAWAY.

When and where Caroline died has not been found.

Family lore: "When my mother was young she was told of an Aunt Caroline whose husband was captured during the Civil War. He somehow got word back to her that she should exchange her Confederate money, amounting to $40,000, to U.S. money. She did not heed the advice and lost a fortune. No one in the family has been able to figure out who Aunt Caroline was, but my mother probably heard the story from a relative on her mother's side (Watts, Davis, Daniel, Collins families). Your database includes a Caroline married to Arthur Reese Daniell, who would have been an aunt to Mary Daniel Watts. I can't say a match is very likely, but this by far the closest I have come to finding one.
I asked my mother whether she remembered any more about the Aunt Caroline story, and she said the money that was lost was $32,000. I am puzzled at the family lore containing that specific number, but Mom remembered that. ("Fortune in those days" is the level of details I would have expected, especially since no-one remembers who Aunt Caroline was.)
She also said that her father was the one who told her the story, although her sister Doris and her cousin Nedra have no memory of the story. Nedra's unfamiliarity with the story indicates to me that this relative was not on the Reynolds side of the family (my mother's father), because Nedra has almost all the information on the Reynolds family. So why then was my grandfather, Julian Reynolds, the one who remembered the story? Beats me. So all I can offer on that mystery is a revision of the lost fortune." (Robert Frigo)

General Notes: Child - Anne E. PORTER

Anne E. PORTER was a daughter of James PORTER and Martha TURNER. Named in the 1850 census, she was born about 1832.

1850 U.S. Census, Georgia, Baldwin County, Exclusive of Milledgeville; Series: M432 Roll: 61 Page: 114: 389 389 James PORTER 44 M Carpenter GA; Martha " 48 F GA; Anne E. " 18 F GA; Julia F. " 15 F GA; George W. " 8 M GA.

Anne E. PORTER married Joshua Madison Jasper CALLAWAY on 8 May 1856.

In the 1900 census, Aunt "Carrie" DANNIEL [sic] lives in the household of Anne E. PORTER's daughter, Claud A. CALLAWAY. Carie is Caroline R. PORTER, widow of Arthur Reese DANIELL. In a confluence of families, Joshua Madison Jasper's brother, John Francis Marion CALLAWAY married Louisa Constanza DANIELL, sister of Arthur Reese and widow of Henry W. POSEY. It appears Anne E. and Caroline R. PORTER are are both daughters of James PORTER and Martha TURNER. Carrie was born October 1830 per in the 1900 census.

General Notes: Wife - Lucy POSEY

Lucy POSEY was the only child of Fernando and Sarah M. POSEY of Milledgeville, Baldwin County, Georgia. She married Joel Perrin WALKER, lawyer, on February 18, 1891 in Milledgeville, Baldwin, Georgia.

Joel and Lucy had three children by July 1896. The first two, sons Joshua and Carey, died as infants. Joel is not named with his family, Lucy and their 3 year old daughter Sarah Louise, in the 1900 census of Baldwin County, Georgia. That year, Lucy and Sarah were living in the home of Lucy's widowed mother, Sarah POSEY. Were Lucy and Joel separated or divorced before 1900?

Joel's family was from Laurens County, Georgia, his parents died there in the late 1890s. He is referred to as "Uncle Joe" in the above Rootsweb postings. In 1900, Joseph P. WALKER, 36, born (June or July?) 1864, widower and a lawyer, is living by himself in Howard, Laurens County, Georgia . This appears to be Joel Perrin WALKER, (ex-?)husband of Lucy POSEY. (Series: T623 Roll: 208 Page: 179)

Joel Perrin WALKER died in October of 1904 of heart failure.

Hull of interest and quite a surprise was the marriage of Mrs. Lucy P. WALKER and Dr. J. C. RICHARD here Thursday morning at 7:15 o'clock, the ceremony taking place at the home of the bride's mother on Liberty street. Mrs. RICHARD is well known here as one of the most popular ladies of the city and Dr. RICHARD is equally well known, being aa dentist at the Sanitorium. General Notes: Wife - Mattie Belle POSEY

Mattie Belle POSEY was a daughter of Henry A. POSEY and Mary A. OSBOURNE. The 1900 census lists Mattie as born on October 1880 and her sister Rosa as born May 1880. Mattie is age 26 in the 1910 census and age 36 in the 1920 census, a consistent indication that she was born 1883. Her Find A Grave Memorial lists her birth on 11 November 1881.

About 1901, Mattie married ______ PROSSER. He apparently died before 1910, when Mattie PROSSER, 26, widowed, and her daughter, Mamie, 8, live in her parents' household in Montgomery County, Georgia.
