General Notes: Husband - Edward C. SOUTHWOOD

Edward C. SOUTHWOOD is NOT PROVEN to be the husband of Hannah HURST.

Hannah HURST, daughter of James H. HURST and Mary GUNNELL is said by some to have married Edward SOUTHWOOD. There is some question as to whether this Edward C. SOUTHWOOD is that Edward, born about 1792 in Virginia? There is a possible conflict of names between the 1850 censuses of Berkeley County, Virginia and neighboring Jefferson County. The Berkeley County census lists Edward C. SOUTHWOOD's wife as "Rohanna" age 58, married before 1823 based on the age of apparent daughter Sarah, 27.
1850 U.S. Census, Virginia, Berkeley County, District 9; Series: M432 Roll: 936 Page: 376: ??? 928 Edward C. SOUTHWOOD 58 M Farmer $4,500 VA; Rohanna " 58 F VA; Sarah " 27 F VA; Edward " 24 M VA; Margaret " 22 F VA; Priscilla " 17 F VA.
Curiously, a Hannah HURST, 59, is listed in the 1850 census in Jefferson County, Virginia:
1850 U.S. Census, Virginia, Jefferson County, 28th Dist; Series: M432 Roll: 953 Page: 373: 1188 1203 William G. FERGUSON 45 M Farmer VA; Hannah HURST 59 F 29,625 VA. [This Hannah may be the daughter of James H. HURST and Mary GUNNELL., age is correct, and her HURST family is well established in Jefferson County. NOTE: Jefferson County created from Berkeley County in 1801. RLD]

Then in 1860, separated from wife, Ruhanna [sic] SOUTHWOOD, 68, living in Charleton, Jefferson County, Virginia in 1860?

General Notes: Husband - James Erwin MOSS

The census of 1840 lists James E. MOSS-two males 20-30, 3 females under 5, 1 female 15-20 and 1 female 20-30. Censuses taken before 1850 do not list each individual, but one of the men 20-30 would be James (29 years old); the three girls under 5 would be Caroline Elizabeth (4), Emma Lucia (2) and Anne Catherine (under a year old); and the woman 20-30 would be Selena Catherine (24). The other man 20-30 and the girl 15-20 are unknown to this writer, but they could be relatives. They will ultimately have ten children, three of whom die when they are very young. The census of 1850 lists James (39 years old), Selena (34), Caroline E. (14), Emily L. (12 - Emma Lucia), Ann C. (10), Rebecca L. (9 - who married George Bull SALLEY, and were this writer's great grandparents), James M. (4), Sarah A. (2 months old). Not listed are Mary Selena, who will pass away in 1852 and Benjamin David, who was not born until 1853. This family appears again in 1880, but that year, all the children are gone, and there are only James (69), Selena (64) and their widowed daughter Carrie E. Moss RILEY (44 - Caroline E.). James MOSS died in 1887, and Selena, his wife, in 1899, so they do not appear on any other census-the one for 1890 was destroyed by fire. I had a great aunt, Carrie Riley SALLEY, a maiden lady, who I think was named after her aunt, Caroline Elizabeth Moss RILEY. She lived with her sister, Adriana Rebecca Salley GREEN. They were known to the family as Aunt Carrie and Aunt Addie." (George Salley, factoid@ix.netcom.com, 11/18/2005)

Samuel Moss is not named in his father's 1808 Will and is presumed died before then. Samuel's father John Moss wrote in his Will: "Item I give and bequeath unto my grandson Gideon Moss and my grand Daughter Elizabeth K. Moss two hundred Dollars each to be paid them or their heirs in eighteen months after my Decease which with what I gave their father in his lifetime I consider and hereby declare to be their full part of my Estate." From this it is deduced that Gideon and Elizabeth K. Moss are Samuel's children.
