Questions:
Was "Cary Hurst" a sixth child of James Orville Patterson and Eugenia Cary Hurst?
A small headstone inscribed only "CARY HURST" is in the Patterson plot, Riverside Cemetery, Fort Benton, Chouteau County, Montana. Patterson family records do not mention a sixth child for James and Eugenia." The possibility exists because grave markers there for Sherley [sic, Shirley] Hurst, Katherine Daniel, and Jane Cabaniss, daughters of James and Eugenia Cary Patterson, are inscribed with only their given names, and Eugenia Cary Hurst Patterson, wife of James Orville, has a separate full headstone:
CARY HURST
MAR. 5, 1869
FEB. 11, 1910
WIFE OF J. O.
PATTERSON
[Note: Eugenia was called "Cary. RLD]
OR:
Is the "Cary Hurst" stone the original marker for Eugenia Cary Hurst, 1869-1910? Was a later headstone, as above, placed on the same grave? If so, the marker and headstone should be in close proximity. If not and the marker is with the other children, the possibility of a sixth child might remain.

The memorial presents this obituary:
Posted: Friday, May 19, 2000
Richard Williams, Globe-News Staff Writer
Virgil P. Patterson made his mark in Amarillo and the Texas Panhandle as a banker, community leader and a major force in the development of Cal Farley's Boys Ranch. At his death at 82, Patterson had been president of Boys Ranch since 1967, assuming leadership a month after ranch founder Cal Farley died. During his 19 years at Boys Ranch, Patterson oversaw the addition of eight dormitories, a new chapel, a religious education building, a medical clinic, a junior high school auditorium and about 7,000 acres of land. Patterson was born Sept. 2, 1903, in Taylor. He graduated valedictorian of the Taylor High School class of 1920. Patterson was offered a bank bookkeeping position by his best friend's father who was president of the bank in Taylor. He enrolled at Southern Methodist University and for the next eight years alternately worked and went to college. He also attended the University of California at Los Angeles, finding jobs as a chauffeur, a construction worker and a clerk in a paint company. When he graduated from SMU in 1928, Patterson took a job with the Federal Reserve Bank in Los Angeles. On Oct. 29, 1929, he accepted a job as assistant national bank examiner. "I remember it was Black Thursday. I was waiting to interview with the chief (his future boss) upstairs in a hotel room when a bellboy handed me a paper with big, black headlines: "STOCK MARKET CRASHES.' Course, I didn't have any stock, so I really didn't care at the time..." he said in 1983. He achieved full national bank examiner status in 1933 and that same year married Florry Roberts of Sulphur Springs. The couple had two children, Tom and Emily Ann. In 1936, Patterson became vice president of American National Bank of Austin. Seven years later, he teamed with David Reed to raise enough money to buy a bank in Amarillo. In 1943, Patterson walked through the door of First National Bank of Amarillo with total deposits of $18 million. That first night he was made president of the bank. When he retired in 1968, FNB of Amarillo had grown to more than $150 million in deposits. After his retirement, Patterson remained FNB chairman until 1975 when he became an advisory director. He responsible for chairing a group that raised $6 million to build High Plains Baptist Hospital. Patterson volunteered with the Better Business Bureau, the YMCA, YWCO, the Panhandle-Plains Historical Society, the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, Big Brothers of Amarillo, Texas United Fund, Amarillo Area Foundation and the Amarillo Globe-News Empty Stocking Fund. He served as president of the Texas Bankers Association and the Texas Good Roads Association. In 1964, he was named Amarillo Globe-News Man of the Year. Patterson died in Amarillo on May 4, 1986.

"The daughter of a planter, Elizabeth Wylie grew up in well to do circumstances. She and her first husband had seven children, the last of whom was born the year his father died. Both of her parents were dead, and she also lost one of her brothers that year. It must have been a terrible time in her life. [See Wylie Excursus]
It would be interesting to know how Elizabeth Wylie White and William B. Daniel came to be married, especially since he was 16 years her junior. He was only five years older than her oldest son. Was it a marriage of convenience? Speculation aside, they had three children of their own and their marriage lasted for 45 years." (Jerri Hall)

The Peareson family have had representatives in every war in which the United States has been engaged from the Revolution of 1776 to that with Spain in 1898. In the civil war P. E. Peareson was a lieutenant in Company D, 6th Texas, the company being commanded by his father, Captain E. A. Peareson, of Grandbury's Brigade. The grandfather died in Matagorda County in the fall of 1865, and the father of Major Peareson died in Fort Bend County in July 1595 [sic]. Major Peareson spent the whole of his life in Fort Bend County, except when away at college. Before the war broke out with Spain he was captain of a company of State troops which was disbanded before hostilities commenced, but at the opening of the war received an unsolicited commission as Major from Governor Culberson, and, assigned to duty under Colonel Luther Hare, 1st Texas Cavalry, serving in that capacity until the close of the war. Was elected Sheriff of Fort Bend County in the fall of 1902, and now serving his first term married Miss Josie Stansbury of Fort Bend County April 1889. They had two children, D. Rugely and Helen Mare Peareson. The first named is the only one now living. General Notes: Wife - Alice PEARSON

Alice Pearson, daughter of J. W. Pearson and Mary A. Brown, born 15 March 1862, is known only from her death certificate. Other records of her have not been found. Between 1923 and 1929, Alice married Creed Caldwell York, of Meriwether and Upson counties, Georgia, whose first wife, Eliza A. Fuller, died 27 October 1923.

Where was Alice was before marrying Creed Caldwell York? When Alice was about 3 years old, her mother married second John Washington Sea/See/Seay in 1865. Her father perished in The War Between the States. It is possible she then grew up using her step-father's surname. In the 1870 census, all the children in John and Mary Ann's household are named as See. Is Martha See, b. abt 1861, Alice Pearson?

Mrs. Alice York was born 15 March 1862 in Georgia and died 9 Jan 1929 in Thomaston, Upson County, Georgia at age 66 years, 9 months, and 10 days. She was the daughter of J. W. From a short biobraphy of Samuel Farrow RICE on page 470 of Alabama, her history, resources, war record, and public men : from 1540 to 1872 by Willis Brewer: "...Samuel Farrow RICE, now a resident of this county [Montgomery County, Alabama]. He is the son of Judge Wm. RICE, who was a State senator in South Carolina. His mother was a sister of Z. P. [Zachariah Pines] HERNDON, a noted South Carolina lawyer, another of whose sisters married Hon. Samuel FARROW of that State." It also provides Samuel's schooling and a brief history of his associations as a lawyer in Alabama. Among his partnerships was one with Philip E. PEARSON in Talladega, Alabama. "Judge RICE married a daughter [Amanda] of Major P. E. PEARSON, at one time of Talladega."

"From The Montgomery Advertiser, 4 January 1890: The news of the death of Judge Samuel F. RICE will be received with sorrow all over Alabama. He has been identified with the State ever since his early manhood, and with this city nearly 40 years. Judge Samuel F. Rice died at his residence on Madison Avenue at 8 o'clock last night, in the 74th year of his age. His death was caused by heart disease, and after the attack he gradually grew worse until his big heart forever ceased its beating. Last spring Judge RICE had a severe stroke of paralysis. He leaves a wife and three children. The children are a widowed daughter, Mrs. Daisy GLAZE, a young son, Samuel, 11 years of age, and a little daughter, Marguerite Wiley, aged 3 years. No man in Alabama was better known through out the limits of the State than Samuel Farrow RICE . He was a son of Judge William RICE , who was a State Senator in South Carolina. His mother was a sister of Z. P. HERNDON, a noted South Carolina lawyer, another of whose sisters married Samuel FARROW, of that State. The subject of this sketch was born in Union District, South Carolina, June 2, 1816, and was graduated at the South Carolina College. He opened an office in Winnsboro, but in 1838 came to this State and settled in Talladega. He at once purchased a newspaper and edited it six years. In 1840 and again in 1841, he represented Talladega County in the Legislature In 1852 he settled in Montgomery as the associate of Colonel James E. BELSER. In December 1854, he was elected to the Supreme Court bench. He resigned that position in 1859, and represented Montgomery County in the Legislature that year. From 1861 to 1865 he represented Montgomery and Autauga Counties in the State Senate." General Notes: Wife - Katherine SAUNDERS

Said to be "of Virginia." The 1880 census lists Katherine's birth in South Carolina; however, the 1900 lists Virginia as place of birth for her and her parents.

Katherine was widowed in 1898, when her husband, George Butler PEARSON, Jr. died.

In 1900, "Katie" has three of her grandchildren living with her. Her daughter Mary Alston married Joseph G. MARTIN. They also live in Fairfield County in the same township as Katie. Curiously, Mary and Joseph have been married seven years and the census says she had no children, or probably meaning none living with her. The grandchildren are with their parents in 1910 and 1920.
